T-Pain Apologizes To Jay-Z In New Song, 'More Careful'

Pain concludes song by saying, 'My bad,' over recent flap with Hov.
By Jayson Rodriguez

OK, we get it: T-Pain really has no problem with Jay-Z.

The Auto-Tune star took aim at the legendary MC earlier this month while DJ'ing in Las Vegas, rebelling against the rapper's hit "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" in an explicit tirade. A day later, though, he backed away from his comments during a radio interview, claiming he'd just been trying to get clarification from Jay-Z about whether the song was about him or not.

Now, T-Pain has taken to song to apologize to Jay-Z publicly, saying, "My bad."

In a freestyle set to Drake and Trey Songz's "Successful" called "More Careful," the dreadlocked singer makes amends for his lack of discretion.

"I got the money, the money and the cars, the cars and the clothes, and unless I wanna let it all go, I just gotta be, I just gotta be more careful," he croons on the chorus.

"Aight, so let's talk about the Jay sh--," he raps in the third verse. "Some days I wish that I ain't never say sh--/ And Diddy said ain't no excuse for what I did/ But I felt like he was knocking the same sh-- that feeds my kids/ I do music 'cause I need it to make my world spin/ So when you get down to it, it's like you dissing my girlfriend."

T-Pain said in the past he was unclear of Jay-Z's motives behind his anti-Auto-Tune anthem. In his interviews, T-Pain pointed out, the rapper would defend Kanye West's and Lil Wayne's use of computer-aided vocals while simply saying he wasn't targeting Pain on the track. The vague responses, T-Pain said, felt like subtle indictments since he's the most acclaimed and accomplished artist associated with the program.

T-Pain also said Jay-Z snubbed him at Hot 97's annual concert, Summer Jam, when the rapper joked to radio personality Angie Martinez that he thought it was a fan who joined him on stage when Pain joined the Brooklyn wordsmith for his performance of "D.O.A."

But after T-Pain lashed out, when pressed about the burgeoning issue, Jay-Z said he thought the singer/producer was talented enough not to have to rely on the device. The response relieved T-Pain, he said at the time. But in rhyme he admitted it surprised him to even hear Jay-Z respond.

"And Jay one of the only n---as out here bringing it/ So I didn't think he would even entertain the sh--," T-Pain rapped. " 'Cause entertainment is see-through, but if you really feel like I'm dead, then, n---a, me too/ I ain't tryin' to write your rhymes, but you coulda skipped one DJ/ And all you had to say is, 'T-Pain, we cool.' "

He finishes the track out explaining he wasn't hating on Jay-Z's fame or trying to dis the rapper, and made sure his apologetic ode was clearer than a car windshield.

"But by all means, don't take this as a dis or hatin'/ I just wanna explain my side of the situation," T-Pain spits. "So if you knew how much respect that I have/ You'd know I'm a real n---a when I say, 'My bad.' "

NEW YORK — George Clinton was the night's honoree, and Lil Wayne and Kanye West were among the big winners, but Bootsy Collins undoubtedly stole the show at the 2009 BMI Urban Music Awards on Thursday night.

The famous bass player took part in the tribute to Clinton, which also included Outkast's Big Boi and Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo, among others. Collins, still the showman in his late 50s, led a party chant dedicated to his former Parliament-Funkadelic bandmate over "Atomic Dog." Decked out in his trademark rhinestone-studded attire, Collins then ventured out into the crowd and, despite wearing platform shoes thicker than most phone books, began climbing over seats.

"Ain't no party like a George Clinton party 'cause a George Clinton party don't stop!" Collins yelled repeatedly as the crowd, filled with artists like Rick Ross, Polow Da Don and Bobby V, stood. "Everybody now!"

Clinton was honored as the BMI Icon — joining the likes of 2008 recipient Michael Jackson — as an influence to generations of songwriters and producers including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Outkast, all whom have sampled from his wide range of hits with Parliament-Funkadelic.

Janelle Monáe, Dallas Austin and Goodie Mob's Big Gipp also paid tribute to Clinton, performing a number of his hits, including "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)," "Flash Light" and "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)."

Ross kicked off the festivities, performing "Magnificent" and "Usual Suspects" from his recent album Deeper Than Rap. Songwriter and emerging artist Kevin Cossom joined the Miami rapper on the latter track. Cossom was later awarded for Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down," a #1 track he penned for the R&B star.

Kanye West and Polow Da Don shared the 2009 Producer of the Year award. West wasn't in attendance at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall, but Polow received a standing ovation from the audience, including peers like Bryan-Michael Cox, Cool & Dre and Tha Business.

Last year Polow was awarded the Songwriter of the Year trophy, but Auto-Tune bandits Lil Wayne and T-Pain scored the recognition this year. Neither were present, but T-Pain appeared via a pre-recorded video that aired on the big screen above the stage. Sporting Oakley shades, a gray T-shirt and gold necklaces, T-Pain thanked BMI for the honor and shouted, "Money, money, money!" in regards to the nod.

Jordin Sparks' "No Air," featuring Chris Brown, won Song of the Year, with songwriter Erik Griggs receiving recognition. The "American Idol" winner was not in attendance, nor was Brown, who was shouted-out earlier in the show.

T-Pain's music talents were recognized again when he, Jim Jonsin, J.R. Rotem and Los Da Mystro were noted as 2009 Top Producers. Universal Music Publishing Group was tapped as the Publisher of the Year after dominating the charts with hits like Lil Wayne's "Mrs. Officer," Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" and Flo Rida's "Low."

Hilson, Polow and Mario partied it up with Rihanna, Katy Perry and other stars later that night at the Hennessy Black-sponsored BMI afterparty at Manhattan's M2.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards air live this Sunday, September 13, at 9 p.m. ET, but New York is celebrating the VMAs all week long! Stay tuned for party coverage, concert reports, behind-the-scenes updates and more.

In just a few days, the lights on the red carpet will be lit and the 2009 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards will begin welcoming the music world's biggest superstars into the confines of Radio City Music Hall. There, a handful of celebs will no doubt continue a relatively new VMA tradition: the big, flashy red-carpet arrival. Anybody can pull up in a stretch limo, but it takes a real man to arrive to the show on an elephant, as T-Pain did at last year's show.

In fact, 2008 was a watershed year for big arrivals, as Tokio Hotel (who later went on to win the Moonman for Best New Artist) pulled up to the show in a gigantic monster truck that bore the band's logo. Paramore also arrived on four wheels, though their means of conveyance was significantly smaller, as they were in Smart cars. Fall Out Boy turned down the volume even further when they showed up in a horse-drawn carriage. But the most audacious arrival from last year belonged to Young Jeezy, who made his presence known in a motorcade fit for a president. The rapper appeared in a T-shirt that read "My President Is Black" and even had a driver who wore a John McCain mask — further proof that even though he wasn't present, Barack Obama was still the biggest star of the night.

That's not to say that 2008 had the market cornered on interesting arrivals. The VMA sojourns to Miami in 2004 and 2005 allowed a number of stars — including Ricky Martin, Usher and Diddy — to arrive via luxury yacht. The 2005 show had a custom-car theme, which allowed musicians to hit the white carpet riding some of their favorite high-end automobiles: Snoop Dogg was in a 1967 Pontiac Parisienne convertible, Ludacris pulled up in a bouncing 1975 Pontiac Grandville and Green Day had a beat-up '68 Mercury Monterey (not unlike the vehicle that carries the band in the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" video). And some people took the "go big" idea seriously, as 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew took a giant customized bus, and the five dudes from My Chemical Romance arrived in the back of an armored truck ("We just want to be safe, you know?" frontman Gerard Way said then).

The security surrounding the arrivals for this year's show has been tight, though rumor has it that a number of New York-centric vehicles will be put to good use. But which will they be and who will they deliver? You'll have to tune in to the VMA Preshow to find out.

Watch the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Preshow this Sunday, September 13, at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the big event, airing live at 9 p.m. New York is celebrating the VMAs all week long, so stay tuned for party coverage, concert reports, behind-the-scenes updates and more.

Just a day after it was reported that T-Pain dissed Jay-Z while DJing in Las Vegas, he's changed his (Auto-) tune and said there's no beef between him and the Brooklyn rapper.

T-Pain's about-face stems from not only from a recent conversation he said he and Jay had, but also from a radio interview Hov gave on Tuesday, where he responded to T-Pain's taunts and said that his song "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" wasn't about Pain. T-Pain said it was the first time he heard Hov explicitly say that.

"Every time I saw his interviews, he just said, 'T-Pain is a talented dude,' " Pain told New York radio station Power 105's Ed Lover Wednesday morning (September 9). "But I will say the interview he did yesterday" — in which Jay said, "I made it very clear I wasn't talking about him" — "that made me feel better."

T-Pain said his issue with Jay-Z stemmed from the two's appearance onstage at Hot 97's Summer Jam concert in New Jersey in June. T-Pain joined Jay-Z during his performance of "D.O.A." just days after the rapper premiered the track. In the song, Jay-Z jabs at artists who have been relying on Auto-Tune too much for their vocals; he absolved Lil Wayne and Kanye West from his complaint, but wasn't quite as vocal in defending T-Pain, who played a major role in bringing the vocal-enhancing device into the pop consciousness.

T-Pain said he was a fan of the song from the onset, and said he even reached out Jay-Z to join him onstage during Summer Jam. But Jay-Z told him he was overseas in Switzerland, he said, and wouldn't be able to make it.

When Jay-Z did make a surprise appearance at Summer Jam, T-Pain said he was shocked. Hov went onstage with Young Jeezy; T-Pain said he joined the pair onstage at the recommendation of one of Jay-Z's associates. Afterward, though, according to T-Pain, Jay-Z snubbed him.

"I'm ready to go on stage after Jeezy's set and [the concert organizers] said, 'Hold on, Jay-Z is about to come out with Jeezy,' and I said, 'Well, Jay-Z is in Switzerland.' They say, 'No he's not, he's right there,' and I look and there's Jay-Z. So he gets on the stage and when he gets to the part [on 'D.O.A.'] where he says, 'I don't need anyone smiling at this,' he pointed at me. And then at the end of the song, when I tried to shake his hand, he turned around and said 'Good riddance.' "

For the past two months, T-Pain said he was trying to contact Jay-Z about whether he was being attacked on the song. He said during his own shows, audience members would shout, "You're finished!" at him and throw up Jay-Z's Roc diamond hand signal. When he couldn't get hold of the rapper to clarify the situation, he decided to lash out.

The Vegas gig was the first time most fans heard about the situation, since Fabolous tweeted about it. Fabolous then started an anti-T-Pain crusade on Twitter on Tuesday after an imposter T-Pain account called him out, but once Fab realized it was a fake, he backtracked.

T-Pain said he's spoken with Fab and the two have patched things up.

"I feel a lot better," T-Pain said. "Neither me nor Jay-Z have time to go through this beef crap. I'm a fan of Jay-Z, I'mma always be a fan of Jay-Z. Me and Fab talked today. He apologized and said it was stupid on his part."

T-Pain has apparently changed his (Auto-) tune when it comes to Jay-Z and his "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" song. In June, when Jay made his first live performance of the record at the Hot 97 Summer Jam at Giants Stadium, Pain came onstage
and stood, with a smile, beside Hov.

"I look, and I see somebody to my right, and I swear I thought it was a fan coming up to me to hug me," Jay told Hot 97 a few months back. " 'Cause I didn't see who it was. I thought it was some cool, rock-star stuff. And then I saw him move again, and I looked back. I guess [T-Pain] wanted to get close to me ... It was a little awkward, but it was cool.

"He didn't mean any harm," Jay continued. "He's just embracing the record. You shouldn't be confused by the message. I'm not saying Auto-Tune is wack. But leave that for them [T-Pain, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, artists who Jay said use it artistically]; it's not for everybody. That's how you stagnate hip-hop. You listen to the radio, and every single has Auto-Tune. So we have to get rid of that part."

Over the weekend in Las Vegas, T-Pain's praise for Hov apparently turned into scorn. There's footage on the Internet where Pain takes aim at Hov during a DJ set.

"Jay-Z is 59 years old. I don't think he has the right to say what's good and what's not," Pain said at the club Rehab while on the mic. "I think if anything is dead, it should be him. ... To any Jay-Z fans out in the crowd, excuse the f--- outta me. But you don't see me saying 'rap is dead,' even though it is. 'Cause apparently all the rappers are trying to do T-Pain."

Pain then started singing, "All rappers out there are using Auto-Tune ..."

During an interview on New York's Power 105.1 on Tuesday morning (September 8), Jay was asked about Pain's comments.

"You have to ask him. I have no idea," Jay explained to Ed Lover and Free about Pain's comments. "I said he brought it back, at the time, which was cool at the time. I didn't have a problem with it. I didn't have a problem with a couple of people doing it, but when a whole genre of music is doing it, then it's getting lame and it's not cool to me. ... I made it very clear I wasn't talking about him. ... 'D.O.A.' was just for the conversation whether you was for it or against it. Obviously some people felt that way. ... You have to have two sides to have an argument."

As for the recent comments about Jay's age, he said, "Well, everybody has a birthday. I just don't think they have much else to say. They can't attack my credentials as an artist or my lyrics as an MC. You can't really attack my lifestyle. What are you going to say about me?"

Jay was also a guest on New York's Hot 97 on Tuesday morning, and when asked about Pain's comments Jay shrugged it off, saying, "I hope he had a good time. I just hope he had a great time."

In June, Pain had nothing but praise for the Jiggaman. He tweeted: " 'D.O.A.' is the best song I've heard in a couple years." Pain also told MTV News, "He only makes it better for me [by releasing 'D.O.A.']"

At press time, T-Pain was not available for comment, although one of his artists, Young Cash, tweeted that Pain was just joking.

It's been a little while since T-Pain was featured on nearly everyone's record while still topping the charts with songs of his own. But when MTV News caught up with T-Pain via Skype, he insisted he was still working with a bunch of people — he's just been hiding from Diddy.

"Diddy's kind of aggressive," T-Pain explained. "He can get that way, but I tried to change my phone number every time he tried to reach me."

T has been working with Diddy on the Bad Boy impresario's new album, Last Train to Paris, and has written 12 songs for the project.

"He's been a producer for so many years, so he pretty much knows what he's doing," T said. "But it's more like ideas for different songs and getting different concepts and topics."

T-Pain clued us in about one of the tracks he had written for Diddy called "Let's Play a Game." The song uses old board games like Chutes and Ladders and Who Did It? to describe a relationship.

"It's a line in there saying, 'I've been on chutes and ladders watching you get in trouble,' " T-Pain said.

As for Diddy's voice, T-Pain said his experience singing hooks will help him. "Auto-Tune will help that out a little bit, but I just told him to put some more into it," Pain explained. "But he's pretty good [at singing] actually, which is weird."

Another thing T-Pain found weird was one of the concepts around Diddy's Last Train to Paris. The album will be performed by a group called Dirty Money, which features former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard as well as newcomer Keelena.

"He said he was making a group ... on his whole album it's going to be him, another dude and two girls, so that was weird to me as it is. He said [to not] make the song for him, just make a song, and whoever he thinks can sing certain parts, that's who's going to sing it in the group," Pain said. "I don't know what the hell to expect from that guy right now."

Amid the star-studded tributes to Michael Jackson on the BET Awards, Jay-Z's big premieres for his new single, "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)"
— a live performance during the show and a premiere of the video after the show — were somewhat obscured. But still, the song — in which Jigga rails against artists who use the ubiquitous pitch-correction software in their songs — has had a lot of people asking, Just what is Auto-Tune?

The technique used these days is actually a software program created in 1997 as a means of audio processing. When a singer's voice is filtered through Auto-Tune, the pitch is tweaked depending on what tone is pre-programmed into the software. The result the robotic-sounding effect familiar from Cher's 1990s hit "Believe" and later pushed into more common usage by T-Pain.

Pitch correction isn't new, however. In the '70s, artists experimented with a tool called the vocoder (a hybrid of "voice" and "encoder"). The vocoder turns the human voice into synthesized tones that can be further manipulated via keyboards or other instruments. Styx notably used the vocoder on "Mr. Roboto," and funk band Zapp made their mark in the '80s by using voice synthesizers, including vocoders and talk boxes (which is the same gadget Peter Frampton used to make his guitar speak on Frampton Comes Alive! and Aerosmith used on "Sweet Emotion"). Zapp frontman Roger Troutman re-entered the pop consciousness in 1996 when he was featured on Tupac and Dr. Dre's classic single "California Love."

Though Auto-Tune is all over the charts these days (from Black Eyed Peas to Lady Gaga to Kanye West), the Jay-Z single sparked a big debate among artists about the merits of the technology — Jay said he felt it jumped the shark when he saw it used in a Wendy's commercial. Though T-Pain said he wouldn't stop using it, he agreed that it is grossly overused. Wyclef Jean also proved he stood in the anti-Auto-Tune camp when he released "Mr. Autotune" (a collaboration with Nick Cannon), which featured the hook, "I'm Mr. Autotune/ If you sing off-key/ For a small fee/ I can make you a celebrity."

But a number of stars have come forward in defense of Auto-Tune, including Mary J. Blige and and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am, who said he understands Jay-Z's point. "I like Auto-Tune, but too much Auto-Tune is like mad weird." Fergie added, "Will really does [Auto-Tune] tastefully."

Kanye West — who was one of the artists absolved by Jay-Z for using Auto-Tune well — commented that he has removed all traces of the technology from Hova's upcoming album Blueprint 3, which West co-produced.

And the trend isn't just popular among hip-hop and pop stars, either, as several country artists (including Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts) have used it Auto-Tune on record and in concert.

Either way, despite the controversies — and for better or worse — Auto-Tune remains one of the defining sounds of this era.

Yes, technically a bunch of other artists won hardware at the Country Music Television Awards on Tuesday night, but mostly the show seemed like a dream factory come true for reigning teen country queen Taylor Swift. The 19-year-old megastar made her MC debut as T-Swizzle in a cute rap clip with T-Pain for "Thug Story," performed her single "You Belong With Me" and ended the show by joining one of her favorite bands, '80s pop-metal stars Def Leppard, on their indelible arena rocker "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

The night began with a skit about Swift living her fantasies (keep wishing about the whole "Star Trek" and Tennessee Titans thing), and in between the performances, for the second year in a row, she dominated two categories: Best Video of the Year and Best Female Video, both for her elaborate "Romeo and Juliet"-style "Love Story" clip.

"I wanna thank CMT for letting me live so many of my dreams this year!" Swift said. "I want to thank Shania Twain for always making such theatrical videos, and I want to thank Garth Brooks for always putting his fans first. I take my cues from you. And I want to thank my little brother, Austin, for agreeing to be my date tonight."

Though it was clearly Swift's night, it was Brad Paisley who actually won the show's award tally, taking home Best Male Vocalist ("Waiting on a Woman"), Performance of the Year ("Country Boy" with Alan Jackson, George Strait and Dierks Bentley) and Best Collaboration ("Start a Band" with Keith Urban). Accepting for the latter, whose video features two kids playing "Rock Band," Urban urged, "Learn guitar, kids ... the real thing." Paisley added, " 'Rock Band' never got anyone a date ... never."

Other winners included Rascal Flatts for Group Video of the Year ("Every Day"), Sugarland for Duo Video of the Year ("All I Want to Do") and Kid Rock for Wide Open Country Video ("All Summer Long"). Accepting his award, the always humble Rock joked that his win must really have been based on the creativity of the video for the song — which mashes up Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London."

"What's more creative than a strip pole on a pontoon boat?" Rock quipped.

In addition to the appearances by T-Pain and Def Leppard, the show featured a number of other decidedly non-country visitors, including rocker Ted Nugent as a presenter and Sugarland hooking up with fellow Georgians the B-52s on that band's pop classic, "Love Shack."

T-Pain isn't budging from his Auto-Tune use in the wake of Jay-Z's new song, "D.O.A." In fact, the Tallahassee star is embracing song's message. The computer-aided singer recently revealed on Twitter that he plans to push up the release of his new album from next year to this November instead.

"I'm droppin a new album called UBER," T-Pain wrote.

"The album just got pushed up," Pain told MTV News on Sunday (June 7) during the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert. "It was gonna come out September next year. [The record label], they're making me come out November this year. It makes the label look straight. I was gonna chill, because it was so many people that do what I do — now Jay-Z done dropped the 'Death of Auto-Tune' and it's time for me to come back."

And yes, Pain says he will be using the vocal enhancement style he re-popularized.

"Oh yeah," he said about whether he'll still use Auto-Tune. "Definitely now. Jay-Z said something ... I gotta do it now. It's nothing outta the ordinary, so I'm ready."

Jay-Z's anti-Auto-Tune track debuted last week on New York radio station Hot 97 and immediately put the spotlight on T-Pain, the artist most recognized for using the program. But Jay singled out the "rappa turnt sanga," along with Kanye West and Lil Wayne as talents who aren't beholden to the pitch-correcting device. Shortly after his interview with MTV, T-Pain even appeared onstage with Jay when the Brooklyn wordsmith performed the song at Summer Jam.

"I look and I see somebody to my right, and I swear I thought it was a fan coming up to me to hug me," Jay explained in a Hot 97 radio interview about T-Pain joining him. " 'Cause I didn't see who it was. I thought it was some cool, rock-star stuff. And then I saw him move again, and I looked back. I guess [T-Pain] wanted to get close to me."

Jay called the moment "awkward, but cool" and told DJ Angie Martinez he wasn't sure if T-Pain would take offense to the song.

For his part, T-Pain said he wasn't so sure either — he Tweeted, "I don't know if Hov was dissin me or not, but I would rather have him dissin me if that's what it takes to make good music."

In the wake of "D.O.A." and the debate about Auto-Tune, T-Pain seems to want to capitalize on the moment. He even gave Jay props right back on the track. And while some of the offending Auto-Tune parties figure out what to do next, T-Pain is gonna put the final touches on Uber.

" 'D.O.A.' is the best song I've heard in a couple years," T-Pain said on his Twitter page. "Watch me get back out here and do my thang."
