In case you haven't heard, the formerly unsinkable airship of cash known as the music industry is currently crashing down from the heavens in a ball of flames, hurtling toward the Earth at supersonic speeds. In fact, at this point it's only a matter of time before it smashes into terra firma with the impact of 10,000 atomic bombs, blowing a hole clear through North America, causing the seas to boil and sending clouds of black soot skyward, blotting out the sun and eventually ending life as we know it.

At least that's how the members of Stars see it.

"It's a strange thing to examine on any real level: How do people buy records? I mean, who gives a damn?" frontman Torquil Campbell laughed. "It just goes to show you how dead the music industry really is. Everything is so overanalyzed now. How do people get through the day? Now that's a question to spend some time thinking about."

Given logic like that, it should come as no surprise that Stars — the Canadian quintet that found a sizable audience (and much critical love) with its booming, swooning 2005 effort, Set Yourself on Fire (see "Stars Wear Hearts And Politics On The Sleeves Of Fire") — decided to try something different when it came time to release Fire's follow-up, the icy In Our Bedroom After the War.

And by "something different," we mean turning the industry concepts of release date and album promotion on their ears.

Because while Bedroom won't hit shelves until September 25, the band and its label, Arts & Crafts, made the rather unique decision to make it available for legal download July 10, just four days after receiving the final, mastered copy of the record. It was a move that flew in the face of traditional industry thinking, which has labels sending advance copies of a record out to so-called "long lead" publications (most magazines operate on a three-months-ahead editorial schedule, meaning that right now, several pubs are putting the wraps on their October issues) in order to secure coverage. In theory, that coverage should lead to more sales. The only problem is that those advance copies usually end up leaking all over the Internet, negating many of those potential sales.

"I think it's unfair to ask people to wait an artificial length of time for a piece of art to come out in this day and age. It just doesn't make sense," Campbell said. "The technology has caught up to the media, and if magazines didn't need three months, then there wouldn't be a problem: We could just release the record the week after it was pressed, just the way it [was done] in 1965.

"But the media has grown to such a degree that it's now this machine that moves so slowly, it's almost like it's eating itself. So we're trying to skip underneath that and get to people who just want to pay for a good record and listen to it," he continued. "I stole my friend Leslie Feist's album off the Internet because I was too lazy to go down to the office and pick it up. It's that easy to steal music off the Internet. And I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but I also think there are people who love the band and genuinely want to support the band and have 10 bucks to spare. If you don't give people the option at least to buy a record, then you can't blame them for stealing it."

So far, Stars' plan has worked pretty well: Bedroom sits at #62 on the iTunes Music Store's most-downloaded albums list, ahead of discs from Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall and Velvet Revolver. As far as Stars are concerned, they've figured out a way to make some cash off what is essentially nothing more than an album advance. And both band and label have no idea what will happen when the album hits stores in September.

Other bands in vaguely similar situations as Stars — acts like the Shins — found that the early leaking didn't hamper sales. In fact, some might say it helped; the Shins' Wincing the Night Away bowed at #2 back in January, selling more than 118,000 copies (see "Pretty Ricky Thwart Shins' Quest For Billboard Glory"). But will Stars' smaller fanbase show up to buy physical copies of the album, or will the gamble backfire?

"The music business is alive and well. The record business is having some troubles, for sure, but the release of new music from an artist will always be the point upon which we'll begin the celebration," Arts & Crafts co-owner Jeff Remedios said. "All we're trying to do is give fans choices. I think that if I were a 15-year-old Stars fan, I might buy some songs now, but I'd wait for the beautiful double-vinyl package that I know is coming, and I'd support my local independent retailer and go get that."

Not everyone is as optimistic. A July 18 essay on industry blog Coolfer pointed out the overall lack of media attention surrounding Bedroom's early release as an example of why the industry-standard release plan should remain the industry standard — but it wouldn't be that big of a stretch to say that Stars find themselves standing on the precipice of a whole new way of doing business in an industry frantically searching for just that.

And even if their grand strategy fails, at least it's better than the alternative.

"I would encourage people to steal [the album] as well," Campbell said. "Go to the store and steal it if you don't have the money. If you have the guts. I believe people should defile and steal art and use it like it's theirs. Because it is theirs."

A few years ago — well, back in 334 B.C., actually — Alexander the Great's Greek army defeated Persian King Darius III in the Battle of the Granicus. Now, on the Tuesday (May 22) anniversary of that feat, a fierce battalion of new releases barrel their way into stores. Lower the drawbridge — this week is going to be one serious battle royal.

Expect the most damage to be done by top generals in three genres, with Young Jeezy and his USDA crew representing the rap set, Maroon 5 suiting up (ever-spiffily) for the pop denizens, and Ozzy Osbourne rising from his coffin once again to power up the metalheads.

Here's the battle plan:

It's Getting Cold in Herre: Young Jeezy Presents USDA: Cold Summer is pretty much all about them — at last, Jeez Louise is getting to introduce his obligatory rap group, which also features Slick Pulla and Blood Raw. The only featured guests of note are Jadakiss and Bun B, who surface on a bonus-track remix of "Go Getta." Other ice-cold tracks include "Corporate Thuggin'," "Quickie" and "I Keep Tellin' Myself." No indication yet of which member is telling himself what.

Color Them Sadd?: At first glance, Maroon 5 don't seem particularly thrilled to be back — their sophomore LP is led by "If I Never See Your Face Again" and also features "Not Falling Apart" and "Better That We Break." But there are signs of hope on It Won't Be Soon Before Long, which follows their ridiculously auspicious debut (read: four times platinum), Songs About Jane: Frontman Adam Levine — who croons, "Give me something to believe in," on the band's "Makes Me Wonder" single — has promised that the album is more upbeat. So what about the LP title? "It can mean whatever you want it to mean, but don't spend too much time thinking about it," the band said in a statement. Roger, loud and clear.

Ozzsome: Ozzy's studio-album sales have been slipping in recent years — 1995's Ozzmosis went double platinum and its successor, 2004's Down to Earth, only pushed about a million copies. But the Ozzman is packing some extra insurance this time around: Inside limited copies of his Black Rain is a ticket code that should make your entry to Ozzfest — oops, sorry, FreeFest — easier. While we'd kill to see Osbourne reprise either Michael Douglas or Andy Garcia's New York cop roles in a remake of the 1989 flick of the same name, we'll be satisfied with Ozzy's musical deluge instead. Only Joan Osbourne and her Time Life release Breakfast in Bed stand in his way.

Would They Lie to You?: The Used finally delivered their live CD/DVD package Berth in February — a year or so late — but they're back just three months later with Lies for the Liars, their first studio effort in two and a half years. This one is padded with a bonus DVD too — well, the special edition is, at least (it has special casing and a larger booklet as well) — but has high expectations to measure up to: Its predecessor, 2004's In Love and Death, sold more than 3 million copies. In case that isn't enough Used goods for you, the band's going to cough up a yet-untitled EP of Lies outtakes in the coming months.

Strange Connections: AFI, who are often mentioned in the same breath as the Used, are surreptitiously connected to a couple of releases this week. Jade Puget, who has played guitar for the band for almost a decade, helped produce the debut album by AFI tour partners the Dear & Departed. Another act hailing from Orange County, California, the Appearance, are also stepping up this week with their first effort — which was recorded with AFI producer/engineer Chris Fudurich.

Also cropping up this week — even though they don't have any new original material out — are Metric. They chalk up a reworked version of Stars' "He Lied About Death" for the band's Do You Trust Your Friends? comp, which also features Apostle of Hustle, the Dears and the Stills. Frontwoman Emily Haines is slipping out her new EP, What Is Free to a Good Home? exclusively on iTunes this week, with a CD version dropping July 24. The set features five songs that didn't make the cut on her Knives Don't Have Your Back debut LP, as well as a remix of the album track "Mostly Waving." And tour pals the Death of a Party pipe up from San Francisco to christen Double Negative Records with the first album released by either party, The Rise and Fall of Scarlet City.

Who Are You?: Expect to find a few people you might know in a few places you might not expect this week. If you're a Wolf Parade fan, don't overlook Handsome Furs' Plague Park — the Vancouver, British Columbia, duo is actually WP co-founder Dan Boeckner and his fiancee. Likewise, Ramones aficionados should take a peek at Uncle Monk, the introduction to the bluegrass two-piece of the same name, which features Tommy Ramone. Fiction Plane, who churn out Left Side of the Brain, are fronted by Sting's son Joe Sumner, while Young James Long is actually a new disguise for underground stalwart P.W. Long — he gets a hand from Taylor Young of the Polyphonic Spree on You Ain't Know the Man.

Elsewhere, Mike Gordon and Gordon Stone put a Phish shine on Adrienne Young's Room to Grow; and members of Get Up Kids, the New Amsterdams, Hot Rod Circuit and more help ex-Anniversary member Josh Berwanger with his Only Children's Keeper of Youth. Oh, and a couple of artists are leaving familiar folds so they can make their own solo outings: Meg Baird takes a breather from Espers to push her first opus, Dear Companion. And Tim Armstrong finally puts out his A Poet's Life — which has been available for free online since mid-April — in CD form (with a bonus DVD so you can get your money's worth).

Out of Sight: Deeper within the dense thicket of this week's releases lie a handful of titles that won't be screaming at you from the ends of the record racks. Metal spazz-out fiends the Number Twelve Looks Like You crank out a limited-edition four-track EP through Hot Topic featuring the new song "Sleeping With the Fishes, See?" Equally far-out electro-experimentalist Cex ekes out just 1,000 copies of his new Sketchi LP through Temporary Residence. Mont de Sundua — a clangy rock project courtesy My Morning Jacket's Jim James and members of the Insects — issue an eponymous LP that's only available at select Think Indie consortium record stores. And if you're into the whole multi-channel thing, Mobile Fidelity has a treat for you: The Super Audio CD version of the Pixies' watershed album, Surfer Rosa.

Song Title of the Week:

"Guess the Baby's Weight" from Young Knives' Weekends and Bleak Days

Other Notables:

Battles' Mirrored
After four warm-up EPs, the New York band comprising members of Tomahawk, Helmet and Don Caballero has finally mustered up the guts to put out a proper album — and The Guardian and Pitchfork have been falling head over heels for it. The band incorporates lyrics for the first time on the math-rock release, which features "Leyendecker," "Prismism" and "Ddiamondd."

The National's Boxer
Battles' fellow New Yorkers the National are a bit further along in the game — they're dropping their fourth album this week. The indie rockers have also been getting lots of Pitchfork love, and they primed their new material on MTV's 24-hour "Human Giant" marathon Saturday morning. The ever-prolific Sufjan Stevens notches another album credit on the full-length, which includes "Mistaken for Strangers," "Racing Like a Pro" and "Fake Empire."

Boris with Michio Kurihara's Rainbow
After hooking up with doom-metallers SunnO))) and a fleet of their Japanese experimental-noisemaking peers, including multiple stints with Merzbow, it's only right that Boris finally set up camp with Ghost guitarist Kurihara. The U.S. version of the album has a different closing song than the Japanese edition — we get "No Sleep Till I Become Hollow," they got "... And, I Want."

When Stars set out to record their latest album, the dramatic and lush Set Yourself on Fire, the group had sexual healing in mind, but the plan was quickly derailed when the band took note of their surroundings.

"The goal was to make a sex record," singer Torquil Campbell said. "But when I started writing the lyrics, it got screwed up by what was going on in the world. So we made a death and sex record instead."

While occasionally libidinous, the Montreal quartet is incurably romantic through and through. And while Stars might not scream adolescent anguish at full volume or induce legions of teenage fans to recite their lyrics in fist-pumping robotic unison à la Dashboard Confessional, that doesn't mean they aren't equally emo in their own precious and grandiose way.

"We wanted to make something so beautiful that you could actually get married to it," Campbell said of Fire, the group's third full-length.

A multi-tiered metaphor for political and lovelorn desperate measures, Set Yourself on Fire doesn't see Stars simply wearing their hearts on their sleeves — they dress themselves head to toe in passionate emotions.

"It seems to be the only response to the endless cycle of evil, horror and madness that the world is being subsumed by," Campbell said, referencing the war in Iraq that was in full swing when Fire was recorded. "We need to start to burn; we need to sacrifice our sense of comfort and ego to speak up or the devils will keep on taking over."

But for every moment of enraged polemics, Fire also contemplates resignation with all matters of the heart. "When you fall in love you die a little bit, you give a little bit of yourself up, but you're also reborn in their eyes," Campbell said. "You get a new life as their [significant other]. That's what keeps us going in life; we keep on setting ourselves on fire and starting again until we were embers and blow away."

Centering on timeless female splendor, the album's first single, "Ageless Beauty," found inspiration in one of their favorite standbys, '90s noisy dream-rockers My Bloody Valentine. "We were listening to [MBV's] Loveless — surprise, surprise," Campbell chuckled. The unadorned but elegant performance video was shot by Chris Grismer, who also lensed videos for fellow Canadians the Arcade Fire and Death From Above 1979.

A second video is already waiting in the wings. Directed by another compatriot — labelmates Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew — the album's bittersweet overture, "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead," was filmed in wintry Montreal and almost caused the group to get hypothermia during the shoot. "It's a ghost story about a guy who goes skating every night to meet his dead lover on the frozen pond," Campbell said of the visually evocative and poetic video. "And they dance together for a while, but then death comes for them and he goes up in flames."

Sung with a heavy heart yet a glimmer of hope, the song is classic melancholy Stars. "It's about realizing how sad it is to fall in love with someone and then fall out of love with them and what a terrible disappointment that is," Campbell said. Apropos considering Fire was born not only from politicized exasperation, but also from the breakup of singer/guitarist Amy Milan and keyboardist Chris Seligman. "It's about separation," Milan said with a thoughtful pause before trailing off. "And no comment."

But unlike most heartbreak songs, Stars don't deal in soliloquies. Exchanging monologues for dialogue, both Campbell and Milan sing and weave melodic conversations that keep their perspective on the love song unique. "Rather than just having a guy saying, 'I'm sad 'cause you left me,' you also have the woman saying, 'I left you 'cause you're a complete spazz,' so there's that reality of both sides of the story happening that we like," he said.

Though the balance of love and politics seems like a strange tightrope to walk, Campbell finds the link between the political and the emotional intrinsic and undeniable.

"If you don't think about love and understand its importance in everyday life, then you can't talk about social change or social justice or revolution or any of those things because they're linked to a respect for other people. In this world, you can't be in love without thinking about the fact that someone else is dying."

Characteristically, Stars don't want you to like their record — they hope it has a profound impact on your life. "I just want [the audience] to have a reaction to it, and hopefully it will make them feel more alive and brings out the parts of the lives that are strange, amazing and beautiful."

Stars are on a North American tour that hits Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club on Friday, Brooklyn, New York's Southpaw on Saturday, Philadelphia's Theatre of Living Arts on Sunday and Boston's Paradise on Tuesday.
