JC Chasez may be Schizophrenic these days, but it seems to be working in his favor. The 'NSYNC member's solo debut album gets Chasez close to the ladies on the singles "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" and "Some Girls (Dance With Women)."

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante releases another solo album this week. The ambient Shadows Collide With People drops alongside Liars' second proper, and darker, album, They Were Wrong So We Drowned. Inspired by folklore, fairy tales and witch hunts, the album opens with the track "Brocken Witch," which takes its name from Walpurgisnacht, the night that witches take their broomsticks out for a spin on Germany's Brocken mountain.

Tony Touch's Piece Maker II features the embarrassment of riches in the form of Snoop, P. Diddy, Method Man, Redman, N.O.R.E. and Fat Joe. Meanwhile, Young Gunz's Tough Luv is another cameo jackpot. Chingy, Cam'ron, Juelz Santana and Beanie Sigel all roll through the album.

Error, a band featuring members of Bad Religion, Nine Inch Nails and Dillinger Escape Plan, and their self-titled album share shelf space this week with Orgy's Punk Statik Paranoia and Cannibal Corpse's Wretched Spawn.

And, finally, from the cutesy-free title files, Royce da 5'9" reminds us that Death Is Certain.

Tantric's Pain, Pal Nuno Bettencourt Help Create 'Hey Now'

Post-grungers Tantric had already been in the studio for two lengthy recording sessions for their new album, After We Go, when their label insisted they return and try again. In a huff the band went in and worked on three more tracks.

Not only did the new session produce current single "Hey Now," it also birthed the title track and a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain."

"Unfortunately, pain makes you interesting," frontman Hugo Ferreira said of the ordeal. "This record was a long and painful process to make. We were under a lot of pressure from our label to spit something out."

"Hey Now" sounds like it was churned out under duress. Like the songs from the band's self-titled 2001 album, the music is filled with vocal harmonies reminiscent of Alice in Chains, and folksy acoustic guitar strumming balanced by distorted rock riffs. However, the track is colored with aggressive crunch and the lyrics are more injured and bitter: "Hear me but you don't listen/ Or you don't want to/ You're just saving yourself."

"It's kind of a 'You did me wrong, so f--- you' song," Ferreira explained, implying that the lyrics are about someone in the band's inner circle. "It's like, 'Hey, you promised me something. You said you were my friend. You said you would be there. You said you wouldn't lie. And then you're all full of sh--.' So it's about finding reasons to be involved with that person or to even want to work with them again or make them a part of your life, but sometimes you don't really have a choice."

Ferreira wrote "Hey Now" with ex-Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. The two grew up in the same small town of Hudson, Massachusetts, and their moms were friends, so Ferreira would go to Nuno's house to hang with his nephews, and Nuno would let Hugo play his guitars.

"When I was in high school, and Extreme were coming out, he was pretty much the city's idol," Ferreira recalled. "So, fast forward 12 years. It had been a long time since I had seen him, and I was hanging out with him in L.A. And I was like, 'Hey, man, let's just jam and write some sh-- for fun.' So, we wrote the demo for 'Hey Now' and I brought it back to the guys."

"Hey now" is pretty representative of the rest of After We Go, which comes out February 10. Throughout, the band lays a foundation of acoustic rock, then dirties it up with surging wah-wah, fuzzy showers of distortion and full-fisted beats.

"I think the record is more mature and it's definitely heavier," Ferreira said. "We're all older and we're a product of our environment. And there was crazy sh-- going on around us every day, whether it was another U.S. soldier getting shot or another disease that's killing people. Whenever you turn on the news, there's never anything good on there. People are pissed, everyone's broke, and we're invading other countries. There's no way you can be unaffected by it, and that struggle definitely helps give this record its own soul."

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines — Staind, Slipknot, Tantric, Buckcherry and others are contributing tracks to NASCAR's Crank It Up compilation.

Due to hit stores in June, the collection is "designed and built for racing fans," according to a label statement, and includes a plethora of rock outfits playing covers of high-speed, rubber-burning favorites.

Recently dissolved industrial rockers Fear Factory weigh in with their reworking of gearhead Gary Numan's classic '80s ode to four-wheelers, "Cars." Les Claypool offers up the song most likely to be played on an upright bass: the rockabilly classic "Hot Rod Lincoln." Meanwhile, "Lit Up" Los Angeles rockers Buckcherry will take on Willie Nelson's cross-country staple "On the Road Again."

Slipknot have also been slated for the album, though their cover choice has yet to be announced. Staind will contribute a previously unreleased track for the compilation, adding a taste of something new for all those backseat woofers and tailgate parties.

Among the other songs up for restoration are Tracy Chapman's 1988 hit "Fast Car" (by Darwin's Waiting Room) and Billy Ocean's "Get Outta My Dreams (Get Into My Car)" (by Fenix TX), which you may remember from the '80s Corey Haim/Corey Feldman slapstick first date joint "License to Drive."

Slayer are expected to peel out a cover of Deep Purple's 1972 classic "Highway Star," though their participation has not yet been confirmed.

Additional artists are still being lined up for the project, which will be released by MCA Records in conjunction with NASCAR and Fox TV.

Tracks confirmed thus far for Crank It Up, according to the label:

Nonpoint - "Circles"

Darwin's Waiting Room - "Fast Car"

Fenix TX - "Get Outta My Dreams (Get Into My Car)"

Tantric - "Cross the Line"

Buckcherry "On the Road Again"

(hed) pe - "Crosstown Traffic"

Gov't Mule - "Drivin' Rain"

Fear Factory - "Cars"

Les Claypool - "Hot Rod Lincoln"

Fans restlessly anticipating Creed's announcement of opening acts for their upcoming tour can now put their minds at ease. Louisville, Kentucky, quartet Tantric has been tapped to prime the crowd for the first leg of the Weathered tour, according to Creed's publicist.

Tantric will help the arena rockers kick things off January 16 in Atlanta and will stay along for the ride until the first leg concludes February 17 in Kansas City, Missouri (see "Creed Line Up First Leg Of Weathered Tour"). The band, composed of former members of Days of the New and singer Hugo Ferreira, is touring behind its eponymous debut, which was released in February, and its latest single, "Mourning."

Another opener for the first 18 dates will be announced later, as will two supporting acts for the second leg of the Weathered tour, an itinerary for which has yet to be finalized.

In November, Creed had expressed interest in having Tantric aboard for the trek, and also mentioned as possible contenders Sevendust, Nickelback, Drowning Pool, Incubus, Days of the New and Puddle of Mudd, a surprising choice considering the band is mentored by Fred Durst, with whom Creed frontman Scott Stapp has had a public feud since last summer (see "Durst's Disses Won't Muddy Creed's Selection Of Tour Openers"). Last week, Creed's management company issued a statement saying Puddle of Mudd would not be part of the tour, contradicting earlier claims by both bands' booking agencies that the group had been confirmed.

Creed's third album, Weathered, has held the top slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for three consecutive weeks since its release November 20 (see "Creed Continue To Beat Back The Competition On Albums Chart") and has thus far sold more than 1.7 million copies, according to SoundScan.

SEATTLE — 3 Doors Down weren't about to abandon their bread and
butter entirely — but they didn't mind dispensing with it as early as
possible.

Thus, during their show with Lifehouse and Tantric at the Key Arena
Wednesday, encore sure-bets "Duck and Run" and
"Kryptonite" were both knocked off before 3 Doors Down had been onstage 15
minutes.

"We get tired of hearing that old sh--, right?" singer Brad Arnold said at
one point, clearly speaking for his bandmates rather than the audience.

He looked relieved as soon as the final strains of "Kryptonite" died out and he began introducing the new song "When I'm Gone."
Opening on a thick wash of effects from guitarist Matt Roberts, the
slow-moving tune built to a tongue-twisting chorus: "Everything I am,
everything I need/ Wants to be the one you want me to be."
Arnold — the Escatawpa, Mississippi, band's original drummer — climbed
behind a second kit brought onstage for an aggressive new tune called
"Dangerous Game," which he said is "about stupid people killing one
another." Clad in a vintage Rush baseball T-shirt, Arnold focused on cymbals and hi-hat while full-time drummer Richard Liles rumbled across his toms during an interlude which was decidedly more brief than the typical double-drum duel.

The band, whose 17-month-old debut, The Better Life, has gone
five-times platinum, squeezed one other new song into its hour-long set.
The moody, throbbing "This Time" is about believing in yourself, Arnold said.

"Is it OK if we play a ballad for you?" Lifehouse singer/guitarist Jason Wade asked before launching into "Somewhere in Between" — as if any band with a #1 adult contemporary hit needs to inquire about the appropriateness of ballads. The women in the half-full crowd jumped, hollered and threw their arms toward the ceiling when the Los
Angeles group delivered its most impassioned performance of the night
with the chart-topping "Hanging by a Moment."
But Lifehouse's set was by and large reserved, as if the group were still
playing its old Friday night gigs at the high school auditorium. Wade,
bassist Sergio Andrade and guitarist Stuart Mathis wandered the stage
tentatively, almost like they were still getting acclimated to its
hugeness. The band eschewed all theatrics and showy solos.

Wade — a former Seattleite with a penchant for Eddie Vedder's
mushmouth enunciation — seemed most comfortable when discarding his
guitar, as he did on Lifehouse's latest single "Sick Cycle Carousel." It
was the band's penultimate tune and the first time Wade started jumping up
and down.

Tantric, otherwise known as Days of the New with singer Hugo Ferreira in
place of Travis Meeks, opened the night with a set that included the
singles "Breakdown" and "Astounded," which Ferreira dedicated to "all those
stupid f---ers that didn't believe in us."
Not that he didn't hand his critics grist on a silver platter. In a moment
right out of the Spinal Tap episode of "The Simpsons" ("Hello ... [awkward
pause] ... Springfield!"), Ferreira mistakenly shouted, "Alright,
Vancou— "
The audience seemed forgiving of the flub, though it probably didn't hurt
that he went on to shout "Seattle" no fewer than 12 times during the rest
of the show.

Tantric's four members flip on a television and quickly find something good to watch: their video.

As they lounge in an MTV green room before an interview, the musicians — who favor long hair, denim and motorcycle boots — watch their high-school-themed "Breakdown" clip with scholarly intensity.

"We should've done it nude," drummer Matt Taul muses.

Despite Tantric's Buddhism-evoking name and their moody, Alice in Chains-like sound, the band is, in person, utterly without pretense. Their banter is timeworn rock-star stuff — fun with groupies and techniques for hiding illegal substances when passing through airports.

Guitarist Todd Whitener, bassist Jesse Vest and Taul, all natives of Louisville, Kentucky, used to play in Days of the New until a contentious parting of ways with that band's frontman, Travis Meeks. They found a new frontman, Hugo Ferreira, formed a new band, and began once again to climb the music-industry ladder, releasing Tantric's self-titled debut in February.

They chatted with Brian Hiatt about the origins of their name, their bygone day jobs and how they'd be nowhere without Frank Sinatra.

MTV: As nice Midwestern guys, how did you come up with an exotic name like Tantric?
Matt Taul: First of all, we didn't think of it.

Hugo Ferreira: We were like, "That's too fancy for us." We had this time period where we had to come up with something new because we [didn't] like our original name, Carbon-14. One of the runners, or she was a secretary [at the studio] ...

Jesse Vest: … Ferreira's girlfriend.

Ferreira: Oh my God, I'm sorry. She came in and she was telling us about tantric sex. She was all into the whole Buddhism thing and she said it while she was naked, so we're like, "Tantric works." We did a little research on the name [and] we thought it was cool. But it wasn't like we were at the top of a mountain and God's voice came down [and said], "Tantric."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — They came. They saw. They rocked. They made a video.

More than 60,000 fans turned out each day to see bands including Staind, Green Day, Live, Fuel, Fatboy Slim, 3 Doors Down, Incubus and Lifehouse perform at the HFStival held at RFK Stadium Sunday and Monday.

The twelfth annual event, which volleys between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, brought more acts to the nation's capital than ever before and expanded to two days from its usual one. Three stages — including the main stage, a street stage and a local band stage — kept the crowd hopping for about 20 hours.
Monday's concertgoers were in for an added treat: they appeared in Good Charlotte's video for their next single, aptly titled "Festival Song," which was shot during their set.

"I grew up coming to the HFStival," said Good Charlotte frontman Joel, who hails from nearby Waldorf, Maryland. "I wrote this song about being here, how we wanted to quit our jobs to be in a band. We have all our friends, the fans and the radio support right here."
Sunday's last-minute appearance by Green Day provided one of the festival's highlights as the band set fire to its instruments after delivering a high-energy set that included "Welcome to Paradise," "Hitchin' a Ride," "Waiting" and "Minority." Live — who earned a pair of late-night performances on the main stage — also set the crowd buzzing after being joined by Tricky for "Evolution Revolution Love," from the latter's Blowback, due June 26.
Weezer also got tongues wagging, performing for a select group of radio contest winners in a small conference room at the stadium Monday.
The Cult, American Hi-Fi, Saliva, SR-71, Coldplay, Stabbing Westward, Linkin Park, Tantric, Powderfinger and Idlewild also hit the stage.

"The best shows are the festivals," Lifehouse frontman Jason Wade said. "It's great to see everyone singing along to every song."
"Festivals in America have gotten really cool," Live's Kowalczyk said. "They've been big in Europe for so long, the idea of bringing lots of bands together for the camaraderie of it. I love it."
HFStival has been a vital stop on many a breaking band's tour itinerary. No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Beck and Everclear have taken the stage in past years.

Due to the prestige of the gig, concertgoers were eager to make predictions about mainstream fame.
"Stone Temple Pilots brought the young and old together last year," Tim O'Neill, 30, of Bowie, Maryland, said. "Saliva could be the breakout act this year."
"Staind and Linkin Park made it great," Brianne Laplant, 16, of Eldersburg, Maryland, said.
While the music was the main focus, the crowd provided a sideshow of its own as girls flashed the audience whenever the camera put them in the spotlight.

Despite so-called "blanket tosses" and some attendees getting sprayed from bottles of urine during New Found Glory's performance, injuries at the festival were minimal, WHFS promotions director Donna Jean Rumbley said. "For 120,000 people, the crowd was well-behaved. No casualties."
