The Motor City heats up this week with two big releases. D12 welcome you to D12 World, that magical place where "U R the One," the "40 Oz." never stops flowing, and Eminem appears on the lead single, "My Band." Meanwhile, Detroit native Jack White produces Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose and also joins her on a few tracks.

Patti Smith spends this week Trampin' around, while Diana Krall's The Girl in the Other Room finds her covering Tom Waits' "Temptation," Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," and husband Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue." On the rest of the album, Krall and Costello collaborate on new material.

"American Idol" Season 3: Greatest Soul Classics features the top 12 finalists all souled out on songs like "Chain of Fools" (Fantasia Barrino), "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Diana Degarmo), and "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" (Matt Rogers).

Motörhead, Helmet, Twisted Sister, Whitesnake and Poison are among the bands that play Spin the Bottle on A Tribute to Kiss. Sharing shelf space are Hot Boys rapper Turk's Penitentiary Chances and Joey McIntyre's 8:09.

Finally, a small black box is the star archival release of the week — but it's not just any black box. Black Sabbath's Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978 contains the group's eight studio albums — arguably the "big bang" of heavy metal — with all their original cover artwork. Also included are a three-song DVD of a 1970 TV performance and an 80-page booklet (with a velvet cover) containing photos, liner notes, lyrics and a band history.

C-Murder appeared in a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, court on Tuesday for the final hearing in his effort to gain a new murder trial. Judge Martha Sassone said she would rule later on the request to overturn the rapper's conviction of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 16-year-old Steve Thomas during an MC battle. His defense argued that he should be given a new trial because prosecutors failed to inform them that some key witnesses had criminal records. Prosecutors countered that they were not aware of one witness' record because it had been expunged, and that the defense knew during the trial about the trouble the other witnesses had with the law but had chosen not to cross-examine them. C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, is looking at a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Meanwhile, his deposition in the wrongful-death suit brought by Thomas' parents is scheduled for April 13. ...

After initially selecting the raunchy celebration of public affection "In Public" for her next single, Kelis has changed her mind. Her follow-up to the suggestive "Milkshake" will now be "Trick Me," a song about scorned love set to a ska-like beat from producer Dallas Austin. She's scheduled to shoot the video for the song at the end of February. ...

Turk was arraigned on charges of first-degree attempted murder Friday (January 30) in a Memphis courthouse, where he will return February 18 to enter his plea in a preliminary hearing. The Hot Boys rapper's bail was also reduced from $1 million to $750,000. ... After Fred Durst lambasted a Spanish journalist on the Limp Bizkit Web site for asking about his "knack for pissing people off" and then dared the writer to be "front and center" at next month's concert in Spain, the scribe shot back in an open letter to the Bizkit bigwig. While defending his line of questioning, Jordi Meya asked that Durst "prove [him] wrong by having an adult conversation, instead of trying to kick [his] ass when [he] comes to Spain." ...

Ryan Adams will undergo surgery this week to repair his left wrist, which he broke during a January 22 show in Liverpool, England. His North American tour, which was to run from March 2 in Columbia, Missouri, to March 26 in Denver, has been canceled. ... Rapper Mos Def will play the role of Ford Prefect in the upcoming flick "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," based on the novel by Douglas Adams about a man who is saved from the destruction of planet Earth by his best friend, who turns out to be an alien. Mos, who also starred in "The Italian Job" and "Monster's Ball," will start shooting in April. ...

He may not be the hunkiest musician on the block, but Elvis Costello knows the secret to making the ladies swoon, which he promises to share in a forthcoming book. His idea for the how-to book (as in "How to play guitar, sing loudly and impress girls ... or boys," as he says in the proposal) is based on the presumption that people need to take a more punk approach to learning music: "While I am not promoting musical illiteracy, it is my own experience that the rapid mastery of a few chords gives almost instant satisfaction and encouragement to the beginner. ... This in turn may actually inspire a curiosity to learn more about music, to train the ear to understand harmony ... and all the while basking in the admiring and occasionally lustful gaze of members of the opposite sex." ... Coolio is bringing his braids to TV both here and abroad. After losing his shirt on Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown," the rapper is set to get all alphabetic on comedienne Kathy Griffin and former "Cosby" kid Keshia Knight Pulliam on "Celebrity Spelling Bee," a three-part FOX series beginning February 13. He'll also participate in "Comeback — The Great Chance," a German TV show that pits artists past their prime against each other for a chance to record with an as-yet-unnamed superstar producer. ...

If you ever wanted to have the Offspring stage a concert in your living room, now you can — only problem is that the bandmembers are just three inches tall and may cause small children to choke. The Offspring collectible play set, which is already available in Japan, comes to these shores in a few months. Online orders are being taken at store.merch.com/offspring. ... Rancid's Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen will return to the studio in March to begin work on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to Frederiksen's 2001 side-project album, Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards. Armstrong produced, engineered and mixed that effort. Now on tour with Armstrong and the rest of Rancid, Frederiksen is slated to play with the Bastards at this summer's Vans Warped Tour. ...

Iggy Pop's hometown reunion show with his band the Stooges will be available on a DVD titled "Live in Detroit" on March 23. The proto-punk band's first Motor City show in nearly three decades took place August 25. ... Following in the footsteps of Prince, Metallica and most recently Jay-Z, the Dandy Warhols want to release a Black Album of their own. Comprised of never-before-released material they had recorded prior to releasing ...

Hot Boys rapper Turk was charged Wednesday (January 28) with first-degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting two Memphis, Tennessee, police officers in a Monday raid.

The 22-year-old, whose real name is Tab Virgil, was arrested Monday and is being held on $1 million bail at the Shelby County Jail. He is expected to be arraigned in the next 48 hours.

One of the wounded deputies, 29-year-old Chris Harris, was shot in the jaw, hip and leg and remains in critical condition at the MED medical center following extensive surgery. The other, 31-year-old Jason Pagenkopf, was shot in the neck and has since been released.

The incident began around 2 p.m. on Monday, when a dozen Shelby County narcotics and SWAT officers served a search warrant for drugs believed to be inside an apartment in the Hickory Pointe community in southeast Memphis, according to public information officer Steve Shular.

After no answer from knocking on the door and identifying themselves, the officers entered and began searching the apartment. Turk then allegedly shot at them with a 9 mm handgun. A small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, including spoons and syringes used to inject heroin, were found.

Two other people who were in the apartment at the time were questioned Wednesday, but they will not be charged, according to Shular, who said there is evidence the bullets came from Turk's gun.

"Until the facts come out, he is innocent until proven guilty," Turk's manager, Leroy Hollins II, said in a statement. "As his manager, I know he does not have violent tendencies to commit such an act. This is another case of a good person being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Turk, who hails from Metairie, Louisiana, near New Orleans, has an arrest history involving narcotics, Shular said, and Monday's incident was a violation of a parole mandate on the rapper.

The district attorney ruled Turk a possible flight risk and will not allow him to return to Louisiana unless he posts bail. Turk's case is also being reviewed by the United States attorney's office for additional firearms charges.

Turk was in Memphis recording tracks for his upcoming album and working on remixes for his latest disc, August's Raw & Uncut, according to his manager.

After being discovered by the Cash Money Millionaires in the late '90s, Turk joined the Hot Boys, whose last album, Let 'Em Burn, was also released last year (see "Hot Boys Plan To Burn The Competition With First LP In Four Years"). The rapper released his first solo album in June 2001 (see "Turk Emerges From Cash Money Fringe").
