Cake Evokes .38 Special For "Let Me Go"

Cake has just wrapped its summer touring schedule, and will take the next few months off so frontman John McCrea can work on the pilot episode of his TV debate show, "Freedom of Speech."

In the meantime, Cake has just issued "Let Me Go" as the third single off its newest album, "Prolonging the Magic," a song that McCrea said was inspired, in a way, by a certain '80s country-rock group.

"It's a pretty simple song about attractions and repulsion," offered Cake's John McCrea, "and people not wanting to be a member of a club that would accept them as a member. And in the case of gender relations, this [also] seems to be the case. So when someone is letting someone go, that is actually making things seem more favorable in the relationship."

"It's kind of like 'Hold on Loosely,' but don't let go by .38 Special in a lot of ways," he added, "so I just tried to write my own .38 Special song." [RealAudio]

Cake won't return to the road until September, when the group will play this year's Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Washington on September 4.
