Teen pop singer Jessica Simpson will enter the studio July 17 to begin work on the follow-up to her 1999 debut, Sweet Kisses, a spokesperson for the singer said. … Hole have posted more than 50 MP3 files on holemusic.com. The songs include live versions of such songs as “Celebrity Skin” and “Malibu,” as well as a studio version of “Asking for It” with guest vocals from Kurt Cobain. …

Shawn Mullins will release a new album, Beneath the Velvet Sun, on Oct. 3. The studio follow-up to 1998′s Soul’s Core, it features a duet with Elton John on a new version of John’s “Border Song.” Other guests include Shelby Lynne and Shawn Colvin. Mullins, who scored a #1 hit with Soul’s Core‘s “Lullaby,” co-produced the album with Julian Raymond (Fastball). …

Rock band Matchbox Twenty will release “Bent” as a CD single, their first, on July 4. The track, off Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty, has been the #1 song on the Radio & Records Adult Alternative chart for six weeks. The single will include a live acoustic recording of the band’s previous hit “Push.” … Bon Jovi will play a benefit concert Thursday (June 29) in Asbury Park, N.J., with all proceeds going to three local charities, according to Island Records. Two weeks ago the band released Crush, its first studio album in five years. …

Rhino Records will reissue former Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson‘s eponymous 1998 album on Sept. 5. A set of four original Kiss costumes on life-sized mannequins went for $86,250. The auction was held at Paramount Studios and online. … Veteran guitar wizard Carlos Santana is in the studio with folkie/rapper Everlast recording a track for Everlast’s upcoming album, expected in the fall, a Santana spokesperson said.
