'Notorious K.I.M.' Tops New Rap Albums

Quasimoto, Def Squad, Nelly also release new LPs.

Lil' Kim's much-delayed Notorious K.I.M. will finally hit stores Tuesday (June 27), topping the list of this week's new rap albums.

Def Squad's Erick Sermon, the San Francisco Bay Area's Quasimoto and St. Louis newcomer Nelly will all release albums as well.

Packed with an ensemble of producers and numerous guest appearances, Lil' Kim's album arrives after several delays. The former Junior M.A.F.I.A. member named the album for her one-time boyfriend, slain rapper Biggie Smalls, who also is credited as the album's executive producer.

Lil' Kim teams with singer Mary J. Blige on the rap ballad "Hold On," a song dedicated to Smalls. Also making guest appearances are Goodie MOb's Cee-Lo, "Thong Song" singer Sisqó, R&B crooner Carl Thomas, Lil' Cease and Grace Jones.

Puff Daddy, a co-producer of the 18-track album, makes an appearance on "Queen B@#$h part 2," a sequel to a song on Lil' Kim's 1996 debut album, Hard Core. Also contributing production work on the album are Yellowman, Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie and Nasheim Myrick.

California's Madlib releases his first full-length album, under the name Quasimoto. The Unseen blends Madlib's natural voice with the nasal, tweaked raps of his alter ego on songs such as "Jazz Cats Pt. 1" and "Return of the Loop Digga" (RealAudio excerpt.

The songs are jazzy collages, shifting between loops, tied together by gritty beats in the involved production work of Madlib.

Former EPMD rapper Erick Sermon is at the center of Def Squad Presents Erick Onasis, also due Tuesday. The album includes two songs with Sermon's Def Squad partner Keith Murray, who is serving a three-year prison term for assault. "So Sweet" (RealAudio excerpt) features vocals recorded by N.W.A rapper Eazy-E before his death in 1995.

Redman, DJ Quik and Xzibit also contribute to the album, and rapper Slick Rick is featured on the single "Why Not" (RealAudio excerpt).

Chicago's Cap.One releases his solo debut, Through the Eyes of a Don, with guest rhyming from Canibus on "Ladies & Willies" (RealAudio excerpt). Dru Hill's Nokio mixes vocals with Cap.One's battle raps on the first single, "They Luv Dat."

St. Louis rapper Nelly hopes to help put his hometown on the map with his first album, Country Grammar. "If we can bring any more cameras or any more helicopters or anybody who just wanna fly over and take a peep at what we doing, that's good," the rapper said in May.

The album's first single, "(Hot S**t) Country Grammar" has spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart, peaking at #5.

Also releasing albums Tuesday are Kelly Price, with Mirror, Mirror, and DarkRoom Familia, with Homicide Kings.
