HOLLYWOOD — There are many perks to being a member of a politically conscious group. Like, for instance, a direct line to Bono.

"I called Bono and said, 'I'm about to do something crazy and ask you something crazy,' " Fugees rapper Pras recalled recently. "He started laughing. I told him what I was doing. He heard it. He said, 'Look, if it's going to help you, you got my blessing.' So I respect him for that."

What Pras played for the U2 singer is his latest single, "Haven't Found," a remake of sorts of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

"I'm a huge U2 fan," Pras said. "When you go take somebody's record, obviously you've got to be a fan of it. That's the only way it's going to come around the right way and not sound pretentious."

Pras has already shot the video, which can be viewed at www.haventfound.com. Fans can pause it and click on different areas of the screen for details on products used in the clip. "It's a new way to go interact with the videos," Pras said. "It's incredible."

"Haven't Found" is featured on Win, Lose or Draw, Pras' follow-up to 1998's Ghetto Superstar (see "Pras Taps Warren G, R. Kelly For New LP; Talks Fugees' Future"), which includes collaborations with Wyclef and Akon.

And speaking of Wyclef, Pras has reunited with his cousin and Lauryn Hill to work on the first Fugees album in almost 10 years (see "Fugees To Reunite In The Studio Once Hill Finishes Solo LP").

"We've been in the studio," Pras said of the group, which performed at the BET Awards (see "Destiny's Child Give Lap Dances, Fugees End Feud At BET Awards"). "We're trying to figure out how we're gonna do it, but we're working together."

On his fourth solo album, Preacher's Son, Wyclef Jean ascends a pulpit to proselytize and fantasize about a world free of gang violence, poverty and corruption.

In Clef's perfect hip-hop universe, beef is a four-letter word that never enters a rapper's vocabulary. "Imagine if Biggie and Pac never got shot and they both still was rulers of hip-hop," he raps on "Industry" before calling on modern rappers to settle their differences. "[What if] Nas and Jay-Z, they were still homies/ Squashed the beef with Ja Rule and 50/ And Benzino shook hands with Eminem/ And on the same record I heard Eve, Fox and Kim."

Other songs on Preacher's Son, which drops October 7, include "Next Generation," in which Wyclef contemplates life after death, and "Life in New York," which chronicles the ugliness of gun battles, "money, drugs and bitches" in the Big Apple.

Guests on the album include Scarface on "Next Generation," Patti LaBelle on "Family Reunion," Redman on "Baby Daddy" and Sharissa on "Take Me As I Am." Timbaland, Mobb Deep's Prodigy, Trick Daddy, Shells and U2 guitarist the Edge also contribute to the record. Wyclef recorded the disc in June and July at his New York studio, Platinum Sound.

Some might find it a bit hypocritical that Clef is calling for love in the hip-hop community when bad blood still exists between him and cousin Pras. Wyclef recently called his Fugees bandmate the Milli Vanilli of hip-hop and released a song called "Fake Ass Pras," which featured such scathing lines as "The fans want the Fugees back together/ The only thing they don't want is the third member/ ...Yeah, I seen your movie, son/ It made my stomach turn/ ... I'mma drop you harder than Sony did."

Rather than responding to Wyclef's jabs, Pras is focusing on his music. "I'm in the studio enhancing my career, and not making a pathetic attempt at destroying someone else's," he said.

Pras' second solo album, Cold Fire, is scheduled for year-end release and will feature around 16 songs, including the singles "One for my Ni**az" and "Light My Fire." Producers on the album include Kanye West (Jay-Z, Foxy Brown) and Salaam Remi (Fugees). Guests include Sean Paul, Sheek from the LOX, Sharli McQueen and Pras' crew: Mister, Tempamental and Robin Andre.

After announcing their partnership weeks ago, Wyclef Jean, De La Soul, and Black Eyed Peas have hammered out the first stretch of dates for the latest edition of MTV's Campus Invasion tour.

After years of rock-heavy Campus Invasion outings, this hip-hop-flavored take on the annual college tour will first touch down on October 3 in Providence, Rhode Island, on the campus of Johnson & Wales University, with more dates lined up through the end of October.

As we previously reported, the trek will mark Wyclef's first extensive U.S. tour behind his recently released second solo effort, "The Ecleftic - 2 Sides II A Book" (see "Wyclef, De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas Set For Campus Invasion"). For De La Soul, the tour gives the group the opportunity to promote its "Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump," which hit stores last month, while Black Eyed Peas will get the chance to drum up support for its "Bridging The Gap," which
arrives on September 26.

If you want to catch Wyclef, De La, and Black Eyed Peas, here's how the Campus Invasion itinerary looks so far (as always, tour dates are subject to change):

10/3 - Providence, RI @ Johnson & Wales University
10/5 - Charlottesville, VA @ University of Virginia
10/8 - Shippensburg, PA @ Shippensburg University
10/14 - Kent, OH @ Kent State
10/16 - De Kalb, IL Northern Illinois University
10/17 - Big Rapids, MI @ Ferris State
10/25 - Iowa City, IA @ University Of Iowa
10/26 - St. Louis, MO @ St. Louis University
10/27 - Columbia, MO @ University of Missouri
10/28 - Kirksville, MO @ Truman State

For more about the Campus Invasion tour, check out the Music section of MTV.com.

With his new film, "Turn It Up," in theaters this week, and another film, titled "Higher Ed," in the can, Pras is now gearing up for his return to the music scene with a new album, due out early next year.

The new record will mark Pras' first solo effort since 1998's "Ghetto Supastar," an album that directly inspired the current film, which at one time shared the same title as the LP (see "Pras, Ja Rule Report From The Set Of 'Ghetto Superstar'").

But now Pras said he has had time to "regroup and get [his] whole mind back into the music thing" and is ready to "really come out full blast" with his sophomore record, whose title tips its cap to a certain civil rights documentary from the 1980s.

"Well, actually, I'm back home finishing my [new] album right now," Pras told MTV News. "I'm going to drop it at the top of next year, and it's going to be right this time.

he added. "The name of the album is 'Eyes On The Pras.' I've got maybe two or three guest appearances. I've got my man R. Kelly on it, Scarface, Tha Outlawz, and my man Warren G." [RealVideo]

Aside from his solo work, Pras offered a hopeful note regarding the fate of the Fugees, the all-star hip-hop trio featuring his cousin Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill. The group hasn't released an album since 1996's multi-platinum "The Score," as the individual members have all branched out to do their own solo projects.

"Well, we're still trying to work it out," Pras said.
It's real deep, but only God knows, man, only God knows."

In a similar vein, Pras also addressed the tone and message behind "Where Fugees At?," a song from Wyclef's current album, "The Ecleftic." He said he understood where his cousin was coming from.

"It was interesting," Pras said of the track. "I took it with a grain of salt. We're still trying to figure it out. [Wyclef is] doing his thing, and a big up to what he's doing. But hopefully we can make [a new Fugees album] happen."

On the same day that Jay-Z and his "Hard Knock Life" tour counterparts hit the big screen in "Backstage," some other hip-hop heavyweights are heading to theaters as well.

"Turn It Up," the long-awaited film starring The Fugees' Pras and rapper Ja Rule, finally arrives on Wednesday, almost two years after Pras issued "Ghetto Supastar," the album on which the movie is based.

In the film, Pras plays Diamond, an aspiring hip-hop artist who spends all his time cutting demos in a Brooklyn studio, while Ja Rule portrays Gage, his longtime friend, who will do anything from stealing to dealing to help Diamond get a record deal (see "Ja Rule Connects In 'Turn It Up,' Readies '3:36' LP").

Pras already has lined up his next movie, "Higher Ed," about a track star (Pras) who gets a scholarship to a Southern school and is hounded by gang members from New York City (see ).

Earlier this year, Ja Rule told MTV News he planned to go before the cameras with John Leguizamo for the film "Stoop," by "Dead Presidents" director Jean Claude La Marre (see "Ja Rule Talks Murderers, Next LP, Film Project"). The MC will also appear in the actioner "Redline," starring Vin Diesel.

Coincidentally, Ja Rule also appears in "Backstage," Jay-Z's all-access look at the "Hard Knock Life" tour, which hits theaters the same day as "Turn It Up."

Directed by Chris Fiore, the "Backstage" documentary features Jay-Z, DMX, Method Man, Redman, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and a host of other superstars while casting an unflinching eye on the goings-on both onstage and backstage during the blockbuster 1999 hip-hop tour.

"You hear the music, but [you see] the things we do behind stage -- the feelings, the emotions, and all that," Jay-Z said of the flick
late last month at its New York City premiere (see "Jay-Z Points To Hip-Hop Unity In 'Backstage'").

In what may be a sign of good things to come at the box office, the soundtrack to "Backstage" will debut at number six on next week's "Billboard" album chart.

While the lights won't go up on the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards until Thursday, the hoopla surrounding the event officially kicks off Tuesday afternoon with the launch of MTV's Music Week.

The two-day event (yes, it's not technically a whole week) will see some of the Top 40's finest descend on New York for live performances, listening parties, and in-store appearances.

The whole shebang gets rolling on Tuesday with a free outdoor concert at Manhattan's South Street Seaport by Wyclef Jean at 3 p.m. Later that day, Lil' Zane will turn up at HMV Records in Times Square at 5 p.m. to greet fans and sign copies of his latest effort, "Young World: The Future."

On Tuesday evening, 200 fans will get an early taste of Radiohead's upcoming album, "Kid A," at a listening party staged at the Sony IMAX Theater at 68th Street and Broadway. Music Week's first day then concludes with a performance by Kina and some surprise guests at the downtown hot spot Joe's Pub.

Wednesday will find popsters Mandy Moore and BBMak following Wyclef's lead and descending on the Seaport for a free show starting at 3:30 p.m. Later that afternoon, BBMak will hit the Virgin Megastore at Union Square to sign copies of its debut album beginning at 5 p.m. Shortly after that, Papa Roach will get in on the action, hitting Coconuts Records at 51st Street and 6th Avenue for a CD signing that starts at 5:30 p.m. The string of events will conclude with two shows on Wednesday night when Travis plays New York's Roseland Ballroom while Fastball sets up shop at the Mercury Lounge.

Catch all the sizzlin', star-packed VMA action direct from Miami on August 28. MTV News' preshow kicks things off at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, followed by big show at 8 p.m.

Not even Wyclef, backed by the imposing power of the WWF's The Rock, can topple Nelly from the number one spot on the "Billboard" album chart.

According to sales figures released by SoundScan on Wednesday, the St. Louis rapper's "Country Grammar" will once again top the album heap next week. Nelly sold an additional 213,000 copies of "Country Grammar" to remain music's top dog.

In fact, much of the Top 10 remains unchanged next week, as Britney Spears, Eminem, the "Now That's What I Call Music" compilation, Creed, 'NSYNC, 3 Doors Down, and Papa Roach fill out slots two through eight on the chart.

The week's biggest debut brings some new blood to the upper regions of the album chart, as Wyclef Jean's "The Ecleftic - 2 Sides II A Book" shakes things up a bit. Bolstered by his hit single "It Doesn't Matter" (featuring The Rock), the sometime Fugee sold more than 95,000 copies of his latest solo effort, entering the chart at number nine.

Lil' Zane also
brings some fresh hip-hop to the chart; the rapper's "Young World: The Future" sold more than 40,000 copies to debut at number 25 on next week's chart.

The week's other notable debuts include Incubus' "When Incubus Attacks, Vol. 1" EP at 41, the soundtrack to "The Original Kings Of Comedy" at 50, Ruff Endz' "Love Crimes" at 52, hed (pe)'s "Broke" at 63, Souldecision's "No One Does It Better" at 103, Zebrahead's "Playmate Of The Year" at 127, Fourplay's "Yes Please" at 135, the soundtrack to "Bring It On" at 139, and Dar Williams' "The Green World" at 143.

As Wyclef Jean's second solo effort, "The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II A Book," arrives in stores this week, the hip-hop heavyweight's charitable organization, the Wyclef Jean Foundation, has just unveiled plans for a series of fund-raising events for its 2000-2001 season.

On September 6, Wyclef Jean will play a "Dance Through The Decades" show at the Copacabana in New York City, a sequel of sorts to a Caribbean-themed event held at the same venue last year that featured a guest appearance by U2's Bono (see "Wyclef Jean And Bono To Perform Benefit Single At NYC Club Show").

Jean will then head to the West Coast on November 2 for an invitation-only gig at the Armani Exchange on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles that will also serve as the official launch of the foundation's Web site at www.wyclefjeanfoundation.org.

Following the previously announced Carnegie Hall "Clef's Kids" show in New York City on January
19, 2001 (see "Wyclef Jean Lines Up Benefit Concert"), the Wyclef Jean Foundation will wrap up its season with the third-annual Haitian Benefit Concert in Miami on February 10.

The lineup for that show is still being sorted out, although organizers are planning to feature several hip-hop, reggae, and R&B artists at the all-day concert, set for the city's Bay Front Park.

The multiple events mark the foundation's most aggressive fund-raising campaign to date, and Wyclef recently chatted with MTV News about why he felt it was important to be involved in community-based charities.

"The reason it's important to give back [is that] you [can] do so much with what you have," Jean said.

"I got the fast cars and all of that stuff, but the kids will tell you that none of that means anything to me," he added. "I can walk through any 'hood, and I don't have any problems, and I know every stickup kid in every borough. When they come up to me, they go, 'Yo, this kid is real.'

"So money doesn't make you, and what I teach these kids is that respect is what makes you. If you're from a community, you've got to give back to that community. I was born in Haiti out of poverty. All I'm try[ing] to do is give back to that." [RealVideo]

In October, Wyclef Jean will head out the road to headline the latest edition of MTV's Campus Invasion tour, which will also feature performances from De La Soul and Black Eyed Peas (see ).

For more from Wyclef, be sure to check out the MTV News Online feature "Wyclef Jean: Mad Scientist."
