Bowler caps, bow ties, corsets, crystals, "boobie thingies" — no, these are not the remnants of last weekend's Halloween rave but rather the accoutrements returning host
Katy Perry flounced around in at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. Together with the theme "Katy Kat Club," the Sally Bowles-inspired garb was only appropriate as the 16th annual EMAs returned to its inaugural location of Berlin, just days before the 20th anniversary of when the Berlin wall came tumbling down.

Jay-Z,
Beyoncé, U2, Tokio Hotel, Leona Lewis, David Hasselhoff, Juliette Lewis, Shakira, the Jonas Brothers and Tokio Hotel were just some of the stars that turned up on the red carpet to commence the largest awards show in MTV Europe's history. A staggering 17,000 audience members congregated at Berlin's O2 Arena and Brandenburg Gate, while an estimated 2 billion people tuned in from home.

It was a night contrasted by both the old and new, bad jokes on the German language and crackling political overtones. Veteran act Green Day opened up the show with a blistering two-song performance that had lead singer Billie Joe pogoing his way through the crowd and ending in shooting flames and fireworks as "Minority" slowed to its last four-note chord. (Proving why the group was once synonymous with teenage angst, Joe later returned to the stage after winning for Best Rock with these wise words: "Great that we got the best co-- band — I mean, rock band. Pardon my German.")

A slithering and glittering Katy Perry then took the stage, bellowing out "Herzlich wilkommen meine damen und herren!" and performed a raw-vocal medley that included the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face." Curiously, Perry then ribbed Lady Gaga later during the show when she emerged from a set design involving a giant ruby-red shoe. "They say that if a guy has big shoes, then he has ... the funny thing is, I think this belongs to Lady Gaga!"

The first award of the night went to U2 for Best Live Act. Taking the stage, Bono introduced the Edge, who in an emotional speech expressed how the recording of "One" in Berlin — inspired by Germany's then-recent reunification and symbol as the new Europe — "brought the band together." More East/West references abounded. Upon winning the award for Best Urban, Jay-Z, donning sunglasses and a black leather jacket, succinctly said, "The will come a day when the only walls that come down are just music," then said something about the Jonas Brothers.

Both Lady Gaga (Best New Act) and Eminem (Best Male) accepted their awards remotely through televised acceptance speeches.

And what is an awards show in Germany without the Hoff? Clad in a dazzling chrome silver dinner jacket, David Hasselhoff returned the country's seemingly undying love for him by flashing his select knowledge of the native language. "Yo! Twenty years! Alles klar! I am not responsible for the wall falling down," the former "Baywatch" actor announced with an apparent slur. "Wie gehts? Alles klar! Gut!"

But it was three-time winner Beyoncé (Best Song, "Halo"; Best Female; Best Video, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)") who had the best line of the night. Having performed earlier in a silken red set straight out of a Daphne du Maurier novel, the visibly weary singer simply said upon receiving her final award: "There is one person I want to thank, and that is Jay — for putting a ring on it!" then shot her fist into the air to loud cheers. "You go, B!" Katy Perry shouted from the sidelines.

Despite other spirited performances from Jay-Z, Shakira and overwhelmingly popular local androgynoids Tokio Hotel, the true stage spectacle of the night came from Leona Lewis. What started off as a rather standard rendition of "Happy," set against a starry background, experienced a jaw-dropping special effect as a green vortex whirred around the singer then dramatically vanished into glittering stardust.

In the much-publicized highlight of the evening, Dublin rockers U2 performed a free 20-minute set in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate for the rabid 10,000 fans who had secured a spot online. Shot several hours earlier and beamed into the arena, the concert moved the audience even remotely as the giant pillars were emblazoned with the words "One Love" and "Freedom." "Happy birthday, Berlin!" frontman Bono crowed during a performance of "One," his voice both soaring and sage.

U2 returned to the big screen to close out the show, this time with Jay-Z freestyling over a performance of "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Jay-Z rapped in the lyrics from Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up." The gates behind them lit up in the holiday colors of green and red, like an early present. Bono leaned in to hold to Jay-Z's hand as the duo raised them up triumphantly in the air.

It was 20 years ago that the Berlin Wall came down, successfully uniting East and West Germany and putting a metaphorical stake through the heart of the Cold War. The historic significance was not lost on the producers of the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday (November 5). To commemorate a reunited Germany, show host Katy Perry threw to U2 live at Brandenburg Gate — the former threshold between East and West Berlin that now stands as a national monument — where thousands had gathered for a historic performance.

"Happy birthday, Berlin!" Bono shouted as his band launched into their hit "One" from 1991's Achtung Baby, which was partially recorded in Berlin and got its title from a sign that Bono said used to hang outside the city's western gate. U2 proved why they had won Best Live Act earlier in the night as they plowed through the anthemic track and an elaborate light show was projected onto the gate behind them, flashing words like "Love" and "Freedom." The crowd of Berliners sang along with every note and held their cell phones aloft, creating a haunting glow.

When the final notes of "One" faded out, Bono began a call-and-response with the crowd before tearing into "Magnificent," a fiery song from their latest album No Line on the Horizon. "Happy birthday, Berlin!" Bono shouted one last time at the song's completion. For the thousands gathered and the millions watching around the world, it was a fitting celebration.

NEW YORK — For the second night in a row, Tom Hanks walked onstage at Madison Square Garden to do the introduction for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert, and for the second night in a row some of the greatest rock acts of all time shared the stage. Performances varied from classic hits to once-in-a-lifetime collaborations as Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck, Metallica and U2 all brought out big-name guests.

Jerry Lee Lewis got things started again, this time performing "Great Balls Fire" and literally kicking down his seat before exiting to make way for the rest of the acts.
Franklin took the stage in a red dress that was outshined only by the sound of her voice as she opened the night with "A Natural Woman." Her set included a collaboration with Annie Lennox and one with Lenny Kravitz, who added his voice to her classic hit "Think." When asked afterward how her duet with Lenny came about, she said it was due to his friendship with her son, who also happened to play lead guitar for her band that night.

Next, one of the all-time great guitar players performed as a replacement for a reportedly ailing Eric Clapton. This seemed fitting, since in the 1960s, Jeff Beck was Eric's bandmate in the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page. Jeff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame this year, and on Friday night he reminded everyone why it was an honor that was well deserved. Sting, Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top each took a shot at matching their voice to Jeff's guitar, and each felt like a an experiment in music that went terribly right, especially when Beck and Gibbons recreated Jimmy Hendrix's masterpiece "Foxy Lady." No voice was needed for Jeff's final performance of the night, as he paid tribute to the Beatles with an instrumental version of "A Day in the Life." It was one worthy of the highest allowable score on "Beatles Rock Band."

Metallica brought more than just metal when they hit the stage. Starting off with "For Whom the Bell Tolls," the boys were then joined by Lou Reed, before succumbing to the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne. Together they paid tribute to Black Sabbath by performing "Iron Man" and "Paranoid." Then things took an unexpected turn when Metallica teamed up with the Kinks frontman Ray Davies, giving a metal edge to the punk classic "You Really Got Me." Before calling it a night, the boys ended the show with one of their biggest hits of all time, "Enter Sandman." This had its own unexpected twist, as Yankee footage began to play on the monitors above them for no apparent reason. Then again, this is New York during the World Series.

The final and maybe biggest act of the second night at MSG was U2. First, they shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, performing "Because the Night," a song Bono said his band only wishes they could have written. His passion for the track became even more apparent when he decided to do it a second time because it was clean on the first take. Bruce stayed on for one more song, lending his voice to the classic U2 song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The next collaboration was one that included a much younger act, by Hall of Fame standards, when the Black Eyed Peas came out to sing "Where is the Love." Fergie stuck around when Mick Jagger came out to perform "Gimme Shelter." Mick and Bono kept the energy high, turning "Stuck in a Moment" into a duet. And finally, U2 performed "Beautiful Day," bringing the night to a beautiful end.

You don't build the most high-tech, enormous stage in the history of rock and then just put the thing in mothballs. And that's exactly why U2 will be bringing their massive 360 Tour back to North America next summer for another string of dates in a handful of the cities they missed the first time around and a few they clearly just can't leave behind.

The return engagements will find the Irish superstars hitting up Chicago and Toronto again, along with new dates in Oakland, California; Edmonton, Alberta; Anaheim, California; Denver; Seattle; East Lansing, Michigan; Miami; Philadelphia; and Montreal. The first gig on the 2010 12-city trek is a June 6 stop at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California and the swing is slated to take the group through a July 19 show at the new Meadowland Stadium in East Rutherford. A string of European dates will follow in August and run through early October.

After a live broadcast of Sunday night's show at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, the current leg of the tour will wrap on Wednesday night with a show at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. Though they've played to more than 3 million fans in 44 cities, smashed attendance records at the Rose Bowl and New York's Giants Stadium, the band has said the massive tour has yet to break even due to the enormous production costs of setting up and designing the 170-ton, $40 million stage.

To add insult to injury, singer Bono recently told The Associated Press that he laments that sales of the group's latest album, No Line on the Horizon, have been somewhat soft, making for U2's lowest-selling CD in more than a decade.

U2 360 Tour dates, according to their Web site:
» 6/6 - Anaheim, CA @ Angel Stadium
» 6/12 - Denver, CO 2 Invesco Field at Mile High
» 6/16 - Oakland, CA @ Oakland Coliseum
» 7/9 - Miami, FL @ Land Shark Stadium
» 7/12 - Philadelphia, PA @ Lincoln Financial Field

In announcing the show, manager Paul McGuinness said, "The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time. As we're filming the L.A. show, it's the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 — this time U2 can go to them, globally."

In addition to streaming live, the full concert will be available as video-on-demand, following two full replays after the live stream, on both U2.com and YouTube.com.

Even the biggest rock star on the planet could be drowned out by the sound of 60,000 people singing, "And I still haven't found what I'm looking for." So, Bono let the crowd do his job for him.

U2 played the first of their New York-area shows Wednesday night at Giants Stadium. Beginning with "Breathe," a tune from their latest album No Line on the Horizon, the show roller-coastered from dance party to history lesson and back in the way that every U2 fan in the arena anticipated.

Three songs in, Bono paused to thank show openers, Muse, shouting out that they were #1 on iTunes in 24 countries (though they were only #3 on the U.S. charts).

Moments later, he stopped again. "Happy Bithday, Bruce Springsteen. 60 years old!" announced the U2 frontman. "Sing it for the Boss: And I still haven't found what I'm looking for!"

When the band transitioned into Springsteen's "She's the One," the speculation that the Boss might make an onstage appearance shot through the crowd like lightning. Bono modified the lyrics to "He's the one," ending the song with a humble apology: "Excuse us, Bruce." Although the cameo didn't happen, the crowd roared with approval.

Bono interrupted "Beautiful Day" with a shout-out to another music legend. "I want to do something for Quincy Jones, who is here tonight." Somehow, he then was able to fit a couple of lines from Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" into "Beautiful Day."

Some of the audience may have been scratching their heads when Bono dedicated the title song from No Line on the Horizon to Sugimoto-san. Hiroshi Sugimoto, as it turns out, is the photographer whose photos appear on the cover of the new album.

In addition to newer tunes, the band brought back crowd-pleasing rock anthems like "Mysterious Ways," "New Year's Day," "Vertigo," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "City of Blinding Lights" and "One." A dance version of "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" with bongo drums should be the anthem for the 2010 World Cup.

Of course, it wouldn't be a U2 show if you didn't get a lesson on the world's suffering. Bono talked about nonviolent revolutions against the suffering in Iran and dedicated "Walk On" to embattled Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The highlight of the night, however, was much more subdued. The Irish rocker spied — in the pit in front of the stage — a tattooed fellow countryman, who requested a song to dedicate to his mother up in the stands. The impromptu acoustic version of "Stuck in a Moment" that followed had an emotional purity that shows just why this band is still filling stadiums after all these years.

Halfway through the hard-charging new rock documentary, "It Might Get Loud," Jimmy Page throws on an old, crackling record, closes his eyes and starts jamming on an imaginary guitar. For a few seconds, despite his silvery ponytail and the fact that he was the lead guitarist for arguably the greatest rock band ever, the 65-year-old could be any kid in any bedroom, giving himself over to the pure pleasure of music. After all these years, all those stadium concerts and all those millions of albums sold, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page still plays the freakin' air guitar.

It is a sublime moment in a documentary filled with such rare glimpses into the private passions and public music of three generations' worth of venerated lead guitarists — Jack White of the White Stripes, the Edge of U2 and Page — each of whom have highly distinct — and at times oppositional — musical styles, yet share the same undying, irrepressible love for the electric guitar.

But that, as director Davis Guggenheim told MTV News during a recent interview, is the exactly the point of the documentary. "Every generation comes up in rebellion of the next generation," he said. "Led Zeppelin rebelled against these pretty-boy pop bands. U2 came up hating the big-hair stadium bands. And the White Stripes were saying, 'We don't like this overproduced, stadium-band sound.' A lot of times you express your rebelliousness with an electric guitar."

Somehow Guggenheim managed to corral these three guys into a warehouse for two days to chat and play together. Interspersed with this epic jam-session are the times when Guggenheim followed the artists around with a camera, getting them to tell stories about childhood epiphanies, professional struggles and the zig-zagging path toward rock stardom. We see White constructing a makeshift guitar out of a wooden plank and a Coke bottle, then wailing away as the cows on his Tennessee farm look on; the Edge visiting the school of his youth and pointing out the concrete slab on which U2 first performed as teenagers; and Page, who avoided any type of on-camera interview for decades but ends up giving Guggenheim a candid tour of the estate where Zeppelin recorded in the '70s and where drummer John Bonham overdosed at the age of 32.

How did the director pull this whole thing together, convincing these ego-heavy lead guitarists, in need of neither money nor exposure, to hang out with each other for a couple days — to open up about what motivates them to write songs? Maybe it had something to do with Guggenheim's last documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" — an Oscar-winning investigation into global warming. (If you can make Al Gore look like a rock star as he heads through stadium corridors to deliver a PowerPoint slideshow, making actual rock stars look cool wouldn't be too much of a stretch.)But when it came to the camera-shy Page, it required something a little bit more.

"It took seduction," Guggenheim said. "It took us telling him how passionate we were about songs and songwriting, talking about the creative process."

The film, which opens on August 14, no doubt belongs in the upper echelon of rock documentaries, joining films like "The Last Waltz" and "Gimme Shelter," if only for the singular window it opens onto Page's life and work. Fifty years from now, if kids rocking their air guitars to Zeppelin tunes want to know what Page was really like, "Get Loud" will be their essential viewing.

And as Guggenheim explained, the connection between the past and the present, between old-school blues and classic rock, between punk and whatever comes next, will always be there. "The point of the movie is it could be anybody, any artist," he said. "It could be the next artist you haven't even heard of. It could be the guys from Blink-182. It really is the creative spark that you see in the movie. By looking back and seeing Jimmy Page and how he started and invented the dirty guitar sound, you can find that line all the way back through U2, through Jack White and now to the new guys who are doing it, like Green Day."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will celebrate its 25th anniversary in style on October 29 and 30 with a pair of all-star shows at Madison Square Garden.

On the bill for the first night are Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band; Simon & Garfunkel; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Friends; Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. The next night will feature sets from Metallica, U2, Eric Clapton and Aretha Franklin, plus more performers to be announced in the coming weeks.

All the acts on the bill are Rock Hall inductees, and the announcement of the show promises that the "music legends and their special guests will be your guides through 60 years of rock and roll history."

Net proceeds from the show will go to create a permanent endowment for the Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. A highlight special from the two-night show will be screened on HBO. General-public tickets will go on sale August 3, but title sponsor American Express is offering cardholders a presale from July 27 to August 2 that features VIP packages priced from $750 to $100,000.

Rolling Stone magazine reported that the shows will feature a number of collaborations, including CSN sharing the stage with other California-based artists, Metallica leading a hard-rock jam, and Wonder and Franklin fronting a soul revue backed by Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

As noted in The New York Times, the math on the anniversary date is a bit fuzzy, as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was founded in 1983 and the first induction ceremony was in January 1986. Among the creative consultants on the show are actor Tom Hanks, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, rock icon Robbie Robertson and Rolling Stone magazine boss and Hall chairman Jann Wenner.

Event executive producer Wenner said in a statement, "Twenty-five years ago ... Ahmet Ertegun created this foundation to recognize and celebrate the music and careers of artists whose music helped shape and define our generation. These once-in-a-lifetime concerts are designed to celebrate the artists and their music."

Adam Lambert is not shy. The 28-year-old Los Angeles musical-theater veteran has made plenty of brash choices so far this year on "American Idol," which is one of the reasons he's in the top three and likely headed to the finals next week.
But his boldest song choice on Tuesday night's performance show wasn't his own; it was Simon Cowell's. The judge, not known for showing a soft, emotional side, appeared to give Lambert a big, fat home run right down the middle by choosing U2's "One" for the singer. But given the song's iconic status as one of the group's biggest, most beloved hits — which Cowell said Bono personally gave him approval to use on the show — the choice could have turned into a tender trap for Lambert.

(Read about Kris Allen's cover of Kanye West's "Heartless" here.)

Standing center stage under a blue spotlight with an angelic look on his face, his typically wild hair tamed to match his atypically muted denim ensemble, Lambert took the song to church, bringing some gospel-via-Broadway flavor to the Irish rock band's 1991 hit. Lambert got a bit of flak from judge Randy Jackson for switching up the song's melody, but overall, the panel once again gave him high praise.

The song, which U2 have played at every single concert since its live debut in February 1992 (according to U2gigs.com), is often mistakenly thought of as a love ballad. But Bono has said that it is about how our differences force us to get along in order to survive in this world, whether we like it or not.

Considering the difficulty U2 endured over what musical direction to take while trying to finish the album "One" appeared on, 1992's electronica-edged Achtung Baby, it could very well be interpreted as a metaphor for the band's own creative strife. It has also been interpreted as being about a woman, or an AIDS patient telling his parents he's dying from the disease.

In the end, many people took inspiration from what they saw as the song's uplifting message: "One love/ One blood/ One life/ You got to do what you should/ One life with each other/ Sisters, brothers/ One life, but we're not the same/ We get to carry each other/ Carry each other."

The gay community adopted the song as a plea for tolerance. In keeping with the theme, some of the proceeds from the single were donated to AIDS research, and the song's title has also been lent to the One Campaign, a Bono-led charity initiative against global poverty.

"One" was voted the Best Song Ever by Q magazine in 2003, dubbed the best single of 1992 in a Rolling Stone reader's poll, named the 36th greatest song of all time by the magazine and ranked #2 among the Greatest Songs of the '90s by VH1. Curiously, the band made three different videos for the tune, one of which featured the group's members in drag (with Bono singing to his father), another that was mostly footage of buffaloes and flowers with the song's title in different languages and a third that focused on Bono sitting at a bar smoking a cigarette and drinking beer.

Mary J. Blige recorded a gospel cover of the tune for her 2005 The Breakthrough album, and she performed it with Bono and the group at the 2006 Grammy Awards. That same year, it was used in ads for the World Cup soccer tournament. Among the other acts that have covered the song: Johnny Cash, the Cowboy Junkies, Joe Cocker and Warren Haynes.

Just weeks after the Jonas Brothers' "3D Concert Experience" soundtrack was denied the top spot in its chart debut thanks to Taylor Swift, the tween country star will block another peer from the #1 slot next week when the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack has to settle for #2.

Only this time, Swift had some help, as she's just one of 20 artists on the chart-topping Now That's What I Call Music! 30 compilation — also featuring hits from Kanye West, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry — which will claim the pole position on the Billboard albums chart thanks to a first-week tally of 146,000.

Not far behind is the deluxe edition of the "Twilight" soundtrack, which sold another 102,000 copies to hold on to the #3 position, just ahead of the chart debut of Keri Hilson's oft-delayed In a Perfect World ... , which claims #4 thanks to 94,000 units shifted.

Kelly Clarkson's reign at #1 ends after just two weeks, as her comeback album All I Ever Wanted slips to #5 on sales of close to 52,000, just barely edging out U2's No Line on the Horizon, which falls to #6 with more than 51,000 units, squeaking ahead of Lady Gaga's The Fame, which drops to #7 with sales of 45,000.

After months of familiar faces, the rest of the top 10 features a number of debuts, including a #8 bow from Papa Roach for their Metamorphosis (44,000), Jim Jones' Pray IV Reign (43,000) and Martina McBride's Shine (41,000). Thinking man's metallers Mastodon just missed a top 10 debut with their latest concept album, Crack the Skye, which landed at #11 on sales of just over 41,000, pushing Swift's Fearless (40,000) down to #12, marking the first time since that album's release five months ago that it hasn't been in the top 10.

There were more debuts as well, including angsty rockers Blue October at #13 with Approaching Normal (37,000), Slim Thug at #14 with Boss of All Bosses (32,000), Doom (the masked rapper known as MF Doom) at #52 with Born Like This (11,000) and former "American Idol" contestant Mandisa at #83 with her second full-length studio album of contemporary gospel Freedom.

Elsewhere, The-Dream's Love vs. Money had a short stay in the top 10, falling to #14 in week three on sales of 36,000, while the Decemberists' vaunted rock opera Hazards of Love managed to gain 35 percent in sales (28,000) while falling four spots to #19, and Adele's 19 jumped nearly 20 spots to #23 (21,000) after her appearance on "Dancing With the Stars."

Over on the catalog chart, the reissue of Pearl Jam's iconic debut Ten topped the charts with 60,000 sold, and thanks to the "American Idol" bump, two volumes of Motown hits saw triple-digit increases, with Motown #1's Volume 2 shifting 6,000 for a 1,000 percent jump over the previous week and Motown #1's leaping 645 percent on sales of 5,000. Fans were also clearly digging Adam Lambert's take on "Tracks of My Tears," as that song's digital sales were up 477 percent over the previous week to 1,000.

Look for chart debuts next week from Bow Wow, Flo Rida, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Keith Urban.
