Justin Timberlake brought sexy back in 2006 with his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, and since then he's kept himself busy working in the studio with a myriad of other pop stars ranging from Madonna to Rihanna. But fans eagerly anticipate what Timberlake has up his sleeve for his next musical venture — but it could be long wait.

These days, Justy T is a little too busy concocting hits for other artists to pen any of his own. "We just went into the studio with Jamie Foxx and did a couple things for him and it was kind of nice to write R&B again," he told MTV News. "It was kind of refreshing, and I feel like we're putting a new spin on it — but as far as things for myself, I haven't really made a commitment in my mind about what I want it to sound like."

Timberlake is waiting for some inspiration to hit him before he decides on his next solo direction. "So, until it kind of slaps me in the face, I'm going to tinker around with everything," he said. "I'm obviously not the type of artist who rushes anything. I've done, like, two records in the last eight years."

Timberlake enjoys the process of making music too much to rush it. "You know, I just believe that the process is what it's really all about. And if you make the process [like] what I was able to have the luck of tapping into for the first two [albums], the end comes out the way it comes out," he explained. "For me it is about the process — the discovery of whatever it is it's going to be. That's the most fun part."

When Michael Jackson joined Justin Timberlake and 'NSYNC onstage at the 2001 Video Music Awards, JT didn't get a chance to sing with one of his idols. The King of Pop just busted out a number of his signature dance moves as the crowd at New York's Metropolitan Opera House went nuts. A couple months later, though, Timberlake got the opportunity of a lifetime when he performed — and sung — with MJ at his 30th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden.

Years later, and months after Jackson's passing, Timberlake maintains that Jackson's vocal dexterity might be the biggest legacy he's left behind.

"If there's anything that I think my generation of artists — including myself, obviously — emulate about Michael, it's that he felt what he was doing so much that his vocal presentation of the song, you can tell when he was cutting the record he was probably dancing in the booth," Timberlake told MTV News on the red carpet at his Las Vegas charity concert. "At least that's what it seems like to me. That type of energy, that kinetic energy into the music, I think that's what we all try to emulate. From hip-hop to pop to rock and roll, I think that there's inflection that he put into music as a vocalist that no one had ever really heard that way."

Though Timberlake professed to be a huge fan of Jackson's tunes as a kid, he also admitted that he didn't have a true understanding of Jackson's legacy until he left home to pursue a career as an artist. "Growing up in Tennessee, I never really understood the phenomenon that was Michael Jackson or the pandemonium that followed him around," JT said. "I just heard certain songs that I loved as a kid and I gravitated toward those songs. It just so happens that 99.79 percent of his songs are perfect. They're perfect songs. The other whatever percentage are works of art as well."

One work of art he's interested in checking out is "Michael Jackson's This Is It," the upcoming documentary about the singer's final days. "It looks like a more intimate view than anything we've seen," he said. "I'm sure it will be good."

While he's looking forward to catching MJ on the big screen, Timberlake said he doesn't try to invoke his idol in the recording booth — though he's pleasantly surprised when he finds a point of similarity in their music. "You don't imitate it, but you know when you have something that he had," he explained. "You could tell he was just excited about the music he was doing. That's the feeling that you get sometimes and that's when you feel like the king — but other than that, not so much!"

Did Justin Timberlake forget to get a haircut before his benefit concert in Las Vegas on Saturday night? How else to explain the presence of JT's curls in place of his usual close-cropped look?

"My hair is obviously growing out for a reason," Timberlake hinted to MTV News at the red carpet for the event.

That reason is "The Social Network," David Fincher's take on the creative forces — and salacious backstabbing — behind the founding of Facebook. Filming is set to begin soon in Boston, and Timberlake has been preparing for his role by skipping a trip to the barber shop and growing out his 'do.

He will be taking on the role of Sean Parker, a Napster co-founder who helped Mark Zuckerberg grow Facebook after its launch at Harvard. In the book on which the film is based, "The Accidental Billionaires," Parker is presented as an ego-swollen party boy, part Silicon Valley wheeler-and-dealer, part see-and-be-seen nightlife maven. After assuming the mantle of Facebook president, Parker was forced out after a falling out with founder Mark Zuckerberg in what was just one of the many personal squabbles and breakups shadowing the company in its early years.

"Zombieland" star Jesse Eisenberg will play Zuckerberg. "The West Wing" vet Aaron Sorkin adapted Ben Mezrich's "Accidental Billionaires" for the screen, with Kevin Spacey stepping into an executive producer role. The last time we spoke with Spacey, he didn't envision himself appearing onscreen, though he did star in another film based on a Mezrich book, last year's "21."

"To be honest, David Fincher is so ridiculously genius that we're all just following his lead," Timberlake said. "I think we want to tell the story, and I want to tell it through Sorkin's words and Fincher's eyes. I think Aaron did a lot of research on all of it. I don't want to speak for another actor, but I think the consensus for all of us is that we just want to make a great film."

Rihanna has been in the studio lately crafting her forthcoming album, working with everyone from Tricky Stewart, All-American Reject Tyson Ritter, Norwegian production team Stargate and Justin Timberlake. With fans eager for the new release, we got a few more details on what to expect from the tunes.

Timberlake spoke to MTV News Saturday at the second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert in Las Vegas, and told us his new songs with Rihanna are not just a rehash of what fans heard on Good Girl Gone Bad, but instead a whole new sound for the singer.

"I think she's got, like, a million people writing songs for her, but the ones that we worked on she's grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say," he explained. "So that's what we tried to do — craft things that are that of a young woman."

Timberlake added that because of the huge success of her last album, Rihanna wants to make sure she isn't pigeonholed into one sound or vibe. "She broke onto the scene so hard with the last record — to have that many songs on the charts is impressive," he said. "I think that the smartest thing she's doing is not trying to emulate what she did but move forward ... I've heard some of the stuff on the record and it's awesome."

In related Rihanna news, a rep for the singer confirmed that she shot her new video over the weekend in New York City, but declined to elaborate on concept details, title or producers for the record.

LAS VEGAS — When it comes to attracting big names for charity, Justin Timberlake has no trouble. Saturday night in Las Vegas saw the wide reach of JT's star power, with a diverse lineup of artists from Snoop Dogg to Taylor Swift taking part in his second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert, benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. While last year's show boasted many onstage collaborations, Justin had high hopes for this year's event — which included the aforementioned Doggfather and country queen, plus Alicia Keys, TLC, Timbaland, Ciara and Jay Sean.

"There were a lot of acts this year that weren't able to get here till today, so there weren't as many collabs as I had in my brain," Timberlake told MTV News during rehearsals. "But I think that's always the case, it's kind of like [when] you do an album and you write, like, 40 songs, and then 12 of them make it. ... But still, just having everyone out and getting to see them do their set — there are a couple of things that have never been performed onstage. There's a new song from [Timbaland] tonight, from his record that we did together. I think Snoop's doing a new song from his new record. So it's kinda cool for them too, because it's like perfect test marketing."

The night saw Justin wearing many hats (including a fedora) — acting as emcee, performer and maestro. He even kept the crowd updated with the Yankees/Angels score in between sets. But the fans were there for music, and they sure got their money's worth.

Jay Sean kicked off the night's performances, accompanied by U.K. beatbox champion MC Zani. The duo took a different take on the British singer's current hit, "Down," starting off with a beatbox intro and acoustic guitar, until launching into a full version of the song with Justin's band — which served as the house band for the whole evening.

Next up was Taylor Swift, and Justin assured everyone that there would be no Kanye-style stage crashing on his watch. "Don't worry, guys, I got security on the sides, so no one can come up and ruin her set," Timberlake told the crowd.

As soon as Swift hit the opening notes of "You Belong With Me," she had the crowd on their feet. Her raucous set was full of hair tosses and hip swings, impressive for the silver dress she performed in, dripping with what looked like diamonds. Her set got even more dazzling when she strapped on a shimmery acoustic guitar for "Love Story."

Justin introduced the next artist as "one of the greatest musicians of my generation." Alicia Keys then strutted across the stage in a stunning pair of red pumps, and took a seat at her piano to belt out "Doesn't Mean Anything." After the song, Alicia addressed the crowd.

"I wanna tell you a little about myself, where I'm from," she said, launching into the hook from "Empire State of Mind" then going right into "Fallin'," which sounded even more impressive with the house band's backup singers. The Mandalay Bay Events Center could barely contain the energy.

For the next performance, JT told the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, asses up, give it up for the one and only, legendary T-L-C!" Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas' first performance in six years sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the duo tore through a barrage of hits — "FanMail," "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," "What About Your Friends," "Baby Baby Baby," "Creep," "Waterfalls" and "No Scrubs." While founding member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is no longer with us, her presence was still in the room as her vocals were filled in by live performance footage on the screen.

The next performance brought the night's first on-stage collaboration. After Justin got the crowd moving to "Señorita," he welcomed Ciara onstage for "Love Sex Magic." The crowd stayed on their feet for the rest of Ciara's set — "Goodies" and "1, 2 Step."

Next up was Snoop Dogg, who performed "Drop It Like It's Hot," "What's My Name" and new single "Gangsta Love." Continuing the night's collaborations, Snoop told the crowd, "Since my homeboy Justin asked me to come out here tonight, I'm gonna ask him to come out right now." The guys broke into "Signs," doing a little two-step action.

Justin took the reins, jumping into a medly of "Summer" and "Chop Me Up," with Timbaland coming out to do his verse on "Chop." Tim stayed on stage for "Give It to Me," which had girls spilling into the aisles to dance. The duo then broke into the brand-new song that Justin had promised, the title of which they never announced. It features an anthemic chorus with the lyrics "Turn me on now" and a breakdown that repeats "What's your name?/ What's your number?/ I'm glad I came, so you can take my order."

Two hours into the show, it was time for Justin to take over. JT launched into an acrobatic mash-up of hits — both his and other artists'. It started with an acoustic rendition of "Like I Love You," then transitioned to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" during the "Like I Love You" chorus. Next was Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody," mixed with the lyrics of "Cry Me a River," then going back to the KOL chorus. "Lovestoned" followed, blended with Coldplay's "Viva la Vida."

The night seemingly was coming to an end as Justin sat down at a piano for a heartfelt performance of "What Goes Around ... /... Comes Around," but although he announced it was his last song, he changed his mind.

"I'm in the mood," he told the Vegas crowd. He shouted to his band to freestyle on the next song, and they settled on "Until the End of Time."

The show ended just shy of midnight, capping off another successful year for Justin and his charity. Honors are especially due for Justin's bandmembers, who spent nearly three hours on stage backing up the night's performers.

Justin Timberlake was the latest victim on "The Jay Leno" show Monday night. When the singer checked in with Leno from Callaway Golf Center in Las Vegas, where he was busy hosting a tournament, Leno used his "Ten @ Ten" segment to grill him about everything from sports to the Jonas Brothers.

Asked what his nickname was growing up, Timberlake admitted that he was called a "sissy" a lot by the guys on the football team. But the superstar got the last laugh, joking, "Yeah, yeah, it's fine. They're running Dick's Sporting Goods now. I don't care."

Leno then asked the former Mouseketeer if he would sing the "Mickey Mouse Club" theme song. "Haha. OK. Now it's time to say goodbye to all our company. I can't believe I'm doing this by the way," Timberlake sang, ad-libbing, "M-I-C — see you real soon. K-E-Y — Why? Because I got paid to! M-O-U-S-E."

JT continued to be a good sport when asked to talk about the first time he met his idol, football player Peyton Manning, at a charity bowling match. "I just walked up to him," he recalled. "I was still a teenager at the time. I was really excited to meet him. ... I was like, 'I watched you at UT, and I'm from Tennessee ... and congratulations on your career,' and he said, 'That's great, kid, size 11 1/2.' So, I think he thought I worked at the bowling alley. But the best part of the story is, I didn't know what to do, so I went and got him some bowling shoes."

And there were even some boy-band questions on the table. Asked who his favorite Jonas Brother is, either because he wanted to be diplomatic or because he really didn't know, Justin quipped, "It's a toss-up between Sleepy Jonas and Bashful Jonas; although Dopey Jonas is creeping his way up."

Timberlake was more honest when listing his phobias, however: "Snakes, sharks, possible in-laws."

Timberlake demonstrated the sense of humor that helped him win his second Emmy for hosting "Saturday Night Live" this year, joking about how he likes his (golf) balls clean, saying that Joey Fatone asks him for money every other week and claiming that he was actually nude from the waist down during the interview. But he really seemed to enjoy relating his funniest fan encounter.

"I recently had a guy come up to me, this really big guy, and he said, 'Hey, man, can you sign this autograph for me? It's for my girlfriend, it's not for me,' " Timberlake said. "I said let me get her name on it just to personalize it. ... And he said, 'Craig.' "

It's official: Jesse Eisenberg will play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network," a film based on the creation of the social networking site. But he's not the only rumored name now confirmed to be in the film. Variety reports that Justin Timberlake will also star in the flick alongside Eisenberg.

Timberlake will play Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who became Facebook's founding president. Andrew Garfield has been cast as Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who had a falling out with Zuckerberg as the site became a financial success. The crew, along with director David Fincher, will begin filming next month in Boston before moving production to Los Angeles.

One of the film's executive producers, Kevin Spacey, spoke to MTV News recently about the flick, speculating that it would begin filming before the end of this year, although at that time the details, including who would be directing and starring in the movie, had yet to be worked out.

Spacey did note that he was "enormously excited" about the film. "Great story for people that don't really know how it happened," he said. "Very filmic, very modern, very cool."

Meanwhile, even as late as last week, Eisenberg wouldn't confirm to MTV News that he was tackling the Zuckerberg role. Instead he opted to say only that he was still rumored to be attached to the film, which was penned by "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin. At the junket for "Zombieland," he said, "They are rumors. That is true."

Between guesting on Jay-Z's "Run This Town," appearing in Kanye West's "Paranoid" video and being photographed while out on the town, Rihanna has certainly been in the headlines recently. And as she continues work on her next LP, some of her collaborators have been talking about their work with her — most recently, Justin Timberlake and British producers Chase & Status.

"The stuff we've come up with in the studio, it's the next step for her. It's a little more grown-up. It's got some edge to it," Timberlake said in an interview during E!'s red-carpet show prior to Sunday's Emmy Awards. The two previously collaborated on "Rehab," from Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad LP.

The songstress has also enlisted U.K. dance producers Chase & Status, who talked about her professionalism and sense of direction with the BBC. "On one track she came up with some cool melodies and cool ideas, the kind of vibe she wanted. This album for her is just about what she likes and what she's into and what she wants," said Saul Milton, a.k.a. Chase.

The duo have spent "two sessions, three or four weeks in total" working with the singer, and Milton noted that Rihanna is very direct about what she likes — and what she doesn't.

"When she doesn't like something she'll let you know. When she likes something she'll let you know as well," Milton said. "If she's not into the vibe she'll be like, 'Nope, I don't think it's for me.' Or if something is a bit too bolshie [esoteric], she's like, 'That's not what I'm trying to push right now.'

"We just spent a lot of time with the writers and with her and she's just a really cool girl, down to earth."

Milton also recalled how he found out that Rihanna was interested in working with the duo.

"I actually got a call from Rihanna at 6 a.m. one day, before we even met up, saying how she loves the tracks and that she can't wait to work with us," he said, adding, "That was a big realization that it's happening!"

At press time, a spokesperson for Rihanna had not responded to MTV News' requests for confirmation and more information.

All-American Reject Tyson Ritter and Norwegian production team Stargate have also spoken about the songs they've worked on with Rihanna in recent months.

Even though he wasn't at Sunday night's 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Kanye West still loomed large over the event. While critically acclaimed TV shows like "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" were scooping up repeat wins, jokes about West's stage-busting outburst at the previous week's VMAs were par for the course.

Among the surprise winners were Australian actress Toni Collette, who beat out "30 Rock" star Tina Fey for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as a woman with multiple personalities in Showtime's "United States of Tara" (written by "Juno" and "Jennifer's Body" scribe Diablo Cody). Collette was almost upstaged, however, by fellow nominee Sarah Silverman, who grabbed the spotlight by sporting a fake mustache during the reading of the nominees and breaking awards-show etiquette by pretending to be put out when she didn't make the cut.

"30 Rock" nabbed the Best Comedy Series award for the third year in a row, beating out such buzzed-about contenders as "Flight of the Conchords," "Weeds," host Neil Patrick Harris' "How I Met Your Mother" and the first animated series to get the nod in nearly 50 years, "Family Guy." Fey's co-star, Alec Baldwin, also took home Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as network boss Jack Donaghy. "I'd trade this to look like him," Baldwin joked of presenter Rob Lowe.

Justin Timberlake showed up to collect his previously awarded Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for his guest-stint on "Saturday Night Live." This was the first time "SNL" hosts have been eligible for that award. He took home the prize for, among other memorable moments, his unforgettable ode to cougars, "Motherlover." He, of course, also dropped a Kanye reference while picking up the trophy, telling fellow Guest Actor in a Comedy Series winner Tina Fey, "Imma let you finish."

"Samantha Who" star Christina Applegate joked on the preshow, "I just have to wonder: Who's gonna pull a Kanye?" She was followed a few minutes later by a similar joke from "Survivor" host Jeff Probst.

Speaking of repeats, the 1960s advertising drama "Mad Men" snagged the Best Drama Series award for a second year in a row, though its cast was shut out in the acting categories and it won in just three of the 16 categories for which it was nominated. Another repeat winner was Glenn Close, who took home Best Actress in a Drama for her take on a tough lawyer in the FX drama "Damages," a role Close called "the character of my lifetime."

Former "Malcolm in the Middle" dad Bryan Cranston also made it a twofer, winning Best Actor in a Drama Series for "Breaking Bad," in which he plays a terminally ill chemistry teacher-turned-crystal-meth-cooker. Another repeat winner was "Amazing Race," which beat the competition in the Reality Competition Program for the seventh straight year. "The Daily Show" also made it seven straight with a win for Outstanding Variety Series.

Michael Emerson, who plays the creepy, not-to-be-trusted Benjamin Linus on "Lost," won for a second time in the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama category, eight years after first taking the award for his guest work on "The Practice."

There were a few fresh faces on the stage, though, including Kristin Chenoweth — who, like host Harris, will be a guest judge on the upcoming season of "American Idol" — who won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the canceled "Pushing Daisies." Chenoweth, who was later taken to the hospital for a migraine-related incident, joked during her acceptance speech, "I'm unemployed now, so I'd like to be on 'Mad Men.' I also like 'The Office' and '24.' " Another first-timer was actress Cherry Jones, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as the president on "24."

The show opened with Harris doing a song and dance number called "Put Down the Remote," in which he pleaded with viewers to stick with the show after last year's Emmys brought the lowest ratings in history thanks to an ill-informed decision to have a rotating group of reality-show stars host the program. Harris not only proved his "Dr. Horrible" singing chops were still strong, he also kept the evening moving with a series of crisp jokes and comically uncomfortable exchange with his competition in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Jon Cryer.

After Cryer won his first trophy in four tries for his work in the popular "Two and a Half Men," Harris dialed him up on the big screen while Cryer was talking to the press backstage and needled him about the win, making him double-check the envelope to make sure it really had his name in it. "I used to think that awards were just shallow tokens of momentary popularity," Cryer joked during his acceptance speech. "But now — [I realize] they are the only true measure of a person's real worth as a human being."

Viewers voted online for the Breakthrough Moment of the Year, which was awarded to a scene from HBO's vampire and shape-shifters drama, "True Blood."

The night's biggest winner was the public television mini-series "Little Dorritt," an adaptation of a Charles Dickens serial novel that aired on PBS and won seven Emmys over the course of the night, including Best Miniseries. Other winners included "Wizards of Waverly Place" for Best Children's Program; the Harris-starring "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" for Best Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program; MTV's 2008 Video Music Awards for Best Art Direction for a Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming; "South Park" for Best Animated Program and Bruce Gowers of "American Idol" for Best Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

Even when the winners weren't household names, such as veteran actor Ken Howard, who won for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries for his work in the HBO drama "Grey Gardens," their speeches touched on universal themes. "This is very encouraging," first-time nominee Howard said, praying that he wouldn't be "interrupted by congressmen or rappers."

The incomparable Dan Castellaneta won Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for his many characters on "The Simpsons," including Homer Simpson and Krusty the Clown, beating out fellow cast members Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer, as well as "Family Guy" boss Seth MacFarlane and voice of "Robot Chicken," Seth Green.
