Romantic Compilation Seductive At Mere $1.98

CD features Claudia Acuna, John Pizzarelli, Acoustic Alchemy and others.

The compilation CD BET on Jazz Presents: For the Love of Jazz debuts at #2 on Billboard's Top Jazz albums chart this week, undoubtedly because it costs a mere $1.98. That's not much more than the raw cost of pressing a CD.

The romance-themed disc includes tunes from singer Claudia Acuna, guitarist John Pizzarelli, Acoustic Alchemy and others.

Black Entertainment Television and National Association of Recording Merchandisers priced the CD low "to entice people to purchase it and give them a chance to listen to music they wouldn't normally listen to," according to BET On Jazz Vice President Waymer Johnson. This is the second year that BET and NARM have released a promotional compilation in June, which NARM calls Jazz Month.

Also debuting high on the charts is eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter's self-titled June release, which is at #6. The CD features the song "Nothin' but Trouble" (RealAudio excerpt).

Meanwhile, singer/pianist Diana Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes continues to reign supreme. Pianist David Benoit's Here's to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years! moves down one notch to #3, followed by producer/singer Steve Tyrell's A New Standard at #4 and Medeski Martin & Wood's Tonic at #5.

Saxophonist Joshua Redman's Beyond takes the seventh position this week with trumpeter Roy Hargrove's Moment to Moment — Roy Hargrove With Strings at #8, the Miles Davis compilation Love Songs at #9 and Krall's reissued Stepping Out at #10.

Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz albums chart hardly changes this week. Saxophonist Boney James and trumpeter Rick Braun's Shake It Up and guitarist George Benson's Absolute Benson hold on to the top two spots. Saxophonist Dave Koz's The Dance moves up one slot to #3, trailed by singer Al Jarreau's Tomorrow Today (#4), Kenny G's Classics in the Key of G (#5), Acoustic Alchemy's The Beautiful Game (#6) and Urban Knights' Urban Knights III (#7).

Singer/pianist Keiko Matsui moves up two to #8, while James' Body Language (#9) and singer Maysa's All My Life (#10) finish the top 10.
