Memorial Day was established to honor Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War. But the holiday isn't too civil to record stores, pretty much stymieing anything of interest from hitting the racks.

OK, that's a little harsh. There are some records you might care about as you recover from the long weekend:

Peeping Tom's self-titled record is classic Mike Patton. The Tomahawk/ Fantômas/ Lovage mastermind overextends himself yet again with this long-in-the-works project, which slipped out a much-prized bootleg demo years ago but hasn't made a peep since. Yanking the unconventional pop group out of obscurity is Norah Jones, who graces the second-to-last track, "Sucker." Patton's typically unpredictable guest list also includes Massive Attack, Bebel Gilberto, Dan the Automator, Kool Keith, Amon Tobin, Kid Koala and Dub Trio, who put out an album of their own last week. If you're looking for Patton product that isn't alienating, this is it.

Death Becomes Them: Just in case you didn't hear them screaming their faces off the first time around, Thine Eyes Bleed are reservicing their debut LP, In the Wake of Separation, in time for their tour in support of Slayer (TEB's bassist is the brother of Slayer's Tom Araya). The refreshed version has the bonus cut "Better Off Dead," which was only available in Japan, and the video for "Cold Victim." And Florida death-metal vets Morbid Angel — who are heavily influenced by Slayer — are reaching back even further with the re-release of 1989's Altars of Madness, which comes with three remix tracks and a bonus DVD featuring the band's gig at the U.K.'s Nottingham Rock City in '89.

Victory Scores: One label isn't getting much rest this weekend: punk imprint Victory Records. Its so-called "Super Tuesday" marks the arrival of In the Shadow of Two Gunmen, the second effort by pop duo the Forecast; Questions and Answers, the second one by angsty New Yorkers the Sleeping; 18 Candles: The Early Years, which packs in 18 retrospective tracks — including concert cuts and remixes — by Canadian post-hardcore act Silverstein; and The Great Compromise, a colorful record by cheerleading three-piece the Junior Varsity that features "Left Foot Right Foot," "Peter Cottontail and the Demise of the Carrot Tree" and more.

Don't Forget to Preorder: In case you haven't learned your lesson, here are two more reasons to plan ahead: preorders of Minutes to Miles by New Jersey newcomers Crash Romeo came with limited-edition tees, while early copies of Terror's three-hour "The Living Proof" DVD was bundled with a stencil and poster.

That's So Yesterday: It's like 1981 all over again this week, what with the 25th anniversary of psych-experimentalists Legendary Pink Dots. Their Your Children Placate You From Premature Graves follows up 2004's The Whispering Wall and includes "Stigmata (Part 4)" and "The Made Man's Manifesto." Celtic Frost have an equally impressive milestone with Monotheist, the hugely influential metal band's first record in 13 years.

'80s Hits Stripped culls acoustic tracks by Billy Idol, Rick Springfield, the Go-Go's and other yesteryear greats, and the label's so jazzed for the release that it's throwing a party at Johnny Depp's Viper Room on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Blasters honcho Dave Alvin recaps John Fogerty, Jerry Garcia, Brian Wilson and other Left Coasters on West of the West, while blues-rocker George Thorogood and the Destroyers run through tunes by Bob Dylan, Fats Domino and more on The Hard Stuff. And if you're a Motörhead fan, you'll no doubt recognize the cover of "Killed by Death" that appears as a bonus cut on the debut LP by all-female Swedish quartet Crucified Barbara, who have already made waves back home.

You've definitely heard the Von Bondies' "C'mon C'mon" by now; the title track to "Rescue Me" kicks off the show's soundtrack, which also features Wolf Parade, the Brian Jonestown Massacre and other decidedly noncommercial acts. And if you're an ardent Zero 7 fan, you've probably already heard Sophie Barker's Earthbound, which dropped in the U.K. last year but is finally getting a U.S. release. And Finnish psychedelic minimalists Kiila issued their Heartcore five years ago in other territories, but it's finally dropping Stateside this week.

Chatham County Line — a rootsy project out of Raleigh, North Carolina, that incorporates fiddle, banjo and more — are churning out their third effort, the playfully titled Speed of the Whippoorwill. Singer/guitarist Dave Wilson says the bandmembers "see ourselves more like a rock band without a drummer and cables than a 1940s traditional bluegrass band." But debuting Chicago sextet the 1900s are more than happy to be lodged in the last century. The band's Plume Delivery EP calls to mind the New Pornographers and the Kinks and boasts "Bring the Good Boys Home" and "Flight of the Monowings."

If you want something really archaic, look no further than Wes Montgomery's "Live in Europe 1965," a DVD that captures the famed jazz guitarist in his prime. And while we're on the subject of age, let's give it up for Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass immortal who is putting out A Distant Land to Roam: Songs of the Carter Family at the tender age of 79.

Song Title of the Week:

"Don't Forget to Set the House on Fire Before You Crawl into Bed" from Junior Varsity's The Great Compromise

Other Notables:

Les Claypool's Of Whales and Woe: The Primus bass whiz has been busier than ever with a new feature film ("Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo"), novel and everlasting tour. His latest solo outing includes "Robot Chicken," the theme to the cartoon show of the same name; "Back Off Turkey," which showcases his two kids banging on various objects; and "Iowan Gal," a paean to Claypool's wife.

Quietdrive's When All That's Left Is You: These Minneapolis rockers have "buzz" written all over them, what with a red-hot MySpace page and raves from The Los Angeles Times. They get an additional boost from Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker and heralded mixer Chris Lord-Alge on the LP, which features "Rise From the Ashes," "Take a Drink With Me" and "Maybe Misery."

Asobi Seksu's Citrus: Their name means "playful sex" in Japanese and they've topped mtvU's Dean's List, and if you're in the mood to dream, Asobi Seksu have your number. The group's bilingual, keyboard-laced sophomore disc includes "Pink Cloud Tracing Paper" and "Nefi+Girly" and will fit in comfortably next to your Lush and My Bloody Valentine CDs.

Even the most avid Von Bondies fans found it difficult to sing along with the band on its summer tour.

"Almost all our set is new songs," frontman Jason Stollsteimer said. "So we see a whole audience of people staring at us going, 'When are they gonna play "C'mon, C'mon?" ' "

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for fans, however, as those new songs are scheduled to be recorded this fall for the follow-up to 2004's Pawn Shoppe Heart. The Bondies have already written 15 new songs and are still going strong.

"The first two records, especially the last [one], was written mainly on the road," drummer Don Blum said backstage at the San Diego Street Scene festival in late July. "But this new record, we came off of our tour in January and we all started working in a practice space, so it was kind of more focused on songwriting."

This approach has made for a process that is more collaborative on the whole.

"Don, now, is writing songs," Stollsteimer said. "He's never written songs before and he's adding a whole new aspect. I mean drummers are based around getting kids dancing, where I more worry about lyrics. So we're putting it together and writing more melodies for kids to sing along with."

Stollsteimer is, of course, writing too, directing several of his songs at young people. "I'm actually going back to when I was like 20 years old and realizing that I seriously thought I wasn't going to do anything with my life," he explained. "I'm trying to give kids the idea that there's something more [to life] than just turning 21 and [being able to] drink at a bar. It's very simple. It's not a revolution."

The Von Bondies have the songs ready for the most part — they just need to pick a producer and studio.

"We could record in Detroit, we could record anywhere," said Stollsteimer, who made headlines in 2003 for scuffling with fellow Motor City rocker Jack White (see "Jack White Pleads Guilty To Assault Charge, Must Take Anger-Management Class"). "To me, I'd like to get out. I live there year-round, so I don't want to be there when I'm recording a record, trying to get new ideas. I mean the truth is, if you don't have good songs, it doesn't matter where you record."

As for who will helm the album, the band has a few producers in mind but "if we say them now, they might not want to work with us," Stollsteimer said.

"We're trying to push ourselves more too, just to like try different things," Blum added.

"Singing in key, tuning — you know, the hard things," Stollsteimer joked.

Jack White Says Von Bondies Singer Exaggerated Bar Fight

He claims Jason Stollsteimer used the incident to help album sales.
By Jon Wiederhorn

The White Stripes' Jack White has written a batch of new songs and is making plans for other future releases, he revealed in a Q&A session Saturday on fan site www.whitestripes.net.

White also spoke candidly for the first time about his fight in December with Von Bondies frontman Jason Stollsteimer (see "Jack White Brawls With Fellow Garage Rocker At Detroit Club"), and he discussed the aftereffects of a finger injury he suffered in a car accident last year.

Regarding a new White Stripes album, the situation is anything but red, er ... black and white. "Me and Meg may record this summer, but not too much is definite," White wrote. "I must say though that the time off has made me very inspired to write."

Even if the White Stripes don't record a follow-up to Elephant anytime soon, there will be plenty of striped candy to go around. The band will assemble a B-sides disc and issue a widely bootlegged recording of its 2001 appearance on the English radio show "Peel Sessions." The White Stripes may also release live recordings from Detroit concerts and a CD of recordings they made for Italy Records in 1997 and 1998. Before year's end, the Stripes also plan to issue a DVD of live concert footage shot in Blackpool, England, the band revealed last week on its Web site.

Much of White's Q&A session focused on his bar fight with Stollsteimer. Once a major supporter of the Detroit garage rockers, White helped get the Von Bondies signed and produced their first record. For months, White held his tongue on the Stollsteimer issue, even after pleading guilty to assault in March (see "Jack White Pleads Guilty To Assault Charge, Must Take Anger-Management Class"), but now he's opened up, accusing Stollsteimer of milking the situation and exaggerating his injuries in order to receive publicity for his band's album Pawn Shoppe Heart.

"The entire event was completely exploited by him, his band, and his managers and legal professionals," White wrote. "The two of us did have an argument, and I did spit at him. But what he doesn't say is how he then grabbed me to pull me down and pulled out a good deal of my hair. My retaliation was to hit him to get him off of me. Then he landed on my hand, which became cut on the broken glass underneath it. The whole thing lasted less than 10 seconds."

White insists Stollsteimer wasn't badly injured and that he dramatized the situation in order to drag White "through the mud." He added that the incident followed two years of Stollsteimer badmouthing White to friends and the press and insisted that the photo of Stollsteimer's bruised and battered face, which was widely circulated to the media, didn't accurately illustrate his injuries.

"The photo was sent to the [British magazine] NME the next morning, with the photo credit being that of the Von Bondies' manager, Rick Canny," White wrote. "Jason would not allow the dried blood from his bloody nose washed from his face before taking the photo. Take a look at it again. It's a black eye once you wash the dried blood off. His face isn't full of cuts. The 'permanent damage' that he claims was done to his eye from this is also false. Having toured extensively with the man, I know that he would refuse to drive the touring van because as a teenager Jason left a contact lens in his eye for over a year and then tried to pull it out. He tore his eye in doing so ... the same eye he tried to blame me for permanently damaging. It's so funny that when the aroma of money and fame is in the air, old friends will quickly step on your face to get to it."

In addition to getting his side of the Stollsteimer scuffle off his chest, White revealed that he almost had a second surgery on the hand he injured in an accident last July (see "Stripes' Jack White Injures Finger In Car Accident"), but he decided not to undergo the procedure. As a result, the guitarist has been forced to significantly alter his playing style. "It has made playing a great deal more difficult," he wrote. "I had to relearn how to play chords with my other fingers, but in the end I think it's made me a better player, if not just a sorer one."

Jack White Brawls With Fellow Garage Rocker At Detroit Club

It looks like Jack White's broken finger has healed at least well enough to throw punches at other garage rockers.

The White Stripes frontman was involved in a brawl with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer Saturday night in Detroit's Magic Stick club, according to police reports.

Stollsteimer, who suffered a bloody nose and bruising to his right eye, was treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released. White sustained cuts to his left hand.

The Von Bondies singer told police that White had tried to speak with him in the club, which was hosting a record release party for alt-country rockers Blanche, and that when he refused, the Stripes frontman angrily threw him to the ground and punched him seven times in his right eye.

A press statement from the Von Bondies' management claims "Stollsteimer was violently attacked by Jack White of the White Stripes without warning or provocation." It continues: "White approached Stollsteimer during the concert, physically forcing him against the speakers, and began shouting. Stollsteimer attempted to turn his head [to] face White but refused to engage in conversation. Visibly angered by Stollsteimer's unwillingness to argue or fight, White spat into Stollsteimer's face and punched him in the head and face repeatedly. White then forced Stollsteimer to the ground and continued his attack until White was restrained by several crowd members."

The Von Bondies singer filed a complaint against White, who may be hit with misdemeanor assault charges. White later filed his own complaint, insisting he fought back in self-defense after Stollsteimer threw him to the floor and began choking him. White's publicist had no comment.

White played a major role in kick-starting the Von Bondies' career, including them on the Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit album he produced in 2001, inviting them to open for the White Stripes, and producing their 2001 record, Lack of Communication.

Previous reports of a bitter feud between White and Stollsteimer had been denied by the Von Bondies singer.
