Rock quartet Splender may be second-guessing the title of its new single, "I Think God Can Explain."
Earlier this week, the group flew from New York to Los Angeles to shoot the video for the aforementioned song, and somewhere along the way had two guitars stolen; a Fender Telecaster 1952 re-issue model and a one-of-a-kind bass guitar that was custom-built for the band’s bassist James Cruz. The band is offering a reward for the return of the treasured instruments with no questions asked.
The shoot for "I Think God Can Explain," the latest single from the group's 1999 album "Halfway Down The Sky," went on ahead, with director Chris Applebaum, whose previous clients include Lit, Semisonic, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, at the helm. No word yet on when the clip will surface. As for touring plans, Splender has a string of East Coast dates with Vertical Horizon during April and May (see ). The group will also share a stage with Oasis, Our Lady Peace, and many others for Atlanta’s massive Music Midtown Festival on May 6 (see "Creed, Nas, Oasis To Play Music Midtown").

Call it Pantsapalooza.
Hoping that the special triple bill will draw fans to shows (as well as, perhaps, to augment their wardrobe), Train, Splender, and Shooter have all signed on for a promotional outing sponsored by fashion label DKNY as part of its 1999 Jeans Tour.
Kicking off on September 15 in New York City, each date of the tour will involve both an evening concert featuring all three bands (with Train headlining) plus an acoustic in-store gig at a local DKNY shop by one of the featured acts.
Each of the groups involved in the outing will be looking to build upon minor alt-radio hits they've recently enjoyed. Train has savored the biggest success with its track, "Meet Virginia," the second single from its self-titled debut album.
Splender notched a hit with "Yeah, Whatever" from its 1999 debut, "Halfway Down the Sky," while Shooter has drawn attention for it's "Life's a Bitch" single, which first appeared on the "Dawson's Creek" soundtrack.
Dates
for the DKNY Jeans Tour:

9/15 - New York, NY @ Irving Plaza (4 p.m. in-store performance by Train at Macy's Herald Square)
9/16 - Miami Beach, FL @ Warsaw Ballroom (6 p.m. in-store performance by Splender at Burdine's Adventura)
9/19 - Phoenix, AZ @ Alice Cooper's Town (4 p.m. in-store performance by Splender at Dillard's Scottsdale)
9/21 - Los Angeles, CA @ Mayan Theater (4 p.m. in-store performance by Splender at Bloomingdale's Century City)
9/22 - Chicago, IL @ Club Metro (5:30 p.m. in-store performance by Train at Marshall Field's State Street)
9/23 - Minneapolis, MN @ Quest Club (4 p.m. in-store performance by Splender at Bloomingdale's Mall of America)

Splender, Todd Rundgren Rediscover Utopia For New LP

Hailing from New York City, the rock quartet known as Splender is looking to emerge as one of the premiere new acts of the year, thanks to a fiery single, "Yeah, Whatever," and a debut album, "Halfway Down the Sky," produced by rock iconoclast Todd Rundgren.
When it came time to head into a studio to cut its first album, Splender didn't really expect to land Rundgren, who is perhaps best known for his "Bang on the Drum All Day" single and his production work on Meat Loaf's classic "Bat Out of Hell" LP.
But as the band recently told the MTV Radio Network, a strange twist of events led Splender to record "Halfway Down the Sky" in a space that Rundgren knew rather well.
"Our producer, Todd Rundgren, wanted us to do it [at Bearsville Studios]," explained Splender frontman Waymon Boone.
"Bearsville was actually where Todd used to have his studio," added bassist James Cruz, "and we wound up recording in his original sound and video studio."
"Which is actually called Utopia," Boone explained, "which is one of his bands... so he named it after what people know him for."
Rundgren worked on many of his '70s projects at Bearsville Studios, founded by the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan's former manager, Albert Grossman. Rundgren also issued several albums during that era via the Bearsville Records label.
Splender will play at the City Stages Fest in Birmingham tomorrow, and then travel to Columbia, South Carolina for a gig at the Elbow Room on June 21.
