The year may not be over yet, but People is already naming its Best and Worst Dressed celebrities of 2009. Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Vanessa Hudgens are among the women receiving kudos for their various contributions to the world of style.

Actress Kate Winslet is named the Best Red Carpet celeb. Reese Witherspoon earned the title of Best Short Dresses, while Cameron Diaz got Best Jeans, and the first lady received Best Accessible Glamour.

Hudgens is celebrated as Best Hippie Chic, and Swift, as evidenced by her fantastic VMA gown, is recognized for Best Sparkle.

Other ladies on top are "Slumdog Millionaire" star Freida Pinto for Best Use of Color; Nicole Richie, who gave birth to her second child earlier this month, for Best Maternity; Beyoncé for Best Street Chic and Kim Kardashian for Best Bikinis. Predictably, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are named the year's best fashion rebels.

"I'm inspired by '70s glam, decadence, skyscrapers, Madonna," Gaga told People, a statement she proved time and again at Sunday's VMAs.

Robert Pattinson, Brad Pitt and Bradley Cooper are among the guys noted for their dashing sense of style.

Of course, we're almost more curious about the fashion failures noted in the special double issue, which hits newsstands on Friday. Paula Abdul and Renée Zellweger made the Worst Dressed list for picking the wrong dresses to walk the red carpet in. "The Hills" star Heidi Montag is called out for her cut-out Herve Leger dress, which was also worn by Kristin Cavallari and Heather Graham. And, of course, Jessica Simpson and her infamous mom jeans are among the year's Most Memorable Style Moments.

After "High School Musical" and "Bandslam," Vanessa Hudgens had planned to leave musical movies behind to concentrate on darker fare like Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch." But the singer/actress caught the musical-biopic bug while filming her upcoming teen flick "Beastly."

So what musician does Hudgens want to bring to life on the big screen? "Janis Joplin," she told MTV News. "I don't know [why]. In 'Beastly,' there's a Halloween party, and it's kind of a high school Halloween party. All the girls are dressed up as sl--s, and my character comes in as Janis Joplin."

From that point on, Hudgens couldn't help but become a little obsessed with the legendary performer. "I would not stop listening to her music [after that], and I think she's so incredible," she said. "I know I don't look much like her, but you can always hope, right?"

Hudgens isn't the first person to pursue a Joplin biopic. Back in 2004, it was announced that Pink had signed on to "The Gospel According to Janis," a movie that director Penelope Spheeris has been developing for two decades. Another singer/actress, Zooey Deschanel, is now attached to the project, but she told MTV News in 2007 that the film was "on hold." "It's one of these things [that] seems like it's been hard to get all the money and the rights in place," Deschanel said.

Renée Zellweger was also signed on to play Joplin in a movie set to be titled "Piece of My Heart" or simply "Janis."

Vanessa Hudgens won the hearts of tweens everywhere as Gabriella in the "High School Musical" movies, and she's set to do it again this summer when her new film, "Bandslam," hits theaters. But these days Hudgens is taking a break from singing to focus solely on acting.

"It's great! I mean, I love musicals, I really do," she told MTV News on the set of her new (non-musical) film, "Beastly." "I grew up doing them, so it'll always have a place in my heart ... at the same time, it's nice to be able to separate the two and just be able to focus on films. It's a lot of fun playing different characters and taking on new journeys."

Focusing on these upcoming projects leaves little time for Hudgens to work on anything music related, even writing tracks for any upcoming albums. "Honestly, I'm kind of taking a break from music right now. I'm just focusing on films and acting. I feel like when I'm doing something I really want, [I] focus on that and try to not spread myself all over the place."

But just because she's not singing in the film doesn't mean that Hudgens has ruled out recording a song for the soundtrack. "I'm always up for anything musically," she said. "I think it's so much fun. Just as long as I'm not singing in the movie," she laughed, "then it's OK."

With all the "New Moon" casting rumors that have been floating around since "Twilight" hit theaters, we were especially wondering who would play werewolf Leah Clearwater, Jacob Black's feisty and heartbroken frienemy.

Well, one of the rumored actresses in the running — "High School Musical" starlet Vanessa Hudgens — has apparently taken the next step and auditioned for the role, according to "Twilight" actress Ashley Greene.

We ran into Alice herself at a Golden Globes afterparty, and she told us she'd be happy to co-star with Hudgens. "I think she'd be great," Greene enthused.

Just last week, we asked Twilighters on our Movies Blog what actress should play Leah, including Hudgens and "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" actress Brenda Song as two poll options. The actresses tied at 31 percent of your vote, with "neither" being the most popular choice at 38 percent.

Commenters had a lot to say about Hudgens' possible casting — both positive and negative.

"I cannot picture her being mean or aggressive as Leah," Mary_ym commented about the Disney star.

"Vanessa Hudgens would be a good choice," chill_kid_07 countered. " ... Of course she can't look like Leah — no one can. You know why? 'Cause it's just a book, and these are actors trying to portray the roles! I think she would be great."

Besides casting, Greene also had some news on the status of "New Moon."

"I hear they're doing another rewrite," the actress revealed of the in-flux script. "I'm with you guys — I'm so excited to read it."

A decade ago, the Spice Girls championed "girl power," and in 2008 a slew of talented young ladies seemed to take that message to heart. From Miley and Demi to Dakota and Kristen, teen girls ruled the charts as well as the big and small screens. Here, we look back at the young women who made this the year of the teen queens.

In 2008, Miley survived the controversies of a couple of photo shoots; turned 16 and threw herself a huge bash; found love with an underwear model; and managed to do it all while acting in a few hit movies, getting nominated for a VMA and a Golden Globe, starring in a successful TV show and putting out a hit album.

Taylor Swift
She came on the scene singing about a boy named Drew in her VMA-nominated song "Teardrops on My Guitar," and she finished the year releasing a million-plus-selling record, Fearless, and singing about a more famous ex-love interest, Joe Jonas. The 19-year-old doesn't like being called a crossover artist, but she has definitely crossed over from being an up-and-coming country singer to a full-fledged pop star who isn't afraid to share her feelings about the guys she's dated. Maybe in 2009 she can finally make that hip-hop collaboration happen.

They may play frenemies in a trio of wildly popular Disney movies, but thanks to the success of the third installment of "High School Musical," both Hudgens and Tisdale are willing to let bygones be bygones as they graduate from their onscreen personas, Gabriella and Sharpay. These two have also managed to find time to have careers in music and shoot non-"HSM" movies set for release in 2009.

"Camp Rock" introduced everyone to Demi Lovato, who somehow managed to go from being "the next Miley Cyrus" to being the one and only Demi in just a few months. Her album, Don't Forget, made a splash on the charts, debuting at #2, and she got to work on her upcoming Disney Channel sitcom, "Sonny With a Chance," set to air in 2009. She also hooked up with fellow teen queen Selena Gomez for the movie "Princess Protection Program," but she swears she's never kissed a Jonas Brother. Miley who?

She plays a wizard on the Disney Channel, and for this 16-year-old, 2008 was magic. Selena talked about starting a band, and then she stirred the pot when she accidentally revealed to MTV News plans for a "Wizards of Waverly Place" movie. She made a cameo in the Jonas Brothers video for "Burnin' Up" and then reportedly found time to date the youngest JoBro, Nick. On top of all that, Selena and BFF Demi fended off rumors of a feud with Miley.

Dakota Fanning
Dakota Fanning has grown up right before our eyes. Now the Jodie Foster-approved actress is seamlessly making the transition from kid star to grown-up thespian. Despite some controversy for her role in "Hounddog," Fanning made her way back on the scene in "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Winged Creatures." The latter co-stars Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who can't stop singing the actress' praises. Miranda Cosgrove
She may not have had the chops to join the band in 2003's "School of Rock," but she somehow managed to find her voice on Nickelodeon, singing the theme to her hit show "iCarly." On the program, Cosgrove's character has her own successful Web show, and like so many performers of her generation, Cosgrove spent part of 2008 working on an album, poising herself to jump on the singing-actress bandwagon.

Emma Roberts
You may know her dad, Eric, or her Aunt Julia, but Emma is out to make it on her own. She's had her own "Unfabulous" TV show, and she played Nancy Drew on the big screen. In 2008, she was busy shooting movies, so her hard work should pay off next year, when we'll see her in "The Winning Season" and "Hotel for Dogs."

Playing "Twilight" heroine Bella has put this indie-film star on the map. She's become a hero to young girls everywhere with her quiet onscreen persona. And her real-life relaxed attitude is landing Stewart in some big roles for 2009: She's been tapped to play rocker Joan Jett in the Runaways biopic, and of course, she and Robert Pattinson will be heating up theaters again in the "Twilight" sequel, "New Moon," on November 20.

The singer was nominated for a VMA for her track "No Air" (with Chris Brown), and she placed herself right in the middle of the Russell-Brand-versus-Jonas-Brothers purity-rings scandal of 2008 by declaring her abstinence in the middle of the live broadcast. "No Air" earned a Grammy nod too, so we may get a chance to see the "American Idol" winner's feisty side onstage come February.

It should be an easy transition for the stars of "High School Musical" to go from singing and dancing on the big screen to pop stardom.

Since arriving on the scene a few years back, three of the castmembers have released their own albums and found middling success in the music industry. Although they play seniors in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu all have a case of sophomore-itis when it comes to their music careers.

Tisdale — who released her debut album, Headstrong, back in February — is hard at work on her next LP. "I'm actually recording my second album now," she told MTV News. "So I've just been recording and co-writing. The single should be coming out soon, but I feel it's pretty much 80 percent done. And, yeah, I'm excited about it. It's a lot more rock and edgier."

Hudgens is also embracing the edgier side of pop music. On her album, Identified, which she released this past summer, she hoped to spread her musical wings a bit. "I just released my second album, which was a lot of fun, 'cause I got to play with my sound," she said. "And it was just interesting to kind of grow up for the second album."

"I am also working on my second album in the studio," Bleu revealed. Although he shared little info about the project, he did say he was "writing, working with some good people like Eric Hudson and Brian Kennedy."

While three of the "HSM" stars are working on and releasing albums, Zac Efron has never pursued music outside of his songs in "HSM" — and with a bunch of movies on his plate, it's safe to say he might be too busy to hit up the studio anytime soon.

Monique Coleman also has no illusions of musical grandeur. "Oh no, I don't have any particular singing aspirations," she said. "It's exciting to be in this movie, because it has inspired so many kids to get out there and promote music."

And don't count out the new kids — one member of the new class, Justin Martin, is already planning his foray into the music industry. "I'm actually working on it right now," he said of his upcoming album. "So that'd be amazing to have someone like Lil Wayne on it. I'm also working with a couple of different record labels and a lot of different producers. My music is R&B, hip-hop, kind of pop-crossover."

At the ripe old age of 19, Vanessa Hudgens is on the verge of becoming a Hollywood superstar. She and Zac Efron are the Disney power couple, and now that she's leaving her role as Gabriella Montez behind, Hudgens is also poised to leave the "High School Musical" franchise in the dust.

"I came into this project at 16 years old and just eager to work," she told MTV News. "I had so much fun, and I was so passionate about acting, singing and dancing."

Up next for Hudgens is another high school film, "Bandslam," which Hudgens insists is nothing like "HSM." "It's a little bit more rock and roll," she said. "I get to play a character who's very different. She's a lot darker and more deadpan. She comes out in the end with a Flying V [Gibson guitar], and she gets to have her fun."

But right now, Hudgens is excited to have the well-loved "High School Musical" franchise finally coming to a theater near you, after two made-for-TV films. "The fact that we finally get to take it to the big screen is really exciting," she said. "We finally have the chance to create something bigger and better."

Hudgens didn't have the opportunity to attend a real high school. She was too busy working in Hollywood to deal with the daily grind of lockers, gym class and all the awkward moments that most normal teens go through. So working on "HSM" offered the chance to see what it would be like to be a normal teen, albeit with lots of musical numbers.

"I was actually homeschooled. [So working on 'HSM,'] I got to have my fantasy prom and got to wear a cap and gown for the first time and graduate with people I love — the cast — so it's been amazing," she said. "It's been this journey."

And on that journey, she met her boyfriend. When most teens are learning about the birds and the bees in front of their classmates, Efron and Hudgens did it in front of the paparazzi — but that doesn't mean she's ruled out working with Efron again.

"We have the most amazing time," she said. "I think with the entire cast, as well. We are all so close. I think we'd like to keep that door open to do another project together."

Some people are born into money, some luck into it, and then there's Miley Cyrus. According to the new issue of People magazine, the "Hannah Montana" star — who recently was the subject of a racy-photo scandal — is on track to rack up $1 billion in "Montana"-related sales during the 2007-08 fiscal year, putting her at the top of the heap of teen superstars earning adult-style wages.

But despite the $17.5 million she's expected to rake in from her sold-out tours (an estimated $1 million a week from the $50 million in tour grosses), the $65 million her concert movie brought in and a seven-figure book deal for her memoir, the 15-year-old — who topped the teens two weeks ago on Parade magazine's "What People Earn" list — isn't likely to go on a shopping spree anytime soon.

Her mother told the magazine that much of the earnings go to an investment fund the singer/actress can't touch until she turns 18. "At the end of the day, she doesn't have much left," Tish Cyrus said of her daughter's walking-around money. One thing Miley does have her eye on? A vintage Corvette once she's old enough to drive. For now, though, she collects old-school Electra bicycles.

Other kids on the list splurged more, like the Jonas Brothers, who used some of the $12 million haul from their tour with Cyrus, album sales, merchandise and appearances to buy new computers and a diamond-encrusted Chopard watch for their mom. Brother Nick, 15, also has a passion for shoes, dropping $1,550 on a pair by John Lobb, though the brothers do give 10 percent of their earnings to his charity, the Change for the Children Foundation. Some stars are on a tighter leash, like Oscar-nominated "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin, 12, who gets a weekly $11 allowance, despite pulling down an estimated $2 million a movie. What does she spend her money on? American Girl dolls and, of course, Jonas Brothers CDs.

Things aren't quite as tight for "Ugly Betty" star Mark Indelicato, 13, who gets a whopping $50 a week to spend on computer games and clothes (and Kiehl's and Clarins skin-care products to avoid breakouts), a drop in the bucket compared to his estimated $460,000 annual salary on the hit show.

Other moneymaking teens on the list include "Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones, 14, and "Everybody Hates Chris" star Tyler James Williams, 15, who both bank an estimated $1.2 million per season on their hit sitcoms. Precocious "War of the Worlds" star Dakota Fanning, 14, can get as much as $4 million for her big studio pictures, but does not get an allowance at all because, as she told Barbara Walters, "My [parents] want me to [help] because I want to."

Some graduates of the teen machine aren't doing too bad, either. According to the magazine, the three "Harry Potter" series stars are rolling in dough, with headliner Daniel Radcliffe, 18, expected to earn $50 million from the final three films, and Emma Watson, 18, and Rupert Grint, 19, each getting $4 million per "Potter" film. "High School Musical" has been good to Vanessa Hudgens, 19, and Zac Efron, 20. Hudgens banked $2 million in 2006, in addition to securing a number of major endorsement deals, and Efron was paid $3 million for the third "HSM" movie.

Then there are the kids who were born into it, like Microsoft founder Bill Gates' three tykes, 12-year-old Jennifer, 8-year-old Rory and 5-year-old Phoebe, who are the heirs to a reported $58 billion fortune, and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' teenage son Jett and his two older siblings, who will share their dad's $3.9 billion empire.

Everyone's back. All six stars of "High School Musical" will be onboard for the first big-screen adventure for the Disney Channel juggernaut. That means Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman will suit up for "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," slated for release on October 24.

Filming will begin in the spring with the series' director, Kenny Ortega, who told People magazine that he's excited to be working one last time with the cast, who were all virtually unknown before the first "HSM" debuted on the Disney Channel in January 2006. The movie went on to be the highest-rated program in the channel's history, and the soundtrack to its first sequel was the second-best-selling album of 2007.

"I am the luckiest guy in the world and I know it," Ortega said. "This will be our last time together, and I love working with these kids so much. It's going to be great."

The third installment will find high school seniors Troy (Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens) dealing with the prospect of being separated as they head to different colleges. And, as usual, they will join the rest of the Wildcat gang to stage an elaborate musical to deal with it.

Budding pop singer Tisdale, who will, of course, be back in the role of jealous diva Sharpay Evans, told People she's also psyched about one more go-round at East High.

"I'm excited," she said. "But it's going to be sad. It seems like it will be graduation, and I'll be crying while we're filming."

Nearly four months after a nude photo of "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens hit the Internet, the 19-year-old actress has issued fans another mea culpa ... well, sort of.

In the latest issue of Seventeen magazine, Hudgens said she's not sorry for taking the risqué picture, which she repeatedly called "private," but sorry instead for getting caught.

"It's very unfortunate, because with the Internet these days, you don't have a personal life," she told the magazine for its February cover story. "Nothing is private: Everyone knows everything, and they can find out everything about you. You're not as safe as you think you are, and you have to be aware of the people you're around. It was something that was meant to be private, and even though it isn't anymore, I'd still like to keep it as private as I can."

Hudgens' remarks to the magazine somewhat contradict an earlier statement issued days after the leak by her management, in which she apologized to her fans and said she felt embarrassment and "regret [at] having ever taken these photos."

Although she recently admitted to Seventeen that the incident was "traumatic" and made her "extremely upset," she said she's "much better now" thanks in large part to her "family, friends, and fans, who supported me all along the way."

Specifically, she singled out her mother to the magazine as particularly supportive.

"I was just open with her, and she was just so cute. She was like, 'Well, everyone can be naked if they want to,' " Hudgens told Seventeen. "My parents are very supportive of me. And they know I'm a teenager, and yes, kids do stupid things sometimes."

According to the article, Hudgens found out about the photo leak while out of the country. She claims the distance made her better equipped to deal with the resulting fallout.

"I found out from my manager," she revealed. "We heard some story was going to break in the tabloids, and I was like, 'What?!?' A few days later, the picture came out while I was on vacation in Australia. Thank God I wasn't home. It would have sucked if I was at home. So I got to be away from L.A. for about a millisecond. But when I came back, it got kind of crazy.

"I hope all my fans can learn from my mistake and make smart decisions," she concluded.
