'Workaholics' Rep Hard For Sum 41, Best Coast In Musical March Madness

MTV's Musical March Madness tournament has moved on to the second round, leaving plenty of heavily favored bands by the wayside, in a smoking pile, dreams shattered (MMM is nothing if not dramatic).

And so, with voting in all round-two matchups currently under way — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — we figured now was a perfect time to gauge the temperature of the tourney with the guys from Comedy Central's "Workaholics." After all, they know a thing or two about smoking (we can't vouch for their dreams, however).

We caught up with stars Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck at their rather epic South by Southwest party, and perhaps it was due to the free-flowing beverages — or the cornholing — but, boy, were their predictions off base. In fact, of all the bands they picked, only three still remain in MMM. So while their dreams may not be shattered, their brackets definitely are. But still, you've got to give them credit for their enthusiasm ... and their ability to throw a killer party. So here's who the "Workaholics" have winning it all in Musical March Madness.

"Maroon 5 for the win. Adam Levine, I'm going to fight you over our name. I'm Adam Devine, I get so many tweets every day like, 'I love you on "The Voice," ' " Devine said. "Truthfully, [I'm going] Black Keys versus Jack White in the finals, Black Keys take the win. Sorry, Jack, go tanning or something, you're freaking us all out."

"I'm going Bruce Springsteen versus Best Coast [in the finals], and Bruce just barely nudges her out," Anderson added. "That'd be a great show. I'd see that show."

OK, so just in case you haven't been paying attention, Maroon 5, the Black Keys and Bruce all lost in the first round. Best Coast are still kicking, of course, but right now, they're locked in a tight battle with "American Idol" fave James Durbin, who shocked the world by knocking off #1 seed the Foo Fighters in round one. So, Bethany, it's time to rally the troops — a spot in the Sweet 16 is at stake.

And while Devine and Anderson may have swung and missed in their picks, the same can't be said about Newachek, who's repping hard for dark-horse candidates Sum 41, who rolled all the way to the Elite Eight last year, and appear poised for another deep run this year. Having already taken down #2 Bon Iver, they currently lead #7 Metallica by a slight margin.

"I'm going Sum 41 all the way. They're gonna snap Bon Iver's neck, they would crush Metallica," Newachek said. "Sum 41, keep it rocking."

"I used to look like that kid, the bass player," Holm added. "You know [as a] thinner young man."

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Sum 41 Size Up Coldplay In Musical March Madness

No band has shaken up the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament quite like Sum 41, the Canadian punk quartet that entered the fray as a lowly #16 seed, then proceeded to run roughshod over heavily favored #1 Arcade Fire in the tourney's opening round.

Now, it's on to the second round, where Sum faces the unenviable task of taking down another titan: 8th-seeded Coldplay. And with voting now open in the matchup, MTV News decided to ask Sum frontman Deryck Whibley what he thinks about his band's chances. Can they shock the world once again and earn a berth in the Sweet 16? Turns out, even he's not sure — mostly because he hasn't been paying much attention.

"Coldplay? I like those guys. I like them better than us. I hope they win because they're good," Whibley said. "I don't really care about sports. Our bass player, Cone, is really into it. I just found out what March Madness was, literally a couple days ago; I'd never even heard that term before."

Not exactly the talk of a band primed for a championship run. But still, with a legion of fanatics behind them, it wouldn't be a shock to see Sum 41 pull the upset in round two and advance to the Sweet 16. And to that end, even Whibley will admit he's not surprised by Sum's MMM success: He didn't think his band was the underdogs against Arcade Fire in the first round.

"I keep hearing that band's name. I've never heard a single note from them," he said, laughing. "I don't know what they are. I keep hearing they're, like, the coolest band since the Strokes, but I don't know."

And it's not like Whibley is throwing in the towel against Coldplay, either — "I mean, if we won, that would be great," he said — and really, however far they go in the tournament is up to you. Voting is now open on the Newsroom blog, and perhaps Sum's fans can guide them to the most unlikely championship in MMM history — not to mention the very fancy trophy.

Whibley said he would put the trophy "with the rest," laughing. "It may end up in the pool, you never know. I don't know, I don't have any plans ... mostly because I don't plan on winning it!"

Sum 41 Had 'Complete Freedom' On Screaming Bloody Murder

Band's first new album in nearly four years is strictly for the fans, Deryck Whibley says.

Deryck Whibley knows it's been awhile since Sum 41 released a new album. But he doesn't really care.

"Something like three or four years ago, I just started writing songs. We never intended to make a record; it was more like collecting music in a way. ... If I had an idea, I'd write, and it would come to me in 10 minutes, I'd throw it on a tape and forget about it," he said. "We didn't really care about any kind of deadline or whatever, because we'd been touring in the midst of all the writing, and any time we'd put on a tour, it would sell out. And I started to realize, 'You know what? I don't care if radio plays this, I don't care if the video gets played, I don't care if the critics like it, f--- everybody, because we have our fans, and it's about us, our music and our fans.' ... I'm not against anybody, but if nobody likes us in all the media, f--- it, it doesn't matter, we don't need them."

And it's with that attitude that Sum 41 return to the racks with Screaming Bloody Murder (due March 29), their first proper album in nearly four years. It's a rough-and-tumble, down-and-dirty affair, recorded on the fly and intended for just two groups of folks: Sum 41 and their die-hard fans. For better or worse, critics — and record labels — be damned.

"For the most part, I think people [at Sum's label, Island Records] thought I was f---ing crazy, and they thought that this was going to be a never-ending record and that I didn't know what I was doing, and it was sort of the Chinese Democracy of punk rock, I guess," Whibley said. "They actually stopped paying for stuff. At one point, we got to the point where I was like, 'I've got two more songs,' and they're like, 'This record is done. You are not getting any more money out of us, we are not going to put any more money into this thing, you're just wasting time.' And I just said, 'All right, f--- it, I'll pay for it.' And I ended up paying for the last few songs for the record. So, yeah, I feel strongly about this record, mostly because I feel like, it's when we realized we had complete freedom."

And if Whibley seems rather, uh, brusque about things, well, he has good reason to be. After all, the past few years have been pretty rough for him, starting in 2009, with his divorce from wife of three years, Avril Lavigne, and running right through a bar fight that left him hospitalized last year. All those things are covered on Bloody Murder, and because of that — and his unfettered freedom to create exactly the kind of album he wanted to — Whibley said he's found a happiness he's never known before. One he now wants to share with his fans.

"I wrote a lot of these songs in a dark period, because, going through the divorce period was a very hard, dark time. And what I realized, I guess, is, when you're going through something — whether it's a death in the family, a divorce, something that's very unexpected and painful — you go super, super low, and then when you can come out of it, what you thought was your highest point becomes even higher," he said. "And that's where I'm at now, and that's where I was at making the record. When I was writing it, it was in the low period, and now I'm at a highest point that I didn't know existed."

Sum-41's Deryck Whibley Hospitalized After Attack In Japan

'We are waiting for results and we are hoping for the best,' his bandmates posted online.

Sum-41 frontman Deryck Whibley has been hospitalized after being attacked by three people in a bar late last night in Japan, his bandmates tweeted. He's being treated for unspecified injuries.

There isn't much detail out there about the rocker — also the ex-husband of pop/punk singer Avril Lavigne — but Sum-41 posted a statement on their website for concerned fans: "It is unfortunate to say, but Deryck Whibley is still in the hospital. He was attacked late last night in Japan. We are waiting for results and we are hoping for the best. Thanks for your support."

According to E! News, Japanese police are investigating the incident, which comes on the heels of Sum-41 announcing Sunday they were forced to cancel three Warped Tour shows because Whibley contracted a bad case of bronchitis. The ailment threatens to mess up his voice permanently, the band said in a statement.

"We have been ordered by a physician to cancel a few of our upcoming Vans Warped Tour dates — Chicago, Minneapolis and Kansas City. Deryck has been diagnosed with a serious case of bronchitis, and singing could damage his voice permanently," the statement read. "The tour has been going amazing so far, and we wish Deryck a speedy recovery so we can continue rocking. We apologize to our fans in Chicago, Minneapolis and Kansas City, and we promise to return to these cities on our upcoming world tour."

No word yet on how this latest incident will affect those dates.

Avril Lavigne Files For Divorce

Avril Lavigne filed for divorce from Sum 41's Deryck Whibley last week, according to case summary obtained by MTV News. The pair had been married for three years.

The news does not come as a surprise, as Lavigne posted on her MySpace page September 17 that they had separated. According to TMZ, the documents state that Lavigne cited "irreconcilable differences" and that the couple separated September 4. The documents also reportedly state that Lavigne is not asking for spousal support.

In her post last month, Lavigne wrote: "Deryck and I have been together for six-and-a-half years. We have been friends since I was 17, started dating when I was 19, and married when I was 21. I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship. I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note."

Lavigne concluded the message by thanking her family, friends and fans for their support.

The message (which was titled "Moving forward on a positive note") confirmed speculation that had run rampant in recent months that the couple's marriage was on the rocks. Earlier on September 17, Us Weekly ran a story that cited a source as saying Lavigne had "dumped" Whibley and forced him to move out of their Bel Air, California, mansion, adding that "divorce papers will be filed any day now."

Lavigne and Whibley were married in July 2006 in a non-denominational ceremony held at a private estate in Montecito, California, and their partnership quickly extended into the field of music, as Whibley played on and produced parts of Lavigne's last album, 2007's The Best Damn Thing, and was reportedly working with her on the follow-up to that record.

After more than three years of marriage, Avril Lavigne and her husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, are separating, according to a message posted late Thursday (September 17) on Lavigne's MySpace page.

"Deryck and I have been together for six-and-a-half years. We have been friends since I was 17, started dating when I was 19, and married when I was 21. I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship," the message reads. "I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note."

Lavigne concluded the message by thanking her family, friends and fans for their support.

Statement on Sum 41's MySpace page refutes National Enquirer allegations.

Despite anything you might have read, Avril LavigneAvril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley's marriage is apparently just fine, thank you.

That's according to a statement posted Tuesday on Whibley's band Sum 41Sum 41's MySpace page, under the title "Totally False Gossip," denying a report in the National Enquirer that his two-year marriage to Lavigne was on the rocks, and that he had recently put his career on the back burner "in favor of partying."

"The National Enquirer ... [has] issued a gossip story surrounding Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 and his wife Avril Lavigne. For the record we strongly deny the inference of marital problems between Avril and Deryck," the statement reads. "We also strongly deny the National Enquirer claims of any other liaisons. Deryck has in fact been traveling through Asia performing with Avril as evidenced by the numerous YouTube videos."

The Enquirer story quotes an "insider" as saying that Lavigne and Whibley's marriage has been strained by "his manic bar-hopping and seemingly bachelor-like behavior," and that, earlier this month, as Lavigne toured China, Whibley was seen with a "statuesque brunette beauty" at Los Angeles' Villa nightclub.

"Deryck isn't motivated in his own career, so he's been drinking and partying," the insider reportedly said.

Whibley's statement doesn't address any of the Enquirer's charges directly, but rather ends by questioning the validity of the publication's sources, and took the media to task for even bothering to report on the story in the first place.

"I'm actually very surprised that so many media outlets picked this story up," he says in the statement. "Since when did the National Enquirer become a trust worthy news source?"

Lavigne and Whibley were married in July 2006, at a private ceremony in Montecito, California. They had gotten engaged the previous year in Venice, Italy.

Linkin Park's outreach project, Music for Relief, has set its sights on a new challenge: helping Southern California recover from the devastating wildfires. The band has contributed $50,000 to Direct Relief International — a Santa Barbara nonprofit that has been providing medical supplies to victims — and the donation was matched by SanDisk Corporation, a flash-data-storage-card company. "The wildfires are an unfathomable tragedy," LP bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell said in a statement. "Being able to help victims of a natural disaster like the wildfires is exactly why Music for Relief was founded." The band is also encouraging its fans to make their own contributions through the Music for Relief Web site. ...

Common's still riding strong with his latest album, the recently released Finding Forever, but while he's looking forward, his former label is looking backward with a new compilation of early cuts. ThisIsMe Then: The Best of Common, being issued by Relativity/ Sony Legacy, compiles 15 songs from 1992-'97 — but the enhanced disc has four video extras too: for "Take It EZ," "I Used to Love H.E.R.," "Retrospect for Life" (featuring Lauryn Hill) and "Invocation." It's set to street November 27. ... The Roc is in the building: Freeway hosted a listening session at S.O.B.'s in New York Monday night for his sophomore set, Free at Last, due November 20. The Philadelphia rapper previewed collaborations with 50 Cent, Rick Ross and Jadakiss, before Beanie Sigel hit the stage with him to perform their Just Blaze-produced classic, "Roc the Mic." ...

Reggae singer Beenie Man was released from a Kingston, Jamaica, jail on $21,000 bail on Monday after appearing in court on tax-evasion charges, according to The Associated Press. Authorities say the singer (born Anthony Moses Davis) owes about $661,000 in overdue taxes in Jamaica. He's due back in court December 3. ... The estate of late rapper Notorious B.I.G. filed a federal court motion on Monday claiming that prison inmate Waymond Anderson, who once implicated a former police officer in the killing of the rapper, was lying when he recently recanted his testimony. AP reports that the motion seeks access to phone and prison visitation records for Anderson, who is serving a life sentence for murder in a separate case. In an August 20 deposition Anderson said he lied about the alleged police involvement as part of a scam involving the slain rapper's family members and attorneys to win a monetary settlement from the city. The estate argued in its filing that the records will discredit Anderson's story and reveal who was behind his "wholesale assault on the truth." ...

A 20th-anniversary edition of the A Very Special Christmas album — featuring performances by No Doubt, Wyclef Jean, Sting, Run-D.M.C., Jon Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow and U2 — will be released November 20. The package benefiting the Special Olympics will also feature the first-ever DVD collection of videos in the series' history, including performances from the 1998 and 2000 Christmas at the White House specials. ... Two anti-poverty groups co-founded by Bono, the ONE Campaign and Debt AIDS Trade Africa, will merge their operations in the U.S. to create a single organization that will be known as ONE. Reuters reports that the organization will continue to focus on poverty-relief efforts in Africa and the U.S., according to a statement from Bono, in which he said, "ONE and DATA are two organizations with the same outrage: Extreme, stupid poverty in the 21st century makes no sense when the resources and technology exist to do something about it. ... What makes sense is to harness these two forces into a single organization and redouble our efforts. One goal. One team." And in yet more U2 news, National Geographic Cinema Ventures will release a new film, "U2 3D," in late January. The movie will play in 3-D only, in select theaters worldwide. Filmed in South America during a series of U2 concerts on their Vertigo Tour, the film is the first live-action movie ever shot, produced and exhibited in digital 3-D, and strove to capture the intimacy between the band and its audience. ...

Slayer and Halloween are a match made in hell, and this year the metal titans have partnered with MySpace to spook fans into buying their new concert DVD, "The Unholy Alliance - Chapter II: Preaching to the Perverted," which also features performances by Lamb of God, Mastodon and more. One of the clips from the DVD, Slayer's performance of their Grammy-winning song "Eyes of the Insane," will stream all day on MySpace TV on Wednesday. ... Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't so into the initial idea of singing onstage last year with Jay-Z at London's Royal Albert Hall, she admitted to W magazine for its September issue. "Jay was playing at the Albert Hall on my birthday, and he said, 'Will you sing on this song?' " the actress told the mag. "At first I didn't want to do it!" Paltrow also talked a little about her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who was also onstage for the strange collabo. "When Chris gets home, we're not going to do anything other than what any regular couple does," she said. ...

A day after Amy Winehouse canceled two European festival dates following a trip to a London hospital to deal with what her label termed "severe exhaustion," a spokesperson for the singer said doctors have ordered Winehouse to rest in bed. For now, she's still expected to perform at the Virgin Festival in Toronto on September 8 as well as a string of U.S. dates in September. Winehouse's spokesperson would not comment on British tabloid reports that said the collapse that led to the singer's hospitalization was possibly drug-related. ...

Not necessarily. An open casting call will be held to determine who will play Biggie, and actors and non-actors alike are being allowed to try out for the part. Robard-Rifkin, who filed a police report Thursday (August 9), added, "I'm not asking for money. I'm not asking for a new car. ... Kevin Federline's lawyer filed documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday (August 8) for primary physical custody of his two sons with Britney Spears, People reports. Less than two weeks ago, the couple's divorce was finalized, at which point they agreed to joint custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James. Federline, who previously resisted the 50/50 custody agreement, has been worried Spears has been exposing the boys to unnecessary risk, a source told the magazine. ...

Zac Efron may be showing off his assets in his revealing Rolling Stone cover shot, but he's more modest when it comes to talking about his star-making turn in "High School Musical." Lopez had filed the breach-of-contract lawsuit over Ojani Noa's plans to publish a tell-all book in which he was expected to claim the singer/actress had multiple affairs. The court-ordered arbitrator who made the Monday decision also decided that Lopez should be awarded a permanent injunction barring Noa from criticizing or disparaging her. In other J. The lineup for the first-ever Farm Aid show in New York, on September 9, has been set. Lauryn Hill arrived more than two hours late and performed an uneven if not memorable set on Monday night at Brooklyn, New York's Wingate Field as part of the free Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series. The enigmatic singer, overdressed for a hot summer night, showed up at 10 p.m. for the scheduled 7:30 show and ran through a number of her more popular solo and Fugees hits — but often reconfigured them into unrecognizable scat chants. Hill told the audience her sometimes-inaudible voice was hoarse, but her tone improved as she continued. Hill closed the show with her Grammy-winning "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and then immediately exited after thanking the 10,000-plus people who showed up for the park jam. ...

Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and Common will light up the Red Star Soul concert series over the course of the next three months, Billboard.com reports.
