A Cosmic Effort: The stars are aligning for Busta Rhymes' new album — it's his first for Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint and has a good chance of breathing new life into Bus' career. But the stars are also aligning on the record, what with Nas, Missy Elliott, Will.I.Am, Q-Tip, Raekwon — hell, even Stevie Wonder and the late Rick James — cropping up on there. "You Can't Hold the Torch," Rhymes declares midway through the record. Let's see if he can.

Outta Sight: Be on the lookout this week, as two of the biggest music releases hitting stores are meant for the eyes, not the ears. No Doubt's "Live in the Tragic Kingdom," which found its way into a million VHS players, reaches the DVD format bundled with unreleased home movies, more performances, backstage stuff, promo clips and a slideshow.

"Chris Brown's Journey," on the other hand, is all-new material by the R&B phenom and revolves around a 25-minute documentary featurette, rather than concert footage. Still, there is some live content — two numbers from Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards party — plus three videos (with making-of segments for each), bloopers, Easter eggs and "Krumping With Chris," wherein he busts his best moves. The bonus CD has two unissued slices — "So Glad" and a remix of "Run It" — and a software device that lets you do your best Scott Storch and remix "Gimme That."

Sonic Youth probably aren't expecting Kidz Bop-like numbers with their newest opus, Rather Ripped, which is why they've been streaming all 12 tracks for free online. The band returned to what it calls its "OG nucleus" of Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo, as fifth member Jim O'Rourke was busy studying language and film in Japan. Tracks include "Do You Believe in Rapture?," "Turquoise Boy" and "Or."

Sibling Revelry: Speaking of OGs, "We O.G.'s" is the lead single from the Reyes Brothers — the long-awaited matchup of Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace. That tune features fellow West Coasters Snoop Dogg and Warren G, while the rest of Ghetto Therapy hosts two Bishops — Lamont and Don Magic Juan — plus Sen's Cypress Hill teammate, B Real.

Also showing signs of brotherly love are Aron and Robert Mardo, whose band goes by their last name. The group's second outing, The New Gun, showcases the unit's new keyboardist and guitarist, but the deaths of nine people close to the group in one month made "The Healing" undeniably grim.

Guitarist Mato Nanji is taking a different approach: While he originally made his band Indigenous a family effort, he's since given his siblings the boot so he can focus entirely on the undertaking himself. The American Indian singer/songwriter did co-write "The Way You Shake" with his sister Wanbdi, but he left the production duties to Steve Fishell (Willie Nelson, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band).

Beyond the Stereo: Alas, a handful of this week's releases might actually make you leave your bedroom. Jam titans Widespread Panic are playing their new LP, Earth to America, in its entirety at a free show at New York's Irving Plaza on Tuesday night (June 13). While 100,000 people showed up for the band's 1998 CD release party, expect 1,000 or so of the Panic faithful to help celebrate the band's 20th anniversary.

John Fogerty will drive some fans to cineplexes Tuesday, as the release of his "The Long Road Home in Concert" DVD is being celebrated with one-night-only theatrical showings in eight major cities. Speaking of which, Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" DVD, which sold a fair number of tickets earlier this year, hits the shelves in double-disc form this week.

And so-called "multimedia art-punk terrorists" the Residents are forcing you to get off your couch if you're interested in their River of Crime project, a series of recordings that are only available at Virgin Megastores, Cordless.com or New York's Museum of Modern Art. Modeled after true-crime radio broadcasts, the five episodes were previously available online in serial form.

Spotted: Gwen Stefani sweetening up "All Nighter" on Together as One by reggae hero Elan of the Wailers; Motion City Soundtrack, Plain White T's, Nightmare of You and other pop-punk newcomers giving it up for their favorite caped hero on the Sounds of Superman compilation; Eddie Vedder, Ani DiFranco and Steve Earle showing their mugs in the bonus video content that accompanies the "Dead Man Walking" soundtrack reissue; Replacements Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars coming back together to record their first new material in 16 years for Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements; MF Grimm and Angelo from Fishbone hopping onto Krak Attack by underground hip-hop bizarro CX Kidtronik; Origin drummer John Longstreth hitting the toms on Skinless' brutal Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead; and Fountains of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter adding licks to Life in the Shade, the second album by Brookville, the latest venture of Ivy's Andy Chase.

Song Title of the Week:

"Pudgy Young Blondes With Lobotomy Eyes" from Zao's The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here

Other Notables:

Regina Spektor's Begin to Hope: She's made a name for herself by touring with the Strokes, lending her voice to an mtvU commercial and spelling her last name slightly differently than a certain embattled record producer, but will the anti-folk antihero be able to overcome her nemesis, black-metal wizards Spektr? Their Near Death Experience drops this week as well, but expect Spektor's Begin to Hope — limited versions of which boast a five-track bonus disc — to win out.

The Futureheads' News and Tributes: Hurry, 'Heads heads, as only the initial pressings of the U.K. breakout band's second LP will have three bonus tracks that previously appeared on its Area EP. Producer Ben Hillier (Depeche Mode, Blur) holed up with the quartet in his Scarborough studio, where they crafted "Return of the Berserker," "Worry About It Later" and "Favours for Favours."

Final Fantasy's He Poos Clouds: Sometimes the track list just says it all, like this roster by Toronto's very own one-man orchestra. Each song is supposed to correlate with a level in "Dungeons & Dragons," so test your skills accordingly: "Arctic Circle," "He Poos Clouds," "This Lamb Sells Condos," "If I Were a Carp," "I'm Afraid of Japan," "Song Song Song," "Many Lives 49 LP," "Do You Love" and "Pooka Sings."

The Dave Matthews Band and Modest Mouse will top an eclectic bill of more than 60 jam, rock and jazz acts at the fourth annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee.

The three-day concert, which takes place June 10-12 on a 700-acre farm 60 miles south of Nashville, will also feature sets from Joss Stone, the Mars Volta, Widespread Panic, Rilo Kiley, Jack Johnson, My Morning Jacket, O.A.R. and the Secret Machines. More acts will be announced soon, according to an event spokesperson.

Also slated to perform are the Allman Brothers Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, John Prine, Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, Toots & the Maytals, Umphrey's McGee, Iron & Wine, Ozomatli, Drive-By Truckers, Particle, Citizen Cope and the Brazilian Girls.

The sprawling festival is again expected to feature an area with plenty of non-musical diversions, which have not yet been announced. Last year's extras included morning yoga classes, a playground, batting cages, roving street performers, a movie tent, arcade games and Internet cafes.

Three-day tickets go on sale on January 29 and will range from $146.50-$172.50, which includes camping and parking.

Last year's festival, which drew approximately 90,000 people, featured sets from the Dead, Bob Dylan, Wilco, Gomez, Damien Rice, Kings of Leon, Maroon 5, Primus, Willie Nelson and a solo set from Matthews that included Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio (see "Bonnaroo Recap: Melting Heat And A Melting Pot Of Music"). A live CD and DVD from the 2004 show will be released in April.

Get ready for revenge of the N.E.R.D. This week, super-producers the Neptunes put the spotlight on their rock outfit, N.E.R.D. Their second album, Fly or Die, features the single "She Wants to Move" and a guest appearance by Good Charlotte's Benji Madden on "Jump."

The 15th edition features "Toxic" by Britney Spears, "Holidae In" by Chingy, "I Don't Want You Back," by Eamon and "With You" by Jessica Simpson. In other compilation news, Ruben Studdard and Simple Plan appear on the "Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" soundtrack.

Two live classic-rock double-disc sets will be released this week. The Allman Brothers Band's One Way Out was recorded at the Beacon Theater in New York, and Lou Reed's Animal Serenade was taped at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Most music awards celebrations focus on honoring winners and manage to sandwich a few performances between the presentations. The Jammys take the opposite approach.

Wednesday night at New York's Roseland Ballroom, organizers for the third annual event recognized Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio (Studio Album of the Year for Trey Anastasio, Tour of the Year), Phish (Archival Album of the Year for Phish — Live Phish 11: 11/17/97), Gov't Mule (Song of the Year for "Soulshine"), and Widespread Panic (Live Album of the Year for Live in the Classic City), among others. But it was the many eclectic jams that kept the ceremony raging until 2:30 a.m.

The Jammys were hosted by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper and included performances by John Mayer, Bob Weir and Ratdog, Mike Gordon (Phish), Leo Kottke, Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), Gov't Mule, John Scofield, Stanton Moore (Galactic), Andy Hess (Black Crowes), Scratch (the Roots), DJ Logic, Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson (B-52's), Tom Tom Club, moe., Rusted Root, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Particle, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

As jaw-dropping as many of the solo-filled jams were, it was the colorful collaborations that were most captivating. During Gov't Mule's set, the Allman Brothers Band took the stage for "Desdemona," Anastasio and Scofield raised eyebrows with the Mule on "Sco-Mule," and Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks returned to the stage to jam with Anastasio and Gov't Mule on "Soulshine." Also during the evening, Blue Oyster Cult took the stage with moe. to perform "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," and the B-52's rocked with Particle on "Love Shack."

For the conclusion of the Jammys, a long parade of musicians jammed on two stages for an endless version of "Lovelight." Ratdog took the main stage with Anastasio, guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts (Gov't Mule), Al Schnier (moe.), Popper and DJ Logic. At the same time, the second stage was packed by Gordon, Fuzz (Deep Banana Blackout), Randolph and others, as artists from both stages dueled one another for jam-rock supremacy.

But even after all that, the players weren't jammed out, and many joined moe. at BB King's club down the street to continue rocking until past 5 a.m. Around 3 a.m., Anastasio took the stage for "Happy Hour Hero" and "Recreational Chemistry," which also featured Particle keyboardist Steve Molitz. Then Haynes and Percy Hill keyboardist Nate Wilson took the stage for "Opium," which featured a snippet of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood," and Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva."

In the club's side room Particle were joined by Neville Brothers keyboardist Ivan Neville for "Metropolis," and bassist Lessard and saxophonists Jessica Lurie (Living Daylights) and Sam Kininger (Soulive) kept the beer flowing with a performance of "Windjammer."

In addition to a legion of adoring fans, late Widespread Panic guitarist Michael Houser left behind his debut solo album when he passed away on August 10 from pancreatic cancer.

The all-instrumental effort, Door Harp, is due on September 24 and features Houser playing guitar, mandolin and piano and is described by producer John Keane (R.E.M., Cowboy Junkies) as "an ethereal, laid-back kind of thing that feels like the different seasons. It's the kind of thing you might listen to while meditating."

Keane, who plays Hammond organ, steel guitar and pedal steel on the 14-track album, said Houser began the sessions in early March, one week after being diagnosed with the terminal illness (see "Widespread Panic Co-Founder Dies Of Cancer").

"The disease hadn't gotten so far along that it was affecting his playing," Keane said. "He was in good shape and he was good for three or four hours a day when he was comfortable and not hampered by the medication. It was a stressful time, but he was determined to carry on."

Keane said the old friends didn't talk about it at the time, but they both had a sense that Door Harp would be the last album Houser would record.

"These songs are the ones I've played on my own, at home, for years. They are simple and calming," Houser is quoted as saying in a press release. "I wanted to record these songs in a minimalist and quiet way that was true to their nature."

The folky tracks mostly feature acoustic guitar and piano, with percussion by Panic's Domingo Ortiz and some additional violin, cello and flugelhorn by some of Keane's regular session players.

Though they were written before Houser's diagnosis, Keane said some of the songs have a melancholy feel to them, especially in the melodies the producer laid down after Houser had finished his parts. "[His illness] affected my state of mind and what melodies I came up with," Keane said.

"Spanish Gold" has a mournful flugelhorn melody that Keane described as "something you'd hear in a spaghetti western." A song dedicated to Houser's wife, "Barbette's Song," is somewhat ethereal, while the track "Missoula" is upbeat and bright. "He was a very private, reserved person but he had a real whimsical sense of humor that comes through in the music," Keane said. "He wanted the songs to be sparse and open, kind of spacious and uncomplicated."

Houser had also recorded an album featuring vocals in his home studio, according to Keane. It is expected to be released at an as-yet-undetermined date after some additional studio work.

The remaining members of Panic will keep Houser's spirit alive by doing what they've always done: touring. A 13-date fall outing will kick off with their annual run of Halloween shows, which will take place over three nights at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on October 31, November 1 and 2. Joining them on the dates will be Kudzu Kings guitarist George McConnell and Traffic sax player Randall Bramblett.

Panic will also be featured on the live disc Bonnaroo Music Festival 2002, due September 24, performing "Tall Boy," and the band will release the DVD documentary "The Earth Will Swallow You" in October. Filmed by Christopher and Geoffrey Hanson ("Scrapple"), the road flick chronicling the band's summer 2000 tour was compiled from over 500 hours of footage. It features performances, backstage footage and collaborations with Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane), Taj Mahal and Vic Chesnutt.

Widespread Panic tour dates, according to the band's spokesperson:

Michael Houser, lead guitar player and a founding member of Athens, Georgia, jam band Widespread Panic, died at his home August 10 from complications due to pancreatic cancer. He was 40.

Houser's last performance with the group was July 2, after which he dropped off the road to battle his illness (see "For The Record: 07.17.02").

Known for his stylistically diverse playing style, Houser incorporated elements of jazz, blues and rock into his performance. As accomplished as he was, Houser didn't showboat. His solos were shorter than those of many other jam bands and his playing complemented the music without overshadowing it.

"He had a very unique style, and his style was a big part of Widespread Panic's sound," said his friend Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule. "He just kind of flowed like stream of consciousness."

In addition to being an accomplished musician, Houser was an optimistic and enthusiastic guy who cherished being with his friends as much as he treasured playing music with them. When he left the band last month, he issued a statement that read in part, "I am at my home in Athens, surrounded by my family, and being well taken care of. In the words of Lou Gehrig, 'Though some of you may have thought I have caught a bad break, I feel like the luckiest man in the world.' "

"Mikey was one of those people that always had a smile on his face and always made other people feel good," Haynes said. "We're gonna miss him a lot."

Houser planted the seeds of Widespread Panic in 1982 when he started jamming with vocalist John Bell in college. The next year bassist David Schools joined, and the band chose the name Widespread Panic because of Houser's nickname "Panic." In 1986, the band began to cement its long-term lineup by recruiting drummer Todd Nance, percussionist Domingo Ortiz and keyboardist John Hermann.

The group's first record, Space Wrangler, was released in 1988, and over the next 13 years the band released six more records and three live albums. When Houser left the tour last month, the group's friends George McConnell and Randall Bramblett filled in. As press time, it was unknown whether the group would play its scheduled shows on August 17 and 18 at the Seven Fiddlers' Music Festival in Greenwood Village, Colorado.

All of the content on the official Widespread Panic Web site has been temporarily blocked, leaving only a message from the band that reads, "In this very sad time, we encourage you to gather with your Panic families in your hometown and celebrate Michael Houser's life on Monday, August 12. Our hearts are with you as we know that your thoughts and prayers are with us."

A private funeral is being planned for Houser. Contributions can be made to the Michael Houser Music Fund c/o Athens Academy, PO Box 6458, Athens, GA 30604.

"Mike, his wife Barbette, and his son Waker have all been deeply involved with Athens Academy," read a press statement. "Through this fund, the school will be able to provide children with the opportunities to discover the richness and wonder of music that so enriched Michael's own life."

MANCHESTER, Tennessee — The inaugural Bonnaroo Music Festival
treated more than 70,000 fans to three days of camping and music this past
weekend, proving that the reality of successful large American rock
festivals did not burn down with the fires that engulfed Woodstock '99.

While that festival three summers ago culminated in frightening scenes and
utter chaos, Bonnaroo offered an entirely peaceful weekend of eclectic music
featuring performances by Jurassic 5, Widespread Panic, Ben Harper and Jack
Johnson. With a lineup of 42 artists that brought together almost all of the
marquee acts in the jam band universe, the festival went off smoothly,
turning a 500-acre farm in Central Tennessee into a virtual amusement park
for music lovers.

Given the jam band scene's penchant for collaborations, naturally there were
many, and the artists appeared to be having the time of their lives playing
to enthusiastic crowds with their fellow musicians. The result was a weekend
of high-energy performances from performers like Southern rockers Widespread
Panic and Warren Haynes' Gov't Mule. There was groove-laden funk supplied by
scene favorites such as Galactic, Soulive and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe.

Hip-hop artists Blackalicious and Jurassic 5 earned new followers among the
tie-dyed fans with blistering sets that many thought were the highlights of
the weekend. Jurassic 5 brought down the house, even trying out some cuts
from their upcoming Power in Numbers, due in September.

Those who wanted to simply sit in the sun and relax with some tunes were
treated to a rare acoustic set by Harper and a solid performance by rising
star Johnson, whose chilled-out acoustic cuts from his recent bluesy
Brushfire Fairytales were the perfect complement to the tasty
microbrews on hand.

Those more inclined toward electronica could enjoy the Disco Biscuits, who
will release their fourth album this fall, Senor Boombox.
California-based newcomers Particle brought their intense "space porn funk"
to the ballroom stage on Saturday afternoon but returned for what the
"Particle people" were really hoping for later on — an unannounced set
that started around 5 a.m. and ended at 8.

Bonnaroo also made sure not to disappoint fans of those acts typically
associated with the jam band movement. Although the Grateful Dead and Phish
are not currently touring, they were well represented when Phil Lesh and
Friends with special guest Bob Weir took the stage Sunday afternoon followed
by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio's new band.

Lesh and Weir jammed through Dead classics, keeping them fresh and full of
energy. As the opening notes of "Franklin's Tower" echoed throughout the
massive venue, faces in the dancing crowd beamed with smiles. Perhaps it was
during those two hours that Bonnaroo seemed most perfect, as the music that
started it all was enjoyed live under the late-afternoon Tennessee sun.

Guitarist and reigning jam band king Anastasio and his nine-piece band
closed the festival with two sets of material largely taken from his recent
self-titled solo release. The new material is firmly rooted in a mixture of
Afro-beat and psychedelia, and although his live show recently blew away
crowds at smaller venues like New York's Radio City Music Hall, his music
seemed almost too sophisticated and complicated for the concert field at
Bonnaroo. The glowstick wars initiated by the crowd didn't complement
Anastasio's new tunes the same way they did during Phish shows. Nonetheless,
festival-long anticipation of Anastasio busting out some Phish songs or even
reuniting with Phish at Bonnaroo was met by his encore solo acoustic
performances of Phish favorites "Wilson" and "Bathtub Gin."

Perhaps as remarkable as the music, however, was the fact that organizers
managed to stage the biggest party in America last weekend while maintaining
a peaceful vibe throughout. Around 3:30 in the morning on Saturday, Denson
begged the massive crowd to shout back at him a refrain from one of his
band's infectious, groove-laden numbers: "If it's all right with you,
suddenly it's all right with me!" Everyone yelled it over and over as loud
as they could as the fireworks that had been exploding all weekend
continued. Denson's refrain might as well have been Bonnaroo's motto.
