On a night when late flashy salsa queen Celia Cruz was honored with an all-star tribute, it was singer/songwriter Juanes who sparked the most fireworks at the fourth annual Latin Grammy awards.

During the show Wednesday night at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, the one-named Colombian sensation swept the major categories, winning in all five in which he was nominated.

Juanes took the big three: Record, Album and Song of the Year ("Es Por Ti"), as well as Best Rock Song ("Mala Gente") and Best Rock Solo Vocal album for Un Dia Normal, his second solo album. Already a four-time Latin Grammy winner before the program, Juanes, 31, became one of the most celebrated artists in the show's short history.

The program opened with a tribute to Cruz, who died in July at age 77 (see "Queen Of Salsa" Celia Cruz Dead"). The medley featured Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony shouting Cruz's signature phrase, "azucar!," and singing a number of her most famous songs alongside such Latin legends as Willie Colón, Johnny Pacheco, Arturo Sandoval and Oscar D'Leon. Just last year, Cruz opened the show with one of her typically over-the-top performances before winning an award for Best Salsa Album.

Miami's Bacilos won Best Tropical Song for their humorous account of trying to make it, "Mi Primer Millon," which they performed on the broadcast. Band leader Sergio George came into the awards with six nominations, but was overshadowed by Juanes, though Bacilos also scored the Best Pop Album by a group for Caraluna.

Spain's curly-haired David Bisbal, who came to prominence last year after winning Spain's answer to "American Idol," "Operation Triumph," was named Best New Artist for his album Corazón Latino. Rockers Molotov won the Best Video Award for their clip "Frijolero," and Cuban guitarist and Buena Vista Social Club member Ibrahim Ferrer won the award for Best Traditional Tropical Album for Buenos Hermanos.

Though such crossover artists as Thalia, Shakira and Luis Miguel went home empty-handed, Enrique Iglesias represented, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Album for his Spanish-language effort, Quizás.

In addition to performances from Thalia, Molotov and Ricky Martin, the show aimed for a broader audience by pairing Latin stars with more mainstream acts, such as Juanes and the Black Eyed Peas and "American Idol" singer Kelly Clarkson with Brazil's Alexandre Pires.

For the second year in a row, the inclusion of Cuban artists in the show was shrouded in controversy. Though Miami — hosting the Latin Grammys for the first time — has a large Cuban population and 12 Cuban artists were nominated, a small contingent of protesters gathered outside the venue to demonstrate both against and for the nomination of artists from the communist country.

According to reports, none of the Cuban acts was able to obtain visas in time to attend the show. Cuban hip-hop band Orishas, who won the Best Rap/Hip Hop Album award for Emigrante and who now live in Europe, did not attend the show as a sign of solidarity with their fellow Cuban musicians.

Miami was to host the second edition of the show in 2001, but the event was moved to Los Angeles after anti-Castro demonstrators threatened to protest the show; it was ultimately canceled due to the 9-11 terror attacks (see "Latin Grammy Winners Will Get Trophies But No Ceremony").

Composed of all new songs — a rarity in the soundtrack format — the audio accompaniment to the film "Bad Boys II" will land at #1 on next week's Billboard albums chart.

Singles "La-La-La" by Jay-Z and "Shake Ya Tailfeather" by the superstar collaboration of Nelly and P. Diddy propelled last week's sales to more than 324,000 copies, according to SoundScan. The LP also features contributions from Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent (see "P. Diddy Finally Makes Da Band Debut On 'Bad Boys II' Soundtrack").

Ludacris protégé Chingy follows the soundtrack with his debut, Jackpot, which sold more than 156,000 copies. With the single "Right Thurr" and songs such as "He's Herre" and "Wurrs My Cash," Chingy is poised to punctuate the summer with the St. Louis-speak introduced last year by Nelly's "Hot in Herre."

Two country acts round out next week's top-10 chart debuts. Brooks & Dunn's eighth album, Red Dirt Road, will take the #4 spot, having sold more than 114,000 copies; while Pat Green's Wave on Wave, which features a guest appearance by living legend Willie Nelson, will place at #10 with more than 52,000 in sales.

The top LP of the last two weeks, Ashanti's Chapter II, will fall to #5 (108,000), allowing Beyoncé's Dangerously in Love to surpass it for the moment in the chart's battle of the divas. The "Crazy in Love" singer will drop from #2 to #3 with more than 130,000 copies sold.

The rest of the top 10 will find Evanescence's Fallen dropping three spots to #6 (73,000); 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' slipping a couple of notches to #7 (67,000); Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father moving four spots down to #8 (63,000); and, Norah Jones' Come Away With Me, taking a step back to #9 (61,000) with its more than 6.6 million copies.

Mariah Carey pal Da Brat makes her presence known at #17 with her fourth LP, Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz. Her "In Love Wit Chu," which features Cherish, helped the album sell nearly 39,000 copies in its first week in stores.

After three albums for Jive Records, Keith Murray's first and last LP for the Def Jam label, He's Keith Murray, will debut at #40; while Macy Gray's third album, The Trouble With Being Myself, the follow-up to 2001's The Id, will place at #44.

Staind's 14 Shades of Grey debuted at #1 when it was released in late May, only to fall from the chart's upper reaches soon after. But while the band's fourth album may be down, it's not out. The follow-up to 2001's super-successful Break the Cycle has sold an average of about 35,000 copies per week while steadily advancing in the last four weeks, moving from #28 to #21. The slow and steady pace can be attributed to the LP's second single, "So Far Away."

Good Charlotte's The Young & the Hopeless also made some significant strides. The 10-month-old LP with four singles to its name will move from #35 to #29, while its weekly sales increased by more than 3,000 copies.

Mexican singer Thalia's English-language debut will take a major plunge on next week's chart. Following a #11 debut, the LP will drop 50 spots after sales diminished by more than 60 percent.

With the passing of salsa singer Celia Cruz last week, her best-of collection Hits Mix will re-enter the chart at #163 with a weekly sales increase of more than 5,000 copies.

Other notable debuts on next week's chart include the Used's odds-and-ends collection Maybe Memories at #84; 1970s funksters War's The Very Best of War at #133; pop-punks RX Bandits' Resignation at #148; Jacksonville, Florida, rockers Shinedown's debut, Leave a Whisper, at #159; Pearl Jam's latest live LP, recorded at State College, Pennsylvania, on May 3, at #169; and New York Yankee Bernie Williams' Journey Within at #175.

Tuesday morning's announcement of the Latin Grammy nominations revealed that songwriter/producer Sergio George led the pack with six, but a string of familiar one-named stars made their presence felt as well. Shakira, Enrique, Thalia and Juanes all
got nominations for the fourth annual awards show, which will be held in Miami on September 3.

George was honored for his work on Miami rock group Bacilos' Caraluna album. Four-time Latin Grammy-winning Colombian singer/songwriter Juanes follows close behind George with five nominations. Among Juanes' nods were Record and Song of the Year for "Es Por Ti" and Best Rock Solo Album for Un Dia Normal.

Singer Thalia's self-titled album is up for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, while Enrique Iglesias' Quizas is in the running for Best Male Pop Vocal Album. Shakira was honored for her songwriting in the Best Rock Song category for "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)."

Artists competing for Record of the Year include Bacilos, Juanes, Luis Miguel, Molotov and Tribalistas. Novelty act Las Ketchup managed to sneak into the Best Pop Album By a Duo or Group With Vocal category, while Jaguares, Mana, Molotov, Jarabe de Palo and Rabanes will face off for the hotly contested Best Rock Album By a Duo or Group With Vocal award.

On the day when Celia Cruz was buried in New York (see
" 'Queen Of Salsa' Celia Cruz Dead"), Latin Grammy organizers announced that a tribute to the "Queen of Salsa" will be held at the awards ceremony. The show will be held in Miami for the first time, two years after threats of protests by Cuban exile groups forced the event to move from Florida to Los Angeles; that show was later canceled following the September 11 terrorist attacks (see "Latin Grammy Winners Will Get Trophies But No Ceremony").

For the second week in a row, R&B vixens Ashanti and Beyoncé will gallop neck and neck to a photo finish on the Billboard albums chart, and once again, Ashanti will edge her out.

On next week's chart, the Murder Inc. chanteuse's Chapter II will be listed as having sold 135,000 copies, besting the Destiny's Child singer's Dangerously in Love by fewer than 4,000 copies, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (July 16). This narrows the gap from last week, when Ashanti beat Beyoncé by about 10,000.

Almost all of last week's top 10 artists will remain near the top of the chart, though half will shift positions.

Diaphanous metal quartet Evanescence will climb four places to #3, matching their highest position since the March release of their debut, Fallen. The group sold just over 72,000 records last week, an increase of more than 3,000 from the week before. An appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and the band's second single, "Going Under," impacting at radio could account for the sales jump.

Luther Vandross' new album, Dance With My Father, will dip one slot to #4 with 68,000 in sales, a numeric decrease of more than 33,000. 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' hangs in at #5, but drops almost 10,000 in sales to 66,000, echoing the continuing chartwide sales decline.

The bottom half of the top 10 starts with Michelle Branch, whose second record, Hotel Paper, falls two more positions to #6 with sales of over 64,000. Metallica's St. Anger slips one spot to #7 and drops almost 9,000 in sales to 62,000 despite the successful launch of their Summer Sanitarium Tour.

The final three top positions will be filled by Norah Jones, whose Come Away With Me sold more than 61,000, bringing her total past the 6.5 million mark; Trace Adkins, whose Vol. 1 Greatest Hits will debut at #9; and Cher, whose Very Best of Cher will climb eight positions to re-enter the top 10, largely because of her farewell tour, which goes on and on and on ...

The second-biggest debut on the chart is by Mexican actor and singer Thalia, who married former Sony Music head Tommy Mottola in 2000. Her self-titled album will enter at #11.

The Ataris will take a huge leap up the charts. Their fifth album, So Long, Astoria, will climb 23 positions to #79 thanks to the success of their punked-up cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer." Celine Dion's One Heart will vault 16 positions to #28. And Black Eyed Peas' second disc, Elephunk, will climb seven places to #34.

One of the biggest chart slides will again go to Three 6 Mafia's Da Unbreakables, which will drop 11 slots to #21. Another hip-hop act, Gang Starr, will face a similar fate with their new disc, Ownerz, which will plummet 22 notches to #62.

One way to make it in this business is by having a great voice. Another is to marry a big-cheese music mogul. Latin pop singer Thalia has both bases covered.

With nearly a decade's worth of albums in her wake, the Mexican singer/actress, who wed former Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola in 2000, is dropping her first English language album, Thalia. Thalia, following in the crossover footsteps of Shakira and the aisle-walking ones of Mariah Carey, is poised to break in the States thanks to a lead afforded by the single "I Want You," featuring Fat Joe.

With momentum of the quirky, cute and incredibly infectious "Cameltoe" behind them, Brooklyn quintet Fannypack have released their debut, So Stylistic. Three female singers and two male DJs using old-school beats and rhymes as hot as the weather, Fannypack may have created the party album of the summer (see " 'Cameltoe' Making An Impression On Booty Shakers, Bagel Buyers").

While it's not entirely new Used material, the Utah quartet's Maybe Memories features live tracks and outtakes from the Used's self-titled debut as well as the demos of unreleased tracks "It Could Be a Good Excuse" and "Zero Mechanism." The CD/DVD package also includes more than 100 minutes of home video footage and the band's four videos (see "The Used Offer Old 'Memories' In New CD/DVD Package").

Beth Orton takes on a cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," which is then followed by the original, on the soundtrack to "How To Deal." Sky Sweetman's "Billy S.," as wall as tracks from the Donnas, Flaming Lips, John Mayer and Liz Phair are also included.

Wu-Tang associate Killah Priest returns to the pulpit with Black August, the rapper's fourth album, and former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth is out to prove that he can still kick it in spandex on his seventh solo album, Diamond Dave.

Winners of the second annual Latin Grammy Awards will receive their trophies, but the ceremony — originally scheduled for last Tuesday — will not be restaged, the Recording Academy announced Friday.

Academy officials, who had said shortly after the terrorist attacks that the show was canceled and would not be rescheduled, spent this week reconsidering the idea with their partners. They determined it would be "simply impossible" for the show to go on, Michael Greene, CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement.

The academy is still determining how to announce and award the winners.

"We all are emotionally devastated by recent events, as is everyone, and we're disappointed that we will not be able to give this year's deserving nominees their chance to show the world what we already know about them — that they are world-class musical artists," Greene said.

Artists who had been scheduled to appear at the Los Angeles ceremony included co-host Christina Aguilera, Santana, Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Lopez, Luis Miguel, Juanes, Jon Secada, Thalía, Marc Anthony, Alejandro Sanz and Destiny's Child.

Christina Aguilera will co-host the second annual Latin Grammy Awards next week, and Marc Anthony and Destiny's Child have signed on as performers.

Aguilera is nominated in the Record of the Year category for the song "Pero Me Acuerdo de Ti" and is in the running for Best Female Pop Vocal Album with Mi Reflejo. Her co-host for the evening will be actor Jimmy Smits, who also co-hosted last year's event.

"Bootylicious" trio Destiny's Child will join previously announced performer Alejandro Sanz on one of the Spanish singer's tunes.

Just three weeks before show time, the Recording Academy moved the ceremony from Miami to Los Angeles, citing concerns that anti-Castro protesters would disrupt the show. More than 100 Cuban-exile groups planned to protest the ceremony's inclusion of artists from the communist country (see "Latin Grammys Relocated To Avoid Miami Protests"). The show will be held at the Forum in Inglewood, California, on September 11 and will be broadcast on CBS from 9-11 p.m. (ET/PT).

Gloria Estefan, last year's co-host and big winner, has said she is upset by the move and will not attend the event. Other previously announced stars scheduled to appear include Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Lopez, Luis Miguel, Juanes, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jon Secada, Thalía, and Alejandro and Vicente Fernandez. Additional performers and presenters will be announced.
