Ladies and gentlemen, Sponge has left the building.
Sponge singer Vinnie Dombroski and guitarist Joey Mazzola have announced that they have formed a new band, Crud, which is set to make its debut February 11 at Lili's 21 in its hometown of Detroit.
Crud consists of Dombroski, Mazzola, original Sponge drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, and bassist Robbie Graham from Hoarse, the group that also housed Paluzzi after his early departure from Sponge. (Hoarse released an album through RCA in the summer of 1997 and broke up this past winter.)
The band's former management and its label, Beyond Records, insist that Sponge (which scored alterna-hits with "Plowed" and "Molly" off of 1994's "Rotting Piñata") is only on hiatus, but Crud manager John Matheson told MTV News that for all intents and purposes, Sponge is no more. His clients own the Sponge name and can resurrect the group, but Matheson says that their efforts will now be directed at developing Crud, a band he describes as much
harder than its predecessor.
Sponge released two albums on Columbia, the near million-seller "Rotting Piñata" and 1996's less successful "Wax Ecstatic" before quietly releasing "New Pop Sunday" on the small Beyond label (home to Yes, Blondie, and Mötley Crüe) last April. The band also lost its management at the start of 1998 when Susan Silver (Soundgarden, Alice In Chains) retired.
Crud is currently shopping for a label deal and expects the Lili's 21 performance to serve as an industry showcase.

It's been over four years since Sponge's debut album, "Rotting Pinata," spawned the alt-rock hits "Plowed" and "Molly." The band's sophomore effort, 1996's "Wax Ecstatic," didn't take off.
Now the boys are back with their third record, "New Pop Sunday," a raucous rocker with psychedelic-pop overtones (see "Sponge Has A Date For 'New Pop Sunday'"). The first single is the twangy "Live Here Without You."
As frontman Vinnie Dombroski told the MTV Radio Network, the road back was a tough one for the band, which found itself in an artistic skirmish with its former label.
"We were in New York a year ago, you know, just kind of putting the finishing touches on the record when we were on Columbia," said Dombroski.
"New Pop Sunday" found a home with the BMG-distributed Beyond label, and it's in stores now.
You can catch Sponge supporting both the Cranberries and Blondie on tour this spring. If you're not willing to wait, the band will be appearing in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Thursday and Toledo, Ohio on Friday.

Sponge has a new album slated to drop April 13 named "New Pop Sunday." The album will be the Detroit-based band's first record since 1996's "Wax Ecstatic." The group, which includes singer Vinnie Dombroski, guitarists Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola, bassist Tim Cross and drummer Charlie Grover, made its debut in 1994 with "Rotting Pinata" on Columbia, but are now signed to the BMG-distributed Beyond label (see "Sponge Returning To Form").
Beyond reports that song titles for the new record include "My Lackluster Love," "Polyanna," "Live Here Without You," "1000 Times," "All American World," "Radio Prayer Line," "New Pop Sunday," "Planet Girls," "When You're on Fire Baby, Roll," "Disconnected" and "Lucky."
The record was produced by various configurations of Tim Patalan, Kevin Shirley and the band themselves. Palatan produced their two previous efforts while Shirley is best known for current albums by Silverchair and Aerosmith.

Sponge is booked to tour the States during April and May. A label spokesperson says to expect an official announcement shortly.
Meanwhile the band will be joining label mates Blondie at the House of Blues in Las Vegas March 10, and the show will also be available as a webcast on the House of Blues website. Cyber savvy fans can watch the performance live on video with either the RealPlayer or the Windows Media Player at 9 PM Pacific time at www.hob.com.

Sponge is bouncing back. The Detroit-based alternative hard rock band was dropped by their previous record company, Columbia, and they lost their manager when Seattle music maven Susan Silver retired early last year. But Sponge is now set to return with a new album next year on the new BMG-distributed Beyond label. Their management is being provided courtesy of the Beyond-affiliated Left Bank group. The move makes them roster and label mates to Blondie, Motley Crue and Yes.

Sponge had been in the process of recording a third album, this time with help from hotshot producer Kevin Shirley, when Columbia pulled the plug, and the majority of that material is expected to be included on the pending CD, although the band apparently later recorded additional tracks. Shirley is best known as the producer of the latest albums by Aerosmith and Silverchair.

A Beyond spokesperson confirmed that the company had signed the band and that a new CD was recorded and due out in March,
but declined to release any details.

Sponge debuted in 1994 with "Rotting Pinata," a near million seller. They followed it up with "Wax Ecstatic" in the summer of 1996 which sold a respectable but comparatively disappointing quarter million.

The band last made news when they headlined last year's R.O.A.R. tour by default after Iggy Pop was forced to pull out with a shoulder injury. At that time singer Vinnie Dombroski was arrested and fined for repeatedly using obscenities onstage (see "Sponge Singer Soaked For Dirty Language").
