Fred Durst may have picked a winner for his new guitarist.

Former Snot guitarist Mike Smith is likely to join Limp Bizkit, according to a source close to the band. Smith played with Limp Bizkit during their performance of "Rollin' " and the new song "Crack Addict" at WrestleMania XIX on March 30, as did Korn's Brian "Head" Welch, who "played just for fun," according to a post on www.limpbizkit.com.

"We really like jamming with Mike," Durst wrote on the site. "He's dope. This you will find out soon enough."

Fans can gauge Smith's "dope-itude" for themselves in May, when Durst promised to embark on another "guerilla tour" of free shows. Bizkit employed a similar tactic following the release of 1999's Significant Other, wherein the location of each concert was announced only that morning.

Official word on Smith's enlistment and other details are expected shortly from Limp Bizkit's label, Interscope Records.

Smith replaces founding guitarist Wes Borland, who split with the group in October 2001 (see "Wes Borland: Why He Left Limp Bizkit").

Durst also claimed that the new Limp Bizkit album, due June 17, is nearing completion. The follow-up to 2000's Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water had been called Bipolar, and Less Is More before that, so despite Durst's latest claim that it now carries the moniker The Search for Teddy Swoes, it's hard to know for sure what will be scrawled across its cover.

It's also not known whether recent collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, and Bubba Sparxxx will appear on the LP (see "Snoop Dogg, Bubba Sparxxx May Appear On Limp Bizkit Album").

Korn, Snot Guitarists To Play With Bizkit At Wrestlemania

When Limp Bizkit perform at Wrestlemania XIX on Sunday, Korn's Brian "Head" Welch and Snot's Mike Smith will fill the guitarist slot that once belonged to Wes Borland.

Fred Durst made the announcement in a post on the band's Web site on Wednesday (March 26), but he didn't elaborate on whether either of them would join the band permanently

While Durst himself and other guitarists have done most of the recording for Limp Bizkit's next album, Smith has long been rumored to be Borland's replacement. "We've been working with Mike for a while," Durst confirmed in his message. "He's dope."

Management was not available to comment on Wednesday. Jonathan Davis said recently that Head is definitely not leaving Korn.

Meanwhile, Durst noted the proper follow-up to 2000's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, due June 17, would not be titled Bipolar. He said the current name is Fetus More, a possible play off the original Less Is More, but he noted that that's only "until I decide it shouldn't be."

"Whatever I'm feeling it is on the day the artwork is due, then that will be the final title," Durst wrote.

Durst had previously declared the album was done and being mixed, but he has since collaborated in the studio with Jay-Z (see "Fred Durst And Jay-Z Get 'Rebellious' On New Studio Track") as well as Snoop Dogg and Bubba Sparxxx (see "Snoop Dogg, Bubba Sparxxx May Appear On Limp Bizkit Album").

"We are gonna go back in the studio Monday and record three more songs," Durst wrote. "We just can't stop the creative process. As soon as we think we're done, some other phat-ass riff comes barreling out of our amps. Next thing you know we have another song."

Also on Wednesday, Durst denied that "Just Drop Dead," a song he recently posted on the Web site, is about Britney Spears, as many had speculated. "It's about a girl who acts like a whore," he said (see "New Limp Bizkit Song Disses Durst's Fizzled Flame").

Elsewhere in the post, the frontman revealed that Limp Bizkit will play "Crack Addict" and "a surprise song" at Sunday's WWE event. He also announced that a new Web site would launch soon, and he asked fans to call his manager to suggest what type of single the band should release.

"I'm feeling the majority of everyone wants us to drop a super heavy traditional Limp song first, and some people want something totally opposite. I'd like to hear what you think," Durst wrote, before listing his manager's phone number.

In Stores Now And Coming Soon: New Music From Linkin Park, Bruce Springsteen, Amerie, Filter & More

This week Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band, and their new album, The Rising, are poised to deliver a musical response to September 11, starting with, of course, the band's version of "My City of Ruins," which Springsteen played at the "America: A Tribute to Heroes" telethon last year.

Following in the Boss' wake are a bunch of less somber, more indulgent releases, starting with Linkin Park's Reanimation, yet another addition to the seemingly never-ending list of artists who won't stop tinkering with their own, previously released material. While the group prefers to call it a "reimagination" of songs from Hybrid Theory, it's a remix album.

Next up is wrestler Chris Jericho's metal outfit Fozzy, complete with alter egos (more to stroke!) and a mock backstory of how the group came to be. Their second album, Happenstance, finds Moongoose McQueen and gang a bit more serious about their own music, though they still rock out with classic covers like Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules."

The third exercise in vanity is obvious just by scanning the list below, where you'll find it nearly impossible to ignore one particular band who, following in Pearl Jam's footsteps, decided to simultaneously release 19 live albums — one for each of its shows from its most recent tour.

More traditional releases this week come from newcomers Amerie and Lamya who both issue their debut albums, All I Have and Learning From Falling, respectively, in addition to the soundtrack to the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Top Dog/Underdog," which features tracks from both of the show's stars, Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright, plus contributions from DMX, Jay-Z and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Also look for new music from Filter The Amalgamut and X, the first release from Def Leppard since 1999's Euphoria. Feels good just thinking about it.

With flu season upon us, the timing couldn't be more perfect to brace yourself for some live Snot.

Mikey Doling, former guitarist for the SoCal punk quintet who now wields the axe for Soulfly, is putting the finishing touches on a live album, according to a Snot spokesperson. Snot Alive, captured during the group's show at the Palace in Hollywood in May 1998, is being mixed at a Malibu studio. Although a label deal has yet to be struck, the spokesperson hopes the album will arrive in stores come spring.

After the release of Snot's debut album, 1997's Get Some, frontman Lynn Strait was killed in a car accident on December 11, 1998 (see "Snot's Lynn Strait Dies In Car Crash"). A tribute album, Strait Up, composed primarily of unfinished material for their next album sung by guest vocalists, including Korn's Jonathan Davis, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath and System of a Down's Serj Tankian, was released almost two years later.

Doling has about a week's worth of work left on the LP, which gives him a few days to rest before Soulfly hits the road with Static-X for a three-week jaunt that begins January 31 in San Francisco (see "Soulfly Break From Studio For Tour With Static-X"). The tour should give Doling a much-needed respite from the studio, as Soulfly have been clocking in recording time for their new album, the follow-up to 2000's Primitive, which they hope to have out in the spring.

Snot Alive track list, according to a group spokesperson:

As the drummer for '90s neo-metal miscreants Snot, Jamie Miller bashed out colossal, hard-hitting beats that meshed with the band's agonized vocals and fist-in-face rhythms. After the tragic death of Snot vocalist Lynn Strait, Miller's former bandmates, bassist John "Tumor" Fahnestock and guitarist Sonny Mayo, resurfaced in the equally abrasive Amen. But Miller has made a new beginning with the modern pop band TheStart.

Like other drummers, including Dave Grohl and American Hi-Fi's Stacy Jones, Miller has been reborn as a frontman, writing all the music and performing guitar and keyboard parts and background vocals for TheStart. The
group's debut album, Shakedown!, which comes out Tuesday, blends buzzing guitars with '80s analog synths and perky girl-rock vocals, sounding alternately like the Go-Go's, the Cure, Missing Persons, No Doubt and the
Buzzcocks — not exactly what you'd expect from a guy who used to bash skins on turbulent tracks like "Get Some" and "My Balls."
"We just saw a couple kids at one of the shows the other night," Miller said from his hotel in El Paso, Texas, where his band is opening for Sugar Ray and Uncle Kracker. "One of them had a Snot T-shirt and one had 'R.I.P.

Lynn' written on his knuckles, and they both turned out to be big Start fans. I never thought that people who liked Snot would be into this band at all, but a lot of them are. They appreciate the differences between the two bands."
TheStart's poppy vibe is all the more surprising considering that two of the other bandmembers, vocalist Aimee Echo and drummer Scott Ellis, used to play in the noisy alt-metal combo Human Waste Project. Not that TheStart's
peppy sound is any sort of reaction against the testosterone-fueled riffs of most nü-metal.
"Anger is fine and I like a lot of the bands that do that, but I think I just got all of that out of me on the Human Waste Project," said Echo, who's dating Miller. "Anyway, I don't think what we're doing is total pop, it's a little rougher. Coming from the bands we came from, there's gonna be that harder edge no matter what. It's just in our gut."
On songs such as "Dirty Lion," which echoes with warbling keyboards and electronic handclaps, and "Her Song," which rattles along with a bobbing beat and lush, chirpy chorus, TheStart definitely rock, but they do so in a way
that's somewhat redolent of '80s pop and new wave.
"When people say that, it always makes me laugh," Echo said. "My theory is that people started calling punk bands new wave when they learned to play too well. As soon as musicians learn to play more than three chords or add synthesizers, they're called new wave."
"There was never a conscious effort to sound like any one thing," Miller added. "When we started the band, we had an idea that we wanted to be influenced by all the music that we liked and grew up on. The rest just sort of happened."
In October the group will head out with Incubus for a month, and then they'll tag on to the tail end of this year's Family Values Tour. As much as their kinetic music helped them land these bills, their connections didn't hurt them any.

"We're all part of one big, stupid, happy, incestuous L.A. family," Miller said with a laugh. "Snot's first tour was with Sugar Ray and on our second tour we took Incubus out as an opener."
"And when some of the Incubus guys were in high school they used to open for Human Waste Project," Echo added.

Although TheStart have been on the road only since July 10, they've been well received by Sugar Ray's crowds, and they've already logged a few stranger-than-fiction experiences. One involved a Dallas radio DJ who wanted to show her appreciation to the band for playing an acoustic set on-air, so she made them her own human waste project.

"She bought us a toddler potty," Echo said. "She filled it up with yellow Jell-O and stuck a Baby Ruth inside the Jell-O. It was the foulest thing I've ever seen in my life."
For those who still haven't lost their appetite for Snot, Miller referred to a live recording from a 1998 show at the Palace in L.A., which he and his ex-bandmates would love to see released. He added that Immortal Records,
which issued the Lynn Strait tribute, Strait Up, last year, may eventually put out the disc.

"Lynn was an incredible force on this planet," said Echo. "For good or for bad, he touched everyone that he met."
Lynn Strait died in a six-vehicle crash on a freeway exit ramp in Santa Barbara, California, in December 1998 (see "Snot's Lynn Strait Dies In Car Crash").

The thriving new-metal scene salutes one of its most charismatic performers this week with the release of Strait Up, a tribute album to late Snot singer James Lynn Strait.

Korn's Jonathan Davis, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Slipknot's Corey Taylor are among the dozen contributors on the album, due Tuesday (November 7).

"It's a very good summation of Lynn's life," Tankian said of Strait Up. "It's his friends that wanted to say something back to him, show him that they appreciate him being in our lives and his spirit being among us. Everyone really put their heart into it."

Strait was killed in a car accident on December 11, 1998, while driving from his home in Santa Barbara, California, to Los Angeles to begin recording Snot's second album. He was 30.

Snot and System of a Down played so many shows together in their early days that fans would just assume if one was playing,
the other would be as well, Tankian said. The two bands also toured on Ozzfest together.

"I remember one time these kids were jumping offstage and the security guards were beating up on this one kid," Tankian recalled. "Lynn stopped the show, jumped into the crowd and started hitting the security guard. You don't know many performers that would do that. Lynn was very into justice. 'This kid isn't hurting anybody and you're beating up on him for your own egomania, so I'm going to beat up on you and see how you feel about it.' "

Strait also made headlines in July 1998 during an Ozzfest show in Massachusetts, when he interrupted Limp Bizkit's set by entering nude from their giant toilet backdrop. He was arrested for indecent exposure.

"He never stopped himself from doing anything that he really wanted to do," Tankian said. "He didn't let life pass him by."

Tankian wrote "Starlit Eyes," the leadoff track on Strait Up, about the first time he met
Strait. "His eyes were very radiant and vibrant," Tankian said. "His character totally came through in his eyes. He was very kind to people, very generous."

Doling said there is a possibility some of the bands on Strait Up will gather for a tribute concert in L.A. and donate the profits to charity, but details have not been worked out. "I just want to let people know about Lynn," Doling said, noting that he hopes Snot will gain more fans from the tribute album.

"It's a tremendous honor to be on that album," Boyd said. "Lynn will be missed."

Sevendust's Lajon Witherspoon and Morgan Rose are expected to hook up with members of Sugar Ray, Incubus, System Of A Down, Disturbed, Soulfly, Coal Chamber, and other friends of Lynn Strait to shoot the first video from an upcoming tribute album devoted to the late Snot frontman.

Witherspoon and Rose will also be joined by members of Medication, Spineshank, Ultraspank, and Nothingface this weekend to shoot the clip for "Angel's Son" from the upcoming LP "Strait Up." As we previously reported, the album finds Strait's friends and colleagues putting lyrics and vocals to the songs he had planned to record with Snot before his death in 1998 (see "Korn's Davis, Limp's Durst, Others Line Up Studio Time For Snot Tribute"). Witherspoon penned the lyrics for "Angel's Son" and can be heard on the track.

Ozzy Osbourne, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Korn's Jonathan Davis, Incubus' Brandon Boyd, Slipknot's
Corey Taylor, Soulfly's Max Cavalera, System Of A Down's Serj Tankian, Coal Chamber's Dez Fafara, (hed) pe's M.C.U.D., and RKL's Jason Sears also turn up on the album, which hits stores on November 7.

After releasing one album on Geffen Records in 1997 and greeting the masses on Ozzfest '98, Strait was killed in a six-car accident while driving from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles on December 12, 1998. At the time of Strait's death, Snot had already written nine songs for its next album. Surviving Snot members John "Tumor" Fahnestock, Mikey Doling, and Jamie Miller recorded the instrumental portions of those songs and then recruited a procession of hard-rock colleagues to write and record vocals.

When the results of those efforts hit stores on November 7, here's what fans will find:

Ozzy Osbourne - interlude
Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath featuring Whitfield Crane - "Reaching Out"
Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst - "Forever"
Korn's Jonathan Davis - "Take It Back"

Soulfly's Max Cavalera - "Catch A Spirit"
System Of A Down's Serj Tankian - "Starlit Eyes"
Sevendust's Lajon Witherspoon - "Angel's Son"
Coal Chamber's Dez Fafara - "Funeral Flights"
(hed) pe's M.C.U.D. - "I Know Where You're At"
RKL's Jason Sears - "Until Next Time"
Incubus' Brandon Boyd - "Divided"
Slipknot's Corey Taylor - "Requiem"

Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis will become the latest artist to lend his talents to the upcoming tribute to late Snot singer Lynn Strait, and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Coal Chamber's Dez Fafara, and Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath are all lined up to do the same within the coming week.
Davis will meet up with Snot bassist John "Tumor" Fahnestock at Santa Monica, California's 4th Street Recording Studios to lay down vocals for his contribution to "Strait Up." As we reported last year, the collection will feature a rotating cast of frontmen singing songs that were written for the sophomore album that Snot never got the chance to record.
When last we checked in with the project, the band had recorded tracks with Soulfly's Max Cavalera and Marcello D. Rapp, System Of A Down's Serj Tankian and Shavo Odadjian, (hed) pe's M.C.U.D., and RKL's Jason Sears (see "Korn's Davis, Sugar Ray's McGrath, Limp's Durst, Others To Salute Snot Singer").

At the time, the band also received verbal commitments from Korn's Davis, Sugar Ray's McGrath, Limp Bizkit's Durst, and Coal Chamber's Fafara, but had not yet lined up studio time with the singers. However, Fahnestock now says that Davis, Fafara, Durst, and McGrath have all locked in studio time. After Davis lays down his vocals on Tuesday, Fafara will hit the studio on Wednesday, Durst will head in on Friday, and McGrath will do his part next week.
"We knew that with some of the bigger acts, this time of year is when you have your only downtime," Fahnestock told MTV News of the sudden flurry of activity on the project.
Deftones singer Chino Moreno is also planning to record a track for the album, though he is currently busy working on his band's new album.
Fahnestock (who is producing the album with fellow Snot member Mikey Doling) said that they hope to be finished with recording on "Strait Up" by the end of February and hope to have the album in stores this summer.

After releasing a major label debut on Geffen Records in 1997 and touring with the 1998 edition of Ozzfest, Strait was killed in a six-car accident while driving from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles on December 12 of 1998.
"He was one of the best frontmen out there," Fafara recalled of Strait. "He had a style that was undeniably unforgettable."
When Strait passed away, the band had already written nine songs for its next album, and Fahnestock and fellow Snot members Doling and Jamie Miller decided to record the instrumentals and bring in various friends of Lynn to provide lyrics and vocals for the tracks.
"Jonathan and a good friend of Lynn's collaborated on the lyrics," Snot bassist John "Tumor" Fahnestock told MTV News of Davis' contribution.
So far, Fahnestock and Doling have finished five tracks: Soulfly's Max and Marcello join System Of A Down's Shavo on "Catch A Spirit," System's Serj has recorded "Starlit Eyes," RKL's Sears finished "'Til Next Time," (hed) pe's
M.C.U.D. recorded "I Know Where You're At," and Incubus' Brandon Boyd polished off "Divided (An Argument for the Soul)." Fafara is working with the tentative title "Illumination" for his track, and admits that the project is highly emotional one for him.
"I tried to start writing, and I put the music on and tears just came out of me," Fafara said. "I told my girlfriend, 'I can't write this now.'
"We were friends on a personal level," Fafara explained. "He was a wild man, and people really appreciated that."
Fahnestock conceded that taking the music of "Strait Up" (and all responsible for it) out on the road would be virtually impossible, but noted that he may try to put together a one-off tribute show. For now, though, he's just pleased with the outpouring of support that he and Doling have found for the project.
"So far, everything has fallen into place exactly the way we hoped it would," Fahnestock.
"It's going to be a great tribute," Fafara said. "It's a
wonderful way to pay tribute to Lynn."

-- Robert Mancini
What do you think about this story? You Tell Us.

August 7 would have marked the 31st birthday of Snot frontman Lynn Strait, who died in a car accident last December, and fans are trying to pull off a fitting tribute to mark the occasion.
A move initiated by loudside.com and picked up by the official Soulfly Web site (at www.soulfly.com calls for fans to head to retailers on August 7 to buy copies of the band's 1997 debut "Get Some." The goal is to get as many people as possible to buy as many copies of the album as possible to make one big chart impression in memory of Strait.
Strait died in a six-car accident on a freeway exit ramp while driving from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles on December 12.
After releasing its debut album, Snot had seen its audience swell after landing a slot on last year's Ozzfest tour. At the time of his death, Strait's band had finished recording 10 tracks for its sophomore effort and had also recorded a good deal of live material. Fans hope that making a bold chart statement will not only honor
Strait, but will also entice a record label into releasing some of this material.
