Rappers Smilez and Southstar began working together in the late '90s, when they met in the Orlando competitive hip-hop scene. They began to work together on occasion, although they were still primarily known as solo artists. They both started ghostwriting for larger hip-hop acts, even taking time to do street team work for various labels.
