Flaming Lips, Wilco, 'Commercial Weirdo' Avril Lavigne Head Up 'SpongeBob' LP

Not since Elvis Costello crossed preppy with punk in the early '80s has it been so hip to be down with someone so square.

A range of artists from music's hipster elite have made contributions to the soundtrack to the upcoming "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie." The Flaming Lips lead the pack with the first single, "SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy," which will appear alongside tunes from Wilco, the Shins, Ween, Prince Paul and one half of the Dust Brothers.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne was even a bit surprised to discover the company he keeps on the album, set for release November 9.

"I actually suggested that maybe I could try to get Justin Timberlake to do a duet with us, as an off-the-cuff idea," Coyne said. "But [Nickelodeon series creator Stephen Hillenburg] said, 'I don't want any of those sort of commercial weirdos on there. I don't like those commercial people. I like you guys, and Wilco and Ween.' "

Using Hillenburg's criteria, the biggest "commercial weirdo" on the soundtrack must be Avril Lavigne, though her version of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" theme song ("Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? ... SpongeBob SquarePants!") is fathoms away from anything on her two hugely successful albums. Non-commercial-weirdos Wilco perform "I'm Just a Kid," backed by singer Jeff Tweedy's 8-year-old son Spencer's band, the Blisters. Mike Simpson, one half of production duo the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys), lends "The Goofy Goober Song" and Motörhead re-recorded their 1992 song "You Better Run" as "You'd Better Swim."

"It's what we call 'reasonably weird adult music,' " Coyne explained of the flavor of the soundtrack. "I don't think a lot of people consider Wilco weird — well, maybe a few of their records are weird. There's kind of that post-Radioheadishness that goes on now that people accept as being weird, or sophisticated or something, and Wilco definitely falls into that."

Unlike some of the other soundtrack participants, Coyne wasn't that familiar with the world of SpongeBob SquarePants. A few episodes later, he realized the show isn't entirely kid's stuff.

"Hillenburg wanted people who liked SpongeBob, who felt some kinship with the characters, and the absurdness and surreal-ness of it, and I truly think the show is clever and funny and sick."

Once tapped to pen the soundtrack's single, Coyne watched the film but swore most of the details to secrecy — except for the one that inspired the inspirational and extensively titled "SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy."

"There's a scene in the movie where they confront this psychic wall of energy, and I thought, 'Whoa, that sounds like a great metaphor for the idea of being trapped inside your own life and wanting to break free from the restrictions of your own identity to become something new and different," Coyne said. "I thought that sounded like a very Flaming Lips-ish metaphor."

While working on the Flaming Lips' new album, At War With the Mystics, at longtime producer Dave Fridmann's studio in upstate New York, Coyne is also devising a concept for the "SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" video. Naturally, all the descriptors Coyne had used thus far in the conversation — weird, absurd, surreal — will apply to the song's visual companion.

"I'm trying to come up with a concept that lets us be the Flaming Lips in SpongeBob's world," Coyne explained. "So I'm trying to think of scenarios where we can be pirates, really dirty and grimy. There might be a part where we'll be in space bubbles, like the kind I walk around in in concert. And what I think is the most inspired idea is ... whenever there's a shot [in the series] that shows SpongeBob's leg or arm, it'll zoom in and you see a few big hairs or a few pimples. I want to build a set where there's a giant elbow or arm or wrist, and when you look in close, there are pimples. Even closer and you'll see that the Flaming Lips are these singing, playing pimples on SpongeBob's arm. I think we can do that."

"The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" opens in theaters November 19.

Track list for "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" soundtrack, according to Warner Bros. Records (not final order):

Masta Ace Wants Hip-Hop Fans To Eat Their Veggies Too

Even though rap dominates sales charts, radio and video play and has
infiltrated the fashion and film industries, some hip-hop artists
are less than pleased with the typically myopic, materialistic message of
many chart-topping songs.

"I feel like the average hip-hop fan is not well-rounded at all," said Masta
Ace, whose recently released Disposable Arts album makes keen, pointed
observations about the current state of hip-hop. "Their musical diet is not
a balanced one. It's a problem and it's unfortunate. There's nothing wrong
with having some fun on a given night — I have fun like the next man. But
it needs to be about more than that at the end of the day, but unfortunately
not enough of our people have figured that out yet. My job in this is to be
one of the providers of balance."

Indeed, the follow-up to 1995's Sittin' on Chrome exhibits the balance
that such hip-hop acts as KRS-One, Outkast, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Mystic
and the Coup provide. Disposable Arts contains several interwoven
storylines that include one in which Ace enrolls in IDA, the Institute of
Disposable Arts, where he studies hip-hop. Through skits, Ace's journey at
the school is detailed, while the songs feature Ace's signature brand of
clever phrasings, punchline-heavy lyrics, gripping tales of ghetto life and
insightful political commentary.

Greg Nice delivers the chorus on the festive hip-hop commentary "Don't
Understand," while the somber "Dear Diary" has Ace questioning his place in
hip-hop's pantheon. The latter is a rare hip-hop moment, one where an
artist portrays himself as vulnerable and confused. "Eh, yo, Ace/ Don't
tell me you thinking about a return," Ace raps on the cut, assuming the role
of his diary. "I'm kind of concerned/ When will you old cats ever learn?/ It's time to hang it up."

"It was self-analyzation," Ace said of "Dear Diary." "The lyrics on that
song are the way I feel some days when I wake up. 'Why are you even
considering making records anymore? Nobody's really checking for it
anymore. You're wasting your time. There's maybe 10 cats that are going to
buy your record.' I wake up sometimes and I feel that way. I'm being
honest about my feelings and maybe saying some stuff that people might be
saying."

Looking back at his career, which includes collaborations with
Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Marley Marl and others, Ace offers the thankful
"No Regrets," a reflective history of sorts where he gives praise to all of
those who contributed to his better musical memories.

On a less explicit narrative line, Disposable Arts explores the
relationship between Ace's character and his roommate at IDA, portrayed on
the album by MC Paul Barman, a white, Jewish, Prince Paul affiliate. Some of
the interaction between Ace and Barman was inspired by Ace's own trip to
college. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island and interacted
with many Maine and Vermont natives who had never been around black people and
had a cursory knowledge of hip-hop, at best.

Barman's character actively pursues hip-hop, though. In fact, he's even performing a freestyle rap when Ace first meets him in their dorm room.

The interaction between Ace and Barman is sometimes tense and always
entertaining. Like the songs on Disposable Arts, these skits provide a
riveting story of their own. "When people spend their $15 or $16.99 to buy a
CD, I think they want to feel like they bought something that's valuable,
that something was a good purchase, that somebody actually took time and put
together a project," Ace said. "They didn't just put anything together,
throwing some songs back to back and put a label on it. I really respect
the buyer, the fan, the listener because I'm one and I know that I want to
be entertained. I try to look at it from that perspective and try to make a
record as if I was going out and buying it."

As a fan of hip-hop, Ace hopes to encourage fans to respect the art form and
its architects. When he attended a recent Run-DMC
concert, he was disappointed with the lukewarm response fans gave the
legendary Queens trio.

"They deserve a certain amount of energy, a certain amount of love," Ace
said. "They should be made to feel like they are some of hip-hop's pioneers. When people talk about them or when they're mentioned, people that really know give it up, but a lot of people could care less.

"I look at rock and roll and I see cats that don't do an album for 10 years
and then tour and sell out stadiums," he continued. "I feel like we need to
reach that point in hip-hop. Fans need to embrace their past heroes, still
uphold and respect music that was from 10, five, three years ago."

Masta Ace, who has released albums in three different decades, hopes that
Disposable Arts as well as other releases from like-minded artists will
help hip-hop regain its balance. Coming from an era where such disparate
artists as Biz Markie, Public Enemy, N.W.A, Too Short and the Geto Boys were
all popular, Ace knows that it can happen.

"We have to reach a point where people want to hear more than one thing,"
Ace said. "From a fan's perspective, people are just feeding more into the
pursuit of ice, platinum, cars and rims, and that's all that it's about.

"Sometimes I get depressed and wonder, 'What's wrong with people?' We all
would like a nice car and jewelry, but you want people to be a little more
well-rounded than they are."

DJs ranging from Orgy's Jay Gordon to Handsome Boy Modeling School's Prince Paul will put their own spin on Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory for a remix album due in January.

"We've always been into remixes," Linkin Park DJ Joseph Hahn said Wednesday (September 26). "We talked about doing something like this even before we were signed."

Hip-hop producer the Alchemist and Dilated Peoples' Evidence, along with newcomers DJ Z-Trip, the Girl Scouts and the Humble Brothers have also signed on to remix tracks from the Southern California rap-rockers' 2000 debut.

"We hand-picked them ourselves," Hahn said. "Other bands have done stuff like this before, and you can just tell their label picked whoever the hot DJs were. We come from the DJ perspective, and we put a lot of thought into who we wanted. We got a good mix of hip-hop and electro."

Hahn and Linkin Park MC Mike Shinoda are handling the remixes of "With You" and "Crawling," respectively. Hahn said the Crystal Method and Beat Junkies producer Kutmasta Kurt may also participate.

Orgy's Gordon recently invited the band to his studio to hear his remix of "Points of Authority," which Hahn said had all sorts of technological twists.

Linkin Park have ventured further into turntablism in recent months with the famed X-Ecutioners, performing with the DJ collective at the MTV Video Music Awards and collaborating with them on "It's Going Down," the first single from the X-Ecutioners' second album, Built From Scratch (see "Linkin Park, Xzibit, Big Pun Turn Up On X-Ecutioners' Latest"). Hahn plans to direct a video for the single early next year, around the album's January 29 release date.

Meanwhile, Linkin Park are working on song ideas for their next album, which they hope to record in early March after a two-month tour with Korn that is currently in the planning stages.

"Honestly, we really aren't focusing too much on 'Let's see if we can get crazy and what we can do different.' We do what we've always done, and we just focus on the style of music we like to write, which is intermingling different genres of music," singer Chester Bennington said backstage at the VMAs. "It's just important for us to write good songs that we can enjoy and think other people can enjoy."

Linkin Park will finish out the year with Staind and Stone Temple Pilots on the Family Values Tour, which kicks off October 11 in Cleveland (see "Family Values Tour Dates Announced"). First they'll play KIOZ-FM's When Bands Attack festival in Chula Vista, California, on Friday with Staind, Godsmack and others. They will be donating their profits from the show to the Red Cross and have asked their record label and local businesses to match them.

Prince Paul may be the godfather of the "skit" that is now a hip-hop album staple, and he's previously worked with the likes of De La Soul and Chris Rock. He released the star-studded album "Prince Among Thieves" earlier this year, and now Paul is at it again.
Using the alias "Chest Rockwell" and wearing a fake mustache, Prince Paul has teamed up with "Nathaniel Merriwether," a.k.a. Dr. Octagon producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, to create Handsome Boy Modeling School.
According to the superduo, their debut album "So... How's Your Girl?" was inspired by the opening scene in the classic movie "Saturday Night Fever" starring a young John Travolta. Fully in character as Mr. Merriwether, "The Automator" explained the connection to MTV News.
"So [John Travolta is] strutting down the street," Dan/Nathaniel began began,
"So... After performing in June at the 1999 Tibetan Freedom Concert held in Chicago, hip-hop producers Prince Paul and Dan "The Automator" Nakamura are preparing to release a new album from its (concept) supergroup/side project, the Handsome Boy Modeling School.
Trugoy of De La Soul hooks up with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien for one track, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori teams with Mike D of the Beastie Boys, Brand Nubian's Grand Puba joins Sadat X, while DJ Shadow shares the mix table with DJ Quest.
Another cut from the record, "Sunshine," features what's sure to be a rather bizarre collaboration between Sean Lennon, Money Mark, Father Guido Sarducci, Mark Hayden of the band Spain, and Tarnation's Paula Frazier.
The Handsome Boy Modeling School's "… So How's Your Girl?" is due out later this year.

De La Soul, Prince Paul, Rakim, Das EFX, and Craig Mack have all agreed to perform at a special benefit concert being held on August 24 at Tramp's in New York City to raise funds for one of their hip-hop colleagues, Poetic.
Poetic, who has written and produced tracks for the Rza-side project, the Gravediggaz, was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year, and his representatives tell MTV that Poetic's condition has reached an extremely critical stage.
The money raised by next month's show will be used to pay for Poetic's continuing chemotherapy treatments, and spokespeople from the rapper's label indicate that a second benefit show for Poetic is currently being planned for September.

What started out as a one-off club date is turning into quite the little tour for Bush.
In addition to a club date in Pomona, California on Thursday and a private showcase gig in Los Angeles (see "Bush Confirms Club Gig; Settlement Looming In Label Dispute"), the band plans to hit small venues in San Diego and New York in the coming weeks.
Before playing Pomona's Glass House next Thursday and L.A.'s Roxy next Friday, the band will head to Montezuma Hall in San Diego for a show on Tuesday.
The band has also lined up three dates at New York's Irving Plaza on July 21, 22, and 23 as part of the annual Digital Club Festival (formerly the Intel Music Fest). The band joins a roster that includes Chuck D's Confrontation Camp, The Donnas, Frank Black, Prince Paul, Looper, Spain, the Delta 72, and many others.
The festival will sprawl over four nights in New York from July 20-23, and many other acts are expected to be announced in
the coming weeks. Badges for the festival (which will be hosted in numerous NYC venues like Knitting Factory, Tramps, CBGB's, Mercury Lounge, Bottom Line, and more) will go on sale on June 14 and will give fans access to more than 350 shows.
Users can find more information on this year's Digital Club Festival by visiting www.digitalclubfest.com.
