NEW YORK — During his introduction at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (October 29), Tom Hanks brought up a good question: "Does rock and roll need a hall of fame?" He immediately arrived at his answer. "Yes. After 50 years of rock and roll, yes." The next five hours were spent backing up Hanks' statement, with performances by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel and Bruce Springsteen (plus a bevy of special guests), all saluting the now-storied history of rock and roll.

Ostensibly, the theme of the night was to bring together seminal rock acts and their influences for a series of greatest hits and all-star jams (Paul Simon brought out old-school bopper Dion for a trip through "Runaround Sue," while Springsteen welcomed legendary singer and bandleader Sam Moore), but the most inspired moments from the show came when artists decided to look to the future (or at least the present) rather than salute the past. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello joined Springsteen for a loud, thumping electric version of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" (complete with Morello's signature guitar scratching), while Wonder brought out John Legend for a trip through Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and an extended tribute to Michael Jackson on "The Way You Make Me Feel."

Following Hanks' introduction (his production company, Playtone, was producing the show for HBO, which will air the concert on November 29), the curtain rose on Jerry Lee Lewis, the 74-year-old rock legend who sat behind a piano to pound out "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." He was followed by the first of many montages of moments in rock history (Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar, Elvis Presley on "The Ed Sullivan Show") mashed up with signature moments from the 20th century (Martin Luther King, Vietnam).

Crosby, Stills and Nash ran through a workmanlike set of their own hits and covers, bringing on contemporaries Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor for a few collaborations (including a blistering run through the Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider" and an all-hands-on-deck jam through "Teach Your Children"). Paul Simon's set was more straightforward: He kicked it off with "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and didn't stray far from his jukebox full of hits for the next 45 minutes. Longtime collaborator Art Garfunkel harmonized with Simon on classics like "The Sound of Silence" and "The Boxer," and while their individual voices sounded weathered by age, the harmonies remained as sweet and haunting as ever.

Stevie Wonder overcame technical difficulties at the beginning of his set (nobody could seem to provide him with a microphone that worked) to deliver a hit-filled, star-studded performance that stole the evening. In addition to his team-up with Legend, Wonder also brought on Smokey Robinson (whose sweet croon infused "The Tracks of My Tears" with a stunning grace) and B.B. King (whose run through "The Thrill Is Gone" proved that his voice still has that perfect combination of gravel and honey, even at 84 years old). Perhaps the evening's most surreal moment came when Wonder introduced Sting, who played bass and sang with the R&B legend on an inspired mash-up of Wonder's "Higher Ground" and the Police's "Roxanne."

The night closed with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's typically epic set. Following a sweaty "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," Springsteen just kept hitting peaks: Duets with John Fogerty and Darlene Love, a cover of the Clash's "London Calling," a surprise appearance by Billy Joel (who jammed on three songs) and a final, everybody-and-their-mother grand finale "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher." It was well after 1 a.m. by the time Springsteen bid the crowd goodnight, but the case had been made long before that: Yes, rock and roll does need a hall of fame, and the evening's performers proved that they were the reason why.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band canceled their Monday night show at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, following the death on Monday of the band leader's cousin, who had worked as the band's assistant road manager for the past 10 years.

According to a statement posted on the official E Street site, Springsteen's cousin Lenny Sullivan died at the age of 36 of undisclosed causes.

"A warm and sensitive person, he was beloved by Bruce, the Band, the crew, and the entire Thrill Hill family," read the statement. "Bruce and the Band deeply appreciate the understanding of our Kansas City audience and look forward to returning at the earliest opportunity."

The Kansas City Star reported that Sullivan was found dead at Kansas City's Intercontinental Hotel just three hours before the group was slated to perform. A spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department said officers were investigating the death, which they did not believe was suspicious.

The announcement of the show cancellation came just 90 minutes before the scheduled 7:30 start time, after the gear had already been loaded in and just minutes before the doors were going to open for fans.

The E Street Band's next scheduled gig is Thursday night at Madison Square Garden for the opening night of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concerts, where Simon & Garfunkel (and Paul Simon's solo act); Crosby, Stills, Nash & Friends; and Stevie Wonder are also set to perform. It was announced on Monday that Eric Clapton, who was slated to perform at Friday night's show, has pulled out because of gallbladder surgery; he will be replaced by fellow English guitar legend Jeff Beck.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will celebrate its 25th anniversary in style on October 29 and 30 with a pair of all-star shows at Madison Square Garden.

On the bill for the first night are Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band; Simon & Garfunkel; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Friends; Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. The next night will feature sets from Metallica, U2, Eric Clapton and Aretha Franklin, plus more performers to be announced in the coming weeks.

All the acts on the bill are Rock Hall inductees, and the announcement of the show promises that the "music legends and their special guests will be your guides through 60 years of rock and roll history."

Net proceeds from the show will go to create a permanent endowment for the Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. A highlight special from the two-night show will be screened on HBO. General-public tickets will go on sale August 3, but title sponsor American Express is offering cardholders a presale from July 27 to August 2 that features VIP packages priced from $750 to $100,000.

Rolling Stone magazine reported that the shows will feature a number of collaborations, including CSN sharing the stage with other California-based artists, Metallica leading a hard-rock jam, and Wonder and Franklin fronting a soul revue backed by Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

As noted in The New York Times, the math on the anniversary date is a bit fuzzy, as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was founded in 1983 and the first induction ceremony was in January 1986. Among the creative consultants on the show are actor Tom Hanks, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, rock icon Robbie Robertson and Rolling Stone magazine boss and Hall chairman Jann Wenner.

Event executive producer Wenner said in a statement, "Twenty-five years ago ... Ahmet Ertegun created this foundation to recognize and celebrate the music and careers of artists whose music helped shape and define our generation. These once-in-a-lifetime concerts are designed to celebrate the artists and their music."

There's quite an epic battle brewing for Best Song From a Movie at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. There's not a genre left unturned, and every type of movie is represented by the nominated songs.

The category is split between Oscar-nominated songs like A.R. Rahman's "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire" and Bruce Springsteen's title track for "The Wrestler." But don't count out the teen-girl power: Paramore's "Twilight" theme "Decode" is competing against Miley Cyrus' empowerment ballad "The Climb" from "Hannah Montana."

The clear front-runners seem to be Paramore and Cyrus, since they each hail from tween-favorite soundtracks. Paramore also gets a push from the Twilighter community, which is very, very loyal to all things "Twilight."

No disrespect to Springsteen and Rahman, but when two older dudes are trying to compete with the forces of Cyrus and Paramore, well, let's just say the Academy isn't voting for this one.

Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams is a Twilighter herself, so when she was asked to do a song for the movie, she jumped at the chance. "I chose the title 'Decode,' because the song is about the building tension, awkwardness, anger and confusion between Bella and Edward," she said. "Bella is the only mind Edward can't read, and I feel like that's a big part of the first book and one of the obstacles for them to overcome. It's one added tension that makes the story even better."

Will the vampires grab more trophies than the slumdog? What was the year's ultimate onscreen WTF moment? It's up to you to decide the winners of the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Vote now, and tune in on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, when the big show airs live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Jay Weinberg Feels 'Super Fortunate' To Play On Bruce Springsteen Tour

Drummer Jay Weinberg might be 18 years old, but he has earned a regular spot performing with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their Working on a Dream Tour.

As the son of longtime E Street drummer Max Weinberg — who first joined the Boss onstage in 1974 and is the bandleader of the Max Weinberg 7 on the upcoming "Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" — Jay has joined the ranks of a few other rock-star kids who have inherited their father's knack for drumming, such as Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey (the Who, Oasis) and Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son, Jason.

Weinberg told MTV News that his drumming career began when he was just 13, when he discovered one of his father's old drum sets in his basement — but not just any drum set.

"I remember he had these classic cymbals, like the ones he used on Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. I took them, set them up and just mashed them, and now they have all these chunks taken out of them. I used all of his old gear, but it was for a good cause: for me to learn the drums," Weinberg said.

According to Weinberg, who noted he has had a "deep connection to the music world his whole life," his interest in music developed as early as his toddler years, when his mother played classical music and his dad performed regularly in massive arenas around the world. Weinberg's passion progressed further, thanks to his father, who brought him to concerts and helped hone his musical tastes.

"When I was 9 or 10, my dad brought me to Ozzfest to see Slipknot," Jay recalled. "They had been on 'Conan,' and my dad was like, 'You have to see these guys. They're really crazy, they wear masks, are really intense, and they're super scary — you'll love them!' I was immediately sold, and I've been a fan of really heavy and intense music ever since."

After playing in several bands in high school, Weinberg's drumming reached a level that Springsteen himself took an interest in, leading to his first show onstage with the E Street Band last summer at Giants Stadium, when he performed "Born to Run." It was such a success that the Boss looked no further when he needed to choose a drummer to fill in for Max during the European dates of the Working on a Dream Tour in June while the star drummer stays for his spot on "Conan."

"I got a phone call from Bruce, who said to me, 'Jay, as you know, I have this band, and in this band, we have the greatest drummer of all time, who has a scheduling conflict. And when I asked him how we could resolve this conflict, he gave me your name and number.' "

As a college freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, and the drummer of New York punk band the Reveling, Weinberg has a busier schedule than most teens, beginning rehearsals for the E Street tour back in February. Weinberg has been performing a number of songs most nights on the current U.S. dates, playing as many as 11, like at Wednesday's show in Philadelphia.

Now under Springsteen's wing, Weinberg said that it has been "mind-blowing" to play beside one of the most prominent figures in rock-and-roll history.

"Bruce lays it out pretty simple the way he wants it. He's a great teacher, coach and motivator. When I'm doing something right, I can see it in his eyes, he's smiling," Weinberg said. "He's a guy I've respected since I've been around this band, and to have this connection is pretty untouchable."

As far as stepping into his dad's shoes, Weinberg noted that he could never take his father's place and sees it more as an honor to have the opportunity to share the stage with the man who influenced his passion for music in the first place.

"[My dad] is one-of-a-kind with his style, sound and way of playing. I've been trying to channel my four to five years of experience and grasping that sort of old-school drumming feel to make the transition. I'm jumping into 40 years of experience, but I think being my age has a lot of cool aspects to it," he said. "It adds a different dynamic to it. It's youthful, it isn't better or worse. It's just different."

Although Weinberg is unsure of whether he will have a future with the E Street Band beyond this tour, he said he is just enjoying the surreal experience of it right now.

"Doing this at 18, I could imagine it's a summer job that anybody would want, and I'm super fortunate to be able to be doing it at my age," he said. "It's really crazy to wrap my head around fully. I'm signing autographs and taking pictures and doing all this stuff I never thought I'd be doing at my age. It's getting more comfortable, and I'm loving it."

For the second time in the past three years, Bruce Springsteen has been forced to deny that he has allegedly stepped out on his wife/bandmate, Patti Scialfa.

This time, fellow New Jerseyite Arthur J. Kelly has alleged that his wife of 17 years, Ann Kelly, has "committed adultery with one Bruce Springsteen ... at various times and places too numerous to mention," according to People magazine.

The divorce papers were filed last month, and a rep for the 59-year-old rock icon reiterated what the Boss said in 2006 when similar allegations surfaced: that Springsteen's commitment to wife Scialfa "remains as strong as the day we were married."

Springsteen and Scialfa were married in 1991 and have three children together. At the time of the first allegation — which involved an alleged liaison with a September 11 widow the Boss met in 2001 — Springsteen wrote on his official site, "I hesitate to use this Web site for anything personal, believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job. However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn't pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years — the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect, and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married." A spokesperson said he stands by that statement again.

The New York Daily News quoted Ann Kelly's father as saying that the allegations against his daughter are untrue and that the only thing she's guilty of is "working out at in the same gym as Bruce Springsteen and of talking to him."

Imagine going from playing shows in dingy New Jersey basements to opening for Bruce Springsteen in London's massive Hyde Park. Then imagine it all happening in less than two years.

That's the case for the Gaslight Anthem, the Garden State's latest progenitors of blue-collar, heart-on-your-sleeve punk. The secret to their success? It's as simple as timing, according to lead singer Brian Fallon.

"I think it was just that the right record struck a right chord with people. I really don't know — you can't plan for that sort of thing," Fallon told MTV News last week from a tour stop in Germany. "That's what people were looking for and we just happened to be the ones there to do it. I'd say we're pretty fortunate to be here."

Formed in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 2005, Fallon and the Anthem — guitarist Alex Rosamilia, bassist Alex Levine and drummer Benny Horowitz — earned a dedicated following based on the strength of their debut, 2007's Sink or Swim, but surged into the spotlight with last year's The '59 Sound, a sandpaper-rough yet strangely saccharine blast of retro punk that owed as much to Springsteen's sweaty live sets as it did to the buttoned-down, dreamy pop of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

The album gained international acclaim (it even placed at #3 on MTV's "Best Albums of 2008" list) and an exponentially growing fan base ... one that includes everything from teen punks to middle-aged parents who welcome the Boss-like tradition the band embraces.

"It's totally weird because you don't expect people to be singing your songs when you're touring all over the world, and for people to know your songs just like they do at home," Fallon said. "It's exciting, but you get the whole mixture — you're partly unsure about it, and you're partly happy about it. You're not sure where it's all coming from or if it's going too fast."

And to that point, though they were tapped by the Boss himself to serve as the opening act at June's Hard Rock Calling Festival in London, Fallon still doesn't consider the Gaslight Anthem to be anything more than proud carriers of the New Brunswick banner. Emerging from a decades-old scene that has given rise to bands like Thursday, the Bouncing Souls and Lifetime, the band still hold their Jersey ties close.

"Geoff [Rickly] and the guys from Thursday have always rooted for us. They always helped us out, even from the beginning. Frankie [Iero] from My Chemical Romance always comes to our shows, and the Bouncing Souls have helped us out a ton, along with a bunch of other dudes," Fallon said. "They're our peers, our friends and the people who we've come from the same scene as, and they've embraced us. It's weird because they're these big bands, but they treat us like we're the kid down the block."

But for these new kids on the Jersey block, the whole ride has been a quick one to the top. Currently on tour in Europe and slated to kick off their first U.S. headlining jaunt in a few weeks, they'll spend the summer doing the rounds on the festival circuit. Still, despite the critical praise and the full touring schedule, Fallon isn't buying the hype. To him, music is his job ... and things have been pretty busy at the office of late.

"Especially lately, people are always like, 'How do you deal with fame?' And I'm like, 'Listen man, we're not famous. It's not like it's different from anything else. This is my job and I'm just trying to do the best I can,'" he sighed. "I just want to put on a good show and make good records that honestly deserve the $15.99 or whatever it is to buy them. I'm more worried about that than whether we're the biggest band or how fast we got anywhere. To me, it's still the same as it was back then."

It's been four years since Denver rockers the Fray released their debut album, but clearly their fans have not forgotten the "How to Save a Life" group. The band's self-titled second album will debut at the top of the Billboard albums chart next week with sales of 179,300, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

That top debut will push Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Working on a Dream — which held the spot for just one week — down to #2 with sales of 101,600, a 55 percent slide. Country singer Dierks Bentley will debut at #3 with Feel That Fire, which sold 71,200 copies.

The rest of the top 10 is mostly full of the usual suspects, once again. Taylor Swift will continue her strong chart run with Fearless, sliding down to #4 with another 63,900 moved, enough to push her over the 2.5 million mark. She's followed by Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce (#5, 51,400), Nickelback's Dark Horse (#6, 47,300), new entry Kidz Bop 15 (#7, 38,400), Jamie Foxx's Intuition (#8, 36,600), Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak (#9, 33,900) and Keyshia Cole's Different Me (#10, 33,600).

Further down the chart, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus debut at #14 with 26,000 copies sold of Lonely Road. Florida melodic metalcore rockers A Day to Remember pop in at #21 with sales of 21,700 of their third studio album, Homesick. Best New Artist Grammy winner Adele's debut, 19, jumps 29 spots to #27 on sales of nearly 17,900, and she'll likely see an even bigger jump next week. Adele's iTunes live EP, iTunes Live From Soho, will debut at #105 with sales of 6,300.

Another Best New Artist nominee, fellow British crooner Duffy, saw a double-digit percentage leap for Rockferry, which was boosted to #53 with sales of 11,500. A number of other Grammy-winnings artists were helped by the awards show, including Coldplay (#31, 16,700), Leona Lewis (#42, 12,700) and Jennifer Hudson (#47, 12,100). Expect Album of the Year winner Raising Sand from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss to have another huge bump next week. Sand flies back onto the charts at #68 thanks to about 9,400 new converts, a 286 percent increase from the previous week.

Elsewhere on the chart, "American Idol" season-six third-place finalist Melinda Doolittle's full length debut, It's Your Love, will land at #58 in its first week with close to 10,900 units moved. Franz Ferdinand's Tonight: Franz Ferdinand nose-dives 50 spots after last week's top 10 debut, down to #59 with 10,700 in sales. Cannibal Corpse bring their Evisceration Plague in at #91 with 7,500, and just a few customers behind is the latest from Ben Kweller, the country-tinged Changing Horses at #92. Indie darlings Heartless Bastards debut at #150 with sales of 4,200 for Mountains.

The top 10 might get shaken up a bit next week by new albums from Lily Allen, "Saturday Night Live" viral faves Lonely Island and the latest from Bobby Valentino.

Bruce Springsteen did a remarkable job of condensing the energy of his three-hour-plus-long concerts into 12 minutes with his rousing halftime performance at the Super Bowl. But it sounds like the effort took a toll on the Boss.

"It was like being shot out of a cannon," a tired but happy Springsteen told MTV News recently near his home in New Jersey. "I didn't know 12 minutes could take that much out of you! I'm still recovering from the intensity."

Springsteen, still tan from his time in Florida, made this comment just moments after stepping out of his parked car, where he'd just spent the previous 30 minutes spontaneously napping. "This has probably been the busiest month of my life," he said.

Of course, that month has also included his performance at President Obama's "We Are One" concert, winning a Golden Globe Award for his title track to "The Wrestler," releasing his new LP, Working on a Dream, announcing his forthcoming world tour (including an appearance at the Bonnaroo festival), and winning yet another Grammy Award — one he actually said he wasn't aware he was in the running for.

"I didn't even know I was up for a Grammy!" he laughed. (His "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," from last year's Magic LP, took the Best Rock Song trophy.) "I opened the newspaper on Monday and saw that I had won, and thought, 'Well, that's great!' "

And with that, it was back to his car, to rest up for his world tour, which begins April 1 in San Jose, California, and is scheduled to run into August.

Will Lil Wayne grab all the gramophones? Is Katy Perry going to tell her girl rivals to kiss off? Can Coldplay march off with a win? MTV News is all over the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, so stay tuned for interviews, analysis and more before, during and after the big night, Sunday, February 8.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are one of the most notoriously ripping live rock bands on the planet, legendary for their marathon performances, mind-meld timing and brotherly vibe. But, apparently, even a band with a telepathic musical bond plays to tape when they take the stage at the Super Bowl for the halftime show.

Just days after word emerged that Jennifer Hudson lip-synched her performance of the national anthem before Super Bowl XLIII, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band also played to a pre-recorded tape.

While the paper said that Springsteen's vocals were live, it revealed that the E Street Band was playing along to a recording during the group's rousing four-song mid-game set.

"The Super Bowl performances are all on tape," Hank Neuberger, a Grammy-winning producer who is supervisor of the broadcast audio for the Grammy Awards telecast, told the paper. Neuberger explained that no matter how good a singer is, backing tapes are a necessary evil of most live, nationally televised musical performances.

"There is no way you can set up a full band in five minutes with microphones, get all the settings right, and expect to get quality sound," Neuberger said. "The Super Bowl has been doing that for years with virtually all the bands."

After the Super Bowl, the pregame show's producer, Rickey Minor, confirmed that both Hudson and singer Faith Hill, who performed "America the Beautiful," used backing tracks. Hudson's publicist explained on Tuesday that the singer's microphone was on, but that she was singing "live to a backing track" at the request of the producers.

According to the Tribune, the Super Bowl has routinely required singers to pre-tape their performances before the broadcast, giving them the option of singing live but encouraging them to use a backing track in case of technical issues. The drama of Hudson's soaring performance of the anthem was heightened by the fact that it was her first live singing engagement since the tragic murders of her mother, brother and nephew in October. And even though message boards and Web sites blew up with shocked comments when it was revealed that the accomplished, Oscar-winning singer had sung to a track, Neuberger said it is no judgment on Hudson's or the E Street Band's skills.

"It's not fraudulent; it's the opposite of fraud," Neuberger said. "It's not like Milli Vanilli. ... This was a case where Jennifer Hudson is the singer, and it was a case of the artist giving the audience her best under adverse conditions." Neuberger compared the arrangement to a similar one employed at the presidential inauguration last month, when the accomplished classical quartet that included violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma played to a recorded track because of the inability to properly keep their instruments in tune in the cold weather.

"There were too many variables keeping the instruments in tune while playing outside in cold weather," he said. "You can't control the environment, so the smart decision is to record the performance and play along with it. With Jennifer Hudson, if she goes out there, they set up the microphones, the music starts and something goes wrong — she can't hear herself, the microphone doesn't work — she's in trouble. The performance is going to suffer. You only have a certain amount of time. It's too big of an event to risk something going wrong."
