While not a part of the latest "Star Trek" flick, William Shatner, according to a post on his Web site, is planning to record an album, with Ben Folds, who employed some sampled Shatner on his Fear of Pop side project, as producer. The former T.J. Hooker achieved cult notoriety with his 1968 recording The Transformed Man, which featured spoken-word versions of then-current pop songs, such as "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "Mr. Tambourine Man." ... After taking a break to release solo albums, the Cardigans have re-formed to record their fifth album, Long Gone Before Daylight. Due in March in the U.K., the record will feature guest appearances from fellow Swedish bands the Hives, the Soundtrack of Our Lives and the Hellacopters. ... The upcoming sequel to "The Fast and the Furious," co-starring Paul Walker, Tyrese and Ludacris, will carry the promotional tagline "2 Fast 2 Furious" beneath "The Fast and the Furious 2" logo, according to a Universal Pictures spokesperson. Following a stint in rehab to address his drinking problem, Filter leader Richard Patrick recently posted on the band's official site that he is working on a "killer" song with an unnamed friend he met on the Family Values Tour for inclusion on an upcoming summer soundtrack, as well as a new Filter album. Patrick said he's also finishing an all-instrumental album under the name Carpet, which he's recording when he's not playing with the Anakin Skywalker Light Saber movie replica he received from his girlfriend for Christmas. ... H2O frontman Toby Morse has teamed up with fellow New York hardcore luminaries Freddy Cricien and Hoya Roc of Madball in a new project called All Ages. After two major-label albums, Primer 55 have been laid to rust due to "creative and personal issues," guitarist Bobby Burns said in a statement. Former chairman and president of cymbal maker Avedis Zildjian died Thursday in Scottsdale, Arizona, of cancer. Arman Zildjian, 81, was a descendant of Avedis Zildjian, who founded the eponymous company in 1623 in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey, with an innovative alloy of copper, tin and silver that made exceptional cymbals. The company still uses the original formula, which is kept secret. ... R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, country balladeer Steve Earle, the jam-happy Widespread Panic and indie rockers Yo La Tengo are among the artists paying tribute to the world's most eclectic bar band, NRBQ.
