By now you've more than likely seen the video of Poison singer Bret Michaels' nasty run-in with a huge set piece at Sunday's Tony Awards. And you may have even seen pictures of the bloody aftermath, which included a busted-up nose and lacerations to his mouth.

Michaels' reps have made it clear that the singer felt like he was not treated fairly by the Tony Awards organization, but on Thursday Michaels finally broke his silence in a long letter posted on his official Web site in which he aired grievances while trying to maintain a good sense of humor about the whole incident.

"I am trying to remain very positive and somewhat humorous about the whole situation," Michaels wrote. "I apologize that I did not make a statement earlier as I have been feeling pretty beat up over the last few days. The fact is I was honored to be asked to perform at the event. The entire 'Rock of Ages' production [was] awesome and even though I was completely out of my element I was really enjoying myself prior to my injury. In fact all involved at the awards show treated me good.

"I had a great time at the Tonys right up until I got blindsided, I must admit it was a little blurry after that. In hindsight, there is no doubt I got my bell rung, unfortunately it has been posted and perhaps funny to watch, but I can assure you it has been painful to experience.

"In all honesty I had absolutely no idea what struck my head. Upon impact I thought a piece of the lighting rig had fallen out of the ceiling and as I fell back it seemed like my head struck the stage and I blacked out for a second. When I opened my eyes I noticed a large set prop coming down straight for me. I immediately pushed myself out of the way and amidst the chaos I laid on the floor and asked 'what the hell just happened?' "

Michaels wrote that following the impact, his nose, mouth and the back of his head felt numb and he vaguely remembers asking his minder, "Big John," if he had any teeth left in his mouth. "I knew I could move my arms and legs and that was an instant relief," continued Michaels, who had suffered a previous neck injury that caused him some concern following Sunday night's incident. "Somebody handed me a towel to wipe the blood from my face and in my dazed state I recall staring at what seemed to be Shrek, a talking goat head and several monkey like creatures. Over the last few days a lot of speculation as to what happened and who is to blame have surfaced. I need to make clear at no point since the incident occurred do I feel like the accident was malicious in any way and I feel this will all work itself out."

Michaels wrote that he found it "a little strange" that the only comment from the Tony organization in the wake of the onscreen accident was that he had missed his mark on the stage and that he was "completely fine."

"First, I thought, 'what mark?' as there was no official mark, just a retracting drum riser and an overhead prop being rapidly lowered which was out of my view," Michaels wrote. "Second, I think it was slightly irresponsible for them to report that I was fine without full knowledge of my condition, when a doctor hadn't even looked at me yet and I surely don't remember any X-Ray machines backstage. I am not looking for an apology, I only hoped that on a human level that the Tony organizations' representative would have expressed some concern for injury in their statement or at the very least claim they would be looking into the matter."

A spokesperson for the Tonys could not be reached at press time.

Michaels continued, "Whether it was a miscommunication, missed cue or missed mark no matter what the situation was the prop should have been stopped or at least slowed for a few more seconds until I cleared the stage. I apparently had less than two seconds to avoid being hit. It was evident I was backing up and moving in the direction to exit the stage for at least 30 to 40 feet and it is plain to see I had no clue this prop was descending. For [God's] sake, they have at least a five second delay to prevent the airing of unapproved expletives and nudity!"

Michaels said that "never at any point" during his Sunday morning rehearsal was he instructed that the set piece would be coming down and that he had to hurry to leave the stage. "Otherwise believe me I would have stopped or at least ducked so as not to be knocked out at the Tonys," he wrote. "Trust me I never wanted any of this to happen. I was simply doing as I was told which was to exit the stage as Poison's song 'Nothin' But a Good Time' came to a close.

"I feel for the actors and actresses who put in so much time and hard work on or off Broadway to get to the Tonys. This is their moment and I am sorry that some of it may have gotten overshadowed by my thick rocker cranium being struck by a stage prop. On a high note I hear it was the highest rated Tonys they have had in years." Broadway newbie Michaels lamented that he didn't get to see any of the other acts perform and was even more bummed that he could not attend any afterparties, "cuz rumor has it Anne Hathaway was going to be there and she is hot."

He ended the long missive, signed "Broadway Bret Michaels," by thanking his bandmates, crew and Broadway legend Liza Minnelli for rushing to his dressing room to check on him. And with good humor, he signed off, "I thank the Good Lord I have a thick skull and I have a feeling this may have been my first and final curtain call at the Tonys."

On Sunday night's Tony Awards, everyone was laughing after a descending set piece clocked Bret Michaels in the head. Host Neil Patrick Harris even cracked that the incident "gave headbanging a new meaning." The following day, as footage of the mishap became an Internet sensation, even more people were laughing.

But it seems that there was one group of people that didn't find the situation hilarious: the Poison frontman's representatives.

In a lengthy statement released late Tuesday to MTV News, those reps blasted the Tonys for dismissing the incident, and put the blame for Michael's injuries squarely on a "lack of communication" between the "Rock of Love" star and "the producers, directors, stage managers and crew" of the awards show.

"I find it surprising that a Tony spokesperson would brush off this incident with a comment stating 'Mr. Michaels missed his mark' with no mention of concern for his condition," spokesperson Janna Elias says in the statement. "If everyone at the Tonys [was] aware that Bret missed his mark, then they should have been aware enough to stop the set piece from hitting him or at least slowed it down until he cleared the stage. I feel had this incident happened to Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton or Elton John, the Tonys would have at least issued a letter of concern.

"Bret has performed live, with Poison or solo, for over 20 years and on a daily basis is around pyro, lasers and a moving light show. He understands that there is always an element of risk in any live performance, but Bret entrusts his safety to the crew, whose job it is to make sure the show goes off without a hitch," the statement continues. "However, in this situation Bret was not on his stage but was at the mercy of the Tonys. He was performing on the Tonys stage and had the reasonable expectation that that safety of the artist was a priority, and at no time did he do anything over-the-top or outlandish that would have put himself or others in a dangerous situation."

Ripping Tony host Harris for his comments following the accident — he joked that Michaels was fine and was doing shots backstage — the statement refutes reports that after being injured, the singer was laughing, joking and planning to hit the Tony Awards afterparties.

"We realize the show is live and must go on, however, it is unfortunate that the show's host made light of the situation without having any knowledge of the severity of Bret's injuries," Bob Wallerstein, another rep for Michaels added. "Comments that Mr. Harris was doing shots backstage with Mr. Michaels and that Bret was completely fine were untrue, considering Bret never saw Mr. Harris prior to, during or after the Tonys, but in fact was being attended to by medical personnel backstage. Michaels did not return to the stage, the seats nor attend any afterparties."

The statement concludes by saying that Michaels will release a statement of his own about the incident by the end of the week.

At press time, a rep for the Tonys had not granted MTV News' request for comment.

Rags-to-riches story "Billy Elliot" had a massive night at the 63rd annual Tony Awards on Sunday, winning 10 awards at the annual celebration of all things Broadway. But despite onstage cameos from Liza Minnelli and Dolly Parton and a top-notch hosting job by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, on Monday morning most people were talking about how the show almost killed Bret Michaels.

In honor of the nominations for "Rock of Ages," a theatrical celebration of '80s-era hair metal, Poison took the stage to perform their iconic "Nothin' But a Good Time" with the cast of the musical. Led by "Rock of Love" star/singer Bret Michaels, the band looked totally at home on the stage — until Michaels missed his mark at the end of the song and was slammed in the head by a large piece of scenery that descended from the ceiling. People.com reported that the extent of Michaels' injury was not known at press time, but he did not, as reported, break his nose. A publicist for the singer told the site that while Michaels was still hoping to hit some afterparties, he was planning to hit an ER first and get some X-rays to make sure he was not seriously injured.

Despite lots of hype and a handful of nominations between them, "9 to 5: The Musical" and "Rock of Ages" — the latter starring former "American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis — got blanked at the show, while the 1960s musical "Hair" won Best Revival of a Musical.

The Best Play award went to the comedy "God of Carnage," which chronicles a chaotic night of arguments between two sets of parents. "Carnage" star Marcia Gay Harden won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. Best Original Score was a win for the story of a family dealing with a mother's bipolar disorder, "Next to Normal." Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush took the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for "Exit the King," and Alice Ripley won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for "Next to Normal."

The sweep for "Elliot" — composed by Elton John — included wins for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (shared by young stars David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, Kiril Kulish), Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Gregory Jbara), Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations and Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Though it garnered eight nominations, "Shrek: The Musical" had to make do with just one win, for Best Costume Design of a Musical.

Veteran Angela Lansbury, 83, won her fifth Tony in the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for "Blithe Spirit," becoming the second actress to reach that milestone. And Minnelli's "Liza's at the Palace" beat out Will Ferrell's one-man show, "You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush," in the Special Theatrical Event category.

Bret Michaels is in a rather unique position — and it's not the kind you might think ...

See, the Poison-frontman-turned-"Rock of Love" superstud grew up in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and considers himself a "die-hard" Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Yet, for the past four years, he's called Scottsdale, Arizona, home, which means that, when it comes to this Sunday's Super Bowl — which pits his beloved Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals — he's torn, but not that torn.

"I go black-and-gold, all the way," Michaels told MTV News on Friday (January 30). "I grew up a member of Lambert's Lunatics [a group of fans who worshipped at the altar of the Steelers' punishing middle linebacker Jack Lambert] in the '70s, and remember all the insanity of the old Three Rivers Stadium. It's truly in my blood. But, I have a place in Scottsdale, and there's no doubt that the Cardinals are my NFC team, too. I've hade some great times out here, and they've got great fans."

Having said that, he paused for a second, then added the following caveat:

"Now make sure you put this in the article: I would root for the Cardinals if they were playing any team but the Steelers. So this Sunday, it's going to be Steelers all the way. I am a true, die-hard Steelers fan. They are my only team."

This is clearly very important to Michaels, who says some of his fondest memories were going to Steelers games in Pittsburgh, watching his dad "getting plastered at tailgate parties" and throwing snowballs at opposing players. He has very, er, fond memories of Pittsburgh — and all of Pennsylvania, for that matter.

"Growing up there I had some good times," he said. "I lost my virginity at the Mechanicsburg fish hatchery, so that should tell you the kind of times I'm talking about."

Still, his connection to his new home is very strong.

"Out here, the weather is beautiful. I mean, it's 70 degrees on Christmas Day, and you can't beat that," Michaels laughed. "Here, the worst thing that can happen to you is that you sweat too much before you can get the air conditioning working in your car. And, you know, I love the women in Pittsburgh. Love them. But desert women ... man, they're smoking hot."

But women and weather aside, Michaels can't be swayed from his Steel Curtain loyalties, which is why he's picking the Steelers to beat the Cardinals — 27-24 — in the Super Bowl. He's confident but still a little bit worried. Seems he thinks his team might waltz into the game expecting to roll over the Cards, which is why, as we wrapped up our conversation, he had just one final piece of advice for his beloved black-and-gold.

"The Cardinals are a good team — don't take them lightly. So, here's my advice: Go balls-to-the wall, play the Cards hard and do not underestimate them," he said. "Both teams know each other's tendencies, so it's going to come down to which team is stronger. So, please, Steelers, go out there with guns a-blazin'. And that concludes my drunken coach's corner."

MTV News will be all over the Super Bowl's music and movie highlights — be sure to check in on Sunday!

History has not been kind to the hair-metal era of the late 1980s.

It was a time of leather and strategically ripped denim, of bangles and hoop earrings, of pumping fists and devil horns, of eyeliner and rouge. It was a time when women lusted after men who wore more hairspray, makeup and jewelry than they did. It was a time when Poison, Mötley Crüe, Whitesnake and Warrant ruled the charts, and bands with names like the Bang Tango, Britny Fox, Kix and Faster Pussycat were almost considered cool.

It was a time of glorious cheesiness. It was, to quote a hit of the era, nothin' but a good time.

So it was just a matter of time before somebody made a hair-metal musical, right?

In theory, it sounds awful. And by all rights, it should be. But the hilarious "Rock of Ages" — a new musical that revels in the cheese of the era, tacking a corny plot to anthems of the era by Whitesnake, Journey, Twisted Sister, Poison, Foreigner, Night Ranger and many others — gets it just right by laughing at itself as hard as its audiences do. It's not just your typical cheesy off-Broadway musical. It's your typical cheesy off-Broadway musical on steroids. (Imagine a hair-metal "Mamma Mia.")

It's got mullets, bimbos, spandex, a sleazy club owner and wannabe rockers galore. Not cheesy enough? It's even got "American Idol" castoff Constantine Maroulis in a lead role.

"Let's set the scene," he says. "1987, Sunset Strip, lots of big dreams, lots of big guitars, big hair, stripper poles, naked chicks, really funny characters ... and two dreamers move to L.A. and try to make it big."

The plot centers on (you guessed it) a boy, Drew, and a girl, Sherrie, with dreams of making it big in the music business, moving to Hollywood in the late '80s and working at a rock club on the Sunset Strip (a winking stand-in for the Whisky a Go Go). The two fall for each other, but wait! Starstruck Sherrie has a seedy one-night stand (in the club restroom) with sinister superstar Stacee Jaxx, who then promptly forgets her. Discouraged, she and Drew lose sight of their dreams; she becomes a stripper, he joins a wack rap combo. Then, the club is about to be demolished to make way for condos! All seems lost!

You'll never guess how it plays out.

And in case the plot gets a little too complicated — which is pretty much an impossibility — a narrator is there to help the story along. And he takes his job very seriously.

"The narrator, it's an ancient rock-and-roll device used back in the day to involve the crowd," said Mitchell Jarvis, the mulleted, Jack Black-channeling narrator. "Because a lot of time the music and the lyrics are so complicated that you need that layman's voice."

The plot is so filled with winks that everyone in the house is in on the joke. But what really makes the show, believe it or not, is the music. The extroverted nature of the songs translates beautifully to a Broadway setting, and anyone who doesn't walk out of the theater with respect for the craft of "Here I Go Again" or "Don't Stop Believin' " has no sense of fun. Adding to the ambience, the theater is loaded with concert posters from the era, fake lighters are distributed along with the programs, and — not insignificantly — alcohol is served.

"It's kind of like the anti-Broadway musical," says Will Swenson, who steals the show as Stacee Jaxx. "It's super-interactive with the crowd, people are ordering drinks and singing along with the songs."

"What we've done is taken those '80s bands and theatricalized them and put them into a musical with a really big plot," says Kelli Barrett, who plays Sherrie. "Rock and roll for us is the priority. It's a light show, we've got the hazer fog, and we've got an amazing band."

For those reasons and many others, "Rock of Ages" works much better than it should. As Jarvis says, "The magic happens when I put this mullet on and go out there and do my thing."

Since news of Quiet Riot singer Kevin DuBrow's death broke this week, there has been an outpouring of memories of the fallen rocker from the band's fans, as well as from musicians and friends who worked closely with the outspoken frontman.

DuBrow was found dead at age 52 inside his Las Vegas home Sunday evening; an official cause of his death has yet to be determined, pending autopsy and toxicology results. According to police, there were no signs of forced entry at DuBrow's home, and investigators do not suspect foul play.

"Today is a sad day," Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx told SavioursofRock.com. "I was thinking about sitting in Kevin's apartment in 1979. I had just been over to [late Quiet Riot/ Ozzy Osbourne guitarist] Randy Rhoads' learning some of their songs. Randy called Kevin while I was there and told him they should get me to be the bass player in Quiet Riot. I passed ... 'cause we all had a destiny. [Kevin] always did what he loved most — music — and always said what was on his mind. And that is the measure of a man. He will be missed. I'm grateful to have those early memories ... before the fame, just kids with dreams."

Poison drummer Rikki Rockett first met DuBrow 20 years ago, and the two formed an immediate friendship. Rather than focus on his personal memories, Rockett's statement on his Web site hailed the singer's contributions to the heavy-metal realm.

"Quiet Riot put metal on the radio in the early '80s, in spite of the vanilla new-wave surge of Duran Duran clones at the time," Rockett recalled. "However he died or why, let's just remember the colossal contributions that he made. Rest in peace, my brother."

Glenn Hughes, the vocalist and bassist best known for his contributions to Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, told MelodicRock.com that he and DuBrow "were [like] brothers" who spoke on a daily basis.

"The Kevin that I knew was a beautiful human being," Hughes continued. "He was kind, giving, nurturing and generous. He would stay at my L.A. home when he was in town. I never saw Kevin loaded. He respected my sobriety. He always spoke about the change of my lifestyle and how he also wanted to change his. The last conversation I had with him 10 days ago was about this subject; he said he had to make some life changes. I was so happy and elated to hear this."

Hughes said the last time he spoke to DuBrow was November 16, when the two friends discussed travel arrangements for a party Hughes was having November 23.

"Then, there was nothing. No communication. Zero," Hughes said. "Come Thanksgiving, I knew something was strange. At the house, Kevin's room was prepared as always. I thought, 'He's [going to] come jumping through the door any minute and demand to play the winner of the pool game between [Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer] Chad Smith and myself.' As the party ended, Gabi [Hughes' wife] and I spoke of his absence. She was very upset. All along, I felt something [was] seriously wrong."

On Sunday, Hughes — who performed a guest vocal spot on Quiet Riot's last studio offering, 2006's Rehab — said he called DuBrow's ex-girlfriend, who had no information concerning the singer's whereabouts. "I asked her if she knew a paramedic who could go over to Kev's house and investigate," Hughes wrote in his statement. "Dana, the medic, got in the house only to find my sweet brother at peace. I am completely shell-shocked. We were planning to go to Hawaii for some relaxation in the new year. For those of you that didn't know him, he was a true, true friend. I'm going to miss our dinners at the Palm in Beverly Hills. I'm going to miss his loud voice bellowing through my house. I'm going to miss those oh-so-corny jokes. We all will miss him. Sleep well, brother. Your legacy is in good hands with me."

Former Warrant guitarist Billy Morris, who'd played guitar with Quiet Riot occasionally during the band's later years, issued a statement to the Cleveland Scene, in which he expressed utter disbelief at DuBrow's passing.

"This blows me away," Morris wrote. "No one would ever imagine this happening to Kevin, especially me, after knowing him for the past eight years. During our tours together, he would really take care of himself, eating well (certainly better than the rest of us). He'd take his vitamins every day, and always kept his body and voice in check. One thing about Kevin was that he was always so thankful for what he had. Performing live and creating music were his passions, and he was grateful for the time he spent with his friends and fans. The rock scene has lost an icon, an individual who brought it every night."

Annihilator's Jeff Waters also chimed in on his own site, discussing DuBrow's impact on the musical genre he'd lived for.

"Quiet Riot had an impact on me when I was a teen, and when I wasn't listening to their music, I was playing it or seeing a cover band that was playing it," he explained. "Their music was rock and metal and party music all in one. It is a sad day for metal, as DuBrow and Quiet Riot helped, in their own way, make metal what it has become today. You will be missed by many, and thanks for the memories and the music."

But no one knew DuBrow like his bandmates, many of whom broke their silence Monday night in online postings.

"I really don't know where to start," wrote guitarist Alex Grossi on his site. "Kevin was a beautiful soul, and I feel more than fortunate to have known, worked and learned from him. Kevin was always a positive influence in what sometimes can be a very negative business. I am proud to have called him my friend, and always will be. [He] was a true lover of music and was extremely dedicated to his craft. I am honored to have been part of a band that changed the face of hard rock forever and to have been given the opportunity to play, write, and most importantly, be part of his life. He will be forever missed."

Bassist Chuck Wright told MelodicRock.com that he's "shocked and devastated" by DuBrow's death and feels he's "truly lost a brother" in the singer.

"It's a very sad loss for the world of rock and roll," Wright said. "I'm so very fortunate to have been a part of his life these past 26 years. I have so many fond memories, and it's a blessing that these recent few years have been so great with the band. There is no reason to say, 'I wish we could have ...' [because] we did. I still can't believe I won't be sharing the stage with his larger-than-life presence ever again. The man left a mark wherever he went, and I'm heartbroken that he is no longer with us."

On MTV's Headbangers Blog, former Quiet Riot bassist Rudy Sarzo said that he, too, was shocked by the news. "The last thing you expect when you get up in the morning is something like this," he said. "He was somebody who really loved life. He loved to have fun and have a great time. Every day to him was like a party — that's what it was like when I played with him. I think he'll be remembered for being a hell of a rock singer. He was definitely one of the best singers of the '80s."

In a statement to CNN, drummer Frankie Banali said he'd "lost [his] best friend," and said that, "out of respect for both Kevin and his family," he wouldn't comment further on the situation. "There's going to be a lot of speculation out there, and I won't add to that. I love him too much."

Fans reached out to MTV News with their thoughts on the passing of a musical icon.

"Kevin ... was very rich in the way people loved him as a lead man in a rock band," said Twig, a 31-year-old fan from Greensboro, North Carolina. "That, my friend, is worth more than anything. We will always remember that crazy guy onstage that gave you what you paid for — a good time."

"I will never forget the first time I heard Quiet Riot," offered John from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. "I was like, 'What is this?' It was the door opening for heavy metal and me. So sorry to the family and friends of Kevin. I will forever 'Feel the Noize.' "

"One of the greatest voices in metal has been silenced, [and] I will miss him," said Robert of Springfield, Illinois. "I am glad I got to see him live within the past five years. He was as great then as he was in [his] prime."

"This guy had more talent in his wig than Britney Spears has in her whole body," said Sydney from Redwood City, California. "Godspeed, Kevin. Bang your head eternally with the good ones."

"I feel as if I lost an old friend," said Johnny, 38, of Austin, Texas. "It's kind of like we grew up together, as music and songs remind us of our teen years. ... Take it easy, Kevin, and thanks for the music and energy you shared through your voice."

"Kevin's passing makes for quite an impact," said Gypsy from Tacoma, Washington. "The metal world will never be the same without him."

Should Kidz Beware of Dog?: All five DMX albums have debuted atop the Billboard albums chart, making the gravelly voiced rapper the Grand Champ of rap (as he titled his last LP). But while he edged past A Perfect Circle and Erykah Badu the last time around, he's locking horns with a wave of pint-sized pests for his latest effort, Year of the Dog, Again.

With four cuts spruced up by Swizz Beatz — plus one produced by Scott Storch ("Give 'Em What They Want") and an intro cut with Dame Grease — X also beckoned Busta Rhymes for "Come Thru (Move)," Jadakiss and Styles P. for "It's Personal," and Amerie for "Dog Love." Janyce also appears on the latter track, but she's not the only fresh Bloodline artist on the album, with Bzr Royale and Jinx also representing X's label.

DMX has some worthy teammates in his corner, but could he be toppled by a krew of karaoke-krazed kiddies? That's what indie label Razor & Tie is hoping for the 10th installment of its most successful venture ever, Kidz Bop. Being released barely five months after the latest entry, this one has the buggers brushing up Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You," Pussycat Dolls' "Stickwitu" and Nickelback's "Savin' Me" over the course of its 18 tracks.

But if the kids want to pick on competitors their own size, they've chosen the right week to bop heads. The Doodlebops — who have a TV show on Playhouse Disney and made their live debut at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus — have sketched out two DVDs and a CD for release this week, immortalizing such gems as "Wobbly Whoopsy," "Gibble Gobble," "Cauliflower" and "I Want to Be Bigger."

And there's yet another juvenile in the mix: Rachel Piña Trachtenburg, the 12-year-old brainchild (of sorts) who tours with her parents as the nomadic Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. The "Off & On Broadway" DVD captures day-in-the-life and performance footage from the group, which crafts songs out of old slides they find at random yard sales.

Spider Men: On a related note, garage pop-punkers the Pink Spiders are a little older than the aforementioned competitors, but they're fighting wrinkles with their major-label debut, Teenage Graffiti. The "You Hear It First" artists — who recently played a show at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium after a ballgame — worked with ex-Cars frontman/ Weezer production guru Ric Ocasek and pre-eminent mixer Tom Lord-Alge for the effort, which features "Saturday Nite Riot," "Little Razorblade" and "Pretend That This Is Fiction."

And Now for Something Completely Brutal: This week's remaining heavyweights will have kids, dawgs and insects alike ducking for cover. First up is Stone Sour, the Slipknot ancillary affair that puckers up with its first studio release in four years. The band's hoping for more Grammy nominations with Come What(ever) May, which features the first single "Through Glass," plus "30/30-150," "Reborn" and "Zzyzx Road."

Powerman 5000 have also been away for a while — about three years and two months — but with a new lineup and label, a rebirth could re-energize their fanbase. With guitarists Adam 12 and M.33 being replaced by former Alien Ant Farm-er Terry Corso and Johnny Heatley (Half Cocked), Spider One and the gang will surely deafen the Pink Spiders with Destroy What You Enjoy, which features "Return to the City of the Dead," "Murder" and "All My Friends Are Ghosts."

Also on the metal front, Ice-T is strapping on his armor again for Murder 4 Hire, the first album by his revived Body Count in almost a decade. T also revives his feud with the fuzz on "Invincible Gangsta," the leadoff track that features the phrase "F--- the Cops," but he also has a few things to say about "The Passion of Christ," "Dirty Bombs" and "Relationships."

Chicago's Kill Hannah keep up the violence with their Atlantic record Until There's Nothing Left of Us and the tracks "Black Poison Blood" and "Love You to Death," and if you're up for even more gore, don't miss Ollabelle's Riverside Battle Songs — which was crafted by Amy Helm, daughter of drum legend Levon Helm — the American Black Lung's ... And They Rode Their Weapons Into War and Towers of London's Blood Sweat & Towers.

Seeming violent but much more tame are Five for Fighting, which is actually just one dude: John Ondrasik. His Two Lights has already drawn some VH1 attention with "The Riddle," and while FFF are best remembered for the post-9/11 staple "Superman (It's Not Easy)" (which was actually written before those events), Ondrasik has a few things to say about the state of the nation on "Freedom Never Cries" and "Johnny America."

Song Title of the Week:

"George Romero Will Be at Our Wedding" from Showbread's Art of Reptiles

Other Notables:

Various artists' Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited: Serge Gainsbourg is name-dropped left and right these days, but to many Americans, that's all he is: just a name. Michael Stipe, Franz Ferdinand, Cat Power and others are trying to change all that with this collection of reworked songs by the French neoclassical musician. Placebo, Tricky, the Rakes, the Kills and Marianne Faithfull also chime in on the disc, which has already been released overseas.

Poison vs. Journey reissues: The '80s titans go head-to-head this week with three and five revitalized albums, respectively. Poison's first three multiplatinum records — Flesh & Blood, Look What the Cat Dragged In and Open Up and Say ... Ahh! — arrive in 20th anniversary packages, with unreleased and rare bonus tracks. In the other corner, Journey's Departure, Escape and Greatest Hits also come with bonuses, while Infinity and Evolution are straight reissues.

TRS-80's Mystery Crash: The Chicago electro-rockers have been cranking out music for nearly 10 years — and hopping from label to label ever since — but they're hoping their music will get recognized beyond fleeting appearances in Coca-Cola and Nike commercials. The bandmembers — some of whom have been friends since high school — have also created tunes for NPR's "This American Life" and seen their songs used in "CSI."

Deborah Gibson, C.C. DeVille Lend Authenticity To '80s 'Rock' Premiere

HOLLYWOOD — It was the typical Hollywood club scene at the Vanguard on Saturday as supermodels gushed over Warrant's Jani Lane; Debbie Gibson and C.C. DeVille joked about rumors they were wed; and Don Dokken and Jack Blades posed for the paparazzi.

Typical, of course, if it were the '80s. Which was perfect, since the top shelf of "Where are they now?" talent was on hand for the premiere of "Rock of Ages," a musical set on the Sunset Strip in 1986.

"This is incredible," said guitarist Tommy Shaw of Styx, whose "Renegade" is one of several dozen hair-metal songs featured in the production. "Our music has somehow survived everything we've ever done. It's become part of the public fabric. For them to be using it in a musical, it's surreal to me. I've seen this happen over time with other music, but it's a first for me. All of our fans have grown up and they've gotten into positions where they can do something like this."

"Rock of Ages" is the brainchild of exactly that: metal fans like director Kristin Hanggi ("Pussycat Dolls: Live at the Roxy"), writer Chris D'Arienzo ("Barry Munday"), co-producer Marcos Siega (a music video director) and co-executive producer Janet Billig Rich (Nirvana's former manager).

"The appeal [in making the musical] is totally how much fun it is," said Laura Bell Bundy, the Broadway veteran ("Wicked," "Hairspray") who stars as Sherrie Christian, a Midwestern girl who comes to Hollywood to become an actress, only to get used by a metal god and end up working as a stripper. "Everything was all about looking good, being glamorous and like having long hair and rocking hard. And this show, it really stays true to the era. And in a way it kind of lets you make fun of it, but in a way of loving it and respecting it at the same time."

Like Metal Skool, the hair-metal tribute band that's been playing the Strip for the past five years, "Rock of Ages" honors the era but pokes fun just the same.

"It should [poke fun]!" DeVille said. "Listen, if you look back, I was always winkin' at the audience. In other words, I knew that to be cool, to wear makeup, you'd have to like, not shave. I mean, it was always an inside joke."

"Every generation has its goofy guys," Night Ranger singer Blades added. "So what does it matter? If you can't laugh at yourself or with yourself, then what do you care?"

Dokken, on the other hand, was a little worried as he walked into the Vanguard's doors.

"I went and checked out Metal Skool and I can understand the parody, but the movie 'Rock Star,' I thought, 'Somebody got a lot of bad information,' " the Dokken singer said. "The whole thing was so fantasmically wrong. I mean, when the wives get in the limousine and they follow the tour bus and the groupies go on the tour bus — I've been around the world a million times and that never went down."

There are no wives in limos in "Rock of Ages," but there is plenty of groupie love and, well, stripper love. Bundy's strip club scenes even extend into the audience, one of many ways the show involves the crowd (for example, lighters are handed out at the door for ballads).

"The music involved the audience when it was happening, so the whole idea is you have to involve the audience now," explained former "Singled Out" host Chris Hardwick, who plays Stacee Jaxx, the rock god who returns to club Rock of Ages for its final show before being bought out by a German conglomerate.

Along with Bundy and Hardwick, "Rock of Ages" also stars another familiar face: Kyle Gass from Tenacious D.

"I play the club owner, Dennis Dupree, a very benevolent, kind owner, so it's obviously not like real life, because most of 'em, let's face it, are a little dicier," Gass said. "[Rock] is my favorite music, and although the hair-metal music of the '80s might not be my very favorite, the way we use it in the show is pretty fun."

In one of the musical's most memorable scenes, Gass shares a heartbreaking duet of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" with his trusty soundman, played by Dan Finnerty of the Dan Band (famous for his rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in "Old School").

"I didn't [know him before], so I immediately didn't like him at first ... but he's really funny," Gass said. "We've become pretty good pals."

Along with a flock of '80s rockers, Saturday's premiere also brought out Perry Farrell and Tom Morello and actors like Dax Shepard, Michael Rosenbaum and Mark Ruffalo. It was the blasts from the past, however, that had the red carpet buzzing. ("Oh my God! Is that Toni Basil?")

"I think pop and theater have now almost melded in a way, because you want songs that you leave a theater humming, and I think the '80s was the decade of catchy songs, so it makes perfect sense to me," said Deborah (formerly Debbie) Gibson, '80s-pop-star-turned-Broadway-actress. "I'm only offended they didn't ask for one of my songs."

"Rock of Ages" continues at the Vanguard Theatre through February 18, with shows Thursdays at 8 p.m., Fridays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. Producers expect the show to move to Las Vegas in the spring.

Poison singer Bret Michaels escaped serious injury Monday night when his tour bus was fired at in a drive-by shooting. Michaels was in Chicopee, Massachusetts, to perform at an invitation-only acoustic show at the Rumble Seat Bar and Grille and was sitting on his tour bus prior to the gig when a shot was fired from a white Ford F-150, according to a statement from his spokesperson.

The singer was struck in the face by broken glass, but was not seriously injured in the incident. "It is going to take more then a cowardice act like this to make me stop performing or stop my tour," Michaels said in a statement. "I plan on staying out and finishing the shows as scheduled. I want to thank all of my fans in the Chicopee area for staying out last night, and I will be back. Hopefully, with the help of many people, we will catch the person who did this and they will be brought to justice."

Though Michaels' camp said police don't feel the drive-by was a random event because the shot was fired into the living quarters at the rear of the tour bus, Captain William Jebb of the Chicopee Police Department said Wednesday there is no indication that Michaels was specifically targeted. "We don't have a suspect at this time, and we think it was probably just an act of vandalism," Jebb said. "We don't think he was targeted. From the many witnesses we interviewed on the scene, it seemed like it was just a motorist driving by."

Jebb said the investigation is ongoing but there are no suspects at this time. While police were downplaying the seriousness of the incident, Michaels' management said this is not the first time the singer has been targeted. According to his reps, Michaels has been the subject of "numerous death threats investigated by the FBI," including one from a person who fired bullets through photos of the singer and mailed them to him along with threatening notes to arenas in which Michaels was scheduled to perform. That person reportedly lives somewhere in the Northeastern United States.

Michaels is due to continue touring, playing a show at Annie's in Cincinnati on Wednesday (November 23) and at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, on Thanksgiving.

A reward has been announced for any information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in the incident. Information can be given directly to the Chicopee Police Department at (413) 592-6341, or tips can be submitted via Michaels' Web site, www.bretmichaels.com.

Kiss Summer Tour: No Ace, No Peter — But The Opening Act Is Poison

Sirens will blare, fake blood will mingle with greasepaint and flames will lick the sky again — yep, Kiss are coming back for yet another summer tour of North America.

The last time they trekked across this continent, Kiss were opening for Aerosmith. This go-round, they'll drag along '80s glam-metal band Poison, which ensures Kiss headlining status.

"Throughout our entire career, we have been headlining, but I look at the opportunity to go on the road with Kiss as a complete honor," said Poison singer Bret Michaels. "Poison's set will be nothing but hits — a balls-to-the-wall, all-thriller-no-filler stage show."

The tour will launch June 6 in Selma, Texas, and will wrap up on August 4 in Atlanta.

Kiss will perform on a new stage set and will play many rarely performed songs along with tried-and-true hits like "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Detroit Rock City" and "God of Thunder." The tour is being sponsored by VH1 Classic and is called Rock the Nation.

When they opened for Aerosmith last summer, Kiss played without original guitarist Ace Frehley, who was replaced by longtime songwriting contributor Tommy Thayer. This time, they'll also be without founding drummer Peter Criss, whose contract with the band was not renewed. In an interview with Kiss merchandise designer Christopher Franchi for Kiss Kollector magazine, Simmons blamed Criss' absence on a bad attitude. "During the entire Aerosmith/ Kiss tour, Peter kept saying to the band while we were putting on makeup, and I quote, 'I've had enough of this sh--. I've got enough money, I have a great house and a great wife. I don't want to do this anymore.' "

Simmons added that the road was taking a physical toll on the then 55-year-old drummer, who admitted to his bandmates that his energy level was "very low." "He would sleep until one or two in the afternoon on days off," Simmons said. "And he had to put his elbow into ice water to relieve aches and pains."

Criss will be replaced by Eric Singer, who served as Kiss' drummer during the early '90s until the original lineup reformed in 1996.

In a post earlier this month on his Web site, Criss defended himself by writing, "I sang and drummed my heart out on the Aerosmith tour. The real fans know that. End of story. And I also missed Ace on the tour."

The drummer also said that he's now recognizing the advantages of not being on tour. "I have never been so happy in my whole life," he wrote. "I can finally be free to be an artist again. I am in excellent health, wealthy and working on being wiser. The original band is over. And as a founding member I am not shocked at Gene and Paul turning a legendary band into a cover act for just plain profit. How very sad."

Kiss will begin a tour of Australia and Japan on May 8 in Perth, Australia; the last date is June 3 in Kanazawa, Japan. While Kiss continue to play shows, Criss will write new material for an upcoming album that may also feature older songs from his archives.
