Bowler caps, bow ties, corsets, crystals, "boobie thingies" — no, these are not the remnants of last weekend's Halloween rave but rather the accoutrements returning host
Katy Perry flounced around in at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. Together with the theme "Katy Kat Club," the Sally Bowles-inspired garb was only appropriate as the 16th annual EMAs returned to its inaugural location of Berlin, just days before the 20th anniversary of when the Berlin wall came tumbling down.

Jay-Z,
Beyoncé, U2, Tokio Hotel, Leona Lewis, David Hasselhoff, Juliette Lewis, Shakira, the Jonas Brothers and Tokio Hotel were just some of the stars that turned up on the red carpet to commence the largest awards show in MTV Europe's history. A staggering 17,000 audience members congregated at Berlin's O2 Arena and Brandenburg Gate, while an estimated 2 billion people tuned in from home.

It was a night contrasted by both the old and new, bad jokes on the German language and crackling political overtones. Veteran act Green Day opened up the show with a blistering two-song performance that had lead singer Billie Joe pogoing his way through the crowd and ending in shooting flames and fireworks as "Minority" slowed to its last four-note chord. (Proving why the group was once synonymous with teenage angst, Joe later returned to the stage after winning for Best Rock with these wise words: "Great that we got the best co-- band — I mean, rock band. Pardon my German.")

A slithering and glittering Katy Perry then took the stage, bellowing out "Herzlich wilkommen meine damen und herren!" and performed a raw-vocal medley that included the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face." Curiously, Perry then ribbed Lady Gaga later during the show when she emerged from a set design involving a giant ruby-red shoe. "They say that if a guy has big shoes, then he has ... the funny thing is, I think this belongs to Lady Gaga!"

The first award of the night went to U2 for Best Live Act. Taking the stage, Bono introduced the Edge, who in an emotional speech expressed how the recording of "One" in Berlin — inspired by Germany's then-recent reunification and symbol as the new Europe — "brought the band together." More East/West references abounded. Upon winning the award for Best Urban, Jay-Z, donning sunglasses and a black leather jacket, succinctly said, "The will come a day when the only walls that come down are just music," then said something about the Jonas Brothers.

Both Lady Gaga (Best New Act) and Eminem (Best Male) accepted their awards remotely through televised acceptance speeches.

And what is an awards show in Germany without the Hoff? Clad in a dazzling chrome silver dinner jacket, David Hasselhoff returned the country's seemingly undying love for him by flashing his select knowledge of the native language. "Yo! Twenty years! Alles klar! I am not responsible for the wall falling down," the former "Baywatch" actor announced with an apparent slur. "Wie gehts? Alles klar! Gut!"

But it was three-time winner Beyoncé (Best Song, "Halo"; Best Female; Best Video, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)") who had the best line of the night. Having performed earlier in a silken red set straight out of a Daphne du Maurier novel, the visibly weary singer simply said upon receiving her final award: "There is one person I want to thank, and that is Jay — for putting a ring on it!" then shot her fist into the air to loud cheers. "You go, B!" Katy Perry shouted from the sidelines.

Despite other spirited performances from Jay-Z, Shakira and overwhelmingly popular local androgynoids Tokio Hotel, the true stage spectacle of the night came from Leona Lewis. What started off as a rather standard rendition of "Happy," set against a starry background, experienced a jaw-dropping special effect as a green vortex whirred around the singer then dramatically vanished into glittering stardust.

In the much-publicized highlight of the evening, Dublin rockers U2 performed a free 20-minute set in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate for the rabid 10,000 fans who had secured a spot online. Shot several hours earlier and beamed into the arena, the concert moved the audience even remotely as the giant pillars were emblazoned with the words "One Love" and "Freedom." "Happy birthday, Berlin!" frontman Bono crowed during a performance of "One," his voice both soaring and sage.

U2 returned to the big screen to close out the show, this time with Jay-Z freestyling over a performance of "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Jay-Z rapped in the lyrics from Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up." The gates behind them lit up in the holiday colors of green and red, like an early present. Bono leaned in to hold to Jay-Z's hand as the duo raised them up triumphantly in the air.

Tokio Hotel's Bill and Tom Kaulitz were just 2 months old when the Berlin Wall, which for decades had separated Germany into two separate political states, came tumbling down. Twenty years later, in the same city, they decided to pay tribute to that momentous event with their performance at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday (November 5).

Taking the stage silhouetted only by four spotlights, as their hometown fans screamed with delight, Tokio Hotel began the somber buildup of "World Behind My Wall," a track from their just-released Humanoid album. Backed by a video display that showed the symbolic dissolving of a brick wall, frontman Bill Kaulitz — wearing dark wraparound shades and a tight black leather jacket — sang the opening refrains, the crowd joining him on each syllable.

He then removed the sunglasses and strode across the stage, joining his TH bandmates — including bassist Georg Listing on piano — as the song began to pick up steam. Bill's brother (and Tokio Hotel guitarist) Tom worked a decidedly Edge-ian melody out of his ax, and drummer Gustav Schafer pounded hard on his kit.

"Wall" built to a fiery crescendo, with Bill screaming the chorus inches from his brother's face, as an image of the Berlin Wall itself appeared on the video screen. As the song hit its most massive section, the stage was filled with licks of pyro, streams of red lasers and massive explosions, as Bill thrust his fist skyward and sang the chorus loudly.

And just as quickly and massively as it built, the song disappeared into the night, and TH stood triumphantly in the middle of the stage, amps still smoking, Listing plinking out the song's final notes on a piano engulfed in flames.

It was a fitting tribute, indeed.

If silver rocked the VMA red carpet, then black definitely ruled the MTV Europe Music Awards red carpet on Thursday (November 5). A galaxy of stars rocked the red carpet of the show, which was held in Berlin to honor the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The night's host, Katy Perry, may have donned a white gown on the red carpet, but it was the lacy black detailing that gave it that vintage Perry charm. Green Day went more formal than punk for the red carpet in their slim-fit suits, all of which were in shades of black or dark gray.

Pete Wentz also wore a black suit to the show, and he embellished his with a newsboy cap. His big fashion statement, however, was a cat-eye shaped black eye he drew on, using makeup.

Leona Lewis also wore black. She turned up in a one-piece, capri-length romper with sparkles on its bottom half. Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove wore a blue-and-black-printed, one-shoulder, sequined minidress. Much like Cosgrove, the look was very young and hip.

The standout fashionistas of the show had to be Tokio Hotel, who surprisingly went for a more couture, mod look than their usual glam rock fashion choices. Bill Kaulitz, rocking a fantastic Mohawk, wore a slim-fitted blazer with sequined pockets and paired it with gray very skinny jeans. The other boys in the group decided to go with function instead of fashion and rocked their dark-colored winter jackets on the carpet.

Everyone knows that Hollywood is addicted to franchises, sequels, reboots and all manner of cinematic rehashings of the pop-culture past. Over 75 percent of the 30 highest-grossing films of the last three years were based on an existing entertainment franchise, which just goes to show there's a reason studios keep reimagining movie history instead of creating something new: audiences love them too.

But do actors? With Halloween almost upon us, we wanted to know if the folks out in La-La Land secretly had a horror flick they're dying to remake.

Tom Hanks' fave picks — "Night of the Living Dead" and " Nosferatu" — have already been refashioned in one form or another, so the Oscar-winner decided he'd need to strike out for fresh territory. "Why don't you make a brand-new one?" he wondered aloud. "Knock off the remakes. Call it something like 'The Hyundai Accord That Ate Los Angeles.' Wouldn't that be scary!"

Justin Long counted "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Psycho" as his most beloved horror movies, but when it came to starring in a remake, he had a different idea of what would scare audiences. " 'High School Musical 2!' " he told us. "I'd love to play the Zac Efron part. That would be a horror movie if I was the teen-idol guy!"

Though they're not thespians themselves, the guys in Tokio Hotel had some strong opinions about which scary movies should be remade, possibly with them in front of the camera. "You can remake 'Saw' !" frontman Bill Kaulitz laughed, explaining that he is only 20 and doesn't know many older films. " 'Saw' is really great. I saw all the 'Saw' movies!"

Guitarist Tom Kaulitz's pick? " 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' " (In his defense, the title didn't sound so silly when he uttered its translation in German.)

Tobin Bell is one man who has been front and bloody center in a scary movie — a bunch of them, in fact: the "Saw" franchise that Kaulitz so adores. But if he had the choice, Bell would take Shakespeare's "Richard III" for a frightening ride. "I think that'd be fascinating," he said, reasoning that while there have been many takes on the play, his would be the scariest. "I love the journey that he takes. He is one of the classic villains and conflicted people."

Uma Thurman has played superheroes, comic villains and martial-arts badasses, but said she couldn't bring herself to star in any sort of scary movie. "I'm not a horror person," the actress confessed. "They really scare me — and it's a big problem. I've never been offered a horror movie. Maybe I don't give people that horror movie feeling!"

Halloween is almost upon us, and there are several celebrities out there who would be perfect inspirations for your Halloween costume. Sure, you can dress like Bella and Edward from "Twilight," or you could even dress like Lady Gaga (more on that Friday). But how about teen-favorite rockers Tokio Hotel?

We caught up with TH's Tom and Bill Kaulitz to get their ideas for stepping into their shoes Saturday night. Bill said he has an easy look to copy, despite his glam exterior. All you need is a Mohawk, some makeup and fingerless gloves. "I think that's the easiest," he said of fans trying to emulate his look, adding that they'll also need "a leather jacket."

His brother, Tom, had some advice for aspiring Bills, making his brother laugh as he jokingly suggested: "Makeup, ugly face, ugly smile."

During an interview with the rockers last October, we surprised them with some Halloween candy after hearing that they were big fans of American sweets. "In Germany, we do not have Halloween, which is a shame. We do have some of this candy though," Bill laughed at the time, surveying the mounds of sweets before him. "We have M&Ms, we have these things here — Ritter Sport — and these too, [Kinder Surprise Eggs]. ... I'm not really into chocolate; I really love all the sour stuff. ... I just like the surprises [in the Kinder]."

It's Halloween Week, the spookiest time of the year and also the most fun.

As we've already pointed out, behind all the makeup and beyond the millions of albums sold, Tokio Hotel are just your average bunch of twenty-something guys. Which means that a large portion of their time is spent discussing the finer points of super-sexy celebs like Megan Fox.

And Jessica Alba. And Beyoncé. And Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. And, well, you get the idea. Tokio Hotel love talking about the ladies (except for bassist Georg Listing, who makes it a point of saying he has a girlfriend).

"He's on the phone [with her], like, the whole day, he's Skyping. He's boring right now, because he has a girlfriend," frontman Bill Kaulitz laughed.

"He's boring! You can't go in the strip club with Georg!" guitarist Tom Kaulitz added.

Listing just smiled. You get the feeling he's gotten used to this by now. But the rest of the guys are more than willing to talk about their ideal girls, most of whom seem to have one thing in common: They're all famous.

"I think it has to be a mixture. Maybe the Olsen twins? I like both. I like Megan Fox as well," Bill said of his dream girl. "I really believe in love at first sight though. I don't know. I don't have 'famous girls' that I like. But the Olsen twins are cute, and Megan Fox is cute — they look good, but I don't know Jessica Alba and the Olsen twins, so ..."

"And Beyoncé and Jessica Alba too," interrupted Tom, who is definitely the extroverted ladies man of the group. The way he talks, it would appear that females take up about 75 percent of his time.

But Bill is the opposite. Though he's the lead singer of an internationally famous rock act (and a sex symbol in his own right), he's not looking for a quick fling. He's after something much deeper.

" I've never had a girl just for one night in my hotel room," he said, adding that the last time he had a girlfriend, he was 13 or 14 years old. "It's something I miss. I really want to have a soul mate. But, it's like, I don't want a girl for one night. I want true love, because I don't have so much time, and I want to spend my time with the right girl."

Then, like clockwork, Tom chimes in again. He's more than willing to hook up with a celeb or two (or perhaps one of TH's adoring fans). He's looking for something a little more ... immediate.

"I just need to love for one night," he laughed.

The last time Tokio Hotel's Bill and Tom Kaulitz were able to live like normal kids was five years ago, just before the release of their debut album, Schrei, which sold nearly 2 million copies in Europe and turned them into instant celebrities. Of course, given that it's the Kaulitz brothers, their definition of "normal" might vary slightly from yours.

"Tom and me rented a theme park," Bill sighed. "It wasn't normal, but ... it was just our friends and family for our birthday and that was very nice."

And ever since then, they've existed almost exclusively under the microscope, eternally followed by screaming fans and pushy paparazzi. It's a life spent under near-constant surveillance — the life of a celebrity and, despite what you might think, it's about the loneliest existence imaginable. And though the guys in the band swear they're looking for even more fame with their new album, the just-released Humanoid, they'll freely admit that it comes with a price: their freedom.

"I think I miss just being able to go out on the street and have fun ... [to be] spontaneous. You have to plan every single step," Bill said. "When I want to go in a shop or somewhere, I have to call the people [and say], 'OK, I want to go into the shop,' and then maybe I can do it next week. I miss being able to just hang out with people and friends and grab ice cream or go to the cinema ... the normal stuff."

It seems the more famous they get, the more Tokio Hotel crave the trappings of normality — the daily, seemingly insignificant stuff that you or I take for granted. There's word they keep using to describe it: "spontaneity." They miss that more than anything, it would seem, because on the heels of Humanoid, nothing in their lives is spur-of-the-moment. It's all planned and carefully mapped, because it has to be: after all, even the most minute details of their lives have become public record, right down to their dogs.

"I miss just being able to go out with my dog, in nature and being spontaneous," Bill's brother Tom said. "Our dogs are famous now."

Since blasting onto the international scene with their debut album, Schrei, Tokio Hotel have become just as famous for their style as they have for their songs ... perhaps even more so. Which is why, when they recently sat down with MTV News for an extended interview, we decided to take a trip with them, back through time and space and, of course, hairstyles.

Because while some things have remained the same throughout the years (namely drummer Gustav Schäfer and bassist Georg Listing), Tokio Hotel's two biggest fashion plates — frontman Bill Kaulitz and his brother, guitarist Tom — have undergone some rather drastic transformations.

Which is why we had them take a look at old photographs, taken at key moments in their band's career, and discuss their fashion decisions (and perhaps even figure out just what they were thinking too). And to do this, we went back to their infancy as a band: 2003, when they were all so, so young.

The Year: 2003
The Look: Bill as a thrift-store punk rocker, the other three guys as baby-faced skate rats.

Bill Kaulitz: I was really proud of this shirt [I'm wearing] because I made it. It was, like, a cheap shirt from a supermarket, and I cut the sleeves off.

Tom Kaultiz: And here you can see that Georg always had great style. [Laughs.] ... He was always beautiful and always great hair.

BK: It was a tiny room [we rehearsed in]. It was great. We wanted to be successful, we wanted to shoot a video. We just wrote a song and we were like, "OK, let's go onstage! Let's shoot a video for it!" That was always our dream. ... We just wanted to have fans and a crowd who would listen.

TK: We played every weekend in small clubs. I think at this time we had, like, 10 fans.

The Year: 2005
The Look: Bill begins his hair odyssey, Tom falls hard for hip-hop, Gustav and Georg cease to age.

BK: That was at a really, really huge award show in Germany, and we got our first award. We were so nervous — I think you can see it in my eyes. I think [my hair's] a bit too short, but at the time, I liked it. ... You always think you are there. I was always happy with my look and with my hair, and so when I look at the old pictures, I don't like the hair now, but I was happy for that moment, and that's great.

The Year: 2006
The Look: Bill's hair stars going up, up, up.

BK: I think we look tired in this one. You can see that we worked a lot from this time to this time. This was also at an awards show. I think my hair kind of looks most normal here. But it's starting. Everything's starting.

Georg Listing: You can see me getting fatter.

The Year: 2007
The Look: Leather, lots of leather. And some bleached tips.

TK: We look a bit happier. You can see [the confidence].

BK: The record company [wanted me to have a stylist.] I remember the first meeting, and they said, "OK, Bill, you need a stylist," and I was like, "Huh? I wanted to wear my own stuff, and that's what I told you." It's the most important thing, that you're happy with your music and your style. You can't create success and you can't create a successful band.

The Year: 2008
The Look: The Porcupine Era is officially under way.

BK: I'm doing the point here, because it's really easy for photographers. At first they take some pictures, and then they're like, "Do something crazy!" and then you just do that [points], and everyone's like, "Oh my gosh!" and everyone's freaking out.

The Year: 2009
The Look: The boys become men. Men with really great hair.

BK: This day was a really great day, I really liked those pictures. That was in Spain.

TK: And look, Georg is skinny now and Gustav isn't.

You would think Tokio Hotel would be getting a little tired of living life directly underneath the spotlight, of being mobbed by fans wherever they go, of having zero privacy and even less freedom. You'd be wrong, of course. In fact, they want more of it — all of it — which is why, after years of dominating Europe, they've set their sights on conquering America too.

"The first time we were here, we just went out on the street, and it was great. We were like, 'Oh, that's a nice place to hang out. Nobody knows us,' " Tokio Hotel frontman Bill Kaulitz said. "But, you know, success is kind of a drug. You want it in every country. So it was really important for us to come over and play the first shows."

<embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:447662"width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26id%3D1624227%26vid%3D447662" wmode="transparent" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always"base=".">

Those first shows happened last year, when the band landed here in the States to promote their English-language debut, Scream. The shows were sold-out, and the crowds were rabid, but still, for the most part, the guys were able to wander the streets freely, drawing only the occasional confused look from passersby. But now, on their second go-round, with their second English album (the just-released Humanoid) all of that is starting to change. For the better.

"It's easier than Europe [to walk around on the streets], but it depends what you're doing. When you come for some interviews, and no one knows that, then it's fine," Bill explained. "If you have a show or something, then our fans are at the hotel, and some photographers. And it feels good, but we want more."

So it's looking more and more like it's goodbye privacy here in America too — which is just fine for the guys in Tokio Hotel. Like they said, success is a drug, and they're addicted. It's not a stretch to say that someday they want to be the biggest band on the planet — because, really, privacy is overrated.

"Maybe someday; it's changing," Bill's brother Tom laughed. "It's not like we can go out and nobody knows us anymore. Who knows what will happen next?"

Not surprisingly, given the inherent crossover in fanbase (and the shared obsession with all things dark and morose), Tokio Hotel supporters have long campaigned to have their favorite band — or, more specifically, frontman Bill Kaulitz — make a cameo in the "Twilight" film series.

To further this cause, they've created custom trailers and Kaulitz-ized <a href="http://www.tokiohotel.com/us/forum/showthread.php?t=4813&page=18 target="_blank">"New Moon" posters. But they don't need to convince Bill; he'd love to have a hand in the "Twilight" series, and he thinks he'd make a darn good vampire too. He's just waiting for the invitation.

"It would be the perfect role for me," Kaulitz told MTV News. "That's kind of my dream thing, to play a vampire. I always loved vampire movies, but I never had the right script. ... I had a lot of offers from different movies, but they weren't the right things. I think [a 'Twilight' film] would be the perfect movie."

Kauliz's obsession with vampires actually goes beyond "Twilight" and even movies in general. In fact, he connected with them from a pretty early age, and they're actually part of the reason he started his signature look.

"I was at a Halloween party when I was really young, and I was a vampire," he said. "And then I started to wear makeup and stuff. That was the whole beginning. That was the whole story."

So, producers of "Twilight," Bill Kaultiz is interested in appearing in one of your films. He'll bring a legion of devoted fans into the theaters, and his band would even contribute a song to the soundtrack. And if you're worried about him upstaging Robert Pattinson, well, Kaultiz assures you that wouldn't happen either.
