Federal Transportation Safety Administration officials are investigating a breach of security at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport on Thursday involving Paula Abdul and a companion, according to The Associated Press. Southwest Airlines was alerted to the breach while the "American Idol" judge's 12:20 p.m. flight was in the air and then screened all passengers and baggage once the plane landed in Burbank, California. A McCarran spokesperson told the AP that someone not employed by Southwest Airlines, the TSA or the Department of Aviation, led Abdul past the mandatory checkpoint. ...

Four "American Idol" hopefuls were sent packing Thursday night, narrowing the field for the show's fifth season to 16. Brenna Gethers, Heather Cox, David Radford and Jose "Sway" Penala scored the fewest votes in the second round of "Idol" eliminations determined by the viewers. Host Ryan Seacrest revealed that more than 42 million votes were cast this week. ...Tool have titled their upcoming album 10,000 Days, according to the band's spokesperson. The record is due around their Coachella performance on April 30. ...

Matisyahu will descend upon Tower Records in Northridge, California, for a live performance two days after the release of his new album. Youth hits stores March 7, and customers who purchase the Hasidic rapper's disc at Tower in Northridge will receive a wristband for the gig and signing two days later. The show will be staged in the Tower Records parking lot, and the first few hundred people who buy Youth beforehand will be able to stand in front of the stage. ... Thursday night, fresh off their European tour, Detroit's Slum Village gave an intimate performance at Club Twenty Twenty in Santa Monica, California. During the show the group — which dropped its self-titled album last year — paid tribute to recently deceased friend and hip-hop producer Jay Dee. ...

Former Jackson 5 drummer Johnny Jackson was found dead at his home in Gary, Indiana, on Wednesday night, according to The Associated Press. The 54-year-old was found stabbed in the chest not long after a neighbor complained of a disturbance between Jackson and a woman on the first floor of his complex. The unidentified woman has yet to come forward, and no murder weapon was found at the scene. Police are currently treating the case as a homicide and an investigation is still taking place, according to the AP. Johnny Jackson, who grew up near the Jackson family home, joined the superstar pop group — which included a young Michael Jackson — in 1967, replacing original drummer Milford Hite. Reports have varied over the years as to whether or not Johnny was directly related to the Jackson clan. ...

When is a band sticker on a bicycle more than it seems? When police think it's an act of terrorism. Officials at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, shut down four buildings and called out the bomb squad on Thursday when they spotted a bike with sticker that said "this bike is a pipe bomb." According to the AP, it turns out the sticker was a promo for a punk band of the same name, but police didn't find that out until they blocked off streets for blocks around the Oasis restaurant near campus and called in the bomb squad from 65 miles away. The bomb experts hit the bike with a high-pressure hose and tore it apart with a Jaws of Life device before finding out that it was the name of a Pensacola, Florida, band on Plan-It-X Records. The bike's owner was interviewed by cops and released without charge. ... The U.S. Justice Department said Thursday that it had opened an investigation into alleged price-fixing in the sale of digital downloads, according to the AP. The inquiry is almost identical to the one launched in December by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, according to two music industry executives. The Justice Department would not name the companies it has targeted. ...

" The audience will watch as either history — or just mistakes — are made. The series follows the rockers over a two-week period in Las Vegas; rock manager Doc McGhee will guide the guys through the process. The entire experiment will culminate with a massive concert in Sin City. ... Lamb of God will hit a Richmond, Virginia, recording studio on March 13 to begin pre-production on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's Ashes of the Wake. The metallers have once again called on producer Machine (White Zombie, Bloodsimple) to helm the LP. The video for "Rosenrot" promises to be disturbing, involving burning at the stake and authentic scourging and flagellation, sans stuntmen (not surprisingly, it's already been banned from daytime play in Germany). ... Alkaline Trio will kick off their Occult Roots of Alkaline Trio: Early Songs for Eerie People Tour on March 30 in Sparks, Nevada.

The 411: You may wonder who in the world John Monopoly is and where he's returning from, but John actually hasn't been gone from the scene at all — Love is just welcoming him back home to his native Windy City. Monopoly has served as an A&R rep at Violator and as an executive at Jive, he played a key role in signing rap blue-chip prospect Dirtbag, and even more notably, Monopoly manages Kanye West.

Joints To Check For:

"Mike Love's Workout Plan" by Kanye West. This is actually a remix of Kanye West's "The New Workout Plan." Not to be confused with the upcoming Lil Jon remix of "The New Workout Plan," this Mike Love exclusive has more of a club-tailored house music beat.
"The Food" by Common featuring Kanye West. Com premiered this joint a few months ago via a performance on "Chappelle's Show." Common is in straight throwback mode, rapping with the pinpointed b-boy poignancy that blessed such albums as Resurrection (1994) and One Day It'll All Make Sense (1997). He and Kanye rhyme about hustling — not for the riches and the Bentleys, but to feed families. "Paper can't change a man's aura, it can feed a man's daughter," Common raps. "I stand for the blue collar on the side, making a few dollars/ Like Sam Jack, they maneuver through drama."
"I'm Rick James Bitch" by Ill/Wolf. You've heard plenty of MCs reference one of the most famous skits from "Chappelle's Show," where Dave Chappelle imitated Rick James (see "Dave Chappelle: The Reason Grandmas Know Who Lil Jon Is"), but this underground cat from the Chi has taken it upon himself to make a whole song from the perspective of the legendary Super Freak. The excessive use of the "b" word is probably going to be a little too much for some, but you can't be too upset at somebody who has the audacity to actually rap over a sample of Rick James' "Ebony Eyes."

Eminem Joins Russell Simmons For Hometown Hip-Hop Summit

Eminem is working with Russell Simmons to help spread the word about what a positive effect hip-hop can have on urban communities politically, socially and economically. Simmons' Hip-Hop Summit Action Network will be sponsoring their latest Hip-Hop Summit on April 26 in Slim Shady's hometown of Detroit.

Taking place in Cobo Arena, Em and Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be two of the event's co-hosts. D12, Rev. Run, Redman, Method Man, N.O.R.E., the D.O.C., Doug E. Fresh, Petey Pablo, Slum Village, the Bass Brothers, Cam'ron and the Diplomats, and Keith Murray are among those confirmed to attend.

"For me, Detroit symbolizes hip-hop in a lot of different ways," Eminem said in a statement released Thursday (April 17). "Everybody who's been involved in Detroit hip-hop culture here has spent years trying to bring light to the city the same way Russell worked to bring hip-hop to the attention of the world and the same way the mayor is working to put Detroit back in the spotlight. It's the struggle to be heard and to be recognized. It's our time, both hip-hop's and Detroit's."

"It's a big deal and there's gonna be all these artists performing, there's gonna be 18,000 people and the summit is going to be during the NAACP convention," Simmons explained on Tuesday. "You're not going to believe how dramatic and life-transforming it can be for some of the kids who come. Our commitment is to help empower the youth of today, who are the most gifted and talented generation of young people that we've ever been blessed to have. Assembling in Detroit, amidst its rebirth under a dynamic, young 32-year-old hip-hop mayor, is a great tribute to the power of hip-hop."

Simmons' reps say the theme for this year's summit is "The Remix: Rebuilding ... Refocusing ... Reinvesting ... Resurgence." During the NAACP festivities the next night, Simmons will receive a lifetime achievement award from the organization.

On July 12, Eminem will also be at the center of a major shindig in his hometown. He'll be headlining his only scheduled U.S. concert this year at Ford Field (see "Em's Hometown Concert In July Might Be The Eminem Show"). 50 Cent, D12 and Missy Elliott are also on the bill.

Slum Village want their new album to take listeners on an historical tour of
sorts. Scheduled for an August 13 release, Trinity (Past, Present and
Future) represents the three musical schools of the Detroit group,
whose sonic brethren include the Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

"We broke the album into three segments," group member T3 said of the follow-up to 2000's Fantastic, Vol. 2. "The 'Past' is the old school, the
Slum Village sound from like the Vol. 2 album. The 'Present' is more in
your face, clubbish-type joints. The 'Future' part of the album is like
futuristic soul, but with a retro type of sound. We were trying to give you
three different feels for the album. We wanted to give people what Slum
Village was, where we're at today and where we're going."

Unlike groups that feature indistinguishable rappers, Slum Village has
distinct roles for its three members. The sage Baatin holds it down for the
past, spokesperson T3 represents the present and newcomer Elzhi reps
for the future. (Jay Dee, the group's primary producer, left the group
to pursue a solo career, though he did produce three Trinity tracks as alter ego
Jay Dilla.)

Wanting to pick up where Fantastic, Vol. 2 left off, Slum Village return
with "Tainted," a mellow cut that encourages people to take command of their
own circumstances. "It's a good soulful joint, a feel-good joint that's
definitely romantic in a sense, too," T3 said. "You have all those
elements, and then there's a positive message behind it, too."

Other cuts on Trinity showcase Slum Village's diversity.
Party-starting Scott Storch sizzler "Get Live" and fellow club cut "Slumber"
generate excitement while "Harmony" represents the "Future" portion of the
collection.

This new diversity comes courtesy of a multitude of producers handling the
beats. Jay Dee produced all but two of the Fantastic cuts, but is joined
on Trinity by Storch, Hi-Tek, Waajeed, Karriem Riggins and Nottyhead.

This rotating cast also includes the introduction of Elzhi, whom T3 has
known since 1996. The two met at Detroit's Hip-Hop Shop, which was also
frequented by Eminem, D12 and Royce Da 5'9''. T3, who was looking for an
artist to manage, started recording with Elzhi but was so impressed with his
work that he took him in as a full-time Slum Village member.

Elzhi, who earned his MC stripes in rhyme ciphers, brings a new element to
Slum Village's sound. "Before Elzhi, we were more like witty, freestyle, just
feelgood, in-the-pocket type of guys," T3 said. "Elzhi brings more of an
intellectual way. He speaks more directly. Slum Village, we always speak
indirectly. It's for you to put the pieces together, for you to figure out
what we're trying to say."

Many Slum Village fans were trying to figure out what the Slum Village
Dirty District album was when it arrived in stores at the end of June.
Rather than being the new Slum Village album, as it appeared, the album was
a Slum-sponsored compilation that showcased Slum associates Phat Kat, Mu,
Fuzz and others.

"There's a lot of stuff coming out of Detroit," T3 said. "There's so much
talent here and the diverse part comes from everybody being cliquish. That
makes us develop our own sound, and I like that. I don't want people to
identify Detroit as one sound. I want people to say, 'These guys are
creative as a whole 'cause you don't know what you're going to get from
Detroit, but it's going to be tight in its own way.' "
