Singer Gwen Stefani and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, welcomed their second son on Thursday (August 21), according to a statement from Stefani's label, Interscope Records. The child, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, was born at 12:46 p.m. PT and weighed eight and a half pounds.

"Mother, baby and family are all happy and healthy," the statement read.

Zuma is the couple's second son, joining Kingston, who turned 2 on May 26.

The birth of her second child crests an already busy year for Stefani, who earlier this summer told fans that she was getting back together with No Doubt to record their first studio album in seven years.

At the time of the announcement, Stefani said she was working throughout her pregnancy.

"Feels crazy to be pregnant all over again!!!!!" she wrote on the message boards of her band's Web site. "We have been spending every day up in the little studio in our house, trying to write music. My favorite part so far is just seeing the guys every day and hanging out. We have so much fun together. The songwriting part is a bit slow on my part. ... I think it has something to do with the baby in my belly, but I'm sure it is all of the process, and I really believe this could be the most inspired No Doubt record so far. Can't wait to see what happens."

It is unknown whether the birth of her second child will delay the album, which had been pegged for an early 2009 release.

It's also unclear how the 38-year-old Stefani and 40-year-old Rossdale settled on the name Zuma, although it's worth nothing that there's a Malibu, California, beach called Zuma not far from the couple's Los Angeles home. Neil Young named one of his albums Zuma in honor of the same beach. Zuma is also a popular surname in South Africa. Also, the baby shares one of his middle names, Nesta, with Bob Marley.

Gavin Rossdale Gets 'Aggressive,' Political On First Solo LP, But Don't Expect Any Gwen Stefani Cameos

Former Bush frontman hopes Wanderlust finds the audience that Institute never did.
By Chris Harris

On Tuesday, Wanderlust, the first true solo LP from former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, hit shelves worldwide. While it does boast an exhilarating cameo from Garbage's Shirley Manson (on the track "The Trouble I'm In"), the album will not feature a duet with No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, Rossdale's pregnant pop-star wife. In fact, it's unlikely such a collaboration will ever materialize on tape, he admitted.

That's because for Rossdale, the idea is just too much of a rock-and-roll cliché. He's no Sonny, and Gwen's no Cher. They're too very different artists, and he said they'd like to avoid combining their professional and personal lives.

"It's bad enough with the whole intrusive, paparazzi-celebrity-weird-photo life," he said. "I like mystery. The people I care the most about, whether it's in music or films or art or whatever, I don't really need to know anything about them. The less I know about them, the better, because then I can just have my own unfiltered image of them, and whatever they do publically, for me, can just work its magic. When we get burdened by people at Starbucks, it just takes away from that mystery."

Wanderlust, which was produced by Bob Rock (Metallica), is Rossdale's first studio offering since Institute — the band he formed after Bush's 2002 split — released their 2005 debut, Distort Yourself. And Stefani's hunky hubby claims that anyone who liked his work with both bands will find something to love on this new record.

"There's a reality that, when I sing with a guitar, it can sound similar to the last time I sang with a guitar," he said. "I can't help that. So people who enjoy either of those bands will enjoy this record. It's quite an aggressive record, which emancipated me a bit. I could bring the guitars back a little bit and let the atmosphere take over, which is what I've always tried to do anyway. This record allowed me to try something different, and with every record, I've always tried to do something different. Sometimes, when records have been less successful than others, I've always thought I'd screwed up, and that I should have done the same record."

Distort Yourself was one such record, having sold a mere 57,000 copies to date in the U.S. And the lukewarm reception to it was disappointing for Rossdale, who ruled out an Institute revival.

"Bands are like sharks — they've got to keep moving," he said. "[Institute was] a dead shark. It didn't really work out, but I just think that if people hear [Wanderlust], and they like it, they may investigate the Institute record. There are tracks on the Institute record that could've fit on this record easily, but that's just the way it goes. You try to make everything good, and every once in a while, you get one that takes off."

What struck Rossdale most about Institute was how "indifferent" people seemed toward the disc. "Love and hate...that's the sort of thing you get used to if you sell more than 20 copies of your record. So, it was just the fact that it couldn't make a big enough of a splash," he said. "We went on tour with U2, and they liked the record. I guess it's just too difficult to come from a successful band and start a new band, and I felt weird doing it anyway."

Rossdale said he gets political for the first time on this album, but the message isn't as overt as the kind you'd find in, say, Rage Against the Machine tunes.

"Some of the songs are reflections on the war," he said. "I took it quite to heart when Neil Young said bands of the younger generation weren't really making too much music about the war, and I thought, to a degree, he was right. I would never clothe it in a political statement, because I think Rage are the only band that can do that and have a kind of resonance to it. For me, it was about personalizing it. I have to go on tour and do this life, and it's hard for me to leave my family, but I can't imagine what it would be like to leave your family, and be under the threat of gunfire, the threat of being killed. I only get killed in print."

This summer, Rossdale will be touring mostly overseas in support of Wanderlust, but he is mapping out a U.S. headlining run for the fall.

All Gavin Rossdale wants to do is take his band, Institute, out on tour.

Normally this would be a no-brainer. After all, Rossdale's former band, Bush, sold more than 11 million albums during their late-'90s heyday, and he is married to that Gwen something-or-other from No Doubt. Plus, his new band features members of influential alterna-rock acts Orange 9mm and CIV, and their debut album, Distort Yourself, was produced by Helmet's Page Hamilton.

But it's not that easy. After all, Rossdale's been off the scene for almost five years now, and during that time he's watched his wife's career eclipse his. And Helmet, though they released an album just last year, haven't been a viable force since 1994's Betty. So basically, with Institute, Rossdale is starting over at square one — though with considerably more clout than your average new band. Which puts him and his group in a rather unique position: They're sort of a headlining act and sort of an opening act, though they can't be both.

"Right now, we're looking at several different scenarios and deciding whether or not we are going to do our own thing or take a slot opening for someone," Rossdale said. "Sometimes I think that the best way to build up a fanbase for Institute is to do what Bush did: just tour our asses off. But then I don't think that we'd want to open for a lot of acts today.

"Of course, there are a few acts I'd consider opening for, like Depeche Mode on their world tour or some sort of band like that," he continued. "But I also think that the idea of us opening for someone like My Chemical Romance — who I actually like very much — would obviously be kind of sad."

So that's where Institute find themselves today, with a record on the shelves (Distort debuted at #81 on this week's Billboard albums chart) and no tour to speak of. But Rossdale hopes that will all change, especially with the band's first single, "Bullet Proof Skin," rising up the rock radio charts like, um, a bullet.

"It's good that radio has been playing the song, because it's my one chance to leap back into the public consciousness, to tell them, yeah, I'm back," Rossdale said. "And it's kind of an interesting song to be played on so-called 'modern' rock stations because it's a song about modern life as a treacherous jungle. It's about survival in 2005, about the pressures of life in the city and how you need bulletproof skin to make it out alive. It's a really primal song about survival."

The whole primal theme is alive and well on Distort Yourself, from the thundering herd of stallions that grace the album's cover to the song "When Animals Attack" to the guttural, growling guitars and pounding drums that sound like a saber-toothed tiger battling a woolly mammoth in a fireworks factory. It's a running theme that Rossdale fully acknowledges (he even dedicates the album to his bulldog Winston, who died last year).

"Well, yeah, we're a primal band, with power and strength. When I listen to our music, I get this vision in my head of rust. I think we're a rust-colored, powerful, modern rock band," he laughed. "We're primordial, we're primates, it all sounds like a massive primal scream. And I can't be happier with it."

Hopefully his fans will be able to witness the primal rock and roll circus in the near future. Rossdale's instinct tells him it will happen soon, and — much like an animal — he's choosing to go with that. He's always taken pride in living his life based on his instincts, and from his success with Bush, his marriage to Stefani and his new opportunities with Institute, it seems to have paid off.

"It's funny because people think I'm some sort of cardboard cutout, some celebrity. And while I do live in the spotlight, I try everything to avoid falling into that mindset," he said. "I always tell people to go with their gut feeling. Instinct is everything. It's basically how I've lived my life, and it's pretty much worked for me."

NEW YORK — An estimated 800 supporters gathered in Washington Square Park on Wednesday afternoon in a last-ditch effort to save New York's CBGB, the rundown club that helped birth American punk rock. But it was all for naught.

During the event — which featured performances by Public Enemy, Blondie and Gavin Rossdale's new band, Institute — the club's landlord issued a statement to the press, effectively driving a proverbial stake through the venue's 31-year-old heart.

"Today, CBGB's lease expires and is not being renewed," wrote Bowery Residents' Committee Executive Director Muzzy Rosenblatt (see "Good Charlotte, Audioslave, Blink-182 Weigh In On CBGB's Plight As Deadline Looms"). "[The] BRC has already been forced to divert precious funds and resources toward a lengthy rent dispute with the club and believes it is in the best interest of our clients — the homeless and neediest New Yorkers — to sever this relationship. We hope that CBGB will vacate the premises both voluntarily and expeditiously and avoid costly eviction proceedings that will further hinder our 35-year mission to help the homeless."

In the meantime, "CBGB Forever," a rally orchestrated by E Street Band member and "The Sopranos" thespian Steven Van Zandt (see "Benefit Events Planned For CBGB"), carried on.

Gavin Rossdale's band Institute, drenched from head to toe in sweat, rocked the tattooed, "Save CBGB" T-shirt-donning masses (which was surprisingly short on mohawks, actually). Bad Brains' H.R. and his band Dub Trio infused the activist spirit of reggae into the proceedings. New Jersey punks the Bouncing Souls rallied the troops with one of the afternoon's tightest and longest sets, warming things up for Debbie Harry and Blondie, who captivated the diverse crowd with playful renditions of "Hanging on the Telephone" and "One Way or Another."

House of Pain's Everlast introduced Chuck D et al. by saying, "New York City can't let this place go away" because "it would be a crime." He also took the low road, screaming words everyone who preceded him onstage perhaps wanted to say but couldn't: "F--- the guy standing in the way." Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and the rest of Public Enemy capped things off by challenging everyone in attendance to "Fight the Power."

Before the concert started, Van Zandt, unaware that the death knell had tolled for CBGB, took several shots at Rosenblatt, claiming "no one in New York City wants CBGB to leave, except Muzzy.

"He refuses to talk about a new lease," he continued, calling the club a "historic" and "sacred" site worthy of long-term preservation. He was flanked by two "Sopranos" co-stars: Tony Sirico, who plays Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri, and Joe Pantoliano, known to fans of the mob drama as Ralph Cifaretto. "This isn't about money. It's about one guy's ego trip. We'll keep fighting this. Bands will play CBGB tonight. Bands will play CBGB tomorrow night, and they'll keep playing until Muzzy comes to his senses."

Van Zandt even spoke of the petition he'd presented earlier this week to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg with the names and signatures of more than 30,000 of his constituents, including 43 city council members. On Tuesday, during a press conference, Bloomberg threw his support behind the club, calling it "a great New York City institution" (see "CBGB's Fate Uncertain As Final Hours Of Lease Tick Away"). He explained that his office had tried to intervene in what became a lease-renewal stalemate, and even offered to help CBGB owner Hilly Kristal find a new locale within Manhattan's borders should the BRC move to evict.

Rosenblatt's statement added that "BRC appreciates the efforts of Bloomberg's office during the last few weeks to mediate this matter," but that "we have concluded that the best course of action is to move on. To that end, we fully support the mayor's efforts to find the club a new home, and we will continue to support and work with Bloomberg and all concerned New Yorkers to end the tragedy of homelessness in New York City."

For Kristal, the fight's over. His iconic landmark club will be boarded up — just when is the question. Although the "Save CBGB" camp could not be reached for comment, if BRC moves to evict, it's likely the matter will find its way to a courtroom. So theoretically, it could be months before the iconic Bowery landmark is boarded up, and Kristal's club's relegated to the annals of rock-and-roll history.

During the rally, Van Zandt vowed that "if eviction proceedings happen tomorrow, we will go to the courts and we'll fight it. It's not over till it's over. We'll be there until someone drags us out. We don't care what Muzzy says."

Before launching into "When Animals Attack," from their forthcoming disc Distort Yourself, Institute frontman Rossdale said his former band Bush's first U.S. gig was at CBGB. "It's such a legacy, it's insane," he commented. "Let's hope they figure it out. It's a cultural landmark. Even outside of America, CBGB is synonymous with New York, with music." The crowd exploded when Institute unleashed a cover — if you could call it that — of Bush's "Machinehead."

After his band played "Hopeless Romantic" and "The Ballad of Johnny X," Bouncing Souls frontman Greg Attonitoi recalled how one of the group's first gigs came on audition night at CBGB: "We played for two people." At one point during their set, the Souls invited a bored-to-tears H.R. out to the stage for a rendition of Bad Brains' "Pay to C--," and then incited the crowd with "East Coast F--- You."

It was clear, though, that at least one person on hand was aware of Rosenblatt's decision: Alan Gerson, a Democrat on the city council whose lower Manhattan district includes CBGB. Before Public Enemy took the stage, Gerson likened CBGB to Radio City Music Hall, saying they're both city landmarks that contribute to the culture and "vibe" of the metropolis. He added that the BRC was not doing "good by destroying good" and urged Rosenblatt to be a "responsible recipient of public funds," as the city of New York contributes more than $30 million a year to the organization's annual budget.

He also said if the BRC moved to evict that it might be time to "rethink the support we've given [the organization] in the past." He ended his remarks by putting a twist on an infamous chant from one of the many legends CBGB helped foster, the Ramones: "Hey, ho, we're not gonna go."

Gavin Rossdale's been out of the rock-and-roll game going on four years now. The former frontman for British post-Nirvana modern-rockers Bush said his band's been in something of a holding pattern since guitarist Nigel Pulsford's revelation — not long after the release of 2001's Golden State — that his passport had been stamped for the last time, and he'd be touring no more.

So Rossdale decided that if he were to return to rock's front lines, he'd have to do so in drastic style. Forget about going the tender route of the softhearted solo troubadour — in the words of brusque celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, it was time to turn it up a notch.

"I didn't want to do a softer record than Bush, because I thought that would be maybe more expected," Rossdale said. "I thought what would be cooler would be to do something a little bit heavier, a little stronger. I wanted to make a more forceful record."

To that end, Rossdale recruited Helmet mastermind Page Hamilton to produce his first post-Bush project, and assembled a band called Institute, made up of a veritable who's who of hardcore: former Helmet/ Orange 9mm guitarist Chris Traynor; bassist Cache "Utah Slim" Tolman, formerly of Civ, Rival Schools and exploratory jazz metalloids Iceburn; and drummer Charlie Walker (Chamberlain, Split Lip).

"What I wanted to do with this record was make it very spacious and very muscular," Rossdale said. "Sometimes there's as much music in the space as there is in the sound. So a stripped-down kind of record was the intention. With Page producing it, I couldn't help but have that aesthetic being in my head — of that kind of hardcore genre, of the Helmet thing. It was right in there. This, for me, is such a natural process, creating these large rocks songs. It's kind of second nature."

Institute's tentatively self-titled album — slated for an early fall release with the first single, "Bulletproof Skin," expected at radio later this summer — is a departure from Rossdale's work with Bush. Producer Daniel Lanois even sings with Rossdale on several of the tracks.

Rossdale said the band will soon shoot a video with "XXX" director Rob Cohen, whom he met when he contributed a solo track, "Adrenaline," to that film's soundtrack a few years back. Also, "Bulletproof Skin" appears on the soundtrack to Cohen's forthcoming Jessica Biel flick, "Stealth," about a fighter jet piloted by a computer that develops a mind of its own, threatening all of human existence.

For Rossdale, much of the material on Institute's debut — songs like "Boombox," "Animals Attack" and perhaps even more specifically, "Ambulances" — revolves around the theme of self-preservation.

"This idea that people ... you're always trying to find hope, improvement, salvation of some kind. It's a large idea of how to survive. It's a common feeling of sometimes you can be low, and you find your way through with the power of going right into that, headfirst into those feelings, and then you come out. ... I never want to make depressing music, morose music. I like it to be hopeful and uplifting. But you can't do that the whole way. There has to be some sort of a ramp-up to that."

More than anything, Rossdale said, he's anxious to be back on the road again — something he's missed these last few years, which saw him dabbling in acting, appearing in "Constantine" and the forthcoming "The Game of Their Lives." "It's a real bad cliché, but I feel best when I'm onstage," he said.

Still, he can't help but worry about how the new band will be received.

"I'm really excited, but I'm a little bit nervous," he said. "I think those nerves come no matter what, because you're kind of putting your head right out the window for people to either throw eggs at or wave at and say nice things. So you don't really know how it's going to go. But that's another affirmation of being alive and doing something ... I had fun working on those films, but music is my love. So to get back to that, to get back on tour, it's really exciting for me."

The Grammy might be a place where big dreams come true, but the celebrities on the carpet at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards kept their feet planted firmly on the ground — at least when it came to their earth-toned fashion choices.

Yet after witnessing the design shaved into the side of Kanye West's head, it was hard to focus on anything else: He sported mazelike squiggles resembling an exposed brain. (He was otherwise dressed top-to-tail in white.)

(Check out photos of all the hottest looks from the Grammy red carpet.)

For others, however, browns, tans and beiges ruled the day. Usher wore a white vest, brown tie and brown-and-white wing tips; Black Eyed Pea Will.I.Am rocked a chocolate-brown pinstriped suit and a Willy Wonka-style top hat; Ashanti sported a short khaki dress with a plunging neckline and gold-sequined trim; and the Neptunes kept it laid-back in whites and beiges. Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri came as an earthy couple, with Janet in a tawny halter dress and Dupri in a brown fedora and suit; all of Modest Mouse wore beige-and-brown pinstripes; Maroon 5's Adam Levine sported a dark-brown suit and burnt-orange tie;

Gwen Stefani isn't the only member of her household looking to branch off into movies and making music without her bandmates. Gavin Rossdale, frontman for '90s grunge-rockers Bush, has a couple of flicks on the way and plenty of material written for a solo album.

The No Doubt singer's husband is shooting his big-screen debut, an independent flick called "The Game of Their Lives," alongside Wes Bentley ("American Beauty") and Gerard Butler ("Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life"). Rossdale is playing British football player Stanley Mortenson in a story about the U.S. soccer team's surprise victory against England at the 1950 World Cup.

Next up he'll take on a small role in the forthcoming Brittany Murphy comedy "Little Black Book," which has already begun filming and is due out next year (see "Brittany Murphy To Launch A Singing Career").

Earlier this month, Rossdale entered a Los Angeles studio to record demo versions of three songs likely surface on a solo album or perhaps even under a new band's moniker. The lineup for the sessions included Chris Traynor, guitarist for the most recent lineup of Bush as well as a former member of Orange 9mm; drummer Charlie Walker from ex-Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega's Champions of Sound; and Rival Schools bassist Cache Tolman.

Helmet's Page Hamilton — who himself is playing with Traynor, drummer John Tempesta and bassist Blasko (both from Rob Zombie's band) in an outfit that may eventually reclaim the Helmet name (see "Page Hamilton Straps On A New Helmet Lineup For LP, Tour") — produced the tracks and provided some additional guitar work.

Rossdale recorded five albums with Bush, the most recent being 2001's Golden State. The singer/guitarist's first post-Bush solo track, "Adrenaline," surfaced on the soundtrack to last summer's Vin Diesel action flick "XXX."

Like Rossdale, Stefani has logged studio time dabbling with solo material, possibly for a full-blown album (see "Gwen Stefani Recording Solo Material"), and has been combing through movie scripts. This summer she signed on to play old-school starlet Jean Harlow in "The Aviator," director Martin Scorsese's biopic about the reclusive Howard Hughes, who'll be played by Leonardo DiCaprio (see "Gwen Stefani To Play The Original Platinum Blonde In Martin Scorsese Flick").
