After breaking through with 1999's "Fundamental" and a stint on last summer's Ozzfest, the Latino metallers of Puya will soon return to the studio to begin work on a new album.

In two weeks, the band will convene in a Vancouver, Canada recording studio with producer Garth (GGGarth) Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, L7, Kittie, etc.) to begin work on its sophomore effort. Once again, the group looks to pepper the mix with its Latin flavor, but plans to record more English language lyrics than fans found on "Fundamental."

MCA Records notes that the new album should be finished and in record stores by September or October of this year.

Puya made impressive inroads in bringing rock en espanol to the mainstream with "Fundamental," which earned the band the title of Rock/Fusion Album Of The Year at last month's Billboard Latin Music Awards (see "Lopez, Cypress Hill, Puya, Win Billboard Latin Awards").
Through excessive touring on Ozzfest, the SnoCore tour (with System Of A Down, Incubus, and Mr. Bungle), the Watcha Tour (with Fishbone, Cafe Tacuba, and others), and other outings, the band managed to sell more than 70,000 copies of "Fundamental" in the U.S. despite the fact that the album was recorded primarily in Spanish.

Latin rockers Puya and the Lars Ulrich-approved Canadian outfit DDT will join Megadeth and Type O Negative for next week's benefit show marking the 15th anniversary of hard rock establishment Concrete Marketing.
The show, set for New York's Roseland Ballroom on September 1, will benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation's fight against pediatric AIDS while helping Concrete celebrate 15 years of helping the careers of some of hard rock's finest.
The event finds Puya still relatively fresh from a successful run on this summer's Ozzfest outing, while marking one of DDT's most high-profile gigs to date. Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich came across the band and soon signed DDT to his TMC record label (which is distributed through Elektra Records).
In addition to Megadeth, Type O, Puya, and DDT, next week's benefit will also feature what is being called an all-star tribute to Black Sabbath, though the names of those involved are being kept under wraps until the show.

--

After some last minute shuffling, the 1999 Watcha Tour has announced a final lineup for its inaugural outing, which is slated to kick off on August 1 in Miami.
The Latin-tinged offshoot of the highly successful Warped Festival now features a bill that includes Control Machete, Illya Kuryaki, the Chris Perez Band, Molotov, Cafe Tacuba, and Puya, which will roll into Watcha after wrapping up its stint on this year's Ozzfest.
Other bands booked for one or more of the Watcha Tour dates are Fishbone, Titan, Royal Crown Revue, Union 13, Atomic Fireballs, Todos Tus Muertos, Bersuit, Enanitos Verdes, and Viva Malpache.
An exact lineup for each date of the Watcha Tour is expected to get hammered out with the next week or so, but artists on the bill will most likely rotate from city to city.
Cypress Hill had signed on to headline Watcha, but pulled out last month in order to concentrate on recording a pair of new albums, one in English and another in Spanish (see "Cypress Hill Steps Down From Watcha Tour").
After Cypress balked, organizers told MTV News that they were negotiating with rapper Eminem to fill the vacant spot, since he would already be out on the road with the Warped Tour, but he turned down the offer as well.
Confirmed dates and venues for the '99 Watcha Tour:

8/1 - Miami, FL @ Pompano Amphitheater
8/2 - Orlando, FL @ Central Florida Fairgrounds
8/3 - Atlanta, GA @ International Ballroom
8/5 - San Antonio, TX @ Sunken Garden Amphitheater
8/6 - Dallas, TX @ Bronco Bowl
8/7 - South Padre Island, TX @ Charlie's
8/8 - Houston, TX @ Woodlands Pavilion
8/10 - El Paso, TX @ UTEP
8/12 - Phoenix, AZ @ Celebrity
8/13 - San Diego, CA Coors Amphitheater
8/14 - San Francisco, CA @ Santa Jose Fairgrounds
8/15 - Los Angeles, CA @ Greek Theater

If you're an aspiring metalhead, you probably couldn't dream up a better summer than the one the guys in Puya have ahead of them.
The band, which infuses crunching melodies with the Latin beats of its native Puerto Rico, returns to its homeland this week to open for Kiss Wednesday night at San Juan's Roberto Clemente Stadium.
"It's incredible, man," Puya guitarist Ramon Ortiz told MTV News of the opportunity.
"To top it off, it's in our home," drummer Eduardo Paniagua added.
The four members of Puya (Ortiz, Paniagua, vocalist Sergio Curbelo, and bassist Harold Hopkins) left San Juan for Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1992, so this week's show gives the band a couple of reasons to celebrate.
"It's gonna be incredible," Paniagua said. "I've never seen Kiss in concert myself, so it's gonna be great."

"I saw them, but when they took the makeup off, the 'Animalize' tour," Ortiz noted.
"But now it's like the comeback," Paniagua said. "It's gonna be great." [RealVideo]
The band will then open a handful of dates for Gwar, including a slot on this month's New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in Worcester, Massachusetts. There the band will share the stage with Candiria, Morbid Angel, Earth Crisis, and a boatload of others for three very loud days that begin on April 30 (see "Gwar, Morbid Angel, Misfits, More Sign On For Metal Fest").
Puya then moves on to the granddaddy of all metal shindigs, the Ozzfest, where the band will spend the summer opening for the recently reunited Black Sabbath.
 Paniagua said.
Puya will also get the chance to rub shoulders with Rob Zombie, Slayer, Primus, Deftones, System Of A Down, Static X, and its old tourmates Fear Factory on this summer's Ozzfest, which kicks off on May 27 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

This summer's version of the annual Ozzfest excursion will bring sets from Rob Zombie, the Deftones, and Slayer as well as the farewell tour from Black Sabbath.
According to Sharon Osbourne, the wife and manager of Sabbath frontman and Ozzfest namesake Ozzy Osbourne, the recently reunited metal godfathers in Sabbath will headline this year's show. Osbourne also noted that the tour will mark Sabbath's swansong as the group plans to disband permanently after Ozzfest to focus on solo projects.
Zombie, Slayer, and the Deftones as well as Primus, Godsmack and System Of A Down are also confirmed for the tour's main stage. Second stage acts will include Judas Priest, Nashville Pussy, Puya, Pushmonkey and the unsigned bands Flashpoint and Apartment 26 (which features Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler's son).
The tour kicks off on May 28 at a Florida venue still to be determined and wraps July 17 in Los Angeles.
