A diverse group of musicians joined a coalition on Tuesday asking that the Obama administration close down the terror suspect camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Taking issue with their music reportedly being blasted at ear-bleeding levels in an attempt to break uncooperative terror suspects, artists including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle and Billy Bragg announced their support for the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, according to The Associated Press.

As part of their effort, the National Security Archive in Washington is filing a Freedom of Information Act request in an effort to uncover classified records that detail the use of loud music as an interrogation device. A November 2008 report by the Senate Armed Services Committee makes several references to the use of loud music as an interrogation tool, including the case of a Mauritanian prisoner who was allegedly blasted with music, such as Drowning Pool's "Bodies," to "stress" him because he believed listening music was forbidden. Drowning Pool has not objected to the use of its music at Guantanamo Bay and other U.S. detention sites.

Among the songs reportedly played at high volumes near prisoners in the detention camp are death-metal band Deicide's "F--- Your God," Metallica's "Enter Sandman," the Meow Mix cat food jingle, music from "Sesame Street," Don McLean's "American Pie," Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A.," Nine Inch Nails' "March of the Pigs," Queen's "We Will Rock You," the "I Love You" song from the children's show "Barney," as well as tunes by R.E.M., Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Britney Spears, the Bee Gees, Marilyn Manson, and others.

A spokesperson for the Joint Task Force Guantanamo told the AP that loud music has not been used with detainees since the fall of 2003; the first batch of prisoners were sent to the facility in January 2002. President Obama signed an executive order on January 22, 2009, pledging to close the facility within a year, but the move has drawn criticism from some Republican members of Congress, and it is unclear if the timetable will be achieved. A CIA spokesperson said the music was used for security purposes, to block detainees from communicating with each other, for instance, not for "punitive purposes — and at levels far below a live rock band."

According to BBC News, in a statement announcing their participation in the coalition, R.E.M. said, "We have spent the past 30 years supporting causes related to peace and justice. To now learn that some of our friends' music may have been used as part of the torture tactics without their consent or knowledge is horrific. It's anti-American, period."

South By Southwest 2009 Preview: Bands, BBQ And Old Buddies

We give you a peek at what's due to go down at this year's SXSW in Austin, Texas.
By James Montgomery

South by Southwest is sort of like running a marathon, except you're drunk most of the time, and there's nothing but BBQ and tacos to eat, and have sun stroke, and you basically hear live music from the moment you wake up until the second you pass out. So, actually, it's not really like a marathon at all, except in duration (and probably perspiration).

Yes, it's that time of year again &#8212 SXSW is upon us. It's a magical week that comes around each March, when the city of Austin, Texas is overrun with hundreds of bands and thousands of hipsters in really tight pants, all braving the blazing Texas sun to catch can't-miss sets from much-buzzed blog acts, top-secret performances by some of the biggest names in music (there's a couple of doozies this year), and have a really gigantic, really debauched party.

At SXSW 2008, there were performances by mainstays like Paramore, N.E.R.D., R.E.M., and My Morning Jacket, star-making turns by Vampire Weekend, No Age, MGMT and Katy Perry, appearances by Perez Hilton and Rachael Ray, even a Britney Spears rumor (and, as luck would have it, we spoke to almost all of 'em). Rumor has it, there was also plenty of partying — though we don't really remember, to be honest.

This year, things are looking to be just as awesome. There are rumors (repeat: rumors) of performances by Metallica — under the relatively awesome Norse name of Volsung — on Friday and Kanye West on Saturday. We'll see the return of alt-rock greats Jane's Addiction — in all their original-lineup glory — and faerie queen Tori Amos. Big Boi, Rick Ross and Jadakiss are all scheduled to appear. There will be sets by the Silversun Pickups, Explosions in the Sky, Primal Scream, Devo, the Hold Steady, M. Ward and Peter Bjorn and John. Plus, indie heavyweights like the Thermals, the Decemberists (performing their new album, The Hazards Of Love, in its entirety) and Grizzly Bear, who will unveil tracks from their much-anticipated Vecktimest album at what promises to be a revelatory church show.

We know it's a lot to handle.

Of course, it wouldn't be SXSW if there weren't also a ton of up-and-comers grabbing headlines, too. From lo (perhaps even no)-fi noisemakers like San Diego's Wavves and Brooklyn's the Pains of Being Pure at Heart to NME-approved female electro-poppers Little Boots and Ladyhawke, there's no shortage of buzzed-up bands to catch in and around Austin this week. And that's not even mentioning bands like Passion Pit, Crystal Stilts, the Dirty Projectors and Marnie Stern — who's already given us an SXSW preview of her own. Throw in a strong hip-hop contingent — multiple sets by Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Kid Sister and B.o.B — and you can see why the whole "marathon" comparison is more than apt. There literally is not enough time in the day to see everything, but that doesn't mean you're not gonna try your hardest to do it.

And, of course, MTV News is going to be there too — checking out bands, staying up way too late, making terrible decisions and trying very hard to remain sane. We'll be bringing you up-to-the-minute updates on SXSW on MTVNews.com, the Newsroom blog. We'll have live video of shows, interviews with bands and even a BBQ story or three. In short, we're going to try and bring you everything you're missing at SXSW 2009. It's hard work, for sure. But we do it because we care.

MTV News will be all over the South by Southwest festival this week, with blogs, articles and video on all the gigs, the artists and the scene!

Once again Turkey Day is upon us, and it's time to take a moment to reflect on what we're thankful for. Of course, we at MTV are in the business of music, so it's only natural for us to examine all the musicians who made this year a memorable one. Since change was the mantra in this election year, we thought we'd highlight the artists who bent the rules and weren't afraid to be different.

Kanye West
Why We're Thankful: If there's anyone who stuck their neck out and did something different this year, it was Kanye West. His fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak, is brand-new, but we've already taken a liking to it because it's quite a bold statement. Instead of rapping, Kanye takes a complete left turn and tries his hand at singing — shocking for a hip-hop artist, but a point well taken.

Metallica
Why We're Thankful: The biggest metal band in the world came back with a vengeance, blowing us away with the thrash-metal masterpiece Death Magnetic. Producer Rick Rubin really brought out the best in Metallica, and the songs hearkened back to the days of Master of Puppets.

Death Cab for Cutie
Why We're Thankful: Ben Gibbard and company returned with their sixth album, Narrow Stairs, and challenged us with an eight-and-a-half-minute single, the absolutely gorgeous "I Will Possess Your Heart." Possess our heart? It did.

Britney Spears
Why We're Thankful: Britney finally did something right in 2008. After wallowing in pop purgatory the past couple of years, she won big at the VMAs and made a major comeback. "Womanizer," from her upcoming album Circus, was quite the catchy single — her best since "Toxic" — and its scorching video shows Brit at the top of her game. It's Britney, bitch, and she's back on track.

Will.I.Am
Why We're Thankful: Voters made history this year with the election of Barack Obama. Will was more than happy to provide the soundtrack, weaving Obama's victory speech after the New Hampshire primary into "Yes We Can," an anthem for those who dared to hope. The speech-set-to-music and the accompanying video reached millions, young and old, and spread Obama's message of change.

Lil Wayne
Why We're Thankful: Lil Wayne was once again the hardest-working man in hip-hop this year. It's no secret that the economy took a big hit in 2008, and everyone knows that the music industry isn't doing so hot either. But Weezy's Tha Carter III sold a whopping 1 million copies in its first week, proving that it's still possible to be a powerhouse in the age of album leaks and illegal downloading.

T.I.
Why We're Thankful: One of the most ubiquitous singles this year was T.I.'s "Live Your Life." Thank to Rihanna's yodeling hook, we couldn't get the song out of our heads, but that's OK. It was a cool song. But we're also thankful for the way the rapper turned his life around. After getting arrested on weapons charges last year, T.I. began carrying out his community-service sentence by speaking to kids and encouraging them to stay in school.

R.E.M.
Why We're Thankful: R.E.M. could've easily rested on their laurels and put out another boring album, but they didn't. Accelerate was not a return to form, but it was a return to quality. The album sounded urgent and of-the-moment, with political lyrics about the fragile state of the economy, corrupt politicians and wartime anxiety — a refreshing dose of straight talk.

Honorable mentions: Young Jeezy for "My President Is Black" and Nas for "Black President."

For Leona Lewis, 2008 has been a year of notable firsts.

The English pop star, who was discovered by "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, has been breaking sales and chart records since being imported to the U.S. In March, her track "Bleeding Love" became the first single by an English female vocalist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Kim Wilde's cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" did it back in 1987. Now she's earned the distinction of becoming the U.K.'s first female artist to open at #1 with her inaugural release.

Spirit, which was produced by Cowell and industry fat cat Clive Davis, is set to bow at #1 on next week's Billboard albums chart with a whopping 205,000 copies sold, according to the latest SoundScan data. It marks the biggest female-artist debut-album opening since Carrie Underwood's 2005 LP, Some Hearts, which generated first-week scans of 314,000-plus.

Lewis' Spirit was a certifiable lock for the chart's peak position, as she faced little — make that zero — competition in her pursuit of sales greatness. Next week's #2 album, George Strait's Troubadour, sold just 59,000 units, while country artist James Otto's Sunset Man opens at #3, selling only 57,600 copies. The 27th addition to the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation series follows at #4 with 47,000 sold, while R.E.M.'s Accelerate drops three spots to #5, selling a reported 46,300. Right behind the pride of Athens, Georgia, comes the soundtrack to "Alvin and the Chipmunks," which sold another 39,700 copies for a sixth-place finish.

Lewis' and Otto's LPs were among 16 newcomers impacting next week's Top 200. Ray J's latest, All I Feel, enters the chart at #7, scanning upwards of 38,000 units, and at #9, clocking sales of 33,600, it's P.O.D.'s new one, When Angels and Serpents Dance. Wedged between Ray J and P.O.D., we find Rick Ross' Trilla, which put up week-five sales of 34,200, and rounding things out at #10 with 27,600 sold, it's Danity Kane's Welcome to the Dollhouse.

Other new releases entering next week's chart include Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I--IV, which sold 25,800 copies to claim the #14 slot, and opening at #29 with 18,000 copies snatched up, it's Marié Digby's Unfold. Ashes Divide's Keep Telling Myself It's Alright follows at #36, scanning 15,800 copies, while Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! bows at #64 with 10,000 copies sold. The Breeders return to the chart at #98, selling 7,200 units of their latest, Mountain Battles, while Tapes 'n Tapes' Walk It Off sold to the tune of 5,900, which puts them at #116 on the chart.

Following her appearance with Chris Brown last week on "American Idol," last year's "Idol" champ, Jordin Sparks, enjoyed a much-needed sales bump. Her self-titled debut experienced a 27 percent increase in retail interest, closing out the week with 24,300 scans; the effort climbs 14 chart positions to #17.

When R.E.M. were recording their new album, frontman Michael Stipe decided that he wanted to call it Future Tense, a title that would've worked on at least two different levels.

For one, a lot of the songs he'd written for the record dealt with the ideals he'd clung to when he first formed R.E.M. back in 1980 &#8212 youthful optimism, the belief that music could bring people together &#8212 and the way those ideals translated into being a band in 2008, a time when everything feels fractious and chaotic and pretty much irrevocably broken. Speaking or thinking in the future tense ("We will overcome," "We must continue"), he reasoned, seemed rather naive.

On the other hand, he also found himself writing about the current state of our nation &#8212 about the mess in Iraq, the Katrina recovery &#8212 and about the legacy George W. Bush will leave behind when he exits the White House in January. Stipe foresaw a series of messes that could take decades to clean up. He foresaw the future. And it will be tense.

"There's an energy and an urgency to the record," said Stipe. "To me it references a memory of punk rock, and the spirit of that, and what we all came out of, and what inspired us to start a band. It's not specific to the late '70s or anything like that, it's more of an imagined memory of that energy and that urgency. Couple that with the fact that I'm a very sentimental person, but I'm not necessarily nostalgic. And how memories affect me now, and in the future, is something that I find really interesting. And it's something I try to explore and exploit in my contributions to this band."

Of course, they ended up calling the record Accelerate (perhaps the biggest sign that after all these years, R.E.M. still operate as a democracy, not a monarchy), a title that has as much to do with all of the above &#8212 we live in an accelerated culture, where fears blow by at breakneck speeds &#8212 as it does with the way R.E.M. chose to make the record: loose, raw and in just nine hectic weeks. And they did this on purpose, because they had to.

"We had a clear directive," Stipe said. "We were communicating on a level we have not communicated on in some time, and I think we were saving the band, each of us. We each felt like this record was that important, to us and the future of R.E.M. and the legacy we leave. On our last tour in 2005, we looked at how the songs off Around the Sun really worked great live, more so than they did on the record. And we kind of set forth with an idea of how to make this record that way. So we did it really fast, and really raw and in your face."

"When [drummer] Bill [Berry] left the band [in 1997], it was one of those things like, all of a sudden, everything you know is wrong," added bassist Mike Mills. "We didn't know what kind of band we were. All of our methods of making records didn't exist anymore. So we made records we wouldn't have been able to make if Bill were still in the band, for better or worse. And in doing so, we were able to find our equilibrium and find out what it means for R.E.M. to be a three-piece band. And finally, it took us to this place where we were able to say, 'OK, that was fun, but enough of that. It's time to make a really fast rock-and-roll record. We've got nine weeks, and that's all we've got. '"

And that crackling, "live" feel is readily apparent throughout Accelerate &#8212 all 32 minutes of it &#8212 from the punchy guitars and breathy vocals of lead single "Supernatural Superserious" to the breakneck chorus of "Horse to Water" (which the band dubbed "The Joan Jett Song" during recording sessions). There are moments that recall jangle the band had in its nascent period, and moments that sound like fiery, late-'90's "What's the Frequency Kenneth." And there are moments that sound like the Replacements. But if you ask the members of R.E.M., they'll tell you it sounds like nothing they've ever done before.

"I think it's a better record than we've made recently, but we've never made a record this way. We never made one that sounds like this," said guitarist Peter Buck. "Even going back to Murmur, we didn't go into the studio and cut it live, real fast. For a first record, Murmur is totally overdubbed."

"People tell me it sounds like a return to form, but I don't understand that," added Mills. "We wouldn't even know how to return to anything at this point. I can't imagine anything less interesting than going back and doing something you'd already done before. This is R.E.M. 2008, nothing more, nothing less."

And the '08 version of the band isn't afraid of ruffling a few feathers, either. A trio of songs on the new album &#8212 "Houston," "Until the Day Is Done" and "Mr. Richards" &#8212 address the failures of the Bush administration and mistrust in the American political system as a whole. It seems that even after nearly 30 years, Stipe is still having no problem coming up with topics to sing about (or sacred cows to skewer).

"In the 28 years of writing songs, there are very few that are autobiographic. On this record, the only real part of me is in the song 'Until the Day Is Done,' which is looking at the mess the current administration had left this country with, and wondering how long it will take to dig ourselves out of it," Stipe added. "And then there's a song like 'Mr. Richards,' which, to be honest, you can pretty much pick any senior administration official of the current administration, and put them in the place of 'Mr. Richards.' He's one of those politicians that you really want to see behind bars."

Despite all the tension that went into making Accelerate, R.E.M. claim that they feel better (and closer) than they have in years. And because of that, they find themselves in a position most bands of their stature &#8212 and tenure &#8212 don't these days: promoting a record that's every bit as good as everything they've done in the past, which, given their back catalog, is a pretty impressive feat.

"I'm just totally thrilled by the fact that we got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame last year, and we had this record just sitting there ready to come out of us," Mills said. "So it's exciting to know that you can be recognized for a body of work, and to be able to come out with something that's just as good as anything you've done in the past. That's phenomenally thrilling to me."

Accelerate, due April 1, is the band's 15th album.

AUSTIN, Texas — If you somehow managed to make it all the way down to the Convention Center, wait in line to get your badge, wade through the crowds on Sixth Street, stand outside a tiny bar (or promotional space) for an hour to squeeze into a showcase that was "at capacity," down some gristly BBQ, scam a couple free beers and not die of heat exhaustion, then you still wouldn't have been able to catch the biggest show of Wednesday at South by Southwest.

Because that show actually happened on Thursday.

Well, now we're splitting hairs. R.E.M. actually took the stage at Stubb's, Austin's landmark BBQ shack/ rock space, at 12:20 a.m., making Wednesday's most-anticipated, most-attended gig actually a great kick-off to Thursday's rock action.

And from minute one, Athens' premiere elder statesmen knew all eyes were squarely on them. Frontman Michael Stipe strode to the mic, rose his arms, Messiah-like, and greeted the masses ("Children of South by Southwest," he laughed, "come to me!") before the band launched into "Living Well's the Best Revenge," the lead track off their upcoming Accelerate album (the promotion of which was, in theory, the reason they were playing SXSW).

"We're going to play a lot of new songs tonight," Stipe smiled. "Luckily, they're under two minutes. So if you don't like it, you can go take a pee."

But no one moved. And they were rewarded with a one-two punch of vintage R.E.M.: "Second Guessing" (from their sophomore album, '84's Reckoning) and "Drive," the lead track on '92's Automatic for the People. Camera phones were held aloft, Stipe's oft-inscrutable lyrics were shouted back at him, and everyone basically behaved unlike a SXSW audience is supposed to — they were acting like fans attending a once-in-a-blue-moon show by a truly legendary rock band. Equal parts flaunting of the new album and joyous, intense workings of older classics, the gig — and R.E.M. themselves — was solid, tight and really quite stunning.

"Well, this is Stubb's Bar-B-Q, and I've never been here before," Stipe said at one point. "It's a great pleasure."

And you get the feeling he meant it.

Other Highlights of a Wild Wednesday in Austin, From Our Intrepid (and Tired) MTV News Team

John Norris:

White Williams. I got to know these synth-pop guys from Ohio-via-Brooklyn a couple of months back and was psyched to run into them in our hotel this morning. They seemed quite excited as well (and they'd better be) to be playing shows at SXSW '08. Unfortunately, their first was a tough one. At the Peacock, an all-blue lounge/ party space well east of Sixth Street, White Williams — now a four-piece with the recent addition of a live drummer — were wedged onto a stage that was maybe 30 square feet, with a guitar player, Hayes Shanesy, who was so sick that he spent the night before at a Dallas hospital. Suffice it to say, they'd all had better days. Still, they soldiered on with a too-brief set that had a newfound edge, thanks to the ol' drum kit, which rendered synth-pop songs into (nearly) rock.

Lightspeed Champion frontman Dev Hynes is a native Texan-turned-Brit who used to be in an art-punk group (the Test Icicles), but, with the help of Bright Eyes' Mike Mogis, has just released a beautiful country-tinged pop album called Falling Off the Lavender Bridge. They turned in a terrific acoustic set Wednesday at Antone's. Earlier in the night Dev told me that Lightspeed may indeed be the "champion" of this year's SXSW — he is playing no less than 14 shows here this week! "I was told that Black Lips played 12 shows last year," he said (sounds about right), "but I guess we got 'em beat."

Out at La Zona Rosa — a big barn of a club that held the "Free Yr Radio" party — the crowds were small (thanks, R.E.M.) but the lineup was huge with talent, including the fantastically fuzzed out Times New Viking and Brooklyn indie giants Yeasayer, both of whom deserved — and usually get — more attention.

James Montgomery:

Forget R.E.M. and Times New Viking. The best band on display Wednesday night at SXSW was undoubtedly the Plastic Constellations, Minneapolis' premiere purveyors of fist-pumping, buddy-hugging, six-pack chugging, adrenaline-surging rock. And, yeah, I know I've wasted a bunch of virtual ink on these guys already, but they're going on indefinite hiatus after the release of next month's We Appreciate You album. That — coupled with the sheer lack of recognition they receive — makes me a tad bit wistful. And their gig at the Mohawk — which doubled as a label showcase and a farewell show — made me even more teary-eyed (though that could've just been caused by all the beer being tossed into the air) amid the flailing guitars, karate kicks and super-good times. So, basically, it ruled like every other gig TPC have played over their decade-plus together. It's a shame you never got to see them.

At the same showcase (sorry, I didn't mention it earlier, but it was for Frenchkiss Records, which is a totally great label), I also really enjoyed Call Me Lightning and Tejas' own Fatal Flying Guilloteens, both of whom played music that sounds exactly like their names — hard, fast and dangerous (though the 'Teens also added a large degree of blood, sweat and honest-to-goodness, seizure-inducing, strobe-aided terror). Both were awesome and made you want to fight someone.

Other highlights: YACHT (Gil's got more on them in a second) and Does It Offend You, Yeah? at the Levi's/Fader Fort, getting to hear three songs from the Cab's upcoming Whisper War album (while sitting on their tour bus, no less) and running into actor/musician Lukas Haas on the street outside Stubb's. Apparently he's playing a show here Thursday.

Gil Kaufman:

South by Southwest is best when it's like one of those sampler platters at a Chinese restaurant, the kind where you don't necessarily know what everything is, but it doesn't really matter, because even the stuff that doesn't taste that great is still pretty interesting. Which explains a day that began with Los Angeles' Foreign Born — who, though together twice as long as Vampire Weekend, still kind of reminded us of that buzztastic New York combo — and ended with Nashville's spazzy surf-punkers Be Your Own Pet.

In between, I was treated to the anarcho digital terror of YACHT, whose singer/rapper, Jona Bechtolt, jumped into the audience at Emo's to bounce along with the hyped-up crowd and ended the show by repeating the "thank you" on his prerecorded digital track. And though John covered London's Lightspeed Champion above, I primarily want to give props to him for managing to work a shout-out to Elijah Wood into his set.

Speaking of celebrities, Austin's great for rubbernecking. Hey, there's former neon-dreadlocked 'NSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick, wobbling his way down the street, hoping to see anything good, including a band we've never heard of called I Laid Your Mom (we think he made that one up). And there's Cisco Adler, roving with an eight-person crew and hoping someone notices him. And though the woman working the door at Stubb's didn't recognize them, we saw Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and former Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell ducking in to see R.E.M. at midnight.

And despite all that, uh, star power, perhaps the best moment of the night came just before the hyper set from Nashville's Be Your Own Pet, when a suave gentleman up front was trying to chat up a few young ladies and asked them if they were going to see Vampire Weekend. "What's Vampire Weekend?" squeaked one of the girls, proving she may be the only non-blogger here, as well as one of the only people not trying to get into the VW show. All hype was forgotten, however, when Pet took the stage and lead singer Jemina Pearl — wearing yellow tights under a microscopic black miniskirt and a gray sleeveless T-shirt — proceeded to bounce around the stage like tattooed pinball, rolling on the ground and smashing into her bandmates as they chopped out double time surf-punk tunes from their upcoming second album, Get Awkward.

We're all over the bands, BBQ and hipster parties at SXSW '08. Check out the MTV Newsroom Blog and You R Here for more.

In a news release on the suit, Victory also claimed that Virgin/EMI paid $55,000 to the band, which used the money to fund the initial phase of a 2006 lawsuit against Victory, and helped the bandmembers search for a music-industry lawyer to help them with their legal action. U-God (born Lamont Hawkins) reportedly filed papers in a New York district court, alleging that Wu Music owes him money for services rendered dating back to March of last year. Wu Music is licensed to Universal Music. ...

Paula Abdul doesn't just have the seventh season of "American Idol" on her mind these days. "I want kids!" the singer recently told Ladies' Home Journal for its February issue. "If it doesn't happen naturally, I can always adopt." The 45-year-old Abdul opened up even more about her personal life, saying of 32-year-old boyfriend J.T. Torregiani, "I've experienced real loneliness, so I love knowing there's someone I can share the good and the not-so-good with." ... Everyone's wondering how the seventh season of "Idol" is going to fare in light of some retooling and the writers' strike, but if you ask Chris Daughtry, the show is "in a state of decline." The Daughtry frontman recently spoke with RollingStone.com about the show, adding that if it doesn't right itself, "it's probably not gonna last too much longer. I'm sure that'll be used against me, but that's the truth, you know?" He also said the show is "definitely lacking some credibility at this point." ...

White Stripes, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Mark Ronson, Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Cheifs and recent MTV Artist of the Week Kate Nash have all landed Brit Award nominations, although Leona Lewis, Mika and Take That have scored the most, with four apiece. Rihanna, Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs, Kylie Minogue and Paul McCartney are slated to perform at the February 20 ceremony. ... R.E.M. have pulled the curtains back on a new Web site surrounding the April 1 release of their 14th studio album, Accelerate. Their NinetyNights.com Web site has daily high-definition-video snippets shot by Arcade Fire collaborator Vincent Moon ...

Björk attacked a newspaper photographer who was attempting to take her picture at the Auckland International Airport on Sunday, according to reports in the New Zealand press. The singer, who was flying in to perform at the Big Day Out concert on Friday, reportedly ripped New Zealand Herald photographer Glenn Jeffrey's shirt after he snapped a photo of her. Jeffrey told the New Zealand Press Association that he was warned by a man traveling with Björk not to take her picture, and once he did, the singer came up behind him, grabbed the back of his shirt and tore it before tumbling to the ground. In 1996, Björk attacked a reporter in an airport in Bangkok, Thailand, after she objected to being photographed. ... The Walkmen and White Rabbits will hop along the U.S. this month for nine shows. On the itinerary are Pittsburgh (Wednesday); Detroit (Thursday); Milwaukee (Friday); Madison, Wisconsin (Saturday); Chicago (Sunday); St. Louis (January 21); Columbus, Ohio (January 22); Philadelphia (January 23); and Baltimore (January 24). ...

For the first time in 25 years, former Clash members Mick Jones and Topper Headon reportedly shared the same stage at a gig by Jones' new band, Carbon/Silicon. The duo performed "Train in Vain" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" during the set. ... Megadeth have recruited Chris Broderick (Nevermore, Jag Panzer) to be their newest guitarist, following the recent departure of Glen Drover. Broderick will make his live debut with the band on February 4, at a gig in Finland. ...

Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali said the band will not be revived following the late November death of frontman Kevin DuBrow. In an online statement, Banali claims he had been "approached to see if I would be interested in contacting Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo and to audition singers for Quiet Riot." He said that he's even fielded an offer to re-form "the version of Quiet Riot that included Paul Shortino, Carlos Cavazo and Sean McNabb." But Banali rejected any suggestions of the band performing live. "My friendship, love and respect for Kevin DuBrow, as well as my personal love and affection for Kevin's mother and his family, makes it inconceivable for me to ever entertain any ovation to re-form or to continue Quiet Riot," he wrote. "It would also be a disrespect to the fans who have supported [the band] for nearly 25 years." ...

Roger Avary, the Oscar-winning co-writer of "Pulp Fiction," was arrested on Sunday after a fatal single-car crash in Ojai, California. According to a Reuters report, Avary, 42, was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, and was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail. Andreas Zedini, a 34-year-old passenger in the car, died of his injuries at a local hospital. Avary's wife, Gretchen, 40, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries after being thrown from the car.
