Soulja Boy On Gun And Drug Charges: 'I'm Innocent'

Despite facing some very serious criminal charges, Soulja Boy Tell'em maintains his innocence.

After the rapper was released from police custody Tuesday, SB made a quick statement to his fans and the press waiting outside. "I'm innocent, man. I love you all. I just want y'all to know I'm innocent," he said as he was rushed to his car, according to CBS Atlanta.

The 21-year-old hitmaker was arrested Tuesday after police pulled over the black Cadillac Escalade Soulja was riding in. After what police are calling a routine traffic stop, they detected a strong marijuana odor and searched the vehicle. Officers found marijuana, guns and cash in the SUV. Sources told CBS Atlanta that police found more than 5 ounces of pot and $46,000 in cash in the rented vehicle. Soulja and the four men who were riding with him were all booked and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The men were being held in Carroll County Jail in Carrollton, Georgia, but were all released after posting bond. As expected, the digital whiz took to Twitter to address his concerned fans. "Aye can I have a real n---a moment? My fans was DEEP AS F--- OUTSIDE THAT JAIL MAN IM SORRY!!! That's love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!," he wrote.

The "Turn My Swag On" rapper also took time out to promote his new documentary DVD, which hit stores Tuesday: "Goodnight. Much love go cop soulja boy the movie everywhere now thanks for your prayers."

Soulja Boy Arrested On Drug, Gun Charges

The 21-year-old rapper was charged with marijuana and gun possession in Georgia on Tuesday, MTV News confirms.

It was supposed to be a day of celebration for Soulja Boy, but whatever plans he had have been curtailed. On Tuesday morning (October 18), the same day the rapper's "Soulja Boy: The Movie" DVD documentary hit stores, the 21-year-old was arrested in Georgia after a routine traffic stop and hit with multiple drug charges.

MTV News has learned that the Atlanta MC has been charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Temple Police Department's public information officer, Dana Rampy, confirmed to MTV News that Soulja Boy (born De'Andre Cortez Way) and four other individuals were arrested early Tuesday around 2:30 a.m. ET while driving west on I-20 in a black Cadillac Escalade. The arresting officer found marijuana, guns and cash in the car. It has been reported by other outlets that roughly $70,000 in cash was found in the vehicle, but Temple Police told us that they did not find that much cash, though they declined to disclose the exact amount.

All five men were charged and are currently being held in Carroll County Jail in Carrollton, Georgia; they are set to go before a judge sometime today. The Temple Police Department expects the men to be released after bond is set and posted.

Reps for Soulja Boy had no comment when MTV News reached out for a statement.

Soulja Boy Tell'em got the juice now. After the "Crank That" rapper announced that he would be remaking the 1992 film "Juice" and playing Bishop — the role that turned rapper Tupac Shakur into a movie star — some fans were up in arms.

Well, on Wednesday (May 11), Soulja Boy appeared on MTV's "RapFix Live" and told Sway that he was also asked to audition for the role of Shakur in the upcoming Antoine Fuqua-directed Tupac biopic.+

"I got an email from William Morris Agency — that's my agency that I'm with — they reached out to me to play the part. I'm just still thinking about it right now," Soulja told Sway. "Even with the whole 'Juice' movie, I'm playing a part that Tupac played, but I'm not actually playin' 'Pac. When it comes to this, I'm actually gonna be playin' 'Pac, so I'm really still just thinkin' about it. But I'm just honored that they would reach out to me and ask me anyway."

While he is still mulling over the audition invite, Soulja is excited about his remake of "Juice." The film is an accompaniment to his Juice mixtape, which dropped April 20. Soulja said he has already wrapped shooting, and fans will be able to see the film later this year.

"I shot the movie. It's done. We did a good job. It's gonna be crazy," SB said. "I'm ready for the masses to see it. I got the 'Juice' music video coming out for the official soundtrack for all the people to hype 'em up, to get everybody crunk."

Real Spit: Soulja Boy's got the juice now. At least, according to his latest mixtape, he does. SB channeled the energy of Tupac and used it to fuel Juice, his DJ Scream and DJ Swamp Izzo-helmed project. Inspired by Shakur's 1992 film of the same name, Soulja says he's simply feeding the people.

"This mixtape is called Juice. I'm giving the people what they want, giving the people what they need," he told Mixtape Daily.

While the tape's cover is a recreation of the original "Juice" movie poster — with SB posing as 'Pac — the tape's first single and title track, is no throwback. Kinetic synths, buoyant 808s and slow-prodding drums drive "Juice," as Soulja delivers a repetitive hook that screams 2011.

Following suit is the bright and airy "That Right," featuring Diamond. On the track, SB and his new love interest both rap Auto-Tuned bars, bragging about their cash and all of the trappings that the rap game brings. In fact, SB's bank account comes up quite often on the tape. "Shawty Got Racks" is another ode to cash, while "Money Gang Anthem" borrows Wiz Khalifa and Lex Luger's "Taylor Gang" instrumental. "Racks" is an SB take on YC's latest single, and "Rich Hoe," featuring Lil B, continues the trend.

With an accompanying "Juice" film on the way from Soulja's camp, the rapper aims to take the entire theme and brand it just as he did with his Crank That dance and swag trend. "I already killed the people with the Swag movement," he said. "We finna turn it into the Juice movement."

Soulja Boy Mourns Death Of 14-Year-Old Brother

Soulja Boy took to Twitter on Monday (March 21) to express grief over the death of his half-brother Deion Jenkins. The 14-year-old died on Sunday in a car accident in Charleston, Mississippi, according to XXLmag.com.

The "Pretty Boy Swag" MC remembered his sibling online, tweeting, "at home crying my eyes out I can't believe my Lil bro is gone... today is so not my day.. RIP lil brother love you always :("

In addition to Soulja Boy, an associate of the rapper, Michael "Miami Mike" Sykes, also sent his condolences. "The Flags are @ Half Staff @ the Offices of SODMG & PTE, R.I.P. to @Souljaboy little brother who passed-way in a auto crash last nite :-(," he tweeted.

Sean Kingston, who has worked with the MC, was saddened by the news, writing, "Smh life is really short man.. Why do the good die young smh @SouljaBoy keep your head up stay strong..Ima keep u in my prayers bro realtalk."

While further details regarding Jenkins' accident are still unknown, a rep for Soulja Boy told XXLmag.com funeral proceedings for the 14-year-old will be held on Saturday.

Soulja Boy Tell'em has gone on record with his goal to be taken more seriously as a lyricist.

Kanye West and 50 Cent are two peers of the young rapper who have co-signed his talent, which he first showed off in 2007 with the playful "Crank That (Soulja Boy)."

On his new album, The DeAndre Way, however, SB is yearning to be seen as more than just an artist who has an affinity for making the teen set dance.

"Grammy," featuring Ester Dean, is a slow-turning contemplation of his career and his desire to win one of the music industry's most-coveted awards.

"That was really to strike that emotion, to tell that story," Soulja Boy told MTV News during an appearance on "RapFix Live" on Thursday. "This album, I want people to take from it that Soulja Boy has grown, he's developed, he's matured, and he's going places."

In the past year, SB has stepped up to the plate to rhyme alongside a higher caliber of rapper than ever before, from Drake to 50 Cent.

The G-Unit superstar has long been an admirer of his labelmate, which SB talked about with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway.

"To have 50 have my back, that's definitely exciting; it's an achievement. 50 don't mess with no rappers," Soulja explained. "When I came out, there [was] a lot of people that was hating on me [and] felt like I wasn't real to the game — don't hate the player, hate the game. 50 shed light on me, and he came to my defense."

Fif has defended the young MC, and '50 don't mess with no rappers,' Soulja says on 'RapFix Live.'

Hip-pop hitmaker Soulja Boy and gritty G-Unit boss 50 Cent may be hip-hop's newest odd couple, but the 20-year-old rapper is glad the Queens MC is in his corner — regardless of what critics may say.

During a return appearance on MTV News' "RapFix Live" on Thursday (December 2), the "Speakers Going Hammer" star talked about his relationship with Fif, saying he's amped the Before I Self Destruct lyricist has stuck up for him when his hip-hop cred was questioned.

"To have 50 have my back, that's definitely exciting, it's an achievement. 50 don't mess with no rappers," Soulja said. "When I came out, there [was] a lot of people that was hating on me [and] felt like I wasn't real to the game — don't hate the player, hate the game — 50 shed light on me and he came to my defense."

Soulja talked about taking the brunt of much hip-hop hate for churning out infectious, dance floor-friendly hits that became popular with everyone from all-American teens to Hollywood heavyweights.

"Eminem's daughter doing my ['Crank That'] dance, that's just amazing. Just like when I seen Beyoncé doing it, just like when I seen Samuel L Jackson doing it," he recalled. "I was just like, 'Wow, all these people liking what I'm doing, so why hate on me?' That's all I felt." Soulja also revealed the advice Fif hooked him up with for both dealing with hate and side-stepping any wrong turns on the road to superstardom. "He just wants me to do my thang," SB said. "Me being 20 years old, he just always gives me advice and tips so I won't make the same mistakes he made when he was young. Ain't really no other older rapper did that, except for my homie Gucci [Mane]. But me and him being from Atlanta, being from the South, we got more in common than me and 50, so for 50 to come out and do that ... that's real big." Soulja Boy Recalls Meeting Dr. Dre, Dubs Himself 'Lil' Dre'

Along with 50 Cent, another hip-hop heavyweight may be taking Soulja Boy Tell'em under his wing. During his interview on "RapFix Live" on Thursday (December 2), the 20-year-old rapper talked about meeting Dr. Dre for the first time briefly before one of his concerts.

"Everybody knows Dre," Soulja Boy said of meeting the West Coast icon. "I was in shock at what he was saying. It was just like, I couldn't believe that he was there."

Apparently, Dre was so unassuming that he caught the young MC off-guard.

"My CEO, Jimmy Iovine, had came in the room before he did, and he was like, 'What's up, Soulja Boy?' and we was talking," Soulja recalled. "And Dre just walked in, like, 'Soulja!' And I was like, 'Oh, is that Dr. Dre?' And [my boys] were like, 'Why you ain't take your shades off?' I was caught up in the moment, what he was saying, how he appreciate what I do and I'm doing my thang.

"Just him telling me that, just meant so much," Soulja continued. "I was in a point of shock, you feel me?"

And like for many other rappers, Dre has been a point of inspiration, but leave it to SB to take the superproducer's legacy one step further.

"Dr. Dre is a legend. I've been listening to him since I was in diapers," Soulja said. "I know my mama been listening to him. Everybody knows that he did so much for hip-hop and ... you know, I'm lil' Dre!"

While that title is debatable, the two may work together on Dre's premium line of headphones, Beats by Dre.

"During the 'Speakers Going Hammer' [video], the beats are all through that video and the 'Speakers Going Hammer' song is gon' be in his next commercial," Soulja said. "That was love. He was like, 'I like that song. Put that in the commercial.' Soon, maybe you'll see some Soulja Boy/ Dr. Dre headphones or something like that."

Until then, the rapper's been busy dreaming up fresh ideas.

"I've been thinking about what I could bring. Like, I ain't want to do just like the headphones," Soulja shared. "I wanted to do something new to it."

'Pretty Boy Swag' MC returns to 'Rapfix Live' this Thursday.

Arguably one of the most-polarizing figures in current hip-hop, Soulja Boy Tell'em has both die-hard fans and his share of critics who like to point out his preference for party over substance in his music. But the "Pretty Boy Swag" MC promises that his third studio album, The DeAndre Way, due out Tuesday, will show how much he has learned over the years, possibly pleasing fans and haters alike.

"I've just been watching a lot of rappers, learning, taking notes," Soulja told MTV News on the video set for the album's third single, "Speakers Going Hammer." "I've really been in the studio working on my production as producer, because I was rapping and jumping on so many different songs that I forgot that I produced the #1 song in the world. I really just sat and got back on my production. I worked on my lyrics and really I just made a good album, and I'm ready for my fans to hear it."

And if you want him to explain more about how his music has matured, you can ask him yourself this Thursday, when he makes his second appearance on MTV News' "RapFix Live."

One artist who has helped Soulja evolve was his "Mean Mug" collaborator 50 Cent. Both were featured on the November cover of XXL, where they expressed their mutual admiration for each other. Soulja Boy said they faced common adversities, and 50 said if he could be any other artist it would be Soulja.

On his video set, Soulja also talked about why he loves the opportunity to sit back, listen and learn from Fif.

"When I talk to dudes like 50 Cent, when we working on songs or other business outside of the music industry, there's always things that you can learn," he told MTV News. "You always think that you know it all, but you don't. When I'm around 50, he just likes to ramble. He can go on and talk. He can talk and talk and talk. And it's so good for me, because I just listen and I soak it all up. And I take it and I put my own twist on it."
