If any music genre makes itself difficult to break into subcategories, it's jazz. However, from 1954 to 1965 hard bop came to the forefront as the East Coast's response to the cool jazz of the West Coast. Hard bop consisted of but was not limited to performers Clifford Brown, Art Blakely and Wes Montgomery. The artists on this list are by no means the definition of hard bop, but each brought something special to it.
