Sahara Hotnights Bring Their Three-Minute Thrills To The States Again

Fresh from a U.S. tour with the Hives, the all-girl Swedish quartet is back in September for another monthlong trek.
By Alyssa Rashbaum

"Three minutes is good," says Sahara Hotnights guitarist Jennie Asplund. "It's all you need ... for a good thing."

Of course, she's talking about the length of most of the Swedish band's songs.

The all-female Hotnights — whose latest album, Kiss & Tell, was released late last month — proudly wear their pop-punk influences on their stylish sleeves. The Ramones inspire the album's tight, short and manic tracks (all of which, save one, are under four minutes long), and their rowdy rebelliousness is borrowed from '70s rockers the Runaways, although a more contemporary reference might be a more melodic, less boy-crazed Donnas.

The group takes a similar approach to creating an album, recording just what it needs and leaving no tracks on the studio floor. "We write what we have to write," singer Maria Andersson said. "I always wonder why all these bands say they have 50 songs, and then they end up with 10 on the album. You wonder what crap the rest [of the songs] were."

Fresh from a tour supporting the Hives (Andersson and Hives vocalist Pelle Almqvist are a couple), the group is about to hit the road again to support the new album. Maria doesn't seem too broken up about embarking on a tour without her man. Asked about touring together, she simply said, "It's fun; we've done it before." Guitarist Jennie Asplund added, "We're all good friends; it's always nice to go on tour with friends."

The foursome, rounded out by Johanna Asplund (Jennie's sister) on bass and Josephine Forsman on drums, will begin their U.S. tour on September 5 and finish October 6, supporting Phantom Planet on a smattering of dates. The band is completely unfazed that it only has a 10-day break between tours. "We're just gonna tour and tour and tour," Andersson said.

"That's our thing," Jennie concurred. "It's just gonna be fun."

The first single from Kiss & Tell, "Hot Night Crash" — which the band admits to picking simply because it's the catchiest track on the album — shows the band playing to a bullring full of disenchanted Mexican men, but the reactions of the band's audiences have been much stronger.

"We're really happy with the turnout," Maria said. "It's the way we want it to be. I love it."

Sahara Hotnights tour dates, according to their publicist:

With just one major release this week, live albums from veteran rockers and new releases from smaller acts get a chance to shine.

The heavy-hitter this week is newcomer Kevin Lyttle and his R&B-tinged soca sound. Backed by the radio and television success of his ubiquitous single, "Turn Me On," Lyttle releases his self-titled debut album this week.

B.G., the rapper who popularized the all-important phrase "bling bling," releases his Life After Cash Money. Guests on the album include Snoop Dogg, Soulja Slim and Juvenile.

After the loss of two bandmembers last summer followed by talks of calling it quits, Taking Back Sunday took back control of the band and put together a follow-up to their debut album, 2002's Tell All Your Friends. Where You Want to Be hits stores this week.

Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers barrel onto shelves with live albums. Live at Benaroya Hall October 22, 2003 follows a whole mess of live LPs released by Pearl Jam last year. The Chili Peppers' Live in Hyde Park is their first release since their 2003 greatest-hits compilation.

Swedish band Sahara Hotnights are back in action after a three-year absence. The group's third studio album, Kiss & Tell, drops this week.

Guns N' Roses bassist Tommy Stinson will release his first solo album, Village Gorilla Head. The album contains material the former member of the Replacements has compiled over the last 10 years.

Badly Drawn Boy is back with his fourth album, One Plus One Is One, the follow-up to 2002's Have You Fed the Fish?

The buzz around New York band Scissor Sisters has been steadily growing for some time. The androgynous group will release its self-titled debut album of glam-inspired rock, pop and dance tracks.

Alt-country band Old 97's drop their sixth album, Drag It Up, the group's first since 2001. Indie pop rockers the Kings of Convenience hit fans with Riot on an Empty Street this week. And on the harder side of things are releases from Kittie (Until the End) and Otep (House of Secrets).

Also hitting shelves is the newest "Now That's What I Call Music!" compilation, Now 16, with tracks by D12, Outkast, Beyoncé, Christina Milian, JoJo and a slew of others.

Over the past year, numerous bands from Sweden — including the Hives, Division of Laura Lee, Soundtrack of Our Lives and Sahara Hotnights — have been creating a roar on these shores. Some have even toured together, solidifying the idea of a Swedish invasion.

As fond as they are of their compatriots, Sahara Hotnights don't want to be lumped into a regional scene. That may explain why they tapped into the crass, distinctly American world of "Jackass" for their first U.S. video, "Alright, Alright (Here's My Fist, Where's the Fight)," and why they recently recorded a song with English dance remixer William Orbit.

The video, shot in a Los Angeles club on November 7, was directed by Jackass auteur Jeff Tremaine, and co-stars the misfits' biggest ass, Steve-O. It will include scenes from "Jackass: The Movie," but also features an original storyline about a guy plagued by bad luck who desperately tries to make it to a Sahara Hotnights show.

"He gets beaten up and messed up [in the process], said singer Maria Andersson. "[At one point,] he tries to steal a balloon from a little girl and she kicks him."

Sahara Hotnights, who appear on the "Jackass" soundtrack, weren't present for the scenes shot outside the club, so they missed out on any staple gun interaction or shopping cart collisions (see "Steve-O Suffers For His Art, And It May Land Him In Jail"
</news/articles/1456408/20020801/story.jhtml>"), but they're looking forward to seeing the entire clip. And they're big "Jackass" fans.

"I actually think it's hilarious," Andersson said. "It's fun to watch and it's just stupid. I'm never going to understand it. I'm just amazed people actually do such things."

In addition to involving themselves with "Jackass," Sahara Hotnights recently recorded with William Orbit. The resulting electro-tinged rock song, "Run," will appear on Orbit's latest album, scheduled for release next year.

"It's good to do some things that are not just Sweden, Sweden, Sweden," Andersson said. "There are lots of good bands from there, but there's so much hype. I just hope it's not going to ruin anything for these bands after the hype dies."

Except for the inclusion of "Self Evident," a post-9/11 poem on Ani DiFranco's live double CD, So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter, this week's releases are steering clear from addressing the first anniversary of September 11, 2001 (see "Artists Debate Releasing Discs Near 9/11 Anniversary" ).

Aside from DiFranco, more girls with guitars who are issuing new albums are the Bangs (Call & Response) and anti-Ace of Base Swedes the Sahara Hotnights, whose Jennie Bomb is their first U.S. effort. Meanwhile, Lynda Stipe (sister of R.E.M.'s Michael) and her '80s band Oh-OK are rediscovered with The Complete Oh-OK, which features the early, early work of Matthew Sweet.

Former Arrested Development member Speech and former Pharcyde member Tre Hardson both try thei hands at solo efforts this week with Spiritual People and Liberation, respectively. And the Yohimbe Brothers, a duo made up of Vernon Reid of Living Colour and DJ Logic from Eye & I, release Front End Lifter, which reunites Reid with all of the original members of Living Colour and includes guest spots by Prince Paul and Slick Rick.
