As you can see, it's a pretty weak week for new releases — don't expect to see many new faces cracking next week's top 10 ... or 20, for that matter. In fact, it's so slow that we've decided to double up some of the latest rack contenders tag-team style and see who'd come out on top. It's probably the only time you'll see a margarita-swilling folk legend conspiring with death-metal cretins to body-slam a band of cabaret-loving punks.

Round One: Tricked-Out Magic

Alchemist and Elefant vs. Moby and Coachella: Alchemist is hoping to turn his fading 1st Infantry record — it's been out for almost two years — back into gold with a DVD-enhanced deluxe edition. New York dynamos Elefant are up to some mojo of their own with their second release, The Black Magic Show, taking on producer Don Gilmore (Good Charlotte, Linkin Park) and mixer Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Sonic Youth). In the other corner, Moby pours two bonus films, a cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" and a full CD of remixes into his "Live - Hotel Tour 2005" set, then gangs up with the cast of "Coachella: The Film" — including the Flaming Lips, Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Winners:

When the other Coachella backups — Belle and Sebastian, Muse and Tenacious D — find themselves up against Al's impressive guests (Nas, Game and T.I.), it's time to ring the bell.

Round Two: Burnin' Up

The Fiery Furnaces and Just a Fire vs. Judge Jules and the Red Krayola: Native Chicago twosome the FF burn into this competition with their fourth opus, Bitter Tea, frothing over with songs like "The Vietnamese Telephone Ministry," "Police Sweater Blood Vow" and "Whistle Rhapsody?" Windy City cohorts Just a Fire — featuring members of June of 44 and Sweep the Leg Johnny — keep the temperature raised with their second record, Spanish Time. On the other end of the ring, pre-eminent DJ Judge Jules dishes up his first domestic release in almost 13 years with The Global Warm-Up Mix CD, which cobbles together tracks by lesser-known players like Signalrunner, Randy Katana and E-Craig; and the 40-year-old Red Krayola throw another iron in the fire with their ill-named Introduction, even if it is their first studio set in more than five years.

Winners: Fiery Furnaces and Just a Fire out-sweat the competition.

Round Three: Lunch Break

The Disco Biscuits and Banana Blender Surprise vs. Matthew Sweet and Marshall Chapman: Jam-rock spazz-outs the Disco Biscuits have the most colorful album cover this week with The Wind at Four to Fly, and their tag-team partners Banana Blender Surprise promise even more dietary goodness on their own double-disc affair, Paint the Town Brown, which culls together most of the band's old material. Matthew Sweet and the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs come together to recap some of their favorite '60s tunes by the Beatles, Neil Young and the Velvet Underground for Under the Covers, Vol. 1, while Chapman antes up with Mellowicious!, her first outing in nine years.

Winners: Sweet and Mellowicious! let their sugary tendencies get the better of them, and DB and BBS' continental breakfast makes them the new intercontinental champions.

Round Four: Getting Frisky

Animal Liberation Orchestra and Be Your Own Pet vs. the Lovely Feathers and Lizzie West: ALO put out a different version of Fly Between Falls last summer, but their new one has a fresh recording of "Walls of Jericho" — a song featured on Jack Johnson's recent live DVD — plus reworked takes of "Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down" and "Barbecue." Be Your Own Pet, in the meantime, keep it elementary on their Summer Sensation EP with tracks like "Bicycle, Bicycle" and "Fire Department." On the opposing side, the Lovely Feathers get up on their Hind Hind Legs digipak to name off a couple of their heroes on "Pope Jean Paul" and "Rod Stewart," while Lizzie West ropes in the White Buffalo to craft I Pledge Allegiance to Myself, on which she covers songs by Bob Marley and Steve Goodman.

Winners: Freedom fighters ALO and Be Your Own Pet claw through their opponents (with some help from Elefant, who hunt down the White Buffalo when the ref's not looking).

Round Five: Location, Location

The Dresden Dolls and Stereophonics vs. Jimmy Buffett and Impaled Nazarene: Cabaret hasn't stopped Boston's Dresden Dolls from showing some skin on their Yes, Virginia ... digipak; just look to songs like "Sex Changes" and "First Orgasm" for proof. They get some help from the 'Phonics, who cram 20 nuggets into the two-disc Live From Dakota, which the Brits are putting out on their own Vox Populi imprint. Buffett heads to the Stereophonics' homeland with "Werewolves of London," which appears on the "Hoot" soundtrack; but things are noticeably grittier up north in Finland, where death-metal maniacs Impaled Nazarene send up "One Dead Nation Under Dead God" and "Goat Sodomy" as part of their Pro Patria Finlandia.

Winners: After the other side passes out from too many margaritas and too much animal intercourse, the Dresden Dolls and Stereophonics are the last ones standing.

Round Six: Evil vs. Good

Rye Coalition and Killing Joke vs. the Church and Dio: Indie-rock vets Rye Coalition stuck true to their roots and pulled off a heroic feat by nabbing Curses — their fourth, Dave Grohl-produced record — back from Interscope, breaking their contract with the major label but retaining ownership of the LP all the same (now the record's dropping on underground imprint Gern Blandsten). Backing up Rye are Killing Joke, who holed up in a basement in Prague and used tape-echo machines dating back to 1979 to craft their nine-track Hosannas From the Basement of Hell. On God's side are the Church, who recorded their Uninvited Like the Clouds last summer in Sydney; and Dio, who's Holy Diver Live gives him an excuse to recap hits like "Stand Up and Shout" and "Heaven and Hell," the latter of which he originally tracked with the very unholy Black Sabbath. (Completing the circle, Grohl played drums on Tenacious D's tribute track "Dio.")

Winners: Daniel Johnston — whose documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" precipitated this week's Welcome to My World: The Music of Daniel Johnston archival set — dives into the ring and pile-drives the Church and Dio. Who says Satan can't cheat?

Main Prize: Hogs all around for the winners! There's Demolition Doll Rods' There Is a Difference, plus reissues of the Knights' Hot Rod High and Mr. Gasser and the Weirdos' Hot Rod Hootenanny and Rods N' Rat Finks. Now that's a hootenanny.

Song Title of the Week:

Finally over British media hassles about the controversial departure of drummer Stuart Cable, Stereophonics are back strong with their fifth album, Language. Sex. Violence. Other? and are bringing the punk-infused release on the road.

Change doesn't seem to have hurt the South Wales band, who scored its first U.K. #1 single in March of this year with the release of "Dakota." Even with the success of that song, people are still talking about the group's difficult lineup changes, and frontman Kelly Jones is tired of it.

"An ideal story isn't it?" the singer/guitarist asked. "You come from the middle of nowhere, become this big band, and the press goes, 'Then the moody lead singer sacks everybody, and it all gets sh--.' And you are like, 'Well, OK. You can pick that angle if you want, but there's a lot of other stuff [that] went on.' I've dealt with my sh--. I don't really need to keep on talking about it. I was on the bus for 10 years — I know what's gone on."

The fracture with Cable didn't come as a surprise to Jones. He said it was actually in the cards for a while — though he does admit that it's a shame, like the end of any good relationship. For him, picking up and moving on was the only option.

Former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman initially filled in for Cable (who was fired from the band in September 2003) for several tour dates. Javier Weyler became Cable's permanent replacement late last year, though they met the Argentinean in 2003.

New guy Weyler says he was pleasantly surprised by the support he was met with. "It's quite difficult when you think about it. Obviously Stu was a massive part of [their history]. And Steve was filling in for a long time, and people become attached to that as well. It's quite difficult to live up to that expectation, [but] it has been great because everyone has been really supportive and open about it. Obviously, I'm just trying to do my job as good as possible."

The changes made have given Kelly Jones a sense of newness to the group, which he formed in 1992 with schoolmates Cable and Richard Jones (bass). "There's an element of how we felt in the first record because of the freshness," Kelly Jones explained. "It was all brand-new to Javier, so we're seeing it all brand new through him again — and that's quite refreshing." The frontman added that though the band had traveled to Japan more than a dozen times, the new drummer (who had never been there) made going back exciting.

No need to grab these guys some Mentos, because Weyler is feeling the freshness as well — both onstage and in the studio. "It has been really fresh," Weyler confirmed. "And the other thing is, I don't feel like I have only played [a few] shows at all. It feels like I've been playing for longer, which is a really odd thing that I still don't understand. I just prefer to go along with it."

The newbie and his group will have plenty of time to vibe on the road as they head out on a North American tour that runs through early June. "We've always been touring and traveling," Kelly Jones explained. "We play loads of shows, come home about 18 months later, go back into [the] studio, make a record, go out and play some shows. We're not away for the full 18 months. It's not like an Iron Maiden tour — you do go back and forth in between. We'd like to be away for 18 months in one go, but we can't afford it!"

Will Smith has a reputation for turning his singles into dance-class lesson plans, and with "Switch," the debut single off his new Lost and Found, Smith again commands faithful fans to pay close attention — there will be a test on the dance floor.

After teaching listeners how to "bounce with me" in 1997's "Men in Black," and illustrating how to "Nod Ya Head" in 2002, the rapper/actor unveils his newest move in "Switch": "Switch, turn it over and hit it/ Turn around, now switch." Lost and Found is the rapper-turned-actor-turned-rapper's first album since 2002's Born to Reign.

Meanwhile, the members of Beanie Sigel's State Property camp might be going their separate ways and he may be behind bars, but none of that can stop the Philadelphia MC, who returns to stores this week. Beanie's The B. Coming features work that the rapper did before he was jailed in November of last year on weapons charges.

Beck has shown that he's a quick learner: The singer picked up swiftly on "The O.C." 's unprecedented power to make albums fly off shelves, unveiling five cuts off his new album, Guero, on a recent episode of the show. The album is Beck's first since 2002's super mellow Sea Change and hits stores on the heels of the single "E-Pro."

Embattled rapper the Game unveils West Coast Resurrection, an album of cuts spanning from his early days up to the release of The Documentary.

From the soul-infused hip-hop group that brought you the sultry single "Peaches & Cream" in 2002 comes Pleasure and Pain. 112's fifth album features production by Mario Winans, Trackboyz and others, as well as the first single "U Already Know."

Highly buzzed-about, heavily eye-lined New York rockers the Bravery release their new-wave-inspired self-titled debut this week. Meanwhile, Morrissey fans still sulking over the fact that they missed the singer's recent tour will be happy to hear that a live album hits stores this week. Live at Earl's Court features songs like "How Soon Is Now?," "Shoplifters of the World Unite" and "Friday Mourning."

South Wales-bred Stereophonics release their punk- and funk-infused album Language. Sex. Violence. Other? Also out this week are albums by 4th Avenue Jones (Stereo: The Evolution of Hiprocksoul), Aslyn (Lemon Love), Thrice (If Only We Could See Us Now) and Theory of a Deadman (Gasoline).

It could have turned into the most infamous battle royal since the Rock took on Stone Cold, but Ozzy Osbourne's wife and manager, Sharon Osbourne, has apologized to British group Stereophonics for calling them the "Stereo-whatever-the-f----they're-called."
In a May 5 article on British music tabloid NME's Web site, Osbourne complained that Stereophonics booked a show at Donington Park, and had "a clause in their f---ing contract preventing anyone else from playing there this summer." Ozzfest was thus unable to reclaim Donington, which Ozzy hasn't played since 1996, as the "home of metal."
Throughout the early 1990s, Donington was the site of a
yearly music festival that featured metal and hard-rock bands including Metallica, Fear Factory, Kiss, Slayer and White Zombie.

Representatives for Stereophonics could not be reached for
comment.

In a letter of apology sent to NME, Osbourne referred to herself as the "Queen of Evil" with a "big f---ing mouth and a crass attitude." She then referred to the Stereophonics with a slightly more complimentary use of the f-word, calling them one of the "greatest bands in the world."
In a post-script to this piece of heavy-metal diplomacy, Osbourne said, "After Ozzy heard what had happened I had to go to the hospital to have his foot taken out of my ass."
Osbourne's publicist had no comment. Ozzfest will hit Milton Keynes on May 26, while Stereophonics play Donington on July 14.

No word yet on whether the RIAA plans to begin putting parental-advisory stickers on managers.

David Bowie, Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow and Phish are just a few of the artists paying homage to the Who on the tribute album Substitute the Songs of the Who.

Scheduled for a June 12 release, the 11-track LP culls songs from the legendary band's more-than-25-year career, beginning with their 1965 mod anthem "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" (performed here by Ocean Colour Scene), through 1971's classic rock staple "Behind Blue Eyes" (Sheryl Crow), and 1978's "Who Are You," the title track from the band's final album with original drummer Keith Moon, given the cover treatment by Welsh rockers Stereophonics.

The Who themselves get a chance to pat their own backs with a live version of "Substitute," recorded during a December benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall with a little help from Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones. Pearl Jam contribute a live cut as well with their rendition of "The Kids Are Alright."
Substitute the Songs of the Who is the first Who tribute record officially sanctioned by guitarist and principal songsmith Pete Townshend. The band's longtime soundman Bob Pridden, credited as the tribute's executive producer, came up with the idea for the album after recording Liverpool quartet Cast's version of "The Seeker" for an album B-side. With the notion of a tribute in mind, Pridden then approached Townshend for his blessing, and from there the LP took shape.
In February, the Who — whose original lineup was Townshend, singer Roger Daltrey, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Moon, who died in 1978 — received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards ceremony.
The track listing (not in final order) for Substitute the Songs of the Who, according to the album's publicist:
Cast - "The Seeker"
Ocean Colour Scene - "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere"
Paul Weller - "Circles"
David Bowie - "Pictures of Lily"
Pearl Jam - "The Kids Are Alright"
UnAmerican - "Naked Eye"
Stereophonics - "Who Are You"
Phish - "5:15"

The Stereophonics have bowed to corporate pressure and have changed the name of their upcoming album from J.E.E.P. to the more explicit Just Enough Education to Perform.
German auto maker Daimler Chrysler, who owns the copyright on the Jeep brand of vehicles, has refused to allow the Welsh trio to use J.E.E.P. as the album's title, according to a statement issued Monday by the U.K. branch of the band's label, V2 Records.

"Both V2 and the band were surprised when Daimler Chrysler objected to the use of J.E.E.P. following an approach by V2 for permission to explore cross-promotional activities with the Jeep brand," the statement read. "Daimler Chrysler has since decided to refuse permission for the album to be known as J.E.E.P., and while both V2 and the band are extremely disappointed by this decision, we have reluctantly decided to accede to their request."
Heather May, Chrysler's U.S. manager of Jeep platform and brand communications, said that while she was unaware of the Stereophonics conflict, this kind of action by the car maker was not uncommon.

"Jeep is a registered trademark of Daimler Chrysler and identifies a specific brand," May said. "So, just as you couldn't call a book or record 'Xerox,' 'Kleenex' or even 'Coca-Cola,' you can't title something 'Jeep.' It's a proper brand name, and anyone who wants to use the name Jeep would have to clear it through the legal department."
The real rub for the Stereophonics is that the acronym has nothing to do with automobiles, and instead refers to a British military phrase the band's frontman, Kelly Jones, copped from his brother.

"J.E.E.P. was a phrase that my brother wrote on his bedroom wall when he was about 18 and he'd been in the army," Jones explained last fall. "It was taken from there, and it was written as 'Just Enough Education to Perform.' I felt it could mean so many different things rather than, y'know, everybody learns just enough to get by in life.

"The way the music industry is at the moment, [the title] has multiple meanings for me, and I thought it was a really good title," Jones continued. "That's what we wrote in the board while making the record, and it never got beaten by another title."
Regardless of the title, the new Stereophonics album is due April 17, while the first single, "Mr. Writer," will be released to radio on April 23.

NEW YORK — The Black Crowes celebrated the completion of their new album, Lions, by taking roost at a Manhattan nightclub Saturday and performing a 10-song set in front of a celebrity-studded crowd that included 3 Doors Down, Mick Jagger and Moby.

Taking the stage of The Bank shortly after midnight, frontman Chris Robinson and sibling guitarist Rich Robinson led the Crowes through four new songs to kick off the concert, an invitation-only bash hosted by V2 Records owner Richard Branson.

After premiering Lions tracks "Midnight From the Inside Out," "Lickin'," "Greasy Grass River" and "Young Man, Old Man," the Black Crowes then rolled out several familiar cuts, including "Seeing Things," "HorseHead," "Wiser Time" and "Thorn in My Pride."
With new bassist Andy Hess in tow, the Black Crowes finished up the evening by enlisting foreign aid on a pair of numbers. Gordie Johnson, lead singer and guitarist for Canada's Big Sugar, laid down some slide guitar on a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well."
Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones, a V2 Records labelmate and past UK touring partner of the Black Crowes, helped close out the evening by singing lead vocals on "Twice as Hard," the first track off the Crowes' 1990 debut, Shake Your Money Maker.
According to the Crowes' publicists, producer Don Was, guitarist Peter Frampton, singer Nona Hendryx, glam rock band Spacehog and actors Liv Tyler, Liev Schreiber and Chris Robinson's mother-in-law, Goldie Hawn, were among the guests who turned out for the record completion party.

Produced by Was and recorded at a studio converted from an old Yiddish theatre on Manhattan's Lower East Side, the Black Crowes' Lions is due in mid-May.

Stereophonics To Give U.S. Acoustic Preview Of New LP

Group's tour kicks off February 5 and will feature songs from upcoming J.E.E.P.
By David Basham

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones is eager to step back from the group's "big rock" sound and hit the road with an acoustic guitar, playing songs from his band's upcoming J.E.E.P.
"I decided when I was in the studio that I'd love to go out and tour the way that the songs were written," he said. "I always loved the old folk singers just traveling by a car with one guitar case, just going onstage and playing a few songs. That was something I always wanted to do, so I decided to do it."
A Stateside acoustic outing, kicking off February 5 in Atlanta, will be a sequel of sorts to Jones' tour of the U.K. in November, although this time he'll be joined by (unrelated) bassist Richard Jones and a pair of non-Stereophonics, keyboardist Tony Kirkham and guitarist Scott James.

Jones said the idea for the stripped-down preview trek came to him as the band was recording J.E.E.P. at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Bath, England, and was partially a reaction to large-scale tours the Stereophonics mounted with the Charlatans UK and Our Lady Peace last year.

"It's going to be quiet, with candles and acoustic guitar. Mellow. No big rock, no big lights," he said.

For J.E.E.P., an acronym for "Just Enough Education to Perform," the Stereophonics decided to move away from the plugged-in rock sound of their previous albums, 1999's Performance and Cocktails and 1997's Word Gets Around.
The band instead crafted an acoustic-driven record that has more in common with Neil Young's After the Gold Rush than AC/DC's Back in Black, although the Stereophonics do unleash some fat guitar riffs on J.E.E.P.'s lead track, "Vegas Two Times."
The driving track is based on Jones' experiences in Sin City last year, and it includes references to the city's Crazy Horse Too strip club, as well as the Vietnam veteran taxi driver who shuttled the band around town.

" 'Vegas Two Times' is pretty much the [story of the] time I went to Vegas to see Tom Jones just before we made a video (a cover of 'Mama Told Me Not to Come') with him, and we just had a great night. Then when we tried to leave the next day, we got lost and we ended up leaving Vegas twice, because we actually came back on ourselves and had to leave again.

"The riff I already had," Jones continued, "so I just needed some really cool words, like 'Vegas two times' and 'Vietnam vet.' That was the guy who drove us around. There's always a Vietnam vet driving you around in a taxi there, and 'Crazy Horse Too.' Just some really cool slogans for a song. Not really lyrically deep, but it's a rock and roll song."
The Stereophonics' J.E.E.P. is due on April 17, while the first single, "Mr. Writer," will be released to radio on April 23.
