Diplo Previews Thom Yorke's Major Lazer Remix For New EP

Producer explains how the Radiohead frontman wound up on Lazers Never Die.

At the South by Southwest music festival in March, MTV News sat down with producer Diplo to talk about his work on M.I.A.'s upcoming /\/\/\Y/\ album (this was before he called it "a turd"), and, at the end of the chat — almost in passing — he mentioned an upcoming EP by his Major Lazer project that featured a remix by none other than Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

It sounded pretty rad, but there was one problem: According to a label rep who was standing off-camera, the EP would probably never see the light of day, due to — as she put it — "clearance issues." This was news to practically everyone, Diplo included.

"There's an EP that comes out next month, I think — is it coming out?" he said, stopping to ask the rep. "Oh, it's not cleared? Oh, well, we have like five records, there's a record with Collie Buddz, Thom Yorke did a remix for us. ... I mixed it down; it's pretty crazy. ... It'll get out, somehow."

Turns out, he wasn't kidding. After months of waiting, the Major Lazer EP, called Lazers Never Die, will hit stores on July 20. So, we decided now was a pretty good time to revisit our chat with Dip, in which he told the story behind the collaboration with Yorke.

"He came to our party in London in August, the Carnival party — the Notting Hill Carnival — it's one of the biggest Caribbean parties in the world, 1.5 million people there, dancing to disco, dub music, everything, and Thom Yorke was at our party. He got in, was moshing basically the whole party, like going crazy for Major Lazer," Diplo laughed. "I met him and we traded some information, and he asked to do a remix for Major Lazer. ... And of all the tracks he could've remixed, he picked 'Jump Up,' which is this jumping, crazy, hype record. And I was like, 'All right, you sure?' And he's like, 'Yeah, we can do that one.'

"And he did it, I mixed it down a little bit and put it on our EP," he continued. "It's pretty good. It sounds like what you would expect. It sounds like a Thom Yorke remix. It sounds something like 'Idioteque' off the Kid A record. I'm a huge Radiohead fan. ... What they do kind of influences our music so heavily. I feel like sometimes, Radiohead maybe has a mistake in the studio, and they build with it. They clean it up and make something out of it. And that's what we kind of do. I feel like most of the stuff I do is an accident."

And that includes spilling the beans on the Die EP, though, even back in March, Dip seemed confident that eventually, fans would be able to hear it. Even if he had to take matters into his own hands.

"People will find it," he laughed, winking at the publicist. "If it doesn't come out soon, you'll find it."

Faith No More, Gorillaz, Pavement and other age-defying acts heat up the desert fest.

INDIO, California — Leave it to the least likely star to grace the Coachella headlining stage to best sum up 2010's festival.

"I wanna be forever young," Beyoncé sang as fireworks erupted Friday, helping husband Jay-Z close his much-anticipated set.

Not only was there a cavalcade of age-defying acts among the three day festival's 100-some performers, it was often the over-40 club delivering the most commanding sets, Jigga Man included.

Before Jay powered through more than 30 songs on Friday, super group Them Crooked Vultures (featuring Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme) and Street Sweeper Social Club (starring Rage Against the Machine/ Audioslave guitar hero Tom Morello) both won over large crowds — not with familiar songs, but with sheer performance flair. Ditto Thom Yorke, Faith No More, Devo, the Specials, a reunited Pavement and many more throughout the weekend.

Even Coachella itself has improved with age. Now in its 11th year, the festival set attendance records, selling out 75,000 three-day passes. (Single-day tickets were not available for the first time ever.)

Because flights were grounded overseas due to the ash cloud created by the volcanic eruption in Iceland, seven bands missed Coachella, including the Cribs and Frightened Rabbit, as well as Phoenix's light tech. "So, we're just gonna go simple and make it about the music," Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars said, before deftly staying true to that promise.

Also absent was Dr. Dre, who was widely rumored to guest during Jay-Z's set. Actually, with the exception of Beyoncé and his own 10-piece band, Hova had no guests, a bit surprising considering the tall order at hand as the festival's first hip-hop headliner. Instead, Jay relied on his own swagger and arsenal of hits, beginning with "Run This Town" and ending with, of course, "Encore."

As California first lady Maria Shriver enjoyed the set next to Beyoncé and Hayden Panettiere, video screens showed President Obama doing the "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" gesture.

After cheering from the sidelines (and enjoying a cold beer), Beyoncé took the stage with a giant smile and a punk-rock T-shirt with the Never Mind the Bullocks logo (perhaps a nod to Sex Pistol Johnny Lydon, whose Public Image Limited was playing at the next stage over).

Jay, who entered by rising from a platform below the stage, hardly played a song in its entirety and could have done more for this crowd with his rock-leaning songs like "99 Problems." At Glastonbury in 2008, after Noel Gallagher said there was no place for hip-hop at the festival, Jay opened with Oasis's "Wonderwall." His DJ played that song at Coachella too, but it felt out of place in the middle of his set and without context.

As has been his habit at concerts lately, Jay gave several shout-outs to specific crowd members. "To the guy who looks like The Situation," he said to much laughter. It was a genuine, raw moment the set needed.

It was Saturday's headliner, Muse, who clearly delivered the best performance, giving a master class in energizing an audience, beginning with a rollicking "Uprising." And just to ensure that every single person sang along to the epic tune, the words flashed behind them as singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy hit each one. Heck, the band's light and pyro show was worthy of its own Coachella slot.

Bellamy borrowed from the best throughout the 90-minute set, windmilling around the stage like Pete Townsend and picking through the national anthem like Jimi Hendrix. (The Brit also wore an American flag shirt to go along.) He even paid tribute to big band, a genre memorialized across Palm Springs, by crooning Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" from a clear grand piano.

Coachella's best cover actually came from Faith No More, whose Mike Patton took the stage in a red leisure suit and cane, and sang a deadpan rendition of Peaches and Herb's "Reunited" with the fitting chorus, "Reunited and it feels so good." Somehow the song blended right in among classics like "We Care a Lot" and "Epic." It was difficult to hear their hard-fueled rock and not think of all the bands they influenced, from System of a Down to Incubus, whose Brandon Boyd was spotted backstage.

Gorillaz headlined Sunday and got off to a good start with a video of an animated Snoop Dogg introducing the band, who appeared in the flesh. Damon Albarn was in prime vocal form, but the show lacked the visual excitement expected of the group. The animated members rarely appeared, let alone as holograms or anything else. Bonus points, however, for bringing on some real guests, including De La Soul, members of the Clash and Bobby Womack, who sings on the new single "Stylo."

Headlining Sunday's second stage was Thom Yorke, who showcased his own super group, Atoms for Peace, which includes Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. The virtuosos made Yorke's solo record The Eraser their playground, inflicting jittery beats and funky bass grooves all over the singer's wide-ranging vocals.

At first the blue-haired Flea looked almost bored, but he quickly got into the show, dancing with Yorke, or whatever you call the shaking they did many times through the 90-minute set. For an encore, Yorke returned solo and played a new song on which he layered his own vocals with looping pedals. Then he treated his fanboy audience (which included Jay-Z and Russell Simmons) to a couple of Radiohead tunes, including "Everything in Its Right Place."

Also playing late, although not intentionally, was Sly Stone, who in perfect Sly fashion, missed his 7 p.m. slot, showed up 40 minutes late to his rescheduled 10:30 slot, and then performed what could only be described as a train wreck. He ranted for 10 minutes about his old manager, stopped songs midway through, forgetting lyrics, and abruptly jumped off the stage and left. Axl Rose has got nothing on this guy.

On the opposite end of the spectrum were Matt & Kim, the band happiest to be playing Coachella, or at least the one who showed it the most. The duo recounted their favorite memories from the weekend ("Beyoncé gave me goose bumps," Matt said), shared manscaping tips and had their very own streaker ("Hooray for that man's penis!" Matt cheered). And the music was just as entertaining, like when the drum (Kim) and keys (Matt) duo broke into "Apache" during the middle of their awesome single "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare." They also pounded ferociously through Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll Part 2."

Other Sunday stand-outs included French sensation Phoenix, who gathered one of the largest crowds of the weekend and whipped them into a frenzy from the opening "Listomania" to the closing "1901" and everything in between. Spoon had the most sing-alongs, but it was Yo La Tengo and Pavement who educated the main stage audience on alternative rock's roots, while Sunny Day Real Estate, featuring Foo Fighters Nate Mendel on bass, reminded the second stage of emo's origins.

Julian Casablancas ignored the desert heat and donned a black leather jacket for a set that included both solo and Strokes material, while Miike Snow took the stage in matching black suits and white masks, looking like a scene out of a Stanley Kubrick movie, and kinda sounding like one too.

On Saturday, maybe it was that Muse and Faith No More were so good, but the highly anticipated MGMT and Dead Weather sets seemed to fall flat. Both acts waited until mid-show to play their best-known material, which can be risky when there are four other stages going at the same time.

Coheed & Cambria are not exactly hit-makers, but the MTV March Madness champions are performers and proved the perfect warm-up for FNM and Muse. For their closing, the Rush-inspired rockers brought out members of the USC marching band, adding to an already full sound.

Band of Skulls turned in a break-out set, putting a more radio-friendly spin on blues rock. Think Wolfmother or the Black Keys meets Blink-182. Other Saturday afternoon highlights included perennial partiers the Gossip (who were also remixed later in the 2 Many DJs set) and A

Radiohead's Thom Yorke Reveals Side Project Name, Tour Dates

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has finally unveiled the name of his new side project: Atoms for Peace. The band's all-star lineup consists of bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drummer Joey Waronker of R.E.M., Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.

"It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms for Peace," Yorke wrote on the official Radiohead Web site. "Hope you like the name. It seemed bleedin' obvious."

Atoms for Peace will embark on a brief tour in April, beginning with two nights at New York's Roseland Ballroom on April 5 and 6 and concluding with a performance at the Coachella Festival in Indio, California, on April 18. Tickets for Coachella are currently available for purchase, while tickets for the other dates go on sale next week.

In October Yorke assembled the members of Atoms for Peace for a two-night concert event at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, with the intention of performing tracks from his debut solo album, The Eraser, released in 2006.

"Yorke is aggressively reaching for the bottom in his own sound," The Los Angeles Times wrote of that concert. "It wouldn't be fair to call this music Radiohead Lite, because it wasn't light at all. But it was more concentrated and, in some ways, more graspable than that group's work. By appealing to the lower body, Yorke and his band dictated the audience's focus in ways that Radiohead's performances don't."

"We had too much fun to just leave it there," Yorke said of the upcoming tour.

Thom Yorke Brings ???? To Coachella, Rekindles Poorly Punctuated Magic

Radiohead frontman once again lets grammar fall to the wayside, in Bigger Than the Sound.

Take a look at the lineup for the 2010 Coachella Festival, which was revealed Tuesday to much fanfare and some actual praise from the usually venomous Greek chorus that is the blogosphere. And while that in and of itself is probably worth a column (that or the more lunkheaded "Jay-Z WTF?!" angle), the more pressing issue is one of punctuation. And why Thom Yorke is magical.

Check out the official Coachella poster, which is up on the fest's official site and gets all big-like when you click on it. See there on Sunday, where Thom is listed with a bunch of question marks next to his name? That's not a typo, according to the folks who do publicity for the fest. It's specifically how Yorke wanted to be billed — with four question marks following his name. That was not negotiable.

Now, apparently, this is how he was also billed when he played a spate of solo shows last year, either because he never got around to deciding on a name for his backing band (which included Flea and producer Nigel Godrich), or because he simply did not want to. According to his publicist, that's also the case with Coachella — Yorke will once again play with a band and, once again, they will not have a name. Or, more specifically, they will be called "????"

And this is why Thom Yorke is magical. He has never let something like punctuation stand in his way. Most times, he never even acknowledges its existence, but when he does, it's usually only to wantonly abuse it. There is no AP Stylebook that can hold him. He is the most lethal thing to happen to copy editors since the release of the Breeders' Title TK album. It's almost as if he's saying, "Stodgy commas? Where we're going, we don't need stodgy commas."

Ever since I was a kid in a smoke-filled, tapestry-laden college dorm room, I've thrilled to his poorly-punctuated misadventures. He filled the old Radiohead Web site (the creepy white one) with stuff like "not sleeping okay/drinking too much.trapped in hyperspace.?.the girl disappeared, smiling and blowing kisses" and "we go to a restaurant there is meat in the bread there is not enough seats for everyone there is meat in everything jellylikefat pink slices pink/climbing up fire escapes/very poisoned." I had no idea what it all meant back then (and I still don't today), but it seemed pretty deep. Thom was on some next-level stuff back then.

He famously cut up all the lyrics to the songs on Kid A, then rearranged them at random, in a nod to Tristan Tzara's Dadaist poetry. He named a song on Amnesiac "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors," for reasons clear only to him. He gave all the tunes on Hail to the Thief "alternate titles" ("It Girl. Rag Doll.") because he felt like it. There was no rational explanation for any of it but he did it anyway, and I loved it all. I still do today.

Because, unlike anything else (except maybe his hair sometimes), these hijinx gave Yorke the air of a very unstable man. I have never met him, and maybe he really is, but in general he seems to be a very nice, if not slightly serious, dude. He has two kids. He is a vegan. He is upset about things like global warming. None of that made him any different than my next-door neighbor (I live in Brooklyn). But when he really got going, alone in some hermetically sealed chamber somewhere, pounding out missives without giving pause to punctuation, he became a mad monk, a jazz musician, a lunatic.

And really, we want our rock stars to be unhinged. We want them to be obsessed with all things post-millennial, about the melding of man and machine, and we want them to write accordingly. We want them to fire away without commas, or with 15 exclamation points if the situation demands it. Missives and lyrics should mirror binary code. This is what we pay good money to see. Sadly, in recent years, Yorke has mellowed out some (though no one can explain why In Rainbows has a song called "Faust ARP" on it) and, to be honest, it has made him slightly less interesting to me. He became little more than the frontman of a really good band. Sort of like Craig Finn.

But now, thanks to four question marks, I'm interested once again. This is probably pretty shallow (and stupid), but I've never been one to shy away from declaratory statements when Radiohead are involved. The mad man has returned, and this time, he's brought his pals "????" along with him. I have no idea who "????" will actually be (though it would be rad if it were Question Mark & the Mysterians), but I am compelled to find out — even if it means plunking down the $269 (plus service fees) for a three-day Coachella pass. That's the magic of Thom Yorke. He makes the seemingly mundane incredibly interesting. He plays by his own rules. He makes punctuation his bitch. He is insane, and I love him for it.

I hope he never changes. I hope he names Radiohead's next album w, only he puts a tilde over it for no particular reason. I hope all the lyrics are just one long run-on sentence, with abrupt periods and em-dashes tossed in by a blindfolded Jonny Greenwood. I hope he has another child and calls him "A.nd/y." All of this is back in play now, all of it is possible, just because one man refused to bend to the rules of punctuation. Crazy Thom is back. The revolution begins again and it does so with four question marks. Why not????

'New Moon' Soundtrack Clips Hit The Web

British Amazon site posts 30-second clips of all songs of soundtrack from second 'Twilight' film.

It's not a leak, but the site British Amazon.com has given fans an unexpected preview of the hotly anticipated "New Moon" soundtrack (which hits stores on October 20) by posting a 30-second snippet of each song on the album.

Which means that, if you were wondering what Thom Yorke's "Hearing Damage" or the Killers' "A White Demon Love Song" sounds like, you're in luck! (BTW, the answers are "An outtake from The Eraser" and "Lou Reed," respectively.)

Based on these clips, Lykke Li's "Possibility" evokes a hazy fever dream, Muse's "New Moon" remix of "I Belong to You" (the original version of which appears on their just-released album The Resistance) is a stately minuet, Bon Iver and St. Vincent's "Rosyln" is hushed and churchly, and OK Go's "Shooting the Moon" — with its weird sound effects — reminds us a whole lot of a Flaming Lips track.

The Friday unveiling of snippets from the "New Moon" soundtrack is a fitting way to cap off what's already been a pretty huge week for members of Twilight Nation. On Wednesday, after months of hype, the video for the first single off the album — Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" — premiered on MTV, and fans of the series responded with gusto (though they would've preferred more shirtless Robert Pattinson, to be honest). And MTV News will have lots more about the soundtrack in a series of articles that begin publishing on Monday!

The Amazon preview only appears on the United Kingdom version of the site; at press time, the U.S. site did not contain any snippets of songs from the soundtrack.

'New Moon' Soundtrack Lineup Announced: Killers, Thom Yorke, More

Album from second 'Twilight' film also includes Death Cab for Cutie, Muse, Lykke Li and more.

On Monday morning (September 21), MTV News reported that "Twilight" fave band Muse would be contributing a remixed version of the song "I Belong to You," from their new album, The Resistance, for the upcoming "New Moon" soundtrack. Just hours later, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer released the album's full track list on her Web site.

The soundtrack will include 15 songs, most from artists new to this vampire universe. Paramore, who contributed two songs to the film's first soundtrack, will not appear this time around. Thom Yorke of Radiohead, who had a song in the "Twilight" movie but not on the soundtrack, will have one song on the new disc. And while star Robert Pattinson recorded a song for "Twilight," he does not have a song on the "New Moon" album. All the music is original and exclusive to the "New Moon" soundtrack, which was not the case with the first album.

While Grizzly Bear are the only band to appear on the soundtrack from a list of artists Meyer recently blogged that she's been listening to, the album certainly seems in line with her tastes.

Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" — premiered exclusively on MTV.com over VMA weekend — leads off the soundtrack, and is followed by Band of Skulls ("Friends"), Thom Yorke ("Hearing Damage"), Lykke Li ("Possibility"), the Killers ("A White Demon Love Song"), Anya Marina ("Satellite Heart"), Muse ("I Belong to You [New Moon]"), Bon Iver with St. Vincent ("Rosyln"), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ("Done All Wrong"), Hurricane Bells ("Monsters"), Sea Wolf ("The Violet Hour"), OK Go ("Shooting the Moon"), Grizzly Bear ("Slow Life"), Editors "No Sound but the Wind" and Alexandre Desplat ("New Moon [The Meadow]").

The soundtrack will be available on October 20 on Atlantic Records, exactly one month before "New Moon" opens in theaters on November 20.

More 'New Moon' Soundtrack Details Revealed

Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas is 'confident' Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and Band of Skulls tracks will be included.

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" is one of the most feverishly anticipated film releases of the fall (out November 20), and with it comes one of the most talked-about soundtracks since, well, last year's "Twilight" soundtrack. One song has already been unleashed, as Death Cab for Cutie unveiled their contribution "Meet Me on the Equinox" on MTV.com during Sunday's VMAs. The full track list will be announced Friday, but there are already more details emerging about the album, due out October 20.

Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas told The New York Times that she was "confident" the soundtrack would include already-rumored tracks from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, wintry indie folker Bon Iver and British alt-rockers Band of Skulls. Citing "group representatives," the Times also asked about rumors that the Killers and Grizzly Bear would have songs on the soundtrack, but Patsavas would not comment on either band.

She did talk about the album's thematic elements, though, explaining that it would be married to the film much closer than the "Twilight" soundtrack was. "This is a much more somber movie than 'Twilight,' " Patsavas said. "There is a lot of love lost, so the artists that are going to make up the soundtrack reflect that longing — a lot of acoustic instruments, a lot of a cappella singing."

When the "Twilight" soundtrack was released last year, it was brought to Hot Topic stores for premiere listening parties, but this time around, they hope to take the promotion up a notch: Atlantic Records, the label that distributes the soundtracks, plans to do a tour of Hot Topics with some of the contributing artists in tow.

In addition to premiering the Death Cab song, MTV News confirmed on Sunday that Muse were finalists for making the "New Moon" soundtrack. Following the inclusion of their "Supermassive Black Hole" in the "Twilight" album, this which would make them the only band to appear on both movies' soundtracks.

'New Moon' Director Confirms Thom Yorke, Bon Iver For Soundtrack

Chris Weitz also hopes to get Kings of Leon to contribute a song.

We already told you that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz said Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was interested in contributing a song to the movie, due in theaters November 20.

And while Yorke's people wouldn't confirm the potentially mind-blowing collabo, Weitz revealed on Thursday that he's got the track in hand and can't wait to listen. Speaking to the entertainment Web site HitFix.com amid the Comic-Con madness, Weitz said that he has not only secured a new song from the Radiohead mastermind, but also one from freak-folkie Bon Iver.

"I selfishly want to put songs in by artists I love. And some the cast and crew also happen to love," Weitz said. "I think [Bon Iver] is fantastic. He says he wrote it for the film, but who ever knows if it might just be something laying around in his cupboard." Weitz said he'll be listening to the Yorke track Friday (July 24) and said that "unless it's sounds of him belching, I think I'll put it in." Spokespeople for Yorke and Bon Iver could not be reached for comment at press time.

Weitz also said he's planning to include a track from the British trio Band of Skulls and once again mentioned that he'd like to get a Kings of Leon song for the soundtrack to the "Twilight" sequel. The "Twilight" soundtrack has sold more than 2.1 million copies to date.

Director Chris Weitz reveals soundtrack possibilities in a recent interview.

"New Moon" director Chris Weitz recently gave an interview to movie site RottenTomatoes.com in which he talked about the status of the film — it's due in theaters November 20 — and spoke at length about the music he's lining up for the soundtrack.

Now, normally, soundtrack stories aren't that interesting ... but two things were different here. First, the "New Moon" album follows the mega-successful "Twilight" soundtrack (which featured a pair of new songs from Paramore and has sold more than 2.1 million copies to date) and second, Weitz mentioned that none other than Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and the Kings of Leon were interested in contributing songs.

For real.

"I am surprised at some of the bands that have said they're interested. It's kind of great," Weitz told the site. "The criterion will still always be what's right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we're very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something ... it's exciting to be able to have access to this kind of talent."

Speculation about just who would appear on the "New Moon" soundtrack has run rampant for months, with names like Kelly Clarkson and Coldplay being tossed about, but Yorke and the Kings of Leon?! They just seemed, well, different ... and yes, we know that Radiohead's "15 Step" featured prominently in the "Twilight" film (though was noticeably absent from the soundtrack album), but still ...

So we decided to find out for ourselves if Weitz was being serious. First, we reached out to Atlantic Records, who — along with music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas's Chop Shop Records — released the "Twilight" soundtrack, and will be doing the same for "New Moon." A spokesperson for the label told MTV News that he could not confirm the story, since the track list for the "New Moon" soundtrack was still being worked out.

We then reached out to reps for Yorke and the Kings of Leon, hoping they could shed some light on the "New Moon" situation. Turns out, they couldn't really.

Yorke's spokesperson told MTV News "not denying [the story], but there's nothing confirmed as yet." When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the Kings of Leon told us "They like the film a lot, but it's a little too early to tell if they can be involved."

So, while we now know that the Kings of Leon like "New Moon," we're not any closer to figuring out if they — or Yorke — will appear on the soundtrack to the film. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Tony Yayo made his first court appearance Wednesday morning (April 25) in New York in connection with allegations that he roughed up Game manager Jimmy "Henchman" Rosemond's 14-year-old son on March 20. According to Yayo's lawyer, Scott Leemon, very little happened during the brief preliminary appearance, at which the case was adjourned until July 24. Leemon again expressed his belief that Yayo was not involved in the incident, telling MTV News, "After a thorough investigation, I steadfastly and adamantly state to you that Tony Yayo did not slap anyone," Leemon said. "I am hopeful that when [authorities] complete their investigation, they will come to the same conclusion. Yayo, as a father, understands the allegations and would never do anything to harm a child." ...

The "American Idol" charity special "Idol Gives Back" racked up a whopping 70 million phone votes for a variety of charitable organizations, according to the publicity firm that handles the TV show. Two lines per contestant were opened to make it easier for callers to get through — that usually doesn't happen until the finals — and Fox parent company News Corp. has said it will chip in 10 cents for each of the first 50 million votes cast. ...

Opening statements began Wednesday in the trial of Phil Spector, with prosecutor Alan Jackson telling jurors that the music producer, "when he's confronted with the right situations, turns sinister and deadly," The Associated Press reports. Spector reportedly appeared tense during the televised hearing, and his attorneys were set to present their own opening remarks later in the day. ... Two diaries Anna Nicole Smith wrote in the early 1990s were sold for $59,750 after failing to sell at a recent auction, AP reports. An unnamed record-company executive was the buyer. ...

Russell Simmons appeared on "Live With Regis & Kelly" on Wednesday and clarified his stance on questionable hip-hop lyrical content. Simmons explained that he isn't calling for a full-on ban of certain words, but said, "We need to find more digestible ways to get our message across when it's coming through public airwaves." Simmons said he believes the request, which he made along with the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, is a reasonable one and stressed that there should be more corporate responsibility for what lyrics are broadcast. ... KCAA-AM, the Southern California radio station that had been rebroadcasting "Don Imus in the Morning" to rebel against the radio host's firing over racist and sexist comments, will end the reruns Friday, AP reports. Attorneys for CBS Radio and KCAA said they had agreed to end a lawsuit aimed at halting the rebroadcasts. ...

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke posted yet another strangely phrased missive on the band's blog earlier this week, writing that Radiohead are getting back to work after taking last week off. He added that he has "a CD of what we've been up to ... and you haven't. Yet. Sorry." (It's. OK. Thom.) Yorke goes on to write that he "must listen to it, after taking an ear break ... that always makes me nervous." ... Eminem is going back to his roots. The rapper and his longtime manager are in negotiations to take over the famed St. Andrew's Hall complex in downtown Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press. The pair are trying to negotiate a plan to lease the venue from owner LiveNation, which would give them control of the liquor license and day-to-day operations of the venue that was the site of many of Em's earliest performances, some of them depicted in his semiautobiographical film, "8 Mile." The deal could be completed as early as next month. ...

In an unusual move, three of this summer's Ozzfest bands — Lamb of God, Hatebreed and Behemoth — will also play select dates on the Sounds of the Underground Tour. Suicidal Tendencies, Testament and Mushroomhead have also been announced as special guests for the trek, which was already set to feature Chimaira, Gwar, Every Time I Die, the Number Twelve Looks Like You, Goatwhore and others. Lamb of God will headline the recently added August 11 date in Louisville, Kentucky, with Hatebreed and Behemoth taking the stage earlier in the day. Testament will appear during the July 14 show in Sayreville, New Jersey, and Mushroomhead will close the July 21 Cleveland date, as well as take the stage July 22 (Columbus, Ohio); July 23 (Chicago); and July 24 (Minneapolis). Suicidal Tendencies will headline the August 3 (San Jose, California); August 4 (Irvine, California); and August 5 (Mesa, Arizona) dates. ...

The band that gave you "The Sun Never Sweats" and "Stinkin' Up the Great Outdoors" is reuniting once again, this time to rock you at the Wembley Stadium portion of Al Gore's Live Earth concerts on July 7, AP reports. Yes, all original members of mock rockers Spinal Tap are strapping on the skin-tight trousers and lace-up leather tops one more time for the London gig, which will also feature a cameo by Marty DeBergi (a.k.a. Rob Reiner), the (fake) documentarian who immortalized them on film in 1984's "This Is Spinal Tap." Reiner will also unveil a new 15-minute short he directed about the band's reunion on Wednesday at the Tribeca Film Festival. The group has recorded a new single for the occasion called "Warmer Than Hell." ...

Dave Navarro is launching his own weekly Internet series on ManiaTV called "Dave Navarro's Spread Entertainment," an hour-long variety show that will feature interviews, performances and comedy acts. The program, which debuts May 17, will be broadcast live from the Dragonfly nightclub in Hollywood and shot in front of a live audience. Navarro has described the show as "an avant-garde Internet talk show focusing on the arts and the human condition." ... The Cooper Temple Clause have decided to throw in the towel. According to guitarist Daniel Fisher, the break was initiated by his decision to leave the band last week. "In the wake of this decision, the rest of the boys agreed to call it a day and pursue other interests," he wrote in a statement. Papa Roach drummer Dave Buckner has decided to sit the rest of the band's current tour out due to unspecified personal reasons. Rosie O'Donnell announced her departure from "The View" on Wednesday's show, explaining that she couldn't agree on contract terms and will end her run in June. "It just didn't work," she said, "and that's showbiz." O'Donnell joined the show in September and has been at the center of controversy since she returned to daytime TV, including an ongoing battle with Donald Trump that often involved series co-host and creator Barbara Walters. "We have had, to say the least, an interesting year," Walters noted Wednesday, adding, "I do not participate in the negotiations for Rosie. ... This is not my doing."
