Last week, the Internet lost its collective mind when "These Are My Twisted Words" — five and half minutes of spirally guitars and doomy vibes that was rumored to be a brand-new Radiohead song — hit the Net.

First appearing on torrent site What.cd, then going massive on the message board of Radiohead fan site AtEaseWeb.net, "Twisted Words" quickly became the subject of much scrutiny from the bulk of the music-obsessed world, with mega-passionate R'head fans pointing to the MP3's file name ("01-radiohead-these_are_my_twisted_words-(advance)-2009-woi.mp3") and accompanied ASCII text file (which, written in ampersands, featured the words "Wall of Ice" and the date "2009-08-17") as proof that the song was leaked by the band to promote a new album called Wall of Ice — after a popular anti-RIAA cartoon — and that it would be released on Monday, August 17.

And given recent interviews with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke in The Believer and guitarist Jonny Greenwood in The Australian, which hinted that the band is finished releasing traditional long-play albums — fans speculated that Wall of Ice was going to be an EP, released in much the same way their In Rainbows album was in late 2007.

The media did their part to hype the supposed release too. Many reported that WallOfIce.com took visitors directly to Radiohead's online store. Others (OK, us) speculated that "Words" was actually the long-rumored song Yorke wrote for the "New Moon" soundtrack, even analyzing the lyrics to back this hypothesis.

And as for Radiohead? Well, they didn't say anything. Until Monday, that is, when they officially made "Words" available for free download on their official site.

In a statement posted along with links to the MP3, Greenwood shot down the rumors that the song was part of some elaborate EP scheme, saying that the band had the completed version of the song that had been lying around for a while, and they decided to release it, since they'll be playing it on a brief UK/European tour later this month.

"So here's a new song, called 'These Are My Twisted Words.' We've been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We're pretty proud of it," Greenwood wrote. "There's other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we've been practicing, and which we'll probably play at this summer's concerts. Hope you like it."

The "Twisted Words" download comes with a PDF artwork file (lots of tendril-like tree branches) made by Yorke and longtime Radiohead collaborator Stanley Donwood. It also includes instructions from the band: "We suggest you print these images out on tracing paper ... use at least 80 gsm tracing paper or your printer will eat it, as we discovered. You could put them in an order that pleases you."

But is "Words" a one-time deal? Will Radiohead continue to release MP3s through their site? Or perhaps maybe an EP? Well, it turns out that your guess is as good as ours. When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Radiohead told MTV News that he "can't comment on that, as no one really knows as yet."

We already told you that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz said Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was interested in contributing a song to the movie, due in theaters November 20.

And while Yorke's people wouldn't confirm the potentially mind-blowing collabo, Weitz revealed on Thursday that he's got the track in hand and can't wait to listen. Speaking to the entertainment Web site HitFix.com amid the Comic-Con madness, Weitz said that he has not only secured a new song from the Radiohead mastermind, but also one from freak-folkie Bon Iver.

"I selfishly want to put songs in by artists I love. And some the cast and crew also happen to love," Weitz said. "I think [Bon Iver] is fantastic. He says he wrote it for the film, but who ever knows if it might just be something laying around in his cupboard." Weitz said he'll be listening to the Yorke track Friday (July 24) and said that "unless it's sounds of him belching, I think I'll put it in." Spokespeople for Yorke and Bon Iver could not be reached for comment at press time.

Weitz also said he's planning to include a track from the British trio Band of Skulls and once again mentioned that he'd like to get a Kings of Leon song for the soundtrack to the "Twilight" sequel. The "Twilight" soundtrack has sold more than 2.1 million copies to date.

Now, a month after the incident, Jamie Foxx is commenting on what the 16-year-old said about the band. On his Sirius radio show, "The Foxxhole," on Sunday night, after a listener called in to talk about the incident, Foxx went on a curse-filled tirade after semi-sarcastically posing the question "Who is Miley Cyrus?" Perez Hilton reports. He then went on to describe her as the girl "with all the gums" and wondered if she was the one with the gum transplant.

He continued, "She's going to ruin Radiohead's career? The same Radiohead that gets paid a million dollars just to sample their song? That Radiohead?" A bunch of his guests on the show were also getting into the act, laughing at Foxx's comments and name-calling the Disney star. The group also called Cyrus a "little white b----."

Foxx then went on to compare Cyrus to other former teen queens, saying that Cyrus should do drugs like Britney Spears, become a lesbian like Lindsay Lohan, make a sex tape and "grow up." Cyrus is known to ride around her neighborhood on a bicycle, and Foxx also suggested that she "catch Chlamydia on a bicycle seat."

A week after Miley Cyrus shared with the world her plans to "ruin" Radiohead after they snubbed the young starlet at the Grammy Awards, the band has responded to the singer's threat.

Last week, Miley went on the radio and shared an anecdote about how excited she was about finally having the chance to meet Radiohead at the Grammys — only to be told the guys "don't really do that." So, she said, "I left, 'cause I was so upset. I wasn't going to watch [them perform]. Stinkin' Radiohead! I'm gonna ruin them. I'm going to tell everyone."

A rep for the band commented to Us Weekly, "When Miley grows up, she'll learn not to have such a sense of entitlement."

The Miley beef is just one of a few feuds the rockers find themselves in these days. Kanye West also has a bone to pick with the band. During his "VH1 Storytellers" taping, West told the audience he, too, was snubbed by the British band at the Grammys. He was so mad that when Radiohead performed, "I sat the f--- down."

So, much in Kanye's style, the guys addressed the beef rumors on their Web site, Dead Air Space. "Wish us all a safe journey," Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke blogged. "If you still like us and you're not one of those people I have managed to offend by doing nothing, xx."

Miley Cyrus can probably meet anyone she wants to these days. She has a hit TV show, a few hit movies under her belt, and she is the face of the Disney Teen Queen generation.

But there is one group of guys that aren't having any of it: Despite Miley's best efforts last month at the Grammy Awards to get some face time with Radiohead, she failed miserably.

"I'm like, these are the people I really want to meet," Miley said on the Johnjay and Rich morning radio show on Tuesday. "I'd freak out. They're my rock gods. These are the only people I would cry over."

The 16-year-old pop star tried to use her people to make it happen when they were all at the February 8 awards show. "[I told my manager], 'Pull as many strings.' My manger asked and said, 'Miley's really obsessed.' And they were like, 'We don't really do that.' "

Her disappointment was especially hard because "they're the reason I love music," she said. "Just to say you don't really do that — it's not like I was going to bring my crew. I had already texted all my friends that my life will be complete [if I got to meet them].

"We were all freaking out," she recalled, saying their snub was "obnoxious." "This is someone I would cry over."

Devastated, Cyrus didn't even stick around to see Thom Yorke and crew perform during the show. "I left 'cause I was so upset. I wasn't going to watch. Stinkin' Radiohead!" she said. "I'm gonna ruin them, I'm going to tell everyone."

Not all of Miley's celebrity encounters have been bad. "Fergie was the coolest," she said, adding that she was equally impressed by encounters with Paul McCartney, Chris Martin and the Kings of Leon.

The Recording Academy gives out Grammy Awards for great music, not great ideas. But it's impossible to think about Album of the Year nominee Radiohead's In Rainbows without talking about not just what was on it, but how that music made its way into the world.

Just like the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band broke the mold 40 years ago by exploding the boundaries of what popular music could encompass, Radiohead shattered expectations with their seventh album by advancing the radical notion that some fans will gladly pay for music they've already gotten for free.

The English group has blazed a singular path for more than a decade by making albums that challenge, entertain and confound even as they melt in more and more experimental sounds and textures on top of singer Thom Yorke's frequently claustrophobic, inscrutable lyrics. But, working again with longtime collaborator/producer Nigel Godrich, Radiohead toiled for more than two years on the songs that would make up In Rainbows, often expressing the frustration of the deliberate process on their Dead Air Space blog, but giving few clues as to what sounds they were cooking up or when they would unleash them.

Free from their album deal with EMI, the group had the luxury of time — but that soon turned into a creative noose as sessions stagnated and Radiohead took to the road in the summer of 2006 to air the music out in small theaters and at big festivals like Bonnaroo.

By the fall of 2006, they were back on the horse and, in early 2007, it seemed as if they were finally rounding the corner. And then a long silence was followed by the 18 words that changed the game, perhaps forever: "Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days," guitarist Jonny Greenwood announced on Dead Air Space on October 1, 2007. "We've called it In Rainbows." Ten days?

Rather than wait around as their album was inevitably leaked, Radiohead rushed it out onto the Internet 10 days later, as promised, and, in what the New York Times called the "most audacious experiment in years," they offered the 10 tracks DRM-free with just a tiny transaction fee and a name-your-own-price scale. Numbers were hard to come by, but the experiment appeared to be a fantastic success, as Radiohead's brash move remained headline news well past the day they released the physical version two months later.

By most accounts, the experiment worked financially as well, resulting in the band's best sales figures in years — and reportedly hefty profits — when the box set and CD version were later released.

Those two years of angst resulted in some of the most enticing songs the group had produced in years, from the ethereal warm electronic blanket of "House of Cards" to the slow-pulse, fuzzed bass trip-hop of "All I Need," the pastoral acoustic scramble of "Faust Arp" and the chilly, twisty jazz of "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi." Even amid the sometimes ominous-sounding tracks, there is a warmth in the spare music and (slightly) more approachable vulnerability in singer Yorke's spooky falsetto that gave In Rainbows an ever-so-thin bridge back from the rock/electronic hinterlands the group had been perched on since their landmark 1997 album, OK Computer.

In an October 2007 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, guitarist Greenwood said the band partly released In Rainbows the way they did to "get it out quickly, so everyone would hear it at the same time, and partly because it was an experiment that felt worth trying, really." As for the variable pricing, he said it was a "fun" experiment to make fans stop for a moment to ponder what music is really worth.

As for the music itself, Greenwood said the idea was to get back to the more studied experimentation on the band's fourth album, 2000's Kid A. "In that we were spending longer experimenting and trying stuff out — it wasn't so much of a performance-based thing, like Hail to the Thief," he said. "Other than that, it's the usual thing of turning up with these songs and the pressure is, 'Don't f--- it up, don't record them badly, don't do bad arrangements of them, and do them justice.' "

Those efforts were rewarded with the group's third Album of the Year nomination, as well as a pair for "House of Cards" and four other nominations related to the album. But, despite the group's career-long march to keep evolving their sound, not everyone is counting on them to win big Sunday night. "I think if it turns out to be an unimaginative year, Radiohead will do really well," said New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica. "It's a totally fine album. You might have some industry people resenting them for their unconventional distribution method — then you might have some who are more progressive, who want to support that. But generally speaking, a vote for Radiohead, right now, is a vote for the status quo. It's not 1995 — like, Radiohead is very much a part of the firmament. You might as well be voting for R.E.M."

Whether or not he was impressed with the album, Caramanica couldn't deny that he became part of the now-legendary story it told. "I did not buy that record," he said. "I have that record, but I did not buy that record."

So, as always, Radiohead did it their way, surrendering not an inch to the pressures of a floundering music industry and tossing a puzzling wrench into the works with a brave experiment that just might light the path to music's future.

The Grammy Awards vowed several years ago to try to update the image of the annual music-industry awards buffet. And while the Recording Academy has made great strides in spicing up the show with more contemporary artists and performances, 2009 is shaping up to be the year that the Grammys go all-in.

On Monday (January 26), it was announced that Radiohead, up for five Grammys, including Album of the Year for In Rainbows, would perform on the February 8 show. Also joining a performance roster that already includes Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Carrie Underwood, the Jonas Brothers, Jennifer Hudson and Kenny Chesney is former Beatle Paul McCartney, who will be joined by a special guest drummer, Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl.

The icing on the cake is a pair of hip-hop performances: one featuring T.I. and Justin Timberlake, and another of the hit "Swagga Like Us" with Jay-Z, Wayne, T.I. and Kanye West.

The Grammy spot will be Radiohead's first live television performance in the U.S. since 2000, and their first time ever playing the awards show. It comes as normally publicity-shy singer Thom Yorke has begun appearing in a splashy ad campaign promoting the broadcast; Wayne and Rihanna have also been drafted as part of the ad blitz to drum up excitement for the show, the Los Angeles Times reports.

With the addition of Radiohead, the list of Album of the Year performers now includes three nominees (Wayne and Coldplay are the others), with the only names missing so far being Ne-Yo, nominated for Year of the Gentleman, and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, who are being honored for their bluegrass collaboration, Raising Sand.

More performers and a list of presenters are expected to be announced soon.

Jaydiohead DJ Says He'd Love Feedback From Jay-Z Or Radiohead

'I would be speechless if I heard from any of them,' Minty Fresh Beats tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

DJ Minty Fresh Beats as a toddler
Photo: Max Tannone

Last week, Max Tannone was a 22-year-old employee of an NYC post-production company who dabbled in making beats. Then he combined the powers of Jay-Z and Radiohead on his MySpace page. And suddenly, things changed.

Overnight, Tannone became Minty Fresh Beats, creator of the Net's most-buzzed-about album (aside from, you know, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion), a 38-minute mash-up of tracks from Jay and Radiohead that he dubbed Jaydiohead. The album — which he made available for download at Jaydiohead.com — quickly made the rounds on message boards and music blogs, earning praise (and a few mean-spirited jabs too) and making Tannone a minor celebrity in the process. All of which he finds rather surreal.

"Ever since I was 16, I've been making beats and remixing different a cappellas and instrumentals into original songs, but I was just doing that for fun," Tannone told MTV News on Tuesday (January 6). "I always just sort of used the name 'Minty Fresh Beats,' even though it doesn't really mean anything. About a year ago, I did an early mix of Jay-Z's 'Pray' with Radiohead's 'I Might Be Wrong,' and I just put it up on my MySpace page, and it just sat there. But I always thought it would be a fun project to do a whole Jay/Radiohead album."

So in August of last year, Tannone began working on what would become the Jaydiohead album — "I was like, 'F--- it, it's something for me to do. Either watch TV or work on the album,' " he laughed) — and when he finished, he decided to post a link to it on his MySpace page. He insists the goal was never to get famous, but "just to have people like it."

"I didn't want people to see it as a promotional vehicle, like, 'Oh, here's my résumé!' or something like that, but if they liked what they heard, and it led to more [music] production work, then I was all for it," he explained. "I knew the idea of a mash-up has been done to death, but I wanted to restructure these songs, to give them new choruses and make them sound like new songs. Plus, I think a lot of songs off Jay's American Gangster album are amazing, and I feel like it was kind of slept-on, so I wanted to give it some shine."

And though Tannone claims he has no idea how many times Jaydiohead has been downloaded through his site (he doesn't host it, or something to that effect), he said that a quick Google search turned up Russian, Spanish and French music blogs writing about the album. Now all that's left is for one of his subjects — either Jay or the guys in Radiohead — to reach out to him, and he said that his impromptu musical career will be complete.

"I would be speechless if I heard from any of them," Tannone laughed. "If any of those guys even listened to it and said they didn't hate it, that would be cool with me. But they probably have way better things to do with their time. The fact that it got that close to either of those guys is amazing enough for me."

Perhaps Jay-Z should think about starting a new "mash-ups" wing over at Jigga Inc. Once again, he's an unwitting participant in an Internet mix, this time being paired with Radiohead on an album called — you guessed it — Jaydiohead.

It's the handiwork of NYC DJ Minty Fresh Beats, and it's currently streaming (and available for download) over at Jaydiohead.com. Pairing songs from Jay's Black Album and American Gangster with tunes from a host of Radiohead albums (OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows), the album includes songs like "99 Anthems," "Dirt Off Your Android" and "Lucifer's Jigsaw."

(Over in the Newsroom, check out the Jay mash-ups we never want to hear.)

Minty Fresh (who, he'd like you to know, is "available for albums, demos, mixtapes, mixing or mastering") premiered the Jaydiohead mash on his MySpace page on December 30, and in the days since, it's quickly spread across file-sharing sites and message boards. Reaction from fans of both Jay and Radiohead has been overwhelmingly positive, with some at 'Head fan site AtEaseWeb.com even going so far as to design covers for the album.

Of course, Jay mash-ups are nothing new. Danger Mouse took Jay's lyrics and paired them with music from the Beatles' White Album, creating the so-called Grey Album that would become an online sensation (and earn the ire of the EMI Music legal team). In subsequent years, Black Album a cappella tracks would also be mashed with a variety of other artists, including Weezer, Pavement, Prince and Metallica.

Just last year, in the wake of the feud between Jay and Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher, a trio of Spanish producers released the OJayZis: Jay-Z vs. Oasis mixtape. Oh, and then there was Viva la Hova, a mash of Jay and songs from Coldplay's Viva la Vida.

There was no threat of legal action over either of those projects, and it appears that Jaydiohead might be in the clear too. As of press time, neither Jay-Z's nor Radiohead's publicists had responded to MTV News' request for comment on the album.

The only thing more fun than watching Mariah Carey wail "Please Come Home for Christmas" during last night's Grammy Nomination Special/ Concert/ Self-Congratulatory Hoedown was realizing that, just like Kanye West at last year's awards, this year's top vote getter, Lil Wayne, is probably going to be trumped by an old guy. This year's Grammy heritage pick is once again (not) singer Robert Plant, who picked up nods in all three big categories for his justifiably honored collaboration with Grammy crush Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Practice that "it's cool to be nominated" smile, Weezy, because Album of the Year is probably not your game to win this year. And Adele, they may love your Mercury Prize-nominated white-girl-singing-the-blues thing in England, and good on you for snagging a Record of the Year nom for "Chasing Pavements" (I dare anyone to hum a few bars), but Plant and Krauss are probably going to snag that one too. But we have to give the Grammy voters (at least the ones who let their Web-savvy 13-year-old daughters cast their ballots for them) props for including M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" in the category, surely the only song in Grammy history to feature gunshots, a cash register and a Clash sample as part of the chorus, not to mention lyrics about "weed and bongs."

And for those reasons alone, Ms. Arulpragasam probably isn't going to be hoisting any Golden Gramophones over her head on February 9, either. Even though the Recording Academy likes to put up a "forward-thinking" front (check those Radiohead nods), when it gets down to it, they generally vote like the industry vets they are. But enough about who's not going to win on Grammy night — here's a look at who we think will.

Album of the Year: Just in case we weren't clear, Academy voters like to play it safe when it comes to handing out hardware — and that means rewarding the "legend" for a job relatively well done (just like Herbie Hancock at last year's ceremony). Sorry, Radiohead, Weezy and Ne-Yo, this one goes to Plant and Krauss' Sand. Or, in a pinch, perhaps Coldplay's Viva la Vida, because they're one of the biggest, most successful rock acts on the planet (and sort of milquetoast, which also appeals to voters).

Record of the Year: Again, we're thinking Plant and Krauss, though it would be relatively amazing if M.I.A. won, took the stage hugely pregnant, raised her Grammy in the air and began spouting revolutionary slogans about the Tamil Tigers and a "Third World democracy." Academy President Neil Portnow's beard would probably spontaneously combust.

Song of the Year: It would be awesome if Estelle's effervescent "American Boy" won here, but these are Grammy voters we're talking about, so think radio-friendly. Which means ... congrats, Coldplay, your "Viva la Vida" is the song of the year! (You could also substitute "Jason Mraz" and "I'm Yours" or "Sara Bareilles" and "Love Song," and it would have much the same impact).

Best New Artist: Lady Antebellum? Yeah, we said the same thing about the Nashville trio who apparently wrote a song that appeared on "The Hills." And Jazmine Sullivan — cool album, but really? Of course, the Jonas Brothers were more than happy to fill the honorary they've-released-two-albums-already-but-are-still-considered-"new" slot this year. But it is entirely possible that Duffy and Adele will share this award, because no one would be able to tell the difference between the two.

Best Rap Solo Performance: In a category of heavyweights (and Lupe Fiasco), we're gonna go with Wayne's "A Milli," if only because voters might feel a twinge of remorse for shutting him out everywhere else. Two relatively amazing other possibilities: Snoop Dogg's "Sexual Eruption" wins, and he accepts the award with dripping Jheri curls and a keytar slung around his neck. Or Nas wins, and someone has to awkwardly read out the title of his song, you know ... the one called "N.-.-.-.e.r (The Slave and the Master)."

Best Rap Song: Another big-name category (Weezy! T.I.! Jay! Kanye! Snoop!), which means that the one lesser name — Lupe again — will probably win here. Common sense does not apply to the Grammys (though Common often does).

Best Rap Album: Academy voters sure love Lupe Fiasco, whose The Cool snagged another nom here (too bad voters don't also buy albums). Wayne's Tha Carter III should be the favorite here, because it's the year's biggest-selling hip-hop album, but don't count out Jay-Z's American Gangster, which came out so long ago that voters might have forgotten that it was relatively underwhelming.

Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals: No offense to Coldplay, but compared to AC/DC and Kings of Leon, "Violet Hill" is about as rocking as a preschool play-date. Speaking of KOL, there's another song that will give Portnow a coronary if it wins, thanks to lyrics about, well, let's just say doing something to someone who's driving.

Best Rock Album: Somehow, despite having one of the year's hugest songs — rock or otherwise — Kid Rock landed only two Grammy noms, one for Rock Album and one for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (where he's up against acts like Ne-Yo, James Taylor and Paul McCartney, whose "That Was Me" has a title that sounds like someone copping to a bit of flatulence). That would make Rock the favorite here, except, ooh! Coldplay are nominated! Never mind.

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: You would think, given the success of Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," that she'd be the lock here, but considering that she was shut out of the big four categories, she doesn't look like that safe of a bet. So, let's say Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" here. Or maybe Adele's "Chasing Pavements." Or Duffy's "Mercy." You know, whichever.

Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals: Al Green and Jennifer Hudson are nominated here, so ... Hey! Wait! Boyz II Men got a nom! Welcome back, fellas, you win in a landslide.

So what do you think? Let us know below!
