As the American Mavericks series continues, Contributing Editor Joe McLellan stops to reflect upon what makes a maverick. But more important, he considers what makes yesterday's maverick tomorrow's musical icon. He points to George Gershwin, John Cage and Ruth Crawford Seeger (to name a few) and discusses how changes in musical styles and technology, and even physical impairments, can come to define a maverick.
