As they prepare a new album, the North Carolina jazz revisionists in Squirrel Nut Zippers took the time to visit "Sesame Street" recently.

The band spent quality time with Grover and a host of Muppets while performing a reworked version of its 1997 single "Put A Lid On It."

The group hits a supper club on Sesame Street (yes, apparently they have supper clubs) and uses its performance to soothe a customer who grows increasingly frustrated with Grover's lackluster abilities as a waiter.

The band's "Sesame Street" appearance will debut on Friday, April 21 and will air again on June 9.

The Zippers follow in the footsteps of the Goo Goo Dolls, R.E.M., Ben Stiller, Garth Brooks, Gloria Estefan, and other notables to visit the Muppets on their home turf in recent years.

In less Muppet-oriented news for the band, the Zippers expect to release their new album (the band's first since the departure of guitarist and vocalist Tom Maxwell)
in late summer with a tour to follow. Saxophonist Tim Smith, trombonist Dave Wright, and pianist Reese Gray have been added to the fold, and the group finished recording its as-yet-untitled new album last fall in New Orleans.

A revamped version of the Squirrel Nut Zippers will be heading out for a brief series of concert dates to promote the group's seasonal "Christmas Caravan" CD and to presumably road-test material for a new album to be released in 2000.
Tim Smith (sax), Dave Wright (trombone), and Reese Gray (piano) have joined the Zippers' Jim Mathus (vocals, guitar, tenor banjo, piano), Katherine Whalen (vocals, banjo, ukulele), Je Widenhouse (trumpet), Chris Phillips (drums), and Stu Cole (string bass) in the new lineup.
The group lost vocalist-guitarist Tom Maxwell to a solo career earlier this year, and multi-instrumentalist Ken Mosher followed suit in October (see "Former Squirrel Nut Zippers' Frontman Releases Limited Edition Album").
The SNZ's official Web site reports that the band has just wrapped up recording its fourth LP at New Orleans' Kingsway Studios, although a spokesperson for the band's label, Mammoth, says that recording
is halfway completed and the band will return to the studio at home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in January. The CD is expected out in August, which will accommodate the pending birth of Whalen and Mathus' baby, due in April.
In other Squirrel Nut Zippers news, the group's management confirms that a trademark infringement lawsuit launched against the band by the company that manufactures the candy bar that spawned the band's moniker is still pending, though a lawyer for Southern Style Nuts says the case should be settled in a matter of days.
Attorney Dale Sissney told MTV News that an agreement is in place that just requires "crossing the t's and dotting the i's." The suit, quietly launched by the Squirrel Brand Corporation in 1998 and continued when the company was purchased by Southern Style Nuts early this year, caused the cancellation of live dates this past summer and inspired a spate of solo projects. The litigation meant that the band was briefly referred to as the
Squirrel Not Zippers; the pending mini-tour will see business as usual.
The trek kicks off in Philadelphia this coming Sunday and includes a December 6 appearance at the kick-off party for the movie "Cradle Will Rock." The band is also booked for a December 8 performance on "Live With Regis & Kathie Lee."
To catch Squirrel Nut Zippers on the road, here's where to go:

12/5 - Philadelphia, PA @ Theater Of The Living Arts
12/7- New York, NY @ Irving Plaza
12/14 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club
12/16 - Carrboro, NC @ The Cat's Cradle
12/31 - Seattle, WA @ Stadium Exhibition Center

Five months after leaving the Squirrel Nut Zippers, former frontman Tom Maxwell has taken to the Web to release a special limited edition of his new solo album, "Samsara," the regular version of which is due out next spring.
Maxwell recorded the album, which takes its title from a Buddhist term for the endless cycle of desire and dissatisfaction, in March at Kingsway Studios in New Orleans. He was assisted by Zippers bassist Chris Phillips and guitarist Ken Mosher, who recently quit the Squirrel Nut Zippers himself. The Dirty Dozen's Julius McKee also guests on the album.
Musically, "Samsara" is described as a mixture of everything from New Orleans jazz to Chinese opera, and Maxwell, a virtual one-man band who penned the Zippers' biggest hit, "Hell," sings and plays guitar, bass, alto sax, drums, clarinet, and cymbals on his new LP.
The multi-instrumentalist has made 1,000 copies of the album available via his Web site (www.tommaxwell.com)
and has personally signed and numbered each copy.
Maxwell split from the Squirrel Nut Zippers in early July, right after he and Mosher came off the road from playing in the Ben Folds Five's backing band (see "Tom Maxwell Leaves Squirrel Nut Zippers").

After six years with Squirrel Nut Zippers, singer-songwriter Tom Maxwell has decided to leave the band in order to pursue a solo career.
A representative for the Zippers told MTV News that the group plans to continue on without Maxwell, who sang lead vocals on the band's biggest hit to date, "Hell," from its 1996 LP, "Hot."
The remaining Squirrel Nut Zippers will head into a studio in October to start recording its new album, the follow-up to 1998's Yuletide collection, "Christmas Caravan."
In a statement announcing his departure to fans, Maxwell wrote: "I can say in all honesty that I left the band with an open heart, harboring neither ill-will or resentment. Basically, all things must pass and it was time to go... In my letter to my bandmates I said that who I am as a musician is a result of the Squirrel Nut Zippers... In the future, I will continue to hold myself to the high musical standard set by the [band]."
No word yet on when Maxwell plans to deliver a solo
record or with whom he might work with, although the Zippers' Ken Mosher wrote on the band's official Web site that he would "continue to work with [Tom] if he needs me."
Maxwell, Mosher, and the Zippers' Je Widenhouse had just completed a road stint as backing musicians for Ben Folds Five's summer tour when Maxwell made his decision to leave the Zippers.

Squirrel Nut Zippers singer Katherine Whalen is putting out a solo album May 25 titled "Katharine Whalen's Jazz Squad" and is planning a short tour with a band of the same name beginning in June. The group features three other members of the Zippers, namely co-founder Jim Mathus (vocals, guitar, trombone), Stu Cole (bass) and Je Widenhouse (trumpet) as well as another five local players from hometown Chapel Hill, NC, namely Robert Griffin, Ted Zaras, Cecil Johnson, John Kennedy and Mike Mingus.
A press release announcing the project notes that the shy Whalen has come a long way. The Squirrel Nut Zippers were not only her first band, but her appearances with them marked the first time she had sung in public at all.
The Zippers' Tom Maxwell is planning a solo album as well, but no recording dates are set and a producer has not been picked. Additionally, Maxwell has also penned a cover story on Ben Folds Five for the April issue of CMJ magazine, which sources say is very humorous.

Maxwell and Ken Mosher will both appear on several cuts on the pending Ben Folds Five album, "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner," due in late April.
The Zippers themselves are expected to reconvene late this year, or early next.
In related news, Maxwell and producer John Plymale, who also was at the helm for Whelan's solo album, have put together an album called "Legacy," a tribute to the Zippers' former horn player Stacy Guess, who died a year ago this month. The record contains some of Guess's well known projects as well as his more avant garde work. It includes two Squirrel Nut Zippers songs previously only available on limited edition collector's items, as well as tracks by The Pressure Boys, Soma and Venus Flytrap Girls among others. The proceeds are being donated to a Stacy Guess scholarship fund. The album is due out March 18.

When the Squirrel Nut Zippers say that they don't want to be considered part of the neo-swing movement, you better listen up.
The Zippers recently took themselves off the bill of a Boston radio station-sponsored Christmas show because they were asked to share a stage with swing revivalists the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
WBCN, which is hosting the multi-band, multi-club event, had both acts scheduled to perform on December 1 at the Roxy. When the Zippers found out last week that they'd be sharing a bill with the Daddies, they asked to be put on a separate stage. The station responded by threatening to pull their current single, "Trou Macacq," off the air, which resulted in the group taking a walk, and thus the controversy escalated.
It started with WBCN's program director Oedipus getting quoted in the "Boston Globe" as saying he thought the Zippers' current album, "Perennial Favorites," was a stiff and that the group "might be afraid of how hard the Cherry Poppin' Daddies rock."

The Zippers' singer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Maxwell responds by saying, "We are disappointed that with 10 stages at their disposal, WBCN couldn't put us on a musically diverse bill. We have no problem with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, however, we collectively made a decision a long time ago to avoid anything tied to the so-called swing movement. It is also unfortunate that WBCN threatened to pull our current single off of the air if we didn't perform. They have now pulled the song and lowered themselves to bashing us in the press. We appreciate the support that radio has given the band, but our lives and careers will move on with or without WBCN."
The show will go on as well, with Harvey Danger on the bill, at a different venue called, Axis. Ticket holders will receive $10 back at the door or a refund at the point of purchase. Their own headlining tour, in support of "Perennial Favorites," ends on New Year's Eve in the Washington DC area at George Mason Patriot Center in Fairfax,
Virginia.

It's only September, but the Squirrel Nut Zippers are already well into in the Christmas spirit.

The Zippers have finished recording a new Christmas album, entitled "Christmas Caravan," which is due out on October 27 on Mammoth Records. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based band just released its newest studio album, "Perennial Favorites," a little over a month ago.

The Yuletide album will feature eight new songs and several cover tunes, including "Winter Weather" by Fats Waller, an instrumental version of "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson and Mitchell Parish, and "Hanging Up My Stockings," a song originally written by the grandfather of Zipper's drummer Chris Phillips.

True to the band's form, the original songs range in sound and style from bluesy rock to jazz and swing, and sample titles include "Christmas in Carolina," "Indian Giver" and "Johnny Ace Christmas."

The Zipper's Christmas songs were completed in July at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway Studios in New
Orleans. Though there are no plans to shoot any videos as of press time, the group does intend to perform some of their Christmas numbers on various television shows during the holiday season.

In related news, the Dust Brothers have just finished remixing the Zippers' current single, "The Suits Are Picking Up the Bill," and the new version will be released to radio next week.
