They say that New Year's Eve brings together strange bedfellows, and that could well be the tagline for a special December 31 concert at a New York City nightclub featuring singer-songwriter Paula Cole and hip-hop impresarios The Roots.
Paula Cole and The Roots will team up for a special double bill at the Life club in Manhattan, with Cole scheduled to deliver a pair of sets counting down to the new year, beginning at 8 p.m. The Roots aren't scheduled to hit the stage until the early morning of the year 2000, as the group's set isn't expected to start until 3 a.m.
DJing the event will be Grandmaster Flash, Funkmaster Flex, and Kid Capri, all of whom will spin records between sets as well as in separate rooms off of the main performance space.
The Roots had originally planned to play Radio City Music Hall with Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, but opted for a more intimate show that would allow them to indulge in some spontaneous, lengthy jams (see "The Roots Pass On Radio City For Small Club Gig On New Year's Eve").
As with all things Y2K related, tickets for the Paula Cole-Roots show will be rather pricey, ranging from $125 to upwards of $350, depending on how many of the performances you want to attend. Advance tickets for the concert are on sale via Ticketmaster.

-- David Basham

Devoted fans of the WB series "Dawson's Creek" are getting a chance to visit the burg where the show is filmed and take in a concert featuring acts familiar from the show's soundtrack.
Six hundred contest winners will be flown to the show's real-life location of Wilmington, North Carolina next month to take in performances by Paula Cole, Shawn Mullins, Wood, and Tal Bachman at a private show to take place on November 13.
The contest is being sponsored by Ford Focus, which will be running commercials during the remainder of the month providing viewers with the skinny on the various ways to enter. Those 600 fans with fate on their side will be sent to the gig, which will be hosted by members of the show's cast.
Cole is perhaps the most inextricably connected artist to the soapy teen series, as her "I Don't Want To Wait" has served time as the show's theme; she appeared on the "Songs From 'Dawson's Creek'" soundtrack along with Mullins and Wood.
Bachman ("She's So High")

Smashing Pumpkins, Paula Cole, Marcy Playground, and Fastball have been added to a H.O.R.D.E. festival line-up that already includes Blues Traveler, Ben Harper, Alana Davis and others.

With Lollapalooza out of commission this summer, H.O.R.D.E. founder John Popper had more room to maneuver in signing on bands for this summer's outing. The Blues Traveler frontman seems to have followed the trend that he began last summer when his festival moved away from the earthy love-in it had been to more of a straight ahead alternative showcase with acts like Beck, Soul Coughing, Ben Folds Five and others on board.

This year's tour gets underway on July 9 at River's Edge in Somerset, Wisconsin and wraps up on September 5 in Portland, Oregon.

Blues Traveler will be joined for at least five July dates by Smashing Pumpkins, and later in the tour by Paula Cole for a three week stretch. Fastball will hop on the tour sometime in August. H.O.R.D.E.'s main stage will also
feature singer/songwriter Ben Harper, Canadian favorites Barenaked Ladies, and jazz-influenced vocalist Alana Davis.

The tour's second stage will feature turns by Marcy Playground, Robert Bradley's Backwater Surprise, and Chris Stills, son of 60s songwriter Stephen Stills. David Garza, Fiji Mariners, Emmet Swimming, Agents Of Good Roots, and Getaway People will also be among the acts playing the tour's second stage.

Tickets go on sale Friday for a show in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and on Saturday tickets will be available for shows in Oklahoma City; Noblesville, Indiana; Clarkston, Michigan; Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Burgettstown, Pennsylvania; Canadaigua, New York; and Boston.

Here's where the H.O.R.D.E. tour will be stopping this year:

7/9 - Somerset, WI @ River's Edge
7/10 - East Troy, WI @ Alpine Valley
7/11 - Tinley Park, IL @ The World
7/12 - Maryland Heights, OH @ Riverport Amph.
7/14 - Bonner
