Nas, Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Thrill Fans At Rock The Bells

Mobb Deep, Slaughterhouse, Erykah Badu and more revisit classic material for a day of hip-hop celebration on New York stop.

NEW YORK — Thousands of rap fans gathered in hip-hop's birth city for a daylong celebration of the genre's classics. Nas, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all performed at the Rock the Bells 2011 festival on Governor's Island in New York City on Saturday (September 3).

The musical tour was comprised of four stages, including the main Rock the Bells stage, the Wu-inspired 36 Chambers stage and the underground-themed Paid Dues stage. More than 20 acts, including Mobb Deep, Slaughterhouse, Black Moon, Big K.R.I.T., the Immortal Technique and GZA, performed, with some dedicating their sets to their own classic albums; others devoted their shows to just a gang of fan-favorites.

The festivities kicked off at approximately 2 p.m. ET, and started off slow. Wu-Tang Clan's GZA fumbled through his 1995 sophomore album, Liquid Swords, as concertgoers ping-ponged back and forth between stages. Cypress Hill ran through selections from their Black Sunday LP. Marijuana anthems like "I Wanna Get High" and "Hits From the Bong" set the tone for a smoke-filled set that mixed equal parts rap, rock and Latin soul.

Mobb Deep didn't disappoint. Although they were advertised to perform only their 1995 breakout album, The Infamous, the Queens, New York, duo did so much more. In addition to tracks like "Shook Ones Pt. II," "Survival of the Fittest" and "Give Up the Goods," the Mobb dove into their catalog of street bangers, including "G.O.D. Pt. III" and "Quiet Storm," as well.

MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductee Big K.R.I.T. found his set overlapping with that of the Mobb's Havoc and Prodigy, but he was still able to draw a sizable crowd on the Paid Dues stage. The gatherers bounced energetically to Southern-fried selections like "Glass House" and "Country Sh--," proving that it wasn't just a day for rap veterans.

After drawing fan criticism about her previous live shows, Lauryn Hill promised at the beginning of her set to perform the songs from her The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album as they were recorded. Unfortunately, the plan was thrown out the window pretty quickly as she rapped to a ridiculously sped-up version of "Lost Ones." In fact, many of Ms. Hill's classics were performed quite differently from how fans may have remembered. Still, she did thrill audiences with almost-flawless renditions of "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "To Zion." There was also a Fugees reunion of sorts when Pras joined his former partner to rock "Ready or Not," but the warring Wyclef was nowhere to be found.

Before Hill could finish her set, Raekwon and Ghostface took to the 36 Chambers stage on the other side of the field. They opened with "Striving for Perfection," the opening skit from Rae's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... , and then tore into "Incarcerated Scarfaces," "Criminology" and "Ice Cream." It was a '90s-era dream come true, but unfortunately hip-hop's faithful were forced to choose, because halfway through Rae and Ghost's set, the night's headliner Nas, started his show on the main stage.

At around 10:30 p.m., the crowd gathered at Nas' stage, which was decorated with props made to mirror his native Queensbridge, New York, housing project. There was a backdrop with buildings, a real lamppost, project benches and a gate that stood as the entrance. It was 17 years ago that Nasir Jones dropped his highly regarded debut, Illmatic, and on Saturday night he maneuvered through the 10-track masterpiece starting with its opener, "Genesis." With DJ Premier backing him, Nas rapped the words to "N.Y. State of Mind" and "It Ain't Hard to Tell" with a ferocity that recalled the young MC in 1994.

Nas did, at times, depart from the Illmatic theme, treating his day-one fans to something special. First, he brought out MC Serch to perform their 1992 underground banger "Back to the Grill." Next up, he invited Joe Fatal, Akinyele and Large Professor to do "Live at the Barbeque," the 1991 song that gave Nas his rap debut.

From there, it was a full-on party as the Braveheart MC did his new single "Nasty," invited Lauryn back out for their collabo "If I Ruled the World" and closed with the hyped-up "Made Ya Look."

Before he left closed out the night, Nas shouted, "I love you New York City," and it was apparent that NYC loves him back.

RZA Recalls Being Challenged To Stop Sampling

'I hadn't paid my dues to music, and so I went and started studying theory,' Wu-Tang beatmaker tells Mixtape Daily.

RZA can chop a sample with the best of them. The chief Wu-Tang producer has flipped samples from Isaac Hayes and Gladys Knight to make classic hip-hop records like "C.R.E.A.M." and "Can It Be All So Simple," but it was a random encounter while buying music equipment that changed the Abbot's entire perspective on sampling music.

"The first thing happened was that I was at a music store buying equipment," RZA told Mixtape Daily. "I went platinum, I became a millionaire, I was probably feeling myself egotistically, going to Sam Ash to buy a whole bunch of equipment, and a regular musician stopped me because people were giving me attention, 'That's RZA, that's RZA.' And this guy said, 'You're ruining music.' "

Of course, a young RZA was taken aback at first. "He's a musician, but because of sampling, he can't get a job. Because of drum machines, his drummer can't get no work. He said, 'You're not a real musician.' I said, 'What you mean I'm not a real musician? I got a platinum album.' He said, 'You're not a real musician. You don't know nothing about music.' "

It was at that point that RZA's outlook began to change. "He was right. I couldn't tell him what a C note was. So he challenged me, basically," he said.

Feeling inspired, the Wu-beat banger started to study music theory and began to craft sample-free tracks. That, coupled with multiple lawsuits that he faced for reworking compositions from others, led to RZA's growth. "It's unfair sometimes for us to have success on things when we haven't paid our dues," he said. "So even though I paid my dues to hip-hop, I hadn't paid my dues to music, and so I went and started studying theory."

RZA Teases Unreleased ODB Material

'When you got an estate, it's so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with,' Wu-Tang mastermind says of late friend's music.

Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' ta eff wit, and neither are the RZA's beats. While in Berlin promoting his new headphone line, Chambers by RZA, the Wu producer told MTV News that he has given beats to a number of hip-hop artists, including Nas, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, as well as his cousin and Wu-partner GZA for his Liquid Swords 2 album.

"Me and GZA talked about doing Liquid Swords part 2, a sequel. We talked about it for a while," RZA said about the follow-up to GZA's 1995 album. "We actually started a little bit and then we pulled back based on scheduling, based on my movie."

RZA's love affair with Hollywood is no secret. As an actor, Bobby Digital has appeared in "American Gangster" alongside Russell Crowe and has recently been cast in "G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes." RZA has also been hard at work directing "The Man With the Iron Fists," a movie set in feudal China that will star Russell Crowe, Pam Grier and Lucy Liu.

"The movie has taken me out of the loop of music. But what I have been doing, I've been going to studios and inviting people to my studio. So I went to the studio with Luda and I emptied beats from my beat machine for him. Whether he use it or not is up to him, but I just been emptying out my beat machines," RZA said before revealing more of his collaborative hopefuls. "I emptied out some beats on Busta, I emptied out some beats on Nas, emptied out some beats for [Ghostface Killah] and for Wu-Tang Clan — just sent them 20 beats a few weeks ago."

Though he is very passionate about making movies at the moment, RZA knows music is what got him where he is today. "I really want to put a lot of my energy into film, but I know that I got here because of music and I know people dig my music. And I'm like, 'Why not put the music out there too?' "

Judging from his activity, it is a safe bet that fans can hear a lot of new RZA music in the near future, but anyone expecting to hear collaborations between the producer and his cousin, the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, shouldn't get their hopes up. While the Abbot does confirm that he has plenty of unreleased Ol' Dirty material, releasing those tunes would be quite difficult.

"That's a very tricky situation, because ODB has passed and he has an estate," he said. "When you got an estate, it's so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with. I tried to put out a song last year called 'Dirt's the Boogie,' and they threatened me with an injunction and I wrote the lyrics to the song. Made the beat, wrote the lyrics and Dirty just performed it."

Instead of holding onto the work, though, RZA is contemplating leaving the unheard recordings to Dirty's son when the time is right. "I will tell the fans, I do have a few 2-inch reels of material nobody has but me. I don't know what I'll do with it," he said. "Maybe in time I'll just give it to his son, I don't know."

RZA Joins Cast Of 'G.I. Joe' Sequel

Wu-Tang Clan member will play martial arts character Blind Master.

When the "G.I. Joe" sequel gets under way, fans will see an almost all-new cast that not only includes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson but could also feature Wu-Tang Clan rapper/producer-turned-actor RZA.

The beatmeister will play a martial arts expert named the Blind Master, who once trained Joe commandos Snake Eyes and Jinx (Elodie Yung of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to returning star Channing Tatum, another potential new face will be D.J. Cotrona, currently appearing on the TV show "Detroit 1-8-7." Both RZA and Cotrona are in negotiations to join the movie, which is being directed by Jon Chu ("Justin Bieber: Never Say Never").

" 'Joe' is something I've loved since I was a kid," Chu confessed to MTV News when word of his possible involvement first leaked earlier this year. "My era was 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,' 'G.I. Joe' and 'Transformers.' When 'Joe' changed their theme song from the old-style 'Go Joe!' to 'Got to get tough, go Joe!' that was the era I was in. Those are the fun, glory years that I remember."

Cotrona is slated to play a character named Flint, one of Joe's soldiers best known from the 1980s comics for his signature shotgun and beret.

The mainstream flick is one of the most high-profile popcorn movie roles to date for RZA, who has previously appeared in films such as "Due Date," "Kill Bill," "Funny People" and "American Gangster." He recently wrapped work directing the martial arts movie "The Man With the Iron Fists," in which he co-stars with Russell Crowe and blaxploitation icon Pam Grier. Raekwon Battles Himself On Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang

'It's ... dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew,' Rae tells MTV News of new solo LP.

Raekwon the Chef knows a thing or two about Shaolin and Wu-Tang. The title of the MC's fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, represents the New York City borough he hails from, Staten Island — whose street name in rap circles is Shaolin — and, of course, the MC has been a key member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan since its founding in the early '90s.

Ultimately, though, Rae's album, which dropped on Tuesday (March 8), is inspired (like many things Wu-Tang) by the classic 1981 Gordon Liu film of the same name, about a rivalry between two schools of ancient martial arts.

"[The film is about] basically two schools fighting with one another," Raekwon told MTV News recently about the movie's plot. "But they all come from the same school, and it was an outsider who actually tried to get the Shaolin style and the Wu-Tang style and have them go at one another. On this album, it's the same thing: It's two schools and, you know, I'm part of that school. I'm Shaolin but at the same time, I'm Wu-Tang. So really, it's ego versus discipline, dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew."

It's no coincidence that the concept behind Raekwon's album focuses on two forces in opposition. Rae began working on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang back in late 2007, after expressing disappointment with the creative direction Wu-Tang's nominal leader, the RZA, had taken with the group's '07 LP, 8 Diagrams. (Fellow Wu member Ghostface Killah went so far as to call the album "bullsh--" in an interview with MTV's "Sucker Free" at the time.)

In an interview the same year with Miss Info, Raekwon remarked: "RZA's trying to create too much of an orchestra, piano, you know ...he's trying to do too much of this guitar sh-- and we don't want that and the fans don't want that. I'm not having that. ... Realistically, what's gonna happen is ... if [8 Diagrams] comes out, we comin' out with another album."

Rae went on to release his critically acclaimed solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Part 2 in 2009, followed by 2010's Wu-Massacre, a collaboration album with fellow Wu members Ghostface and Method Man. The sonic direction of both projects returned to the gritty production style that Wu-Tang Clan had become known for.

But in that time, RZA and Rae also buried the hatchet. So while Rae's latest solo album was concieved during a feud, and uses that theme as its core, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang may turn out to be the album that shows Wu-Tang really is forever.

"You gonna hear a lot of loving songs in there, you gonna hear betrayal songs, you gonna hear action that takes place on some of the records," Rae explained. "But it all revolves around that world, that Shaolin/Wu-Tang world. They just battling one another, and at the end of the day, we all come to find out that we're one and the same. We fighting each other but we're the same."

RZA Files Order Against The Game's Purp & Patron

Wu-Tang Clan producer says 'Heartbreaker' was meant for The R.E.D. Album, not a mixtape.

Although the Game recently pushed out three albums' worth of material with his Purp & Patron double-disc mixtape and the bonus edition, Purp & Patron: The Hangover, not everyone is celebrating the Compton MC's prodigious output: Wu-Tang Clan's RZA filed a cease and desist order against the project when he discovered a song he produced for Game landed on the free project.

In an interview with HipHopDX.com, Game confirmed the legal action, saying he was surprised by the move. "That's f---ing crazy," Game told the website. "Like, I don't even know how RZA sues the Game. He came to the studio and brought the track to me. He's like, 'Yo, Game, this is for you. You can have that.' Those are his words."

According to RZA, however, the song was intended for Game's forthcoming album — not for a mixtape release.

In a statement released Monday by the Wu-Tang Clan member's assistant, RZA said he spoke with the Game's camp and that both parties agreed the track, "Heartbreaker," which features a sample from a Grand Funk Railroad tune of the same name, wouldn't make it onto The R.E.D. Album because there wasn't enough time to clear the sample before the album's release date, which has since been pushed back.

RZA said he asked Game's camp to notify him if they intended to use it in the future. Another offer for the track was then made to RZA, and the veteran boardsman said the incident makes it appear that he tried to sell his work twice. The statement did not mention, however, whether RZA notified Game's camp about the additional offer.

In a message RZA sent over Twitter, he attempted to defuse the situation, saying he has "nothing but love for Game."

Ol' Dirty Bastard's Son Talks Sixth Anniversary Of MC's Death

'It's best to just have a family meeting with everybody,' Young Dirty Bastard said of commemorating the day.

Six years ago, music lost one of its most memorable characters: Ol' Dirty Bastard.

Dirty passed away on November 13, 2004, just days before his 36th birthday, but he left behind an inimitable legacy both as a solo MC and an irreplaceable member of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Today his son Boy Jones, who also goes by Young Dirty Bastard, works hard to uphold his late father's legacy, whether it's through his unruly braids or stepping in to rip "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" with the Wu at Rock The Bells. When MTV News caught up with the budding rapper to ask how he commemorates his father's passing, the young Jones told us it's all about family.

"It's good to get family together," he said Saturday. "We wish we could do that more throughout the year ... but it's still beautiful on days like this."

While Dirt McGirt's unhinged energy and wobbly flow still resonates with fans, Jones said his favorite memory of the fallen hip-hop great has nothing to do with his music.

"Him eating clams with hot sauce," he pegged as his most treasured memory. "That's probably the first time I had clams in my life. That's something that I do on the regular. I just went to [a] sushi bar last night."

Invoking Dirty's memory is a regular thing for Boy Jones, who said he reminds people of his father "all the time."

"It's in my blood, it's supposed to be like that," he said. However, he did admit that there is added pressure to being a second-generation hip-hop artist and heir to Dirty's game-changing style. "Some people be just hating a lot. [Saying] 'He's not like Dirty ... He's trying too hard to be like Dirty.' " Jones countered with, "It's in my blood ... he's my pops."

Young Dirty also has the same philosophy about government assistance as his pops, who famously let MTV tag along while he received food-stamp benefits in a limo during a 1995 interview. The rising MC said he's working on a movie called "Food Stamp Celebrity" and a mixtape with DJ Absolut of the same title.

"Basically everybody that I know is on food stamps, and I'm on food stamps, and basically we all trying to be a celebrity," he explained of the flick. "I'm gonna be a celebrity and I'm gonna be on food stamps at the same time."

He added that his reliance on EBT benefits stems from a need to make sure food is always on the table, even if he's low on cash.

"Food stamp really save people life," he said. "Without food stamps, you be waiting on some checks from one of your cousins, and they move slow with the check, and [in the meantime] food stamps will really save your life."

In addition to "Food Stamp Celebrity," Jones said he's also crafting a mixtape called Certified Crack with DJ Symphony, who spins for the MC's Wu uncle Raekwon. Despite mixtape titles that could be dubbed gimmicky, the 21-year-old spitter maintains he can crank out a range of musical styles that both club-goers and scholars can appreciate.

"I can go from ... making Soulja Boy music to making Nas music. I'm a real artist, I don't play," he said. "I ain't gonna front, I don't like Soulja Boy at all. But the music he's putting out there, I see little children vibing off of it. 'Cause you make the children dance, then that's music."

And of course, as Dirty once reminded us (and Shawn Colvin), Wu-Tang is for the children. Stage-crashing, jail time and general rowdiness aside, the younger Jones said he wants fans to know that, ultimately, Dirty was just trying to shake up the status quo.

"He was a person that was trying to change the world, and he had a different view but nobody really understood it. If he would have had just a little more time I think it would have happened," Jones said, adding that his father wanted to launch his own government and police force. "We all for the people. We all here for change."

Wu-Tang Clan Announce Winter Tour Dates

The Wu's concert lineup kicks off December 4 in San Diego and wraps on New Year's Eve in Pennsylvania.

The Wu-Tang Clan will take their act on the road this winter. The New York collective is set to launch a limited U.S. trek with a jaunt kicking off December 4 in San Diego. The Wu will also make stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, New York City and Philadelphia before wrapping things up in Millvale, Pennsylvania, on New Year's Eve.

The crew most recently toured this past summer as part of the Rock the Bells Tour. That run featured the Wu performing tracks from their seminal debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Standing in for the late Ol' Dirty Bastard was the charismatic rapper's son Boy Jones. The upstart explained his excitement about joining the legendary act on the road and how he'd honed his own skills to be stage-ready.

"It feels great," Jones told MTV News at the time. "It's me. It's his son. A son is like a father, he always gotta do what his father does. He's born in that type of way. It ain't nothing else to it. I got the call from RZA [to go on tour] when I was feeding my babies baby food. 'You going on the tour.' I'm running. I need that bread. Young Dirty Bastard raps hard too. I ain't doing it for free. I need money and I rap hard."

Raekwon Co-Directing 'C.R.E.A.M.' Movie

Rae teams with Damon Dash for 'Cash Rules Everything Around Me,' plans to stay behind the scenes for the film.

2010 is turning out to be a major year for Raekwon. After pulling off successful appearances with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan at this summer's Rock the Bells Tour and jumping on a remix of Justin Bieber's "Runaway Love" with Kanye West, the Chef has been cooking up a lot of buzz. Now, the Wu O.G. is setting his sights on Hollywood. The hip-hop luminary has revealed that he's stepping behind the lens for a new flick.

"I'm working on a movie called 'C.R.E.A.M.' that I co-directed with one of my partners. We teamed up with [Damon] Dash," Raekwon told New York Magazine in an interview published Friday (September 3). "Y'all gonna be hearing more about this movie that we're putting together called 'C.R.E.A.M.' It's called 'Cash Rules Everything Around Me.' It's a lot of things transpiring right now, but I just want to continue to stay in my zone, stay focused and keep working."

The MC didn't divulge too many details about the project, which shares its title with a classic banger from the 1993 Wu LP Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). He did, however, insist that he's going to stay behind the scenes and has no plans to appear onscreen.

"I'm playing the outskirts on this one because I kind of feel like that's where I'm at. You know, I don't know. At this point, I probably won't be in it, but we don't know," Rae said, "I want to more or less capture the scenes from the outside looking in, because I want it to be something that people say is a classic, and they respect the storyline of where we went with it."

Raekwon also announced on Twitter that fans may be getting a taste of the flick very soon. "Believe it or not hopefully this week and nyc we will be shooting a trailer for the movie C.R.E.A.M so lookout for it!" the Wu MC tweeted on Friday.

The Immobilarity lyricist said he's been looking to kick off the project for a minute and believes the time has come to make the film happen.

"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time, even when we was making [the 2009 release] Cuban Linx II, I was already making it my business to obligate time to that, to putting the script together. It's where it needs to be right now," Rae said. "I'm just trying to be a machine. A roller coaster machine, man."

In addition to the "C.R.E.A.M." movie, Rae has been working on his upcoming effort Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang which he's planning to drop later this year.

Just looking at 21-year-old Boy Jones, it's clear he's his father's son. Jones wears a T-shirt with an image of his pop, the late great Ol' Dirty Bastard, taking up most of the real estate on the front.

It's late August, the day before the Rock the Bells tour kicked off its four-city run. Jones is in San Bernardino, California, at the NOS Events Center. Snoop Dogg is at one side of the park rehearsing and members of the Wu-Tang Clan are inside at another part. GZA is playing chess, and RZA is onstage, guiding his cousin the Young Dirty Bastard through a Wu classic, "Shame on a N---a." It's a signature song from the Shaolin Swordsmen's 1993 debut LP, on which Dirt McGirt stole the show.

The next night, while the real performance was going, Young Dirty brought high energy for "Shame," and during a tribute to Dirty senior, for which Boy Jones performed "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," the youngster ran out with no shirt and jumped into the audience.

" 'Shimmy Shimmy' with no shirt on? I couldn't help it," Jones said a week later, this time at New York's Governors Island. "It's like a baby running around naked. Once you start, you have to let go of everything. Be a free spirit. Surprise yourself. The fans give you the energy. I'mma get naked regardless."

Sound familiar? Jones — even at a young age — has that unorthodox wisdom his dad was famous for. He also shares the same unpredictable energy and even the same hairstyle. YDB sports the braids sticking straight up in the air like ODB had.

"He looks just like him. Scrappy Doo to the fullest," Raekwon the Chef laughed. "Dirty was Scooby and his son is Scrappy all the way. He looks just like his father. When I tell you he's got his father's style down pat, am I lying? Nope. He's his father to the maximum. When I see him, I see his father."

"I love Boy Jones," Method Man said after the Wu performed at Governors Island. "His grandmother is here, Dirty's mother. I know she's lookin' up and she's proud of him. I'm proud of him, too."

"It feels great," Jones said about performing with his dad's squadron. "It's me. It's his son. A son is like a father, he always gotta do what his father does. He's born in that type of way. It ain't nothing else to it. I got the call from RZA [to go on tour] when I was feeding my babies baby food. 'You going on the tour.' I'm running. I need that bread. Young Dirty Bastard raps hard, too. I ain't doing it for free. I need money and I rap hard.

"They the gods and I'm the young god," Dirty added about what he's learned from traveling and performing with Wu-Tang. "It's like when you go to school for the first time and you're really scared, but you have teachers who really teach you. You can't know anything without somebody giving it to you. They give it to me real. They don't tell it to me fake. I might break a few rules and they put me in check. They teach me. I'm the young god."

Young Dirty is working on his first big mixtape. Besides Meth, Rae and Ghostface, he wants to work with 9th Wonder. Boy is talking to DJ Absolut about hosting the project.

"My music is coming with an Ol' natural style," Jones explained. "Ol' Dirty Bastard had the sh--. I'm just the new sperm of the generation. And you know I'm gonna have it. I'm born with it."

The Streets Is Talking

A few days ago, Raekwon leaked the trailer for the "Ason Jones" video. The Chef said paying tribute to his friend was always in the plans.

"As far as the video is concerned, it's something I wanted to add to the collection of videos I got out there. Dirty is my heart. Same way how everybody got fallen soldiers around them or in their circle that they lost, he is one I really appreciate. At the end of the day, I'm always keeping him right here."
