When production duo Play N Skillz started putting out feelers for people to appear on the remix of Lil Wayne's "Got Money" — a track they produced — Travis Barker was one of the first people to respond and record his part for it. One day before the recent plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured Barker and DJ AM, the drummer was in the studio, giving "Got Money" a beautiful beat-down with brand-new thunderous beats.

"We talked to Lil Chris [Baker], his assistant who died in the crash," Play told MTV News on Sunday in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the brothers were performing as part of the third annual New Mexico Takeover. "[Chris] was lining up the remix thing with Travis. I'd never met Travis, but we spoke two days before this happened. He went in the studio, did the 'Got Money' remix. We were really excited about that. Then you wake up one morning, and it's like, 'F---!' "

"It shows how fast something can happen," Skillz added. "The day before his crash, he had just did the drums to the 'Got Money' remix."

Play N Skillz said they took it upon themselves to try to spearhead a remix to the smash single. On Sunday, they had not yet spoken to Wayne personally about the new song but had talked to members of his camp.

(Go to the Newsroom blog to watch Barker and DJ AM rehearse for the VMAs and check out their full VMA performances.)

The duo said Sunday that there could be multiple remixes for the song, suggesting that one remix could feature just Barker on the drums, another might have Travis and various other MCs (they mentioned Slim Thug, Bun B and Game), or Weezy might decide to lay down some new vocals. At press time the MC details had not been finalized, but Barker's contribution was complete.

"We took it upon ourselves," Play said of the remix. "So many people are doing remixes anyways. We spoke to [Wayne's artist] Mack Maine, who's on the record. We told him what was going on. This whole process with Wayne has never been a very personal relationship. It's been so third-party, but it works. He probably doesn't want to be bothered with that type of thing. I guess he's like, 'Let me get in my space and do what I do.' If Wayne gets involved, even better. I didn't think he's not gonna wanna be a part of it. We're just trying to be innovative, and if anything, it can go to the Internet and to the fans."

Besides the Wayne remix, Barker was also working on several songs for Paul Wall's upcoming LP, The Fast Life, before the crash.

Barker and DJ AM remain hospitalized in Georgia following Friday night's crash. They are in serious but stable condition. The two entertainers were the only two survivors of six passengers. In addition to Baker, Barker's bodyguard, Charles "Che" Still, and the plane's pilots died in the crash. Barker and AM suffered serious burns but are expected to make full recoveries.

Paul Wall has had little reason to show off his famously iced-out grills in the last two weeks. He hasn't been smiling much.

First, on September 13, Hurricane Ike tore through Houston, Wall's hometown. Then his three good friends Travis Barker, DJ AM and "Lil" Chris Baker were in a plane crash on Friday night. Baker and three others were killed, while Barker and AM remain hospitalized in a Georgia burn center. And back in July, he told SOHH.com that his good friend Emanuel Hobbs was killed in a shootout in Houston.

"Just sitting at home has been depressing," Wall said, adding that he has spent the past few days "thinking about my friends going through the plane crash, thinking about not having any power [in the city], sulking in my misery."

Wall tried to fly to his friends' side upon hearing of the crash Saturday morning, but he couldn't get a flight out of Houston. The airports are still backed up after the hurricane. So after performing at the New Mexico Takeover concert on Sunday, Wall said he would travel to Los Angeles to meet with his friends' families, then visit AM and Barker in Georgia.

Luckily, Houston is getting back on its feet, and Wall said he feels comfortable leaving his wife and two kids at home.

"Everybody is just trying to get back to normal," he said. "Most of the businesses and stuff lost power, and their windows broke. They had trouble with their roofs. It's just taking a minute for people to get back to normal. Day by day, more people are getting power."

Before the fury of Hurricane Ike, Wall had been touring with AM and Barker.

"Travis and AM do these shows," Paul explained. "They do, like, an hour-and-a-half set. They remix songs live. All the hottest music from today, the hottest music from the past we grew up listening too. AM will blend different vocals and beats. Travis will just do different drum patterns. It was so off the hook. You've never seen nothing like it ever, till you've seen one of their shows. I do a lot of special appearances where I come out and do a couple of songs for a minute. It's a whole lot of fun."

Barker produced several tracks for Wall's next LP, The Fast Life, which is slated to come out around the end of this year or the beginning of next year. Wall said three or four of those should make the cut.

"Travis Barker is a fool on the drums, but he got a lot of tricks up his sleeve with the hip-hop scene, on the hip-hop production side," Wall told MTV News at the VMAs. "He produced a few songs on my last album and a few on my upcoming one too. One of them is called 'I've Got to Get Mo'; that one's the best. Another one is called 'Ride It to the End.' Another one is called 'Pop One of These.' We have a lot of fun in the studio every time we get together. 'I've Got to Get Mo' is with an artist named Koby singing the chorus on there. Travis did the production, and he kind of came to me with the idea for the song: 'We got to get it, we got to get out there and hustle, and get our grind on.' That's what the song is about, because work-related wise, you just put in your hours, and you reap the benefits."

Chamillionaire, Keak Da Sneak and Lil' Keke also appear on the project. Akon sings on the first single, "Girl Is on Fire."

"You know how Akon is. When he gets on there, and he just shut it off, he turned everything upside down," the People's Champ said. "Just like he did on every other song, he produced it as well. We swap out here and there."

'Harry Potter' Gets Love From Robert Pattinson, Lupe Fiasco, Keira Knightley And More Celeb Fans

'He's getting a little more gangsta,' Paul Wall says of boy wizard, who celebrates his 10th 'birthday' this week.
By Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by Josh Horowitz

Harry Potter has his 10-year "birthday" this week, but it's not just the fantasy crowd that's celebrating (either with wizard-rock shows or readathons).

We checked in with a variety of musicians and actors (some from the films, some not) to see what they thought about the boy wizard and how he's impacted their lives. We thought we might get laughed at — after all, a lot of these folks were walking the red carpet at the VMAs and probably had something far more glamorous to attend to. But mention Harry Potter, and some people just light up.

Here are a few of them:

Keira Knightley: "I've read all the books. I haven't seen the films, except the first one. What's the alley where they get the wands from? [Diagon Alley.] That's an amazing image. Harry, he's pretty cool. He's got a good scar."

Jeremy Davis (Paramore): "Hell, yeah, I love 'Harry Potter'! I feel like 'Harry Potter,' the books and the movies, went above and beyond any other series. It would be a tough series to compete with. I would hate to try to compete against it."

Kellan Lutz ("Twilight"): "I love 'Harry Potter.' I actually wanted 'Harry Potter' as competition for 'Twilight,' because you'd be seeing the wizard side of fantasy and then jumping into the vampire life. Everyone I talk to is so obsessed with it. I always wished I had powers. I always wished I had a stick and a broom! It's a great story. It's so well-written. I think 'Harry Potter' hit everything. It set the precedent, that peak of Mount Everest, and we all want to climb that mountain. I just wish there were as many books to make movies of in 'Twilight' as there are in 'Harry Potter.' "

Robert Pattinson (Cedric in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," Edward in "Twilight"): "Does it make me a traitor? 'Harry Potter' was what made me become an actor. I credit 'Harry Potter' with everything else that's come since for me. I didn't know what I was doing before that. I hadn't read the books before doing the movie, so at first I read it just as an acting exercise. But I really enjoyed it! But I think Edward would kick Cedric's ass, to be honest."

Lupe Fiasco: "I'm a spectator of the entire phenomenon, you know what I'm saying? The entire phenomenon inspires me. I love Harry Potter [he points to his own specs] because of the glasses."

Kaycee Stroh ("High School Musical"): "The character I relate to the most is Hermione, because she's a bit of a spitfire and she always saves the day. I step into her shoes when necessary. I love her and relate to her. I think the series has a wonderful message about how every kid has that struggle of not fitting in, and it's very inspiring to realize through the hero of the story that that's not all that matters. The reason I love it is because it teaches us to use our imagination and our hearts. We're never too old to have fun."

Paul Wall: "The first two movies were a little too childish, but as Harry grew up, as he's growing up, he's getting a little more gangsta. It's getting a little more intense and action-packed, so I like it even more now. I don't have a favorite character, and if I did have a favorite, my wife and my sister [who are even bigger fans] would roast me for that."

Jonathan Davis (Korn): "I just like the whole 'Harry Potter' vibe — about a kid becoming a magician, going to wizarding school. I think the movies and the books, everything I've seen, is really cool. I definitely like Harry, because he's the underdog. He's always getting picked on. He's always down and out, but he just comes back, and I think that's cool. And it's pissed off a bunch of Christian people, and that made it even better for me."

Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the "Harry Potter" films): "I think the great thing about 'Harry Potter' is that J.K. Rowling has created a myth for our time. I know it sounds cliché, but to keep reinventing the dynamic between good and evil in an accessible and dramatic way is fantastic. I think the high-octane drama of those movies is great for keeping filmmaking alive. There's an energy and an inventiveness and an originality to what she's done."

Shirley Manson: "I have two connections with 'Harry Potter.' One is that J.K. Rowling came from my city, Edinburgh. But more importantly, my dog, my rescue dog, is named after a character, a kind of being, in 'Harry Potter': Veela."

Marcia Gay Harden: "[My 10-year-old daughter] Eulala has read all seven books, and this past year, she asked me to read them with her, because her whole world is 'Harry Potter.' For her birthday, she wants a wand, a crystal ball, a potion-making kit, that's all she wants — not any 'Hannah Montana.' So I read it, and it's brilliant. Each chapter, J.K. Rowling leaves a breadcrumb, and you have to read on. You can't stop! It's affected our lives on so many levels, from reading together to playtime — a lot of playtime is about 'Harry Potter' — to other books and wondering if the writing will be as good or the imagery as great. Rowling says, 'Jump on and go on this ride,' and it's fantastic. I would have loved to be Professor McGonagall. Eulala is Hermione. It's another way of looking at the world, which I really love."

Autumn Reeser ("American Mall"): "I had a 'Harry Potter' lunchbox — I kept art supplies in it. The kids who I went to elementary school with would say I'm a Hermione. I was a little bit of a know-it-all. I just liked school, which isn't always cool. I discovered that in junior high. But I think 'Harry Potter' reminds me of my childhood, of that fantastical time childhood is. I would have liked to go to Hogwarts. I would have had wizard parties. There is actually a whole book on how to throw wizard parties, and I considered doing that, you know, making food that looks like funny things like frogs. Your guests come as wizards. I would probably have to invite 10-year-olds and not my actual friends."

Verne Troyer: "I was actually in the first 'Harry Potter' film, and it was fun, but the only thing was, I had to go through over five hours of makeup. A new 'Harry Potter' film is going to be coming out soon, and they have my character [Griphook] coming back, but they somehow didn't call me and have me be a part of it. What's up with that?"

An unnamed source told TMZ.com early Monday that AM is "ambulatory and in good spirits."

While Barker is best known as part of the punk-pop band Blink-182, his formidable drumming and production skills have earned him deep respect from the hip-hop community, thanks to his energetic beats on remixes of songs by Soulja Boy Tell'em and Flo Rida.

Speaking on Cincinnati urban radio station 101.1 the WIZ on Saturday night, Yung Berg paused to send out condolences to those killed in the crash and best wishes and prayers to Barker and AM. Fall Out Boy, Beanie Sigel, Lindsay Lohan and other celebrities have also sent out messages over the weekend.

The Game also weighed in, telling AllHipHop.com that he was "deeply hurt" by the news of the deadly crash. "Travis Barker has always been there for me when I needed him creatively. We've done many songs together," the Game said. "Just recently he appeared in my video ['Dope Boyz'] that he featured on. I respect and love him. My prayers are with him and his family in this difficult time for his speedy and complete recovery."

Barker is also close with rapper Paul Wall, with whom he formed an all-star group called Expensive Taste. "It's so shocking and unexpected. Travis and AM are such generous people. They would literally give you the shirt off their back," Wall told AllHipHop. The rapper also commented on Chris Baker, one of four people killed in the crash, saying, "And Lil Chris was such a great friend. He was down for life. I feel so bad for his wife and son that are going through such a hard time right now. Family is something very important to Travis and Chris. We all gotta pull together right now."

As of Sunday, AM and Barker were still in critical but stable condition after the crash, which officials say may have been caused by a blown tire. Doctors said that they suffered second- and third-degree burns but are expected to recover fully. Barker sustained burns on his torso and lower body, and AM was burned on his arm and head. An official at the hospital said that neither sustained any other physical injuries, but they could be hospitalized for weeks.

"Anybody who can survive a plane crash is pretty lucky," Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Still Burn Center told reporters during a news conference Sunday morning.
Killed in the crash were pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31; co-pilot James Bland, 52; Barker's assistant and close friend Chris "Little Chris" Baker, 29; and security guard Charles Still, 25.

In addition to friends and family, The Associated Press reported that several fans visited the hospital over the weekend. "I was just shocked when I first heard it, and I knew that I had to do something," said Ryan Meadows, a 19-year-old college student from Augusta.

A statement from the families of both artists thanked fans and friends for their support. "The families wish to thank fans from all over the world for their prayers and concern," the statement read. "Deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones of those who perished in the crash."

Beyoncé's planned concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been canned amid protests by local Muslim groups, Billboard reports. The groups are reportedly upset that the singer has refused to obey the country's strict dress code for performers, although the November 1 concert's promoter, Pineapple Concert, did not give a reason for the cancellation in a statement issued Friday (September 28). Female performers are not allowed to show skin from the tops of their chests to their knees. In August, Gwen Stefani's concert in the country was also preceded by protests for the same reason — but she reluctantly abided by the guidelines, saying in a press conference before the show that she had made a "major sacrifice." ...

Ludacris, Yung Joc, Angels & Airwaves, Fabolous, Keyshia Cole, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Busta Rhymes will hit the stage October 6 at Radio City Music Hall in New York for the Boost Mobile RockCorps volunteer show, to be hosted by Nick Cannon. The concert will act as a reward to 5,000 Big Apple volunteers who have carried out at least four hours of service in their community. Earlier in the day, Luda, along with pro skateboarder Terry Kennedy and snowboarder Keir Dillon, will join 100 NYC volunteers to revitalize Manhattan's DeWitt Clinton Park. ...

R. Kelly's child-pornography trial, which was to have started September 17 in Chicago, doesn't have a new start date in sight. In a status hearing on Friday, the only thing that was determined, according to the state's attorney's office, is the next status hearing date, for November 2. ... Owen Wilson is "doing really well," Ben Stiller told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show on Friday. "I sort of like to protect his privacy, 'cause I feel like it's his own thing. But he's a really good friend of mine. He's an incredible guy, and I wish him as everybody does, all the best." The two actors were due to begin shooting "Tropic Thunder" this month, but Wilson dropped out of the flick following a suicide attempt in late August.

With Jamie Foxx's "The Kingdom," a flick about a series of terrorist bombings in the Mideast, hitting theaters this weekend, it seems it was only a matter of time before the outspoken actor piped up with his views about U.S. intervention abroad. While promoting the film, he told MSNBC that he doesn't see an end in sight to the Iraq war — and that President Bush's big problem is that he lacks "charisma." "It's not the way America has handled the war, it's the way George Bush has handled it," the actor said. "I think George Bush and the guys that are there just don't have the charisma to pull off the things that they're trying to do. I can understand if you want to go to war, but how do you go to war? They go to war in a high-risk, high-return or high-risk, no-return ... situation. You'll be in Iraq for another 30 years. You can't get out."

Mariah Carey got a win in court last week when a federal judge decided that a copyright-infringement case against her had no merit. Singer Rachele Chafir had sued Carey in April 2006, claiming that Carey's hit "It's Like That" was copied from her song "Sexy" and lifted key pieces, including the music, for the chorus. Chafir, who copyrighted the song in 2004, claimed Carey had access to "Sexy" since it was available on a Web site, but U.S. District Court Judge Kimba Wood decided that wasn't proof Carey or her collaborators had gone to the Web site or lifted the material, which wasn't "strikingly similar" enough to be considered infringement. With "no genuine issues of material fact," Wood closed the case. "It was the right decision," Carey's lawyer Ilene Farkas told MTV News. "The record was clear in this case." Meanwhile, Carey is moving on with her yet-untitled follow-up to The Emancipation of Mimi, which her record label confirmed is now due December 4. ...

Baseball star Barry Bonds' record-breaking home-run ball, which was purchased two weeks ago in an online auction by hip-hop fashion mogul Marc Ecko, will be heading to the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum after all. Ecko bought the ball and launched a Web site giving fans the chance to vote on the ball's final destination: outer space or to Cooperstown, with or without an asterisk signifying Bonds' alleged steroid use in helping him become the all-time home-run king.

The twisted saga of the investigation into the unsolved 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. took another turn this week when Waymond Anderson, an inmate serving life for murder, recanted testimony in which he had implicated the Los Angeles Police Department in the rapper's murder. The Los Angeles Times reports that Anderson said in a recent deposition that he lied about LAPD involvement as part of a "scam" cooked up with two other convicts to get a big monetary settlement from the city of Los Angeles. Most shockingly, Anderson accused the rapper's family — which has filed a wrongful-death suit seeking damages from the city — and its lawyer of taking part in the scheme and offering to pay him a percentage of the settlement for false testimony against the LAPD. In the August 20 testimony, Anderson said he had never met the officers he implicated, despite earlier statements in which he described conversations with the two disgraced ex-LAPD cops. A lawyer for Biggie's family, Perry Sanders, called Anderson's allegations "100 percent, demonstrably false," adding yet another twist to the already-knotted-up story by saying that Anderson appeared to be changing his story at the behest of Chuck Philips, a Times reporter who has written extensively about the murder investigation and has questioned the theory of LAPD involvement. Phillips and the Times dismissed the allegations. ...

In other Biggie news, the recently released documentary "The Notorious B.I.G.: Bigger Than Life" follows the rapper's life from his early days to his death with interviews from many of the behind-the-scenes music-industry figures and friends who watched the rapper rise from a street-corner hustler to one of the biggest rap stars in the world. The film also features several minutes of previously unreleased footage shot by a bystander of the scene on the night Biggie was gunned down. The fan's video — which director Peter Spirer ("Beef," "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel") said has been reviewed by authorities — doesn't capture the moment Biggie's car was shot at, but it does have audio of the shots and shaky footage of the chaotic aftermath. ...

Embattled football player Michael Vick is facing stricter release conditions after testing positive for marijuana earlier this month, The Associated Press reports. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson imposed the new conditions, which include restricting Vick to his home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. with electronic monitoring and making him submit to random drug tests. He was ordered to continue participating in substance-abuse and mental-health counseling. Vick was put under pretrial release supervision in July, and the restrictions included refraining from the use of narcotic drugs or other controlled substances. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback, who pleaded guilty in August to federal dogfighting charges, is awaiting sentencing December 10 — and Vick's violation of the conditions of his release could be taken into consideration by the judge.

Back in January, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz was practically bursting out of his hoodie with excitement about Kanye West's upcoming remix of his band's "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race."

Of course, ever since he broke the news about the collabo (see "Fall Out Boy Hope To Rush Kanye Remix Onto Upcoming Album"), that excitement has tapered off a bit. There was no grand unveiling of the remix, rather it just sorta "debuted" on FriendsOrEnemies.com in February, and then ... well, nothing, really.

But fast-forward to last week, when out of nowhere, 'Ye's remix of "Arms Race" popped up again on FOE, this time complete with brand-new verses from Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy, Paul Wall and Tyga, a recent signee to Wentz's Decaydance Records. And all of a sudden, it sort of made sense that the track disappeared for roughly six months ... FOB were busy contacting basically every MC they knew to appear on the remix of the remix.

"Some of this took forever and some of it happened overnight," Wentz told MTV News. "Kanye did his [verse] so fast and I think Lil Wayne has the fastest turnaround of any rapper in the studio. We met Lupe when he played during our set at our Chicago show. And Paul we met on [the Honda Civic Tour], obviously.

"Kanye did his verse and we e-mailed back and forth, Tyga and Trav did their verses together, Paul did it in the bus on tour. And Wayne may have done it in his backyard, it happened so fast," Wentz continued. "We ended up with a bunch of verses that didn't make it on, 'cause we didn't want it to be overkill. So somewhere out there exists another version with a couple of alternate dudes."

And — somewhat surprisingly — this version of "Arms Race" still contains West's original verses, which poked fun at FOB's penchant for tight pants and basically called them out for talking smack about the scene that birthed them. In February, more than a few of the band's fans said they thought the verses were a tad disrespectful, but Wentz sees it differently. If you're gonna be clowned upon, he supposes, you might as well be clowned upon by the best.

"As far as Kanye messing with us, I think it comes with the territory," he said. "We are under no pretense that we are 'down' or 'cool.' We're geeks. Besides, it feels good to get caught in [Kanye's] scope ... even if only because it means you showed up in it."

And now that the new-and-improved "Arms Race" remix is out there, does Wentz have any larger plans for it? Well, if it were up to him, he'd like to keep it street. But he's gonna have to defer to Mr. West on this one ...

"I don't know, a lot of it is in Kanye's hands, and he is pretty much working on his new record all the time," Wentz said. "I think it's just gonna be a mixtape. ... But I'm honestly not sure how mixtapes work."

Fall Out Boy's headlining stint on this year's Honda Civic Tour had a rough beginning last month. In fact, the trek didn't start at all. In April, two weeks before they were slated to hit the road, FOB announced that the 43-city North American run would be delayed a month due to "health concerns."

Now the tour is finally under way — it began Friday in Denver (see "Pete Wentz On Fall Out Boy Tour Delay: 'It's A Health Issue, But Nothing Serious' "). But at the kickoff, it was another artist on the bill who was drawing a lot of the attention: Paul Wall.

The People's Champ is the only hip-hop artist on a bill that also features (+44), the Academy Is ... and Cobra Starship. Other than a few short promotional club jaunts he's endured, the Honda Civic Tour is Wall's first-ever large-scale tour.

"I'm real excited, man. I couldn't wait to hit the road," Paul Wall told MTV News, hanging out on his tour bus in Denver. "I got nervous when it got pushed back because I was really anxious to get onstage. But I was kinda happy too, because the first date of the tour was [supposed to be] my son's first birthday. I told my wife, 'He's gonna be on the tour bus with Fall Out Boy and (+44) and all these great bands — it's gonna be the greatest birthday party ever!' She was a little upset. But it's all good now."

(Watch Paul Wall chill backstage with Fall Out Boy and (+44), get his take on one-size-fits-all grills and more, right here.)

As a matter of fact, Fall Out Boy personally invited Paul Wall on the tour. "We were playing a radio-station festival and he was on the bill," FOB singer Patrick Stump explained backstage. "He was easily the heaviest-sounding of all the artists that performed that day, even the rock artists. So when it came time to put together this tour, we knew it would fit."

(+44)'s Mark Hoppus is also a big fan of the Houston rapper. "He's just a good friend and a positive guy," he said. "Being on tour can get grinding and long, and you can get homesick. Paul's the kind of guy that's just going to be in a great mood all the time. Every time I see him, he's always got a smile on his face. ... It's going to be good to be around that kind of energy — he's the People's Champ."

The same could be said of Fall Out Boy, who are eager to play songs from their recent album, Infinity on High, to packed houses for the next seven weeks (see "Fall Out Boy Take It To The Top, Score First Billboard #1").

"It's our biggest show ever," Pete Wentz said, in between goofing off with a basketball and the MTV microphone. "I'm usually not very OCD about a lot of things that go on with our band, but with mapping out this show, I was. I think there's a lot of directions we could've gone in and we decided to go in the direction of the biggest 'rock' show we could do."

Wentz wouldn't give up many details about what FOB have in store but did admit that they've been dabbling with a cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It." He also said some cities might witness a surprise side-stage all-star mash-up featuring all the artists on the bill.

"We've been working really hard to make this show look and sound the best it's ever been for Fall Out Boy," Stump added. "There's so many things going on with this show and so much could go wrong — it is a Fall Out Boy show, after all. But if even two of these things go right on any night, it'll be a really entertaining show."
