IRVINE, California — For people itching to hear some of this summer's most anticipated new music, the place to be this weekend was Saturday's KROQ-FM Weenie Roast y Fiesta, where the lineup was stacked with bands on the verge of releasing long-awaited new material.

The day kicked off with the Plain White T's over on the second stage, a.k.a. "stage dos" in keeping with the day's Latin theme. The former You Hear It First pick was followed by fellow YHIF alums Silversun Pickups as well as Swedish whistlers Peter, Bjorn and John and Rancid's Tim Armstrong playing solo and delivering scorching riffs under an equally scorching sun. Not to worry, though — there were free sombreros in the Fiesta Village, a place for concertgoers could snack, buy merch and cool off.

As things wound down on stage dos, KROQ darlings Tiger Army took the main stage (no witty Spanish title here). The psychobilly band's "Forever Fades Away" is the current most-requested and most-played song on the L.A. rock station, and the Bay Area trio powered through that and other tracks off their upcoming Music From Regions Beyond, due June 5.

(Check out photos of Tiger Army, Linkin Park, Korn and more from Saturday's show.)

Once their set ended, the revolving stage made the first of many 180 degree turns, revealing a plugged-in and ready to go Bravery, who also had new music to share. Although the crowd was still filing into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, the very danceable "Public Service Announcement" inspired a fiesta mood. The band followed with the new single "Time Won't Let Me Go," which hits stores Tuesday on the Bravery's new album, The Sun and the Moon.

Next up were 30 Seconds to Mars, who are no strangers to KROQ's music fests, having played KROQ's Inland Invasion show just last year. "It's weird to think that we are veterans of the KROQ shows now, because I was remembering actually sneaking backstage [at a Weenie Roast] to try and watch a band from the side of the stage a number of years ago," frontman Jared Leto recalled.

When the stage spun around for 30 Seconds to Mars' set, the audience instead found a group of folk dancers showing off traditional Latin American moves and fashions. Soon, however, Leto hit the stage ... wearing a sombrero. Always one to put on a spectacle, he also made his way deep into the crowd — twice — even singing closing number "The Kill" as he made his way up to the cheap seats.

(See Jared Leto talk about 30 Seconds to Mars being Weenie Roast "veterans.")

With the crowd now suitably amped, one of the most anticipated bands of the day, Bad Religion, made its way onstage as Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and other artists took a side-stage vantage point to watch. Among their catalog of hits, the Bad boys treated the fiesta-goers to the new single "Honest Goodbye," off July 10's New Maps of Hell. Scoring points for timeliness, the band also cranked out "Los Angeles Is Burning," calling to mind the actual L.A. wildfires from earlier this month.

While Queens of the Stone Age kept Bad Religion's energy going onstage — with new material as well, including the fresh single "Sick, Sick, Sick" — the party was really starting backstage. Those lucky enough to score backstage passes enjoyed a bar, "Guitar Hero" (appropriate, since three bands on the day's bill have songs in the game), and general people/hipster watching/ogling. Both Leto and MySpace phenomenon Tila Tequila made for popular backstage photo ops.

Following an all too sunny set by Interpol (another band stuffing CD racks on July 10) that was cut short due to equipment problems, the revolving stage spun around to reveal a surprise performance that at first caused more head-scratching than high-fiving. A 14-member a cappella group in tuxedos was putting its unique spin on Incubus' "Dig." Confusion turned to screams, however, when Incubus' Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger walked out a minute later to join in.

While the Killers had been scheduled to appear in that slot, last-minute health problems sidelined frontman Brandon Flowers. "There was another band with a lead singer named Brandon and he got sick," Boyd jokingly told MTV News. "I know what that's like, and it sucks, so they called another band with a singer named Brandon because that's kind of the theme they were going for." The power of YouTube connected Incubus and the singing group, called Ithacapella, after Boyd saw an online clip of their version of "Dig."

The last time the next band had an album out, YouTube was barely a dream. But Orange County's own Social Distortion did what they do best, playing the favorites that will appear on their greatest-hits album due June 26, complete with the new track "Far Behind."

(See Incubus' Brandon Boyd talk about the male choir that opened the band's set.)

The crowd instantly recognized the next act within the first few riffs of its opening number, going into a frenzy that lasted throughout the entire heart-pounding set. Singer Jonathan Davis even prompted a rarely seen over-the-head hand clap from a SoCal audience for the entirety of "Got the Life." New material came in the form of "Evolution," from July 31's still-untitled new album (see "Korn Are Cracking Up Over Eighth LP's 'Gothic Feel,' Munky Says").

Davis was clearly beaming backstage after the performance, which was the band's first full gig with some new members. "It was pretty much a coming-out show in the new lineup because we got [guitarist] Clint [Lowery] from Sevendust and we got [percussionist] Joey [Jordison] from Slipknot up playing with us and it's a different Korn," he said. "It sounds insane — the drums are insane, everything going on is completely different. So after tonight I think we're really, really stoked."

(See Jonathan Davis talk about Korn's "insane" set.)

Closing out the evening were locals Linkin Park. "We ... grew up listening to KROQ, and I remember coming here last year just as a fan of the show and walking around seeing the different bands," guitarist Brad Delson said backstage, "so not only to be playing it this year but to be headlining is a huge honor."

(See Brad Delson talk about Linkin Park's set.)

As the band kicked things off with "One Step Closer," the crowd showed it still had plenty energy left to cheer, sing and mosh to the most anticipated act of the day's bill. Fans hadn't forgotten any of the old songs, singing along during "Numb" and "Somewhere I Belong," among others, but they showed the same amount of enthusiasm for new tracks off the just-released Minutes to Midnight.

When Linkin Park were done, though, and the last note had finally faded away, concertgoers were confronted with something not at all new to them: an enormous traffic headache as some 16,000 people all left the same parking lot at once. Aye-yi-yi!

For more sights and stories from concerts around the country, check out MTV News Tour Reports.

The organizers behind the annual Voodoo Music Experience festival — which invades New Orleans' City Park on October 28 and 29, attracting more than 50 rock and hip-hop acts, along with tens of thousands of music lovers — have added My Chemical Romance, the Wu-Tang Clan and the Flaming Lips to the expanding roster of artists who will grace the event's three stages.

The Voodoo Music Experience's eighth installment will also feature Social Distortion and the Kings of Leon. According to the festival's Web site, the lineup will continue to expand in the coming weeks as more artists are confirmed.

This year's Experience will be headlined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the first night, with Duran Duran set to close out the festivities. Other artists performing at the weekend event include Jack's Mannequin, Broken Social Scene, Secret Machines, Ozomatli, Blue October, Drive-By Truckers, Brazilian Girls, the Rentals, Ferry Corsten and Yerba Buena.

Last year's fest was the first major event held in the Crescent City in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which hit August 29. Instead of nixing the entire event, organizers originally announced that they'd move Voodoo to Memphis' Tom Lee Park. Soon after, they had a change of heart and decided to split the festival into two parts, with the first night's concert staged in New Orleans, and the second in Memphis (see "Voodoo Music Experience Returning To New Orleans For A Day").

The event boasted a bill that alternated national headliners — Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, H.I.M., the New York Dolls, the Bravery, Secret Machines, Digable Planets — with local favorites. Voodoo served as a tribute concert for relief workers, military personnel and others who helped to rebuild the battered Gulf Coast. Tickets were free, and Red Cross volunteers, firefighters, police and members of the National Guard turned out in force (see "Voodoo Fest, With Nine Inch Nails And QOTSA, Brings New Orleans What It Needs: Fun").

Weekend passes for 2006's Voodoo Music Experience are available through the festival's Web site.

Ludacris appears in court to defend 'Stand Up'; Pharrell LP gets new launch date; Avenged trade barbs with Dillinger Escape Plan.

Ludacris appeared in U.S. District Court in New York Tuesday as the 2004 suit accusing the rapper and Kanye West of ripping off the hook to "Stand Up" comes to trial, The Associated Press reports. The lawsuit claims that New Jersey rap group I.O.F. passed along demo tapes including the song "Straight Like That" to West and Ludacris, who then used the track's lyrics and beat for "Stand Up." Ludacris and West maintain that they didn't hear "Straight Like That" until the suit was filed. The trial is scheduled to run through the week, and Ludacris and West — who was not in court on Tuesday — are expected to testify. If the rappers are found liable, damages will be assessed in a penalty phase. ...

The debut solo album from Neptunes mastermind Pharrell Williams is finally (re)scheduled for release after months of delays. In My Mind is now expected to drop July 25, according to a spokesperson. It will include guest spots from Jay-Z, Daddy Yankee, Gwen Stefani and others and be preceded by the new single, "Number 1," featuring Kanye West. ...

A beef between Avenged Sevenfoldand the Dillinger Escape Plan is taking shape. According to Dillinger's MySpace page, a feud had been festering for several months when Avenged frontman M. Shadows turned up the heat during a recent interview, saying Dillinger "make sh---y noises and try to pass it off as music." "What about bands that make sh---y noise and try to pass it off as Guns N' Roses?" a Dillinger MySpace post read in response. "This guy and his merry band of musical clowns get more hilarious by the minute. M. Shadows' real name is Matt Sanders or some sh--." With that in mind, Dillinger say they've decided to change their stage names in derision. "So, in his honor, our new names are officially as follows: G. Piranha, Blaster Master Weinman, Bullwhip Benoit, Corpsef---er Pennie [and] Leafeater Wilson. Those are going to be the names on our new CD — 100 percent serious." ...

Pete Yorn will spread the word about his forthcoming album, Nightcrawler, with a 36-gig acoustic tour that launches June 22 in Santa Barbara, California, and wraps August 12 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Nightcrawler hits stores August 15. ... Influential punks Social Distortion, will be back on the road for a two-week run this summer. The band's trek kicks off July 3 in Las Vegas, with a handful of gigs booked through July 15 in Denver. The Supersuckers and Nine Black Alps will open. Social D are still working on material for the follow-up to 2004's Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll. ...

Gorilla Biscuits are getting back together this summer for a 27-date U.S. tour that will coincide with the impending re-release of the hardcore icons' classic 1989 LP, Start Today. The yet-to-be-scheduled reissue will feature in-depth liner notes by guitarist Walter Schreifels and a DVD featuring the band's 2005 reunion set at New York's CBGB. The tour kicks off August 4 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and wraps up September 2 in New York. ... Another recently reunited group, post-hardcore act Lifetime, have announced plans for a spate of gigs in July. The Bronx have been tapped to open five shows in Allston, Massachusetts (July 10); Buffalo, New York (July 13); Cleveland (July 14); Chicago (July 15); and Detroit (July 16). Details on additional dates will be announced in the coming weeks. ...

You win some and you lose some — even when you're Elton John. The singer accepted a $188,000 libel settlement from the British Daily Mail newspaper on Wednesday (May 24), AP reports. Daily Mail had claimed in a June 2005 issue that guests at a charity ball were forbidden to approach John, a report that caused the singer "considerable embarrassment and distress," his lawyer noted in a hearing at London's High Court. Other happenings across the Atlantic may also have Elton hurting. "Lestat," the Broadway musical based on Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles" and featuring music by John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, is closing after only 39 performances. The $10 million show's curtain will drop for the last time Sunday. ... Ian Copeland, a booking agent who represented R.E.M. and the Police, died Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Copeland — brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland — succumbed to melanoma after battling the disease for many years. He was 57. ...

After initially pushing back two Paris shows in order to allow guitarist Keith Richards to fully recuperate from brain surgery following his recent mystery accident, the Rolling Stones announced Wednesday that they will postpone 15 dates on their Bigger Bang European tour, according to a Reuters report. Richards, 62, is back in the U.S. recuperating from recent surgery in New Zealand to repair damage from a concussion allegedly sustained when he fell out of a coconut tree while on vacation in Fiji last month. The shows were supposed to start in Barcelona on Saturday and run through July 5 in Zagreb, Croatia. Rescheduled dates are expected to be announced before week's end, with the tour slated to pick up again in early July at a yet-unannounced venue. ...

Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson was nearly killed in a hit-and-run accident in the British city of Leeds over the weekend. Wilson, who was struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk on Sunday evening, was spared serious injury by one of his patented onstage leaps, according to a post on the band's Web site. "He's the luckiest man alive, because he is still alive, it sounds daft, but a 'Ricky trademark jump' has probably saved his life," the post read. "The jump meant he was flipped over the top of the car, hitting the windscreen, rather than getting trapped under it." Wilson, who suffered a broken toe and bruises, was crossing on a green pedestrian light when he was struck by an unidentified driver; police are investigating the incident. Wilson is expected to be well enough to perform on the band's upcoming dates June 2-4 in Holland and Germany. ...

Nicole Richie and DJ AM are back off. The pair released a statement on Monday explaining that they have called it quits after a brief reconciliation. "We are confirming that we have amicably separated," the brief statement read, according to AP. Richie and AM called off their nine-month engagement in December but were back together in recent months. ... Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has named her baby daughter Bluebell Madonna, inspired by the flower and "the singer, whom I love," she tells British magazine Hello! Bluebell was born May 14 in London.

05.23.2006

50 Cent was named Songwriter of the Year on Monday, as the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers presented its Pop Music Awards in Beverly Hills, California. Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" shared Song of the Year honors with Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (written by Johnta Austin, Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal). Green Day also took the Creative Voice Award, while Annie Lennox was presented with the Founders Award. The ceremony featured a brief Eurythmics reunion, as Lennox was joined by guitarist Dave Stewart for a performance of her solo hit "Why." ...

Madonna is catching some heat from the Catholic League following the Sunday launch of her Confessions world tour, in which she wore a crown of thorns and sang "Live to Tell" while hanging from a mirrored cross. "When the Material Girl first embraced Kabbalah, we thought her newfound faith would inspire her to show some respect for religion," said Bill Donohue, who heads up the Catholic civil-rights organization, in a statement issued Monday. "But I guess you really can't teach an old pop star new tricks. Madonna has been spicing up her act with misappropriated Christian imagery for a long time now. ... Do us all a favor, Madge, and stick to singing and dancing." Madonna's tour continues through September 4, with dates throughout North America and Europe. ...

U2 and Mariah Carey took home handfuls of Grammys less than four months ago, but it's already time to start planning for next year's big event. The 49th annual Grammy Awards will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 11, it was announced Tuesday (May 23). The ceremony will air live on CBS. ... The Hip-Hop Action Network's Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment went down in Miami over the weekend, drawing Fat Joe, Pitbull, Remy Ma, MC Lyte, and members of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and the Diplomats. Action Network Chairman Russell Simmons was there too, of course, and Doug E. Fresh acted as summit co-moderator. ...

Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the Gorillaz and the man who put faces to Murdoc, 2D, Russel and Noodle, was honored as the Designer of the Year by London's Design Museum on Monday. Hewlett was awarded approximately $47,000 for his contributions to the group's graphics, "live" performances and Gorillaz.com. A collection of Hewlett's work will be on display at the Design Museum through June 18. ... Legendary rocker Lou Reed headlined a free concert in New York on Tuesday, marking the grand opening of the building at 7 World Trade Center — the first new edifice at the World Trade Center site in its outdoor park. The bill also features Brazilian Girls, Citizen Cope, Ollabelle and Suzanne Vega. ...

Julia Roberts, Anna Paquin and Martin Short

Gwen Stefani's Tragic Kingdom Dress Jacked From O.C. Museum

Dress taken in broad daylight from exhibit celebrating Orange County's rock history.

The No Doubt archives suffered a loss this week when the dress Gwen Stefani wore on the cover of Tragic Kingdom, the band's 1995 breakthough LP, was stolen from the Orange County, California, museum where it was on temporary display.

The red vinyl dress was reported stolen from the Fullerton Museum Center on Tuesday, where it was a part of the exhibit "The Orange Groove: Orange County's Rock n' Roll History," which runs through May 22. According to a statement released by the band's label, the dress was likely stolen between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday.

The dress was on a mannequin and mounted on a stage three-and-a-half feet high that was surrounded by plexiglass.

"It probably would have taken two people: one as a lookout, one to take it," said Sergeant Steve Matson of the Fullerton Police Department. "We're focusing in on possibly two females that may have been involved, and we're in the process of taking yearbooks to people who work at the museum to see if they can identify them."

"Someone must have given this some thought to vault [the stage] during daylight business hours," said "Orange Groove" curator Jim Washburn. "We're trying to figure out how this was accomplished. It's awfully selfish, almost sociopathic, to think that your interest in the band matters more than anyone else who would want to see it," he said.

Stefani's dress was a central item in the exhibit, which celebrates the musical legacy of the O.C. and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, which was created in Fullerton. Other No Doubt items in the collection are band photos, instruments and awards, including their 2003 Grammy for "Underneath It All" and 1997 MTV Video Music Award for "Don't Speak."

Guitars from the Offspring, Mike Ness of Social Distortion (whose axe was featured on the cover of the band's 1990 self-titled album) and items from the O.C.'s folk, hippie and punk scenes are also included.

The theft of Stefani's dress — which had been on loan to the Hard Rock Café in the past — marks the first time anything has been stolen from the museum in 17 years, according to Washburn. The museum decided to publicize the robbery on Tuesday in hopes that it would expedite the return of the dress.

"Our foremost priority in this matter is the safe return of the dress, as it means a lot to the band," Interscope Records said in the statement.

The Fullerton Police Department is currently investigating the theft, but the label has asked that anyone with information on the whereabouts of the dress contact the police department at (714) 738-5336 — or return it to the museum's after-hours drop-off box, "no questions asked."

[This story was updated at 4:28 p.m. ET on 01.12.2005]

Teen singer/actress can't best country group Rascal Flatts.

Sometimes it's hard to feel sorry for Hilary Duff. She's got a clothing line, a huge tour and a fledgling movie career. But what she still doesn't have is a #1 album, as her self-titled second release will fall just short of taking the top spot on the next Billboard albums chart.

According to SoundScan numbers released Wednesday (October 6), Duff's album sold 191,852 copies last week — good enough for a #2 debut — but she couldn't overtake Rascal Flatts, the country-music pretty boys whose third album, Feels Like Today, moved 200,946 copies, giving them their first #1 debut.

Another reason to feel sorry for Duff: a precipitous drop-off in sales. Her debut album, Metamorphosis, sold nearly 12,000 more copies during its first week of release in August 2003.

Things are probably a whole lot cheerier in Ciara's camp, as the 18-year-old rode the success of her single "Goodies" to a #3 debut. Her album of the same name sold 124,750 copies, good enough to place her ahead of two previous Billboard champs: Green Day and Nelly. The Bay Area punks fall three spots to #4 after selling 123,613 copies of their punk opera, American Idiot. Nelly's Suit follows at #5, with sales of 118,358 copies, while that album's companion piece, Sweat, drops to #8 after selling 79,927 copies.

Orem, Utah, gutter punks the Used moved 93,240 copies of their second album, In Love & Death, for a #6 debut. The band's self-titled first album failed to crack the Billboard albums chart when it was released in 2002. Behind them is the final studio album from Ray Charles, Genius Loves Company, which holds steady at #7 after selling another 81,401 copies. Since its release in late August, Genius has never left the top 10.

Marilyn Manson's greatest-hits album, Lest We Forget: The Best of Marilyn Manson, bows at #9 on sales of 78,715 copies, while Tim McGraw rounds out the top 10 with Live Like You Were Dying. Just missing the top 10 is British soul singer Joss Stone, whose Mind, Body and Soul sold 73,487 copies for a #11 ranking.

Now That's What I Call Music! 16 lands at #12 (72,390 copies sold), just ahead of four new entries. Brian Wilson's Smile, an experimental studio project the Beach Boy abandoned 37 years ago, sold 65,089 copies to land at #13, followed by New York MC Talib Kweli's Beautiful Struggle (62,633), former "You Hear It First" band Interpol's Antics (62,538), and Queen Latifah's jazz-inspired Dana Owens Album (61,493).

Two other "You Hear It First" artists scored solid debuts: rapper Guerilla Black's Guerilla City, which opens at #20 (46,023 copies sold), and Disturbing Tha Peace's Shawnna, who lands at #22 with Worth Tha Weight (42,680). Not far behind Shawnna is the chart's biggest freefall, Chevelle's This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), which plunges 17 spots to #25.

Other notable debuts include influential punkers Social Distortion at #31 with Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll; MTV2's Headbangers Ball Volume 2 at #43; the Shaolin's own Wu-Tang Clan at #82 with their live Disciples of the 36 Chambers: Chapter 1; goth-rockers Cradle of Filth's Nymphetamine at #89; and the Jerry Garcia Band at #118 with After Midnight: Kean College, 2/28/80.

Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore, California, on August 25 for the first "Do Something Day," according to the event's publicist. Jim Lindberg's wish list for salute to L.A. punk group also includes Social Distortion, Blondie, Hank Williams III.

If Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg has his way, Gwen Stefani will do her best Exene Cervenka and Art Alexakis will do his best John Doe for an X tribute album.

No Doubt, Everclear, Social Distortion, Blondie and Hank Williams III are among the artists Lindberg hopes to enlist to cover songs by the seminal Los Angeles punk band for the project, expected next year.

"I have trouble thinking anyone's going to turn us down," Lindberg said last week.

"We're going to suggest certain songs, and if they want to do something else, that's fine. Certain songs just fit — I can really hear Social Distortion doing 'White Girl' and No Doubt doing 'Your Phone's Off the Hook (But You're Not).' We'll just make suggestions and hopefully they'll be into it.

"I'm just hoping it comes out really cool and it's something [X] can get some enjoyment out of," he said.

Long-time X fan Lindberg said he decided to make the album after a similar effort, to which Pennywise was contributing a track, stalled. Pennywise recorded a version of "We're Desperate," with Lindberg and Cervenka trading vocals, for that album, but ended up using it for the sixth Punk-O-Rama compilation. Punk-O-Rama 2001, due June 5, also features unreleased tracks by such bands as NOFX and Descendents.

Pennywise will release Land of the Free? on June 19 and assume their headlining spot on the Vans Warped Tour June 22.
