Last week, it was all about the Boss. But this week, the Kid rules the roost.

For the first time in his nearly 17-year career, Kid Rock has a record at the top of the Billboard albums sales chart, as his Rock N Roll Jesus sold more than 172,000 copies during its first week in stores, summarily dethroning Bruce Springsteen's Magic, which drops the Boss' latest to #2, according to the latest SoundScan totals. Rock's previous releases came close, but never hit #1: 2003's Kid Rock bowed at #8 with 188,500 scans, while 2001's Cocky opened at #7 with 222,900 sold. Back in 2000, The History of Rock coasted to a #2 debut, with 456,500 units snatched up.

While it might be hard to believe, given the success he's had in the past, Rock N Roll Jesus is the Kid's first LP to open at #1. Harder to believe, perhaps, is how Jennifer Lopez's latest, Brave, fared on next week's top 200.

Before this week, none of J. Lo's previous releases had ever bowed lower than #10. Her first offering, 1999's On the 6, debuted at #8 with 111,500 scans, while 2001's J. Lo entered at #1, selling 272,000-plus units. Then, 2002's J to Tha L-O!: The Remixes followed suit, opening at #1 with sales reported at 156,000, and in that same year, This Is Me ... Then debuted at #6, with 314,000 sold. In 2005, Rebirth claimed the chart's #2 spot with 260,900 sold, and Como Ama una Mujer, which was released earlier this year, opened at #10 with 48,000 copies flying off store shelves.

Unfortunately for Lopez, Brave becomes her first studio LP to debut outside the top 10, finishing the week with sales of 52,600 — which lands the offering at #12.

Beyond that, there weren't many newcomers to next week's top 200 — 17 in all, to be exact, with just four making it to the top 10. Following Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good, which finished at #3 with sales of 96,300 and change, is the new one from LeAnn Rimes, Family, which sold 74,200 units to open at #4. Matchbox Twenty's Exile on Mainstream falls two spots to #5, selling another 71,600 copies, while Kanye West's Graduation climbs one spot to #6 with 71,000 sold. Reba McEntire's Reba Duets goes from #8 to #7, selling 67,500 copies, while the soundtrack to the Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2" follows at #9, having sold 65,800 units.

Sara Evans' Greatest Hits debuts on next week's chart at #8, having generated sales of nearly 66,500, and Josh Groban's Noel rounds out the top 10, selling 64,000 copies during its debut week.

Elsewhere on the chart, Alter Bridge's Blackbird debuts at #13 with sales coming in at around 46,900, with Eric Clapton's Complete Clapton following at #14 with 45,000 scans. The Naked Brothers Band's self-titled debut claims the #23 position with 34,300 copies sold, while Puddle of Mudd's Famous sold 31,200 copies, which lands the album at #27. Band of Horses' Cease to Begin claims the #35 slot with 20,600 scans, and Vanessa Carlton returns at #44 after selling 18,200 copies of her new one, Heroes & Thieves.

Meanwhile, Van Zant's My Kind of Country debuts at #57 with 15,400 scans, and coming in at #58, with 15,200 copies sold, is She Wants Revenge's This Is Forever. The late Luciano Pavarotti's Pavarotti Forever generated first-week sales of 5,100 to land at #148, while the score to this summer's blockbuster film "Transformers" opens at #172 with 4,300 sold. Lastly, debuting at #192 with 4,000 scans, is the latest from Swedish indie-pop rocker Jens Lekman, Night Falls Over Kortedala.

NEW YORK — Blonde ambition wasn't the only thing highlighted at Monday night's premiere of "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde," where the red carpet was pink in spirit, thanks to rose-colored hues worn by the likes of Hilary Swank, "Law & Order"'s Stephanie March and LeAnn Rimes.

Even the film's publicity flacks color-coordinated, turning the entry to the Ziegfeld Theatre into a sea of bottled blonde and precious pink. "I think it's just the mood of the movie, right?" a strawberry-blonde Rose McGowan said of the color scheme. "I'm a fan of pink, I'm a fan of high-heeled shoes, and I'm a fan of strange-looking dogs, so this hits all the notes for me." (Click for photos from the red carpet.)

McGowan didn't have to look hard to find any dogs, either. The film's breakaway star is a Chihuahua named Bruiser who gives his owner, Elle Wood (Reese Witherspoon's returning character of the not-so-dumb-blonde variety), a reason to pack her pink suits and head to Washington to fight for animal rights.

Bruiser may not have been present for the carpet action, but other celebs chose to bring their own pooches, like figure skater Oksana Baiul, who brought both her fiancé and her dog, Boopsik. Boopsik bore such a resemblance to Bruiser that he turned the heads of notables such as Sally Field and Donald Trump and also set off the paparazzi, who upon Baiul's arrival, started angling for the best shot of the wide-eyed dog.

"I love Reese, I love her dog — I think I wanted her dog," Baiul said, explaining why her fiancé bought the pet. "I've watched the first movie like 10,000 times!"

Like the movie, which catapulted Witherspoon to the million-dollar club among Hollywood actresses, fluffy details about hair, clothes and cute little dogs only serve to underscore the film's larger points, such as flipping stereotypes and championing the underdog. No pun intended.

"It's such a power-to-the-people kind of story," director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld said. "It's so fearlessly pink. It's so perfect for anyone that was ever held down and winds up on top. It champions the faith in the human spirit, motivates people to get out of their house, maybe even vote."

Despite being about six months pregnant, Witherspoon made her way down the carpet in a black lace Versace dress and red heels. Accompanied by her husband, Ryan Phillippe, she reiterated the director's take, saying that her activist spirit led her to continue the project, which may already have another sequel in the works, as well as a midseason replacement show on ABC.

"I thought it was an opportunity to make a film that said something," she said. "It's great to be able to do commercial movies, but also be able to have a message that reaches people and really means something."

Just in case that message gets lost in all the frivolousness, Witherspoon took her character's cue and fought to make sure marketing tie-ins such as the Legally Blonde Barbie were not only available at a price the average family could afford, but that a portion of the profits would go to the Children's Defense Fund. "Moms can buy it guilt-free, knowing that the money's going to a good cause, " Witherspoon said. "Even if their kids only play with it for a week, it's a worthy toy to have."

While Witherspoon extolled the virtues of her thinking mom's Barbie — and the actions of her Barbie-come-to-life character — some of her co-stars were less concerned with making sure that "Legally Blonde 2" was portrayed as a message movie.

Her character's sorority sisters, Jessica Cauffiel and Alanna Ubach, just wanted to have fun — they flirted their way down the red carpet, hugging each other, touching reporters' hair and joking about the nature of their relationship. "We just got engaged at a same-sex wedding this afternoon," Cauffiel said, turning to Ubach. "You want to break it on television?"

"Absolutely!" Ubach said, showing off Cauffiel's "engagement" ring.

But before anyone could accuse Cauffiel of just playing into the stereotype of the dumb blonde, country music star LeAnn Rimes came to her rescue, saying that the movie had served its purpose and that blondes had the right to be both smart and silly.

"This is all about the person and not your hair color," said Rimes, who sings the movie's Diane Warren-penned theme song, "We Can." "There are so many successful blondes, such as Reese and myself, that the stereotype is being knocked over. At least in my generation it is."

Dan 'The Automator' Plans Busta Rhymes/ LeAnn Rimes Duet, Nabs Iron Chef For LP

Dan "The Automator" Nakamura isn't just a producer, he is high productivity incarnate. Any man who can produce tracks with Beck and Busta Rhymes, whip together a platinum-selling cartoon supergroup (Gorillaz), record a cult-classic concept album with former Faith No More singer Mike Patton (Lovage), and put out his own rarities mixtape, (Wanna Buy a Monkey?) — all in the span of a year — pretty much defines the term "multitasking."

But apparently all the music production know-how in the world doesn't guarantee you a spot on a hip-hop record.

"Traditionally I've been known to produce rap records but nobody ever hires me to do rap records," laughed Nakamura, who talked recently via cell phone while he shopped for computer equipment. "Hip-hop, on a commercial level, tends to be really restrictive because whatever's hot at the moment is what everybody wants. I'm just trying to do what I'm feeling."

This might explain why Nakamura's own upcoming solo album, Omakase, features such an eclectic lineup. Making appearances are such hip-hop MCs as Maceo from De La Soul and Black Rob, as well as dancehall veteran Beenie Man, the Neptunes, Mike Patton, DJ Q-Bert and even Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, who's making his singing debut.

"I think the problem that everyone has is that there are genres," Nakamura explained. "There are always gonna be people who have one type of music that I like. But what I don't think people are realizing is the relationship between all the genres. The reason I have an appreciation for different kinds of music is because I like different kinds of music, but more than that, I come from a hip-hop era where you can have Run-DMC rhyming over the Knack, or Mantronix and [Boogie Down Productions] sampling James Brown. Sometimes when it's done well the music can mix together and it's not all that different."

By far, the most genre (and mind)-bending cuts on the Automator's solo record will be the songs that will pair artists together based on their names — like LeAnn Rimes and Busta Rhymes.

"Busta's recorded his part already," Nakamura said. "LeAnn, we're having trouble with her label and it's kind of a drag because she wants to do it and her management wants to do it. The track is done and everyone's approved the track. Creatively it's all good, the parts are all ready to go."

While all-encompassing musical exploits like Omakase probably won't do much to get Nakamura the hip-hop work he's been craving, his next Handsome Boy Modeling School album with Prince Paul just might.

"We're really aiming toward more of an urban audience as opposed to my solo record. It's gonna be a lot more hip-hop and we're gonna give people some good fashionable tips for the new year," said Nakamura, who will team up this spring with the veteran DJ for a fall release.

As for the other projects the Automator completed in 2002, namely the records with Beck and the Gorillaz, he expects that those, too, will soon have their day.

"It'll happen, all of that will see the light of day. It's just a matter of scheduling," he joked.

LeAnn Rimes' musical tastes vary from rock and jazz to rap and R&B, and for
the first time she's recorded an album reflecting that.

On Twisted Angel (October 1) Rimes lets only a hint of country creep
in to the 13 tracks, four of which were co-written by the Grammy-winning
singer, who was named Best New Artist in 1996.

Rimes also executive produced the album, which features production work from
Desmond Child (Ricky Martin), Pete Amato (Baha Men) and Gregg Pagani (3LW),
according to her spokesperson.

The singer co-wrote the first single, "Life Goes On," with Child and Andres
Carlsson, and filmed a video it with director Matthew Rolston (Madonna,
Jennifer Lopez) in New Orleans last week.

Perhaps the greatest departure on Twisted Angel, Rimes' eighth studio
album, is "Tic Toc," which finds her singing about her sexual desires over a
techno-influenced beat.

On "Wound Up," which she co-wrote, Rimes sings about a young girl under
pressure to be perfect, and on "No Way Out," she explores the fishbowl
existence that comes with fame, her spokesperson said.

Twisted Angel is Rimes' first album since resolving a contract
dispute with Curb Records a few months ago (see ).

Although she hasn't released an album of new material since 1999, Rimes'
"Can't Fight the Moonlight" from the "Coyote Ugly" soundtrack has been on
the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for 100 straight weeks.

Beck, Deftones and Offspring singer Dexter Holland joined Recording Artists Coalition founders Don Henley and Sheryl Crow at California's State Capitol on Wednesday to support new legislation that could change the relationship between recording artists and their labels.

Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, Matchbox Twenty's Paul Doucette, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Carole King, Ray Parker Jr. and Jonatha Brooke also appeared in Sacramento, California, calling on legislators to support Democratic Sen. Kevin Murray's Senate Bill 1246, legislation that would allow artists to function more like free agents, according to a spokesperson for the Recording Artists Coalition.

Murray's bill aims to repeal Section 2855, Subsection B of the California Labor Code, which states that all entertainers and workers in California, except recording artists, have the right to terminate a personal service contract after seven years.

California's 56-year-old Labor Code protected musicians until 1987, when record companies secured an amendment that made artists liable for albums still owed to labels after seven years with them.

"This practice of singling out recording artists is discriminatory and it restricts the basic American philosophy of free-market competition," Henley said in a statement Wednesday. "A recording artist, like any other working person, should be given the ability to seek higher compensation and test his or her value in the open marketplace."

Joining the Recording Artists Coalition in meeting with legislators Wednesday was the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, along with other prominent figures, including members of the American Federation of Musicians and the Hollywood Entertainment Labor Council.

Hole's Courtney Love, Henley, country singer LeAnn Rimes and others testified on the so-called seven-year statute at a hearing chaired by Murray in September that persuaded the former music agent to pursue legislation (see "Courtney Love, Don Henley, LeAnn Rimes Testify On Artists' Rights").

The Recording Industry Association of America, which represents record companies, believes the 1987 amendment provides needed protection for the labels, who they say take massive financial risks and endure the failure of 90 percent of their acts. The labels argue they will be unable to take risks on new artists if they can not hold on to their profitable acts.

"Recording artists sign these contracts in good faith, fully intending to honor them," the Offspring's Holland said in a statement. "But the record companies know from experience that it is highly unlikely artists will be able to fulfill their requirements due to the demands they place on the artists, including touring, video shoots and other marketing chores. The labor code which exempts artists from the seven-year rule must be repealed to level the playing field and make it fair for everyone."

The Recording Artists Coalition has organized four benefit concerts on February 26, the night before the 44th annual Grammy Awards, to raise money for its cause (see "Ozzy, No Doubt, Korn, Weezer To Play Benefits For Musicians' Rights Group").

Henley and Crow formed the Recording Artists Coalition in 2000 to lobby for artists' rights (see "Henley, Petty, Love Urge Artists To Fight The Labels' Power"). Last spring, the coalition's select members testified before the U.S. Senate on the issue of online rights (see "Morissette, Henley Tell Senate To Remember Needs Of Artists").

A California state senator expects Courtney Love, Sheryl Crow, Don Henley, LeAnn Rimes and the Dixie Chicks will be literally knocking on lawmakers' doors as he introduces legislation to try to free them and other artists from long-term recording contracts.

"One of the major strategies is for artists to directly be involved in advocating for this," the bill's sponsor, Democrat Kevin Murray of Los Angeles, said Friday. "Artists, particularly lately, have been involved in all kinds of wonderful causes, but they rarely have used their star power for their own self-interest.

"With Don Henley and Sheryl Crow's leadership," Murray continued, "they've created a coalition of people who are prepared to go to Sacramento and talk to lawmakers directly, call them and show up at their offices, and explain from the artist's perspective what this issue is about."

Murray said he will introduce the bill — which artists have sought with increasing vigor recently — in January, with the hope that it would go into effect a year later. "We think we've got a good chance to make this happen," he said.

Under California law, entertainers cannot be held to a service contract for longer than seven years. But recording artists lost that protection in 1987 when an amendment was passed making them liable for undelivered albums even after seven years.

Love and the Dixie Chicks have sued their labels, arguing that standard recording contracts are "unconscionable." Love, Henley, Rimes and others testified at a senate hearing chaired by Murray last month on the so-called seven-year statute (see "Courtney Love, Don Henley, LeAnn Rimes Testify On Artists' Rights"). That hearing persuaded Murray to pursue legislation, he said.

His proposal, he said, would level the playing field between artists and labels by allowing artists to function as free agents and test their value in the marketplace.

But music industry veteran Miles Copeland said revoking the amendment would hurt not only the industry but the majority of artists, particularly fresh faces.

"It's a preposterous scam, and I'm absolutely opposed to it, and I am an artist person," said Copeland, who helped launch the careers of such artists as the Police and the Go-Go's and who now runs the indie label Ark 21. "I have been a manager all my life, and I fight for artists, and I think this is detrimental to artists."

Copeland said record companies have to take huge financial risks with their acts and are left with the losses when it doesn't work. Labels will be unlikely, or unable, to take risks on new artists if they can't hold on to their profitable acts, he said. "I've always felt if you don't give a lot of shots, you might miss something great. There is no doubt in mind that if [this bill] succeeds, there will be fewer artists [on labels], there will be fewer records, and it will have an impact down the line on every aspect of the business."

According to Murray, labor organizations including the American Federation of Musicians, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the California Federation of Labor support his legislation.

Courtney Love, Don Henley and LeAnn Rimes went to California's State Capitol Building on Wednesday to complain about record-company business practices and ask for legislation to free musicians from long-term contracts.

"At 12, I was thrilled to sign my record contract with Curb Records, and at that age I didn't understand everything that was in my contract," Rimes told state senators. "I just turned 19 last month, and if I record at a rate of one album every two years, which is the industry average, I will be 35 before the contract is over."

The hearing in Sacramento focused on a 14-year-old amendment that exempts recording artists from California labor laws meant to protect other entertainers.

The state's so-called seven-year statute prevents companies from binding an entertainer to a contract for more than seven years. But recording artists lost that protection in 1987, when record companies secured the right to sue them for undelivered albums after seven years.

"In 1987, [record companies] snuck in, and you guys got snookered," Love told lawmakers including Democratic state Senator Kevin Murray, a former music agent who recently founded the Senate's Select Committee on the Entertainment Industry. Murray organized a series of hearings to help him decide whether to try to repeal the amendment.

The Hole singer said touring requirements, coupled with the time it takes to write and record an album, make the standard record contract impossible to fulfill. "I don't care what the [industry] says to you today; they lied to you," she said. "I cannot make seven albums in seven years. They will not let me."

"Record companies can fire us, but we can't fire them, even if they fail to perform their duties," said Henley, the Eagles singer and drummer who last year co-founded the Recording Artists Coalition with Sheryl Crow to lobby for artists' rights (see "Don Henley's RIAA Alternative Gaining Steam").

Cary Sherman, senior vice president of the Recording Industry Association of America, which represents record companies, said labels take massive financial risks and endure the failure of 90 percent of their acts. He said the amendment provides needed protection for the labels, and the only artists affected by it are superstars.

Asked to comment specifically on Rimes' claims about her contract, Sherman said her situation appeared to be an anomaly. A spokesperson at Curb could not be reached for immediate comment.

The inquiry into record-industry customs comes in the wake of lawsuits against major labels by such artists as Love (see "Courtney Love Hits Speed Bump In Label Fight") and the Dixie Chicks (see "Dixie Chicks Claim Sony Robbed Them Of More Than $4 Million"). Dixie Chick Natalie Maines was at the hearing but did not testify.

R&B singer Patti Austin, artist manager Jim Guerinot, whose clients include No Doubt and the Offspring, and Michael Greene, CEO of the Recording Academy, also testified against the amendment.

Much of the discussion strayed from the core issue of the seven-year statute, partially because the lawmakers were grappling to understand how the music industry works. Love and Henley handed out books about the industry to senators so they could study up for the next hearing.

Love, sporting a new brown hairdo and a demure dark dress with a round white collar, began her testimony by claiming that music-industry reform could prove profitable for California.

"I've made more for Universal than 'Titanic,' " she claimed. "And are they even nice to me? No, they're rude!"

Congress is also planning to hold hearings into the recording business, according to the Los Angeles Times (see "Record Industry Scrutinized By California, Federal Officials").

A man formerly working as LeAnn Rimes' bodyguard and personal trainer has been indicted by a Los Angeles federal grand jury for allegedly attempting to extort $2 million from the singer, the Associated Press reports.

Robert Lavetta Iadevaia Jr., better known as Robert Lavetta, was reportedly fired by Rimes in June after she noticed personal pictures and videotapes were missing.

Rimes' affidavit against Lavetta claims he told one of her co-managers that he had taken photographs and tapes and that he threatened to sell them to tabloid publications if he was not paid. Lavetta's attorney allegedly sought "severance" pay for his client of $2 million.

Lavetta was released on $1,000 bond after pleading not guilty and will begin his trial on Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

In an earlier lawsuit filed by Rimes' father against the singer's company, Wilbur Rimes named Lavetta as a bad influence on his daughter and claimed that Lavetta was attempting to charge him $1,000 a day for bodyguard services back when the elder Rimes still managed LeAnn. Wilbur Rimes later discovered that his daughter was already secretly paying Lavetta thousands of dollars to act as her bodyguard, his suit says.

LeAnn Rimes is currently battling her father in court, claiming he and a former co-manager owe her at least $14 million. He's countersuing, seeking an unspecified amount of money owed him as producer of her records (see "LeAnn Rimes' Father Countersues Singer's Management Company").

In March, LeAnn Rimes' lawsuit seeking dissolution of her recording contract with Curb Records was denied. She had filed suit when she turned 18, claiming the contract her parents allowed her to sign with Curb when she was 12 should not be binding (see "LeAnn Rimes Sues Label In Attempt To End Contract").
