More than 50,000 people filed into Edinburgh, Scotland's Murrayfield Stadium on Wednesday for the last of Bob Geldof's momentous Live 8 concerts, organized behind a single global mission: to raise awareness and support for the various social and economic issues facing Africa.

The postscript to the 10 concerts staged in cities all over the world on Saturday (see "Jay-Z, U2, Madonna, Pink Floyd Deliver Live 8 Highlights"), Wednesday's climactic finale featured Snow Patrol, James Brown, Travis, Annie Lennox, the Thrills, Feeder, Embrace, Texas, Wet Wet Wet, McFly, Neneh Cherry, Sugababes, and Youssou N'Dour, in addition to several guest speakers — supermodel Claudia Schiffer and actor George Clooney among them, according to BBC News.

All of the free event's participants took the stage as part of an eleventh-hour push to urge the leaders of the world's eight largest national economies — who convened yesterday for a three-day summit — to devise feasible methods by which Africa's epidemic poverty can be mitigated (see "The Road To Live 8: Why Are We Here?"). The final Live 8 gig unfolded just 40 miles away from this year's annual G8 caucus (see "What Is The G8, Anyway?").

U2 frontman Bono — who, along with Geldof, met face-to-face with some of the G8 leaders, and told Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin his refusal to pledge more foreign aid was "infuriating" — introduced former South African president Nelson Mandela, who, in a recorded message, told the assembled mass that the world needed to "work to make poverty history."

"Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great," Mandela continued. "You can be that generation. You have that opportunity."

According to The Associated Press, Geldof also addressed the massive crowd: "On Friday, there will be a great silence across the world while we await the verdict of eight men. Is [Africa] to live or die?"

In addition to orchestrating the Live 8 concerts, Geldof urged millions to march on Edinburgh on Wednesday, as part of the Make Poverty History movement; a few hundred did show, and an estimated 200,000 staged an anti-poverty march in the Scottish city over the weekend.

With Phantom Planet, the Thrills and the Donnas as their co-pilots, Maroon 5 will hit the road for two months on the fifth annual 2005 Honda Civic Tour.

Maroon 5 will headline the trek, which begins March 11 in Universal City, California.

"This is the first headlining U.S. tour we've done in a long time," bassist Mickey Madden said Thursday at a press conference in West Hollywood, California, announcing the outing. "We're playing some of the biggest places we've ever played, which is very exciting. And we're taking out some bands that we really like and who are good friends. We grew up with Phantom Planet here in L.A. The Donnas add a nice variety. And the Thrills are a band we really like. Our crowds tend to be receptive to who we take out."

As has been the case with Civic Tours in the past, which have featured such bands as Blink-182, Incubus, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Everclear and Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5 will be accompanied on the tour by a car they designed. The band has chosen special custom features for the environmentally friendly Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda Civic Coupe, which will be showcased at each venue. Fans will also have the opportunity to win the customized cars.

Emphasizing their commitment to environmental protection, Maroon 5 designed a Web site as part of their participation in the tour, packed with information on how fans can help conserve the planet's natural resources ("Did you know you can run a TV set for three hours with the energy saved from recycling one aluminum can!"). They also provide links to various environmental organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Tickets go on sale beginning February 5, though fans can log on to the tour's Web site for special pre-sale information.

The trek will delay Maroon 5's follow-up to Songs About Jane, which the band will now record after the outing is wrapped. "We're extremely anxious to get back in the studio," Madden said. "We have a lot of songs written that are unfinished, but it's hard to write on the road" (see "Maroon 5 Dying To Get Back In The Studio To Record More Songs About Girls").

In the meantime, Maroon 5 are looking for an outlet for Kanye West's remix of "This Love."

"It's got a '70s soul, gospel sort of vibe," Madden said. "It's out there to be found now on the Internet. We're not sure how to release it exactly. It's a remix, but it's not a hip-hop remix, so it couldn't have a place on hip-hop radio."

Nelly Tops Nelly On Billboard Albums Chart

The closest competition Nelly will face on next week's Billboard albums chart comes from the St. Lunatic leader himself. Having simultaneously released two albums last week, the St. Louis MC has a lock on the #1 and #2 spots.

It's Suit that trumps Sweat, by more than 54,000 copies, according to SoundScan. The album featuring the smash single "My Place" (with Jaheim) sold more than 395,000 copies to take the top slot, while its companion moved more than 341,000 copies on the strength of the suggestive single "Flap Your Wings."

Nelly's two-album total barely pushes past the first-week sales of his last album, Nellyville, which in June 2002 also debuted at #1, with 23,000 fewer copies.

Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying will drop a notch to run a distant third, with more than 121,000 copies sold. It'll be followed by Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company, which also takes a step back, to #4. The late soul pioneer's duets album sold more than 113,000 copies.

For the fourth week straight, the immovable object that is Now That's What I Call Music! 16 will remain at #5. The more than 100,000 copies it sold last week brings its eight-week total up to 1.8 million. Ashlee Simpson will also hold on to her old place at #6, as Autobiography tacked on another 75,000 to its total.

Although it sold slightly fewer copies last week than the week prior, Maroon 5's Songs About Jane managed to climb back into the top 10 by sidling up three spots to #8 and moving more than 63,000 copies. Usher, too, will make some forward progress, as Confessions takes a two-step shimmy up to #10, with more than 61,000 copies.

The remainder of next week's top 10 finds last week's top album, Alan Jackson's What I Do, dropping to #7, with more than 71,000 copies sold; and Anita Baker's My Everything moving from #4 to #9 with more than 63,000 copies sold.

Aside from the Nellys, the next new album to make the chart is from heavy-metal vets Megadeth. The band's 10th album will land at #18. Two notches later, Los Angeles' Irish punks Flogging Molly will place at #20 with Within a Mile of Home.

While the single "1985" is keeping Bowling for Soup part of the pop vernacular a year and a half after earning a Grammy nomination for their last album, 2002's Drunk Enough to Dance, it didn't immediately translate into massive album sales for the Wichita Falls, Texas, quartet. Their fourth album, A Hangover You Don't Deserve, will debut at #37.

Other notable debuts on next week's chart include Tears for Fears' reunion album, and first in nine years, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, at #46; the TV series soundtrack Will & Grace: Let the Music Out! at #57; electronica act the Prodigy's Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned at #62; Gov't Mule's Deja Voodoo at #88; the Faint's Wet From Birth at #99; and the Thrills' Let's Bottle Bohemia at #153.

Are radio programmers out of touch with what listeners want to hear? Of the 10 top-selling singles of 2003, only a couple were radio hits. Here's the list, according to recently released data: Clay Aiken's "This Is the Night"/"Bridge Over Troubled Water" at #1 with 948,155 copies, followed by Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings"/"Superstar" (728,243), Kid Rock's "Picture" (392,489), "American Idol" finalists' "God Bless the USA" (309,655), Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" (141,360), Korn's "Did My Time" (132,967), the Eagles' "Hole in the World" (121,376), Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain" (116,785), Aaliyah's "Miss You" (98,358) and Jewel's "Intuition" (96,142). ...

While finishing up an as-yet-untitled book of poetry, former Smashing Pumpkins/ Zwan frontman Billy Corgan has begun working on his forthcoming solo debut with some help from Bon Harris, a founding member of the industrial dance band Nitzer Ebb. ... A coffee-table book celebrating the 20-year legacy of Pacific Northwest punks the Melvins is set for a March 2 release. "Neither Here, Nor There" features comments from the bandmembers and their friends and includes a compilation CD. After two decades, the band is still kicking, too. A short West Coast tour is in the works. ...

Gov't Mule will open eight dates on Kid Rock's upcoming tour. In the meantime, the band has started working on its first studio album since bassist Allen Woody died in August 2000.

The Pharcyde's Imani and Bootie Brown have reunited for the group's first album in four years. Humboldt Beginnings, featuring the single "Choices," is due in April and will be promoted with a tour. ... Hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari is working on her debut LP for Universal Records. So far Ari, who plays on about 90 percent of Kanye West's College Dropout LP, has tracks completed with Anthony Hamilton, Scarface and West. ...

Iron Maiden experienced luck of the Spinal Tap variety during their stint at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. Tuesday night's show had to be canceled because the venue accidentally booked the band for the same time it had scheduled a Xerox convention. And on Saturday evening, Maiden had to cut their set short because someone poured a beer on the soundboard, causing it to short circuit. ... Metallica have added a second night in Los Angeles to their lengthy North American tour. The band will now play the L.A. Forum on March 5 and 6. Tickets for the second show will go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. ... Swedish new wave-leaning quintet the Sounds are heading Stateside for their first U.S. headlining tour, starting February 15 in Milwaukee and ending March 28 in Atlanta. Along for the 30-date trek will be Kill Hannah and Ima Robot. ...

New Releases: Grammy Nominees 2004, Ani DiFranco, Dizzee Rascal, The Thrills, Amel Larrieux & More

The music industry is just coming out of its winter slumber and the timing couldn't be better: Grammy ramp-up is upon us. Getting in on the act is Grammy Nominees 2004, a disc whose track list reads like a Now That's What I Call Music! compilation. But, because of the sole inclusion of a Michael McDonald song, isn't. On the album you'll find Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love," Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River," 50 Cent's "In Da Club," Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You," Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom" and Sean Paul's "Gimme the Light."

One-girl revolution Ani DiFranco returns to her roots on Educated Guess, where she performs (and writes and records and produces) every song herself. Meanwhile, songbird Amel Larrieux becomes a Bravebird this week alongside the "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!" soundtrack, featuring Liz Phair, John Mayer and Five for Fighting; new Wu-Tang protégés Northstar and their debut album, Bobby Digital Presents ... Northstar; and King Cobra's self-titled EP.

Also out this week are two notable DVDs: Belle and Sebastian's Fans Only and "The Complete First Season" of "Punk'd."
