It's been three long years since we've heard anything new from Meshuggah, but on March 11, the Swedish experimental-metallers return with what's maybe the first metal album of 2008 that deserves a solid listen. The follow-up to 2005's Catch Thirty-Three, obZen is the product of a year's worth of writing and marks something of a regression for the band, according to guitarist Mårten Hagström.

"We had this vision to make a dense album that was going back to the old songwriting structure we'd been using, where it'd have songs that were linked to each other by a common thread but still had a different identity," he explained. "Now, listening back to the album, that's something I think is the best part of the album, that we pulled that off and managed to get the diversity in there — if you can call what we're doing 'diverse,' with the kind of aggression that's involved. But we aimed to make an album that had that severe, aggressive quality to it. We wanted to get back to the sheer intensity of what we do, but really, it was all a semiconscious thing for us.

"I think this album's a little more direct than the previous ones," he continued. "It's more back to the in-your-face brutality of our older records and has a lot of qualities of what we've done over our career."

obZen features just nine songs, including "Combustion," "This Spiteful Snake," "Dancers to a Discordant System" and the first single, "Bleed." Within the next month, Meshuggah plan to shoot a video for the track, with director Patric Ullaeus (Dimmu Borgir, In Flames) behind the lens. The band is still looking over treatments for the clip. According to Hagström, the band got off to a sluggish start when it came to writing and recording obZen, but eventually the guys hit their stride.

"We started out messing around with new material quite a long time ago, and at the beginning, it was slow-going — but then, it kind of snowballed, which it tends to do with us," he said. "The recording process was similar to what it's usually like for us, but this album was weird in a way. It took a bit longer to write this record, and working on it was pretty gruesome, because we had the usual adversities bands face going into the studio."

One thing Hagström didn't anticipate was how challenging it would be to play the songs live. "That rarely comes this much into play, but we really anticipated that it would be a lot easier to replicate these songs than it has been," he said, adding that obZen is one of the most highly technical offerings the band has ever put to tape.

Meshuggah opted to self-produce the album because they wanted to have more control over the entire process. And while Hagström says the band is more than thrilled with the final result, he has no idea how fans will react to it.

"It's always hard to tell what the reaction will be to our records," he said. "It always takes me a while, personally, to get perspective on an album — to know what I think of it. But we're really happy with it, and I guess that's all that counts. You can only do something that really satisfies you. Then, if people like it, that's an added bonus. You always love to see an album do well — it would be weird to make music and not want people to here it. But if the record doesn't sell a ton, it's not the be-all [and] end-all for us."

Meanwhile, Hagström said he's not at all impressed with the current state of metal and hopes obZen will inject some much-needed inspiration into a scene that he believes is turning bland.

"I could say there's a lot of sh-- out there I don't like, and that would be true," he said. "On the other hand, it's a situation where there's a lot of generic, formulaic music out there, and I'm hoping we can help create a countermovement, a strong one. The last two years, I haven't been listening to much metal at all — when you're recording and writing, you tend to block out what other bands are doing," so their work doesn't bleed into your own.

In late March, Meshuggah will hit the road with Ministry for that band's send-off run. Dubbed "C U LaTouR," the trek kicks off March 26 in Calgary, Alberta, and is set to wrap May 9 in Chicago. Hemlock are also on the bill. Hagström said Meshuggah signed on with no hesitation when they were approached about the tour.

"It made a lot of sense to us to make it happen," he said. "It's going to be fun, and it's going to be nice to be out on the road with Ministry. It's a weird setup, as far as the bill goes — but weird in a good way. It appeals to us. And it's Ministry's farewell tour, which will be something people will remember anyways. And the audiences will be huge."

As far as what the band is doing this summer, Hagström said it'll be hitting the European festival circuit. So far, Meshuggah have no additional U.S. touring plans. Would the band be open to playing the Ozzfest again, as they did in 2002?

"I'm not sure," he said. "We definitely wouldn't pay to do it — that's for sure."

The rest of the week's metal news:

Queensrÿche frontman Geoff Tate and Blackmore's Night singer Candice Night will star in the upcoming horror movie "House of Eternity," which is slated for a fall theatrical release. The film, by New York independent production company Fires at Midnight, is about a newly married NYC couple who move to a country home in North Carolina, unaware of its sullied history and the evil that lurks there. Tate will make his acting debut as Alder Grayson, the story's villain, and Night will play his wife, an innocent woman whose fate is determined by the superstitious minds of the 1700s. " 'House Of Eternity' contains something for everyone," Night said in a statement. "[There are] memorable characters struggling against powers far greater than they; desperate, heart-pounding action [scenes]; innovative approaches to classic horror; even humor and a forlorn love. Plus there's a villain who will become timeless." Jonathan Williams and Jarrod Feliciano are directing "House of Eternity," and J. Andrew Colletti is the writer and executive producer. ...

Droid, Ill Niño, Soil and Bobaflex will launch the Guerilla Carnival Tour on January 31 in Cleveland, with dates running through February 24 in Sayreville, New Jersey. "We are really excited to get back out on the road, and the Ill Nino guys are good friends of ours, so it will be great to see them rip it up every night," Droid singer James "Buddy" Eason said in a statement. "I really like the fact that all the bands on this tour are a little different than each other musically. Get ready. Here comes the pain." ... Papa Roach are in their rehearsal studio writing songs for the follow-up to 2006's The Paramour Sessions and will begin recording shortly. "I can't really comment on what it will be like because we still have so much time," guitarist Jerry Horton wrote on the band's MySpace page late last year. "Rest assured that it will have groove." ...

Arsonists Get All the Girls — whose bassist Patrick Mason died November 30 at age 21 — have replaced him with their old friend Adam Swan. "All of us have known Adam for years, and we couldn't think of anyone else better fit for the job," guitarist Arthur Alvarez said in a statement. "Patrick will never be replaced as our bass player, but we are forced to move forward as he would have wanted. He will always be in our hearts." The band has also hired guitarist Derek Yarra following Nick Cardinelli's decision to pursue a different career. "We have no hard feelings and wish him the best of luck," Alvarez said. "He will always remain a close friend, whether it is in the band or not." Arsonists Get All the Girls' first show with Swan and Yarra will be February 9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They have additional gigs scheduled through February 28 in Denver. ...

Kingdom of Sorrow, the side project featuring Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta and Crowbar/Down guitarist Kirk Windstein, will launch their first tour February 27 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Thy Will Be Done will open shows on the trek, which will run until March 7 in Detroit. "This tour will be killer," Jasta said in a press release. "If you like it loud, we hope to see you there. We are all pumped to be playing small clubs and bars." Kingdom of Sorrow's self-titled debut, co-produced by Jasta and Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall), comes out February 19. ... Static-X frontman Wayne Static married adult-film actress Tera Wray on January 10. The couple met at Ozzfest last summer. ...

Washington, D.C., metalcore band Darkest Hour will shoot a concert DVD at a show in Richmond, Virginia, on their tour with Cephalic Carnage, Emmure and Whitechapel. "The reason we choose Richmond is because, simply, motherf---ers in Virginia are crazy, and we wanted to document how Virginia parties for the world," the band wrote in a post on its MySpace page. ... What could be better than a March 25 re-release of legendary Swedish melodic death-metal band At the Gates' classic 1995 album, Slaughter of the Soul, featuring six extra songs? The same disc with a bonus live DVD. The previously unreleased set was shot in Krakow, Poland, on December 30, 1995, when the band was touring with Unleashed. The DVD will also include the documentary "The Making of Slaughter of the Soul." ...

Brazilian thrash band Chaosfear have started pre-production for their second, yet-untitled album, which is tentatively scheduled for release later this year. The follow-up to 2007's One Step Behind Anger will feature the return of original guitarist Edu Boccomino. "We are very excited," drummer Danilo de Freitas said in a post on the band's Web site. "The songs have the same energy as usual, and I believe that they are more aggressive. With the second guitar, everything is sounding heavier and there is more focus on solos." ... Keith Baxter, the original drummer for British folk-metal band Skyclad, died from liver failure in an English hospital on January 4. He was 36. Baxter played on five albums with Skyclad before joining the successful rock band 3 Colours Red and performing on two of their records. He also played with Elevation and Therapy?

Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia thinks too much is made about ... well, how freakin' gorgeous she is. In the Italian metalists' press shots, all six members are present, but Scabbia's front and center, striking a seductive pose. She even graces the cover of Revolver's March issue, next to the headline, "The Hottest Chicks in Metal." When the band's on the road, countless male fans seek Scabbia out, proposing marriage. But while the media seems to be fixated on her looks, she said she wants fans to focus on the Coil's music.

"You'll never see 'The Hottest Men in Metal,' because it's not that common for the metal scene to have girls up front," she said. "So it's the easiest thing to [comment on], because it's obvious I'm the different element to the band. You can take advantage of [the attention] if you're sure of your own potential, if you're sure of what the band can give. You can play with your image and the image of the band itself. But when people buy the record, they don't buy the image. They buy it for the music. So when you're sure you can put out a good album, it doesn't matter. It's just more appealing. Even if you advertise tires for a car, you see a naked woman in the ads — and that's not the point, but it's just more appealing. It's a representation of art, in a way."

The Milanese band's latest album, Karmacode, hit record stores on Tuesday — some four years after the band's previous LP, Comalies. According to a spokesperson for the band's label, the album's on track to sell about 40,000 copies in its first week, which could earn Lacuna Coil a Billboard top-20 debut next week.

During those four years in between records, Scabbia said the band has evolved as people and as musicians, and that's reflected on Karmacode.

"We've grown, so this time we spontaneously decided to mix up the European [metal] sound with the American one," she said. "You can still recognize our style, which is more melodic and aggressive, but you can also feel the European vibe given by the real strings we put in the album, the Mediterranean influences. We have some Arabian sounds on the record. But at the same time, every single instrument has a bigger importance. The rhythm section is huge, the guitars are really loud — there is an American sound, which is really big compared to European productions. I cannot think of a band that mixed up the two things; most bands are doing one style or the other."

And this summer, Lacuna Coil will be bringing that sound to American audiences, as the main-stage openers on this year's Ozzfest. Coil co-vocalist Andrea Ferro (who is male, by the way) said with pride that it marks the first time an Italian band has been asked to perform on the main stage, as well as the first time a female-fronted group has been asked to do it.

While Karmacode isn't an out-and-out concept record, Scabbia said the lyrics have a common thematic thread. "It's about how spirituality can live in the modern days. We're not talking about any religion, but a relationship you can have with people and the environment around you. Today, everything is so chaotic, everything is so fast with the Internet. Everyone has a cell phone and laptop, and sometimes you lose touch with reality."

The band's video for "Our Truth," the album's first single, was filmed in Los Angeles with the Fort Awesome (Disturbed, System of a Down) directorial duo. In it, the band is seen performing within the confines of a snow globe. The shoot was exhausting, as "they wanted us to do everything at double the speed, because they needed to slow down the tape so it looked like the snow was falling slower, like in an actual snow globe," Ferro said. "We had to do it a lot of times, because they need to shoot from different angles, so you end up hating the song at the end of the day! You don't want to hear it anymore," Scabbia said.

The group has also shot a video for the second single, "Closer," which should start airing in late June. Neither Scabbia nor Ferro would discuss the concept, other than to say it includes no performance footage and is "more like a little movie."

Fans can catch the band on tour with Rob Zombie and Bullet for My Valentine; dates for that trek run through May 5.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Queensrÿche's 1988 conceptual masterpiece, Operation: Mindcrime, will be getting the big-screen treatment, according to frontman Geoff Tate. He said the band has hired a screenwriter to adapt the LP into a feature film, and that they're in the midst of shopping it to Hollywood studios. "I worked over the last year and a half with a Hollywood screenwriter named Mark Shepherd," Tate said. "He developed a screenplay out of the story. It's incredible; I hope that it can be made into a movie soon. Our agency is shopping it around Hollywood. I think it's going to be an incredibly powerful film. It starts with one part, and then we have plans for a sequel as well." The band's latest disc, Operation: Mindcrime II, hit stores this week. ...

After Canadian documentarian Sam Dunn interviewed members of Voivod for his upcoming movie "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey," Voivod recruited him to make a film about their group. "It was a real honor to be asked, and we've already started shooting," said Dunn. "The documentary is going to be about Piggy's life [the band's founding guitarist, Denis D'Amour, who passed away of colon cancer last year] and the making of the new record and how those are tied together." No release date has been set for the project. "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" will come out as a double-DVD on May 23. ...

Trivium's breakout 2005 LP Ascendancy will be re-released on May 9 as a special expanded edition with a DVD, exclusive previously unreleased tracks, live and promo video footage and new artwork. Fans can catch the band this summer, on the second installment of the Sounds of the Underground festival. ...

Walls of Jericho, who are on the bill for this summer's Ozzfest, finished recording the forthcoming With Devils Amongst Us All on Wednesday; the album is being produced by Ben Schigel (Allele, Chimaira). A June 27 release date has been set. Frontwoman Candace Kucsulain said the disc will feature either 11 or 12 tracks, none of which has been titled yet. ...

Who knew Dane Cook was a stoner metal fan? The clean and sober comic has decided to use Nebula's "Lightbringer" in his new HBO series "Tourgasm," which starts airing May 7. The track, which is from the band's new album Apollo, will play while Cook addresses the camera to explain the setup for one of the scenes in the show. ...

San Diego's gore-grind dudes Cattle Decapitation will issue Karma.Bloody.Karma in either June or July. According to a statement from the band, "This will be the most nihilistic, pessimistic and hateful record we've ever done lyrically, and musically you can expect, [as] one of our friends has said perfectly about it, a very 'schizophrenic' release." The disc will feature a dozen songs, including "Success Is ... (Hanging By the Neck)," "Total Gore" and "Of Human Pride & Flatulence." The band is also searching for a new drummer, following the departure of Michael Laughlin; he cited "personal reasons" for his decision. Want to audition? Check the band's MySpace page. Cattle Decapitation has also added a second guitarist, Kevin "Fetus" Bernier. ...

Shai Hulud's 1997 albums A Profound Hatred of Man and Hearts Once Nourished With Hope and Compassion have been remastered and will be released this summer via Revelation Records. Both will feature new artwork and unreleased bonus material. ...

British chaoscore act Sikth's forthcoming Death of a Dead Day will hit stores on June 6; look for the release to boast a dozen cuts, including "Flogging the Horses," "Way Beyond the Fond Old River" and "Sanguine Seas Of Bigotry." ...

Atlanta extreme death metallers Daath have signed with Roadrunner Records. Look for the band's forthcoming LP, which is being produced by ex-Obituary guitarist James Murphy — to land in stores this fall. Called The Hinderers, the disc will feature the tracks "Festival Mass Soulform," "Ovum," and "Who Will Take The Blame." ...

British metallists DragonForce have also inked a deal with Roadrunner. The label will release the band's Inhuman Rampage LP, which was released overseas back in January, this summer.

The trio who will record with producer Roy Z, expect to have an album out in summer, but no further details were available at press time, according to a spokesperson for Halford and Dickinson.

Last week, Tate and Dickinson joined Halford onstage at the latter's concert in London for a rendition of "One You Love to Hate," a song written by Halford, Dickinson and Roy Z that's on Halford's current album, Resurrection.

Also, the three will perform live again next month. The band has been added to a January 9 Mexico City concert already scheduled to feature Iron Maiden and Halford, a Queensryche spokesperson said.

Almost five years to the day after losing his custom made guitar to a passing thief, Queensryche guitarist Michael Wilton has gotten it back.

A Redmond, WA guitar player named Bill Brumlow was in a Redmond recording studio with his own band, a progressive rock group called Dream Train, when the studio owner recognized the instrument, a customized ESP worth in the neighborhood of $2000, as Wilton's. Wilton was contacted, came to the studio, happily ID'd the guitar, and took it home.

"I paid $500 for it," Brumlow told MTV News, "and Michael (Wilton) asked me what I wanted for it, but it didn't feel right selling him his own guitar, so I just gave it to him." Brumlow had bought the guitar from a collector he met when the man came into his glass installation store two and a half years previously.

Wilton told Brumlow that he'd take him out for a couple of drinks in the next week or so. Coincidentally, Brumlow had attended the same high school as Wilton, and once installed
a new windshield in his Mercedes.

Meanwhile Queensryche appeared at a fan club concert staged this past Saturday night in Seattle, where they debuted material from a new album that has been recorded, but as yet does not have a firm release date. The band had fallen victim to the closing of their label, EMI, late in 1997 and apparently they have not been able to sign with another major.

They declined to comment on the situation in an online chat on the weekend. "The record label question is a very in-depth discussion that is perhaps better left undiscussed here," typed singer Geoff Tate. He added that they intend to tour in the Spring.

Sources tell MTV News that Queensryche has signed or is about to sign to an unnamed independent. Calls to the band's management to confirm that information were not returned.

Fans can hear three tracks from the group's pending album at the official Queensryche website, www.queensryche.com.

In other news, Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield and partner Paul Speer have been nominated for a Grammy for their production of a long form video/DVD for "TeleV0id." The film is a Miramar visual project devoted to computer animation.

Guitarist and co-writer Chris DeGarmo has left Queensrÿche, but reports differ as to the future of the band.

A report from KNAC, the Los Angeles metal radio station that has taken up residence on the Internet, tells MTV News that the band has decided to break up after the departure of DeGarmo and after the band's record label, EMI, folded. According to KNAC, the band will soon issue a press release citing "creative differences" as the reason for the break-up.

Meanwhile the Queensryche Campaign website (the band's official website at www.queensryche.com) says that a replacement guitarist has been chosen and will be announced shortly. The report adds that DeGarmo has been working with Peter Cornell, the brother of Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, and will continue to do so.

A Queensrÿche management representative confirmed that DeGarmo had left the group and would be working with Cornell,
but said the rest of the band were still considering their options.

Queensrÿche have been together for almost 17 years and have recorded eight albums. They formed in 1981 in Bellevue, Washington and the group's art-metal albums (especially the concept work "Operation: Mindcrime") earned the band a place in the rock landscape as the thinking person's metal band.

Queensrÿche's latest effort, 1997's "Hear In The Now Frontier," landed in the "Billboard" top 20 in its first week in stores, but quickly faded into oblivion. Following the demise of EMI, the band released their singles on Virgin Records. A Virgin Records rep could not confirm, however, that the band was scheduled to release a new album for that label. According to the Queensrÿche Campaign website, they had written roughly a dozen songs for the new effort.

Rumors of DeGarmo's possible departure began surfacing last fall when the guitarist began working with Cornell, who was reportedly recording
a solo album. Cornell, aside from his familiy connections, has been best known as the frontman with Seattle's Inflatable Souls.

June 24 [12:00 EDT] -- Queensrÿche bassist Eddie Jackson proposed to his longtime girlfriend Teresa on stage at the Gorge in their home state of Washington Saturday night. He popped the question right before the encore.

She said yes.

The band had more good news to impart. They confirmed they would be signing with Virgin Records after the demise of their previous label last week, EMI Records.

The news wasn't all good though. The band's huge video screen couldn't be used for the show due to high winds, and the date only sold 6000 or so tickets, not great numbers considering the venue's proximity to the boys' hometown of Seattle. The Gorge is in George, Washington, two and some hours out of the city.

The tour, which started June 17 in Rapid City, South Dakota, is on the heels of the band's new EMI album, Hear in the Now Frontier.

June 11 [16:00 EDT] -- Secret dates seem to be the in thing these days and Queensrÿche got in on the action with a "Hidden Desert Show" in front of a small number of winning fans and 29 satellite dishes at the space age Very Large Array facility in Magdalena, New Mexico, June 5.

The performance was broadcast via satellite to 120 rock radio stations around the country. The band played an hour and a forty-five minutes although only eight songs were broadcast live on the air. The location was not disclosed prior to the event.

The Very Large Array is a major astronomical radio observatory openied in 1980, consisting of 27 giant (81-foot) antennas arranged in a huge Y pattern. The operation observes astronomical objects including the stars, the sun, the planets and most recently the Hale-Bopp comet and also tracks weather features and satellites. It¹s located on the Plains of San Agustin, west of Socorro, New Mexico.

The facility was also used as the backdrop in
the forthcoming film "Contact" starting Jodie Foster, based on the Carl Sagan's novel of the same name.

Geoff Tate commented in a press release, "We had heard of this site for years. We thought this location was the most sophisticated listening post on earth and felt it was particularly appropriate with the theme of our new album."

The album, "Hear in the Now Frontier" has already seen the first single, "Sign Of The Times," lodged in the Top 5 at rock radio. The band's official 40-city tour will kick off in Rapid City, SD on June 17.

Says Queensrÿche, in hopes of foraging new frontiers for unsigned talent, the band will gracefully be offering the opening slot on their tour to one unsigned band in each market.
