On Wednesday, No Doubt filed a lawsuit against Activision, the publishers of "Band Hero," claiming they've been transformed "into a virtual karaoke circus act" in the new game, which allows avatars of Gwen Stefani and company to perform songs popularized by other acts.

In the suit, the band alleges that Activision exceeded the contractually approved use of the group's avatars. No Doubt contend that their contract with the video game publisher allowed for the use of their music and likenesses in "no more than three" of their own songs, but that, in the final version of "Band Hero," those likenesses are used in more than 60 songs, "Many of which include lyrics ... which are not appropriate for No Doubt and would not have been chosen by No Doubt for recordings or public performances."

In particular, the suit notes that through the use of the "Band Hero" Character Manipulation feature, No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani can be made to sing the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" — which they contend is "an unauthorized performance by the Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes" — and bassist Tony Kanal's avatar can be made to sing ND's "Just a Girl" in a female voice.

"Activision has deceived and confused the public into believing that No Doubt authorized the use of its name and likeness for the Character Manipulation feature of 'Band Hero,' " the suit reads. "And that No Doubt approves and endorses the appearance of its members individually performing songs that are wholly inappropriate and out of character for No Doubt."

Not surprisingly, Activision begged to differ with those claims. In a statement released to MTV News on Thursday morning (November 5), the publisher maintained that it had worked closely with No Doubt and their management in development of the "Band Hero" game and that there is a written agreement that allows for the use of their likenesses in it.

"Some of the world's most popular and iconic artists have been featured in 'Guitar Hero' as playable characters, and we are proud to count No Doubt among them. Activision has a written agreement to use No Doubt in 'Band Hero,' an agreement signed by No Doubt after extensive negotiations with its representatives, who collectively have decades of experience in the entertainment industry," the statement read. "Pursuant to that agreement, Activision worked with No Doubt and the band's management in developing 'Band Hero.' As a result, Activision believes it is within its legal rights with respect to the use and portrayal of the bandmembers in the game and that this lawsuit is without merit. Activision is exploring its own legal options with respect to No Doubt's obligations under the agreement."

Activision made similar claims earlier this year after Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and his former Nirvana bandmates objected to the use of his likeness in the company's "Guitar Hero 5" game. Love maintained that she had never signed off on any usage and threatened to "sue the sh-- out of Activision" for breach of contract.

After spending their summer opening for No Doubt in 15,000-seat amphitheaters and massive hockey arenas, Paramore pledged to go "smaller" on the headlining tour in support of their forthcoming Brand New Eyes album.

"We haven't hashed it all out yet, but it will be smaller, due to the fact that the tour we're doing right now is so large and, like, ticket prices are on a whole new level ... everything is a whole new level for us," frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News. "And we love it, but we want to do something that's really intimate and that our fans can be right up there and don't have to break their banks [for tickets]. It will just be really fun. I'm stoked."

And, it looks like they're making good on that promise.

On Wednesday (August 12), Paramore announced the dates and (decidedly small — for them, at least) venues for that tour, which kicks off on September 29 — the same day Brand New Eyes hits stores — in Pomona, California, and will crisscross the continent for a month before wrapping with a November 1 homecoming gig in Nashville. Fueled by Ramen labelmates the Swellers and fellow Nashville act Paper Route will serve as the opening acts.

Special pre-sale tickets go on sale Monday, with remaining ducats going on sale to the general public on August 21 and 22. For more information, check out the band's official site, Paramore.net.

Gwen Stefani Admits There's 'A Little Bit' Of Tension In No Doubt

When No Doubt emerged on the scene in the '90s, the buzz was that the guys — Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont — resented their sexy and sassy lead singer, Gwen Stefani, for getting all the attention in the group. They addressed the issues in their video for "Don't Speak."

Nearly 15 years later, Stefani admitted that those old tensions might still exist in the reunited band.

"Everybody's making it like there's all this new tension, you know, like I stepped away from the band and now they're jealous of me," Stefani said in the July issue of Elle, featuring other women in music like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. "And look, maybe there is a little bit of that."

Although she's ready to get back to work with the band, she didn't mind playing the Britney Spears-like pop star for a while on her two solo discs. "I just did the circuit. You write with all the same people Christina Aguilera writes with," she said. "And the music's very programmed and done in this very patchwork way. But it was so fun. I felt like I was playing a character."

Stefani said her priorities have changed drastically since No Doubt released their last studio album, Rock Steady, in 2001. "I wasn't even married. Now, I'm a wife and a mother of two. It's a really different role," she said. "I always referred to No Doubt as a marriage, because that's what it's like to be together for so long and go through what we've been through."

Even with two kids and a rock-star husband, Gavin Rossdale, No Doubt are still important to her, but they're no longer her whole life. "I can't really have that relationship with them anymore," she explained. "My priorities are always going to be my husband and my family now. That's a huge, huge thing."

That doesn't mean she's quitting the biz to pursue family life full time. She's just waiting for inspiration to settle in. "I just feel very in between at the moment," she said about songwriting. "Like in my cocoon waiting to blossom. ... I'm so screwed. I might never be able to write another song. ... I want so badly to write a record. I want to make every other songwriter jealous. But it's just not happening right now."

Are Paramore The New No Doubt?

Sure, they both have female lead singers, but the similarities go deeper, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

I'm about to make a fairly simple comparison seem unnecessarily complex, but the situation demands it (also, that's what I do). So here it goes: Paramore are the new No Doubt.

The reason I am getting complicated here is because, well, to do this any other way would be lazy, not to mention a tad bit insulting. Of course, there's one glaring similarity between both bands: the dynamic, iconic frontwoman who also doubles as the media focal point. In essence, Hayley Williams and Gwen Stefani are covered the same and contextualized the same (can't wait for Hayley's '80s-tinged solo album!), so let's get that out of the way right off the bat. Yes, they're both pretty girls with dye jobs who are showing the guys how it's done (blech) and are frequently moved to the front during photo shoots.

Let's move on, because the similarities between Paramore and No Doubt go a lot deeper than that.

Both released debut albums that didn't exactly set the world on fire but hinted at things to come: No Doubt's self-titled 1992 debut was full of breezy ska-tinged pop that seemed out of step with the gnarled grunge that gripped the charts at the time. Paramore's All We Know Is Falling was packed with wailers like "Emergency" and "Pressure" — tunes that bristled not just with punky energy, but Williams' unique (read: feminine) take on love and relationships — but fans were too enamored with Pete Wentz's Sidekick pics and My Chemical Romance's theatrics to care much. In the case of both acts, things would change with the next album, for reasons not abundantly clear to anyone.

Because neither No Doubt nor Paramore changed things up that drastically on their breakthrough efforts, it just seemed that the industry finally caught up with them. Tragic Kingdom was massive. It sold more than 16 million copies worldwide and put Stefani (and the relationships she sung about on songs like "Don't Speak") front and center. Riot! has only gone platinum, but the effect it had on Williams — and the relationships she wrote about on tunes like "CrushCrushCrush" — was exactly the same.

And, of course, that brings up another similarity between the two bands: the specter of failed intra-band relationships (and, by logical extension, the media's hyper-focus on them). If you don't know that Stefani and ND bassist Tony Kanal dated, well, then you haven't read a single article about the group or listened to roughly one-third of their catalog. And during the frenzy that accompanied Riot!, it became quite popular to hypothesize that Williams and guitarist Josh Farro were an item, with many taking it one step further and assuming that their breakup was the reason Paramore nearly split last year. For the record, Williams nor Farro have ever commented on the rumors, but the attention remains.

And here's where I take the next logical step: Having broken through to the mainstream and dealt with everything that comes with it — the whirlwind tours, the media attention, the prying into all things personal — Paramore are now steeling themselves to do it all again, putting the past behind them and applying the finishing touches to their new album ... which could quite possibly end up being their Return of Saturn.

For those of you who don't remember — which is probably a lot of you — Saturn was No Doubt's follow-up to the impossible-to-follow Tragic Kingdom. Its recording process was legendarily tumultuous, with ND battling each other and their label, Interscope. Songs were recorded, scrapped and then recorded all over again. Production stopped and stalled. Stefani wrestled with doubts about her songwriting ability (hey, sounds like something Williams told us recently). The result was an album full of deeply personal ballads about failed loves and bathing in bathwater that confused a large portion of No Doubt's fans.

From what we know about Paramore's still-untitled new album, the Saturn comparisons seem strangely apt. They carried the same baggage and expectations into the studio. There's been writing in fits and starts and intra-band drama, and Williams is grappling with the same doubts. And when I visited the band at Rob Cavallo's studio last month, I got the chance to hear six of the new songs, and let's just say they've slowed it down a bit on a couple of them. (Don't jump off the ledge quite yet, Paramore loyalists — there's still plenty of classic snarl to be heard too.)

Will the new Paramore album be their Return of Saturn? Who knows? But the signs are pointing to "yes." Which might be why No Doubt are taking Paramore out on the road with them this summer (their tour kicked off Tuesday night in Fresno, California). Perhaps Gwen and Tony will have a nice long chat with Hayley and Josh, while the other dudes just sort of do what the other dudes in bands do. Maybe there will be an official passing of the torch. It would make sense. After all, these two bands have a history. They just might not realize it.

Less than a week after appearing live on "American Idol," No Doubt paid a visit on Monday night to the kids on "Gossip Girl."

But Gwen Stefani and her band didn't play for any of the students at Constance Billard or St. Jude's. Instead, the California rockers took part in a flashback episode featuring a young version of Lily van der Woodsen, the mother of rich girl Serena (Blake Lively).

That plot twist meant Leighton Meester didn't get to catch No Doubt in character as queen bee Blair Waldorf, nor while she was just hanging out on set. In fact, for a while, Meester wasn't even aware the band was making a "GG" cameo appearance.

"You wanna know something?" Meester told MTV News while on the set of the music video for her collaboration with Cobra Starship. "I didn't even get to see No Doubt, and I didn't even know that they were gonna be on. Somebody told me that they were coming on my show. And they performed in L.A. while I was working in New York. That's what happened!"

On Monday night's episode, No Doubt appeared as an '80s band called Snowed Out, who performed for young Lily and friends at a club in Los Angeles. The episode has been positioned as a possible pilot episode for a "GG" spinoff. No Doubt's cameo has been part of a re-emergence for the band after several years on the sideline. They're set to begin a North American tour later this month.

So while Meester was disappointed that she didn't get to check out No Doubt on set, she'll certainly have the opportunity to take in Stefani's band at some point in the future.

"I love her," Meester said. "And I love No Doubt. That was one of the first albums I had, and I still know every word. I think she's awesome, and the music they make is great. I really love that style, too, because it's a woman singing, and it's not totally pop. It's really fun and very strong and cool."

It's ironic that a reunited No Doubt performed their 1995 breakthrough hit, "Just a Girl," on American Idol" Wednesday night, when the season's only remaining female contestant, Allison Iraheta, could have used a bit of that girl power to avoid exiting the "Idol" stage.

It was the first time the group — which officially kicks off a reunion tour on May 16 with a show in Las Vegas — had ever appeared on the show, though singer Gwen Stefani is no stranger to "Idol." She visited in 2007 to mentor the finalists and was joined by Akon to perform her solo hit "The Sweet Escape."

This time, though, she brought along longtime bandmates bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young, not to mention a bit of the punky attitude that helped them become pop superstars in the late 1990s. After spending more than five years working alone, Stefani changed gears from the club pop of her two solo efforts to a more rocking mode for the performance, which kicked off with her creeping down the center stage steps in some of her classic ND gear.

Trading the flashy couture of her solo days for basic black boots, black pants, a white tank, neon-green bra and a studded leather belt, Stefani was back in tough girl mode. She postured her way across the stage as Kanal and Dumont pogoed to the song's incessant ska rhythm. Though she sometimes sounded a bit out of breath, Stefani easily slipped back into the herky-jerky vocal cadences of the song.

Punching the air and bouncing around, Stefani nearly wiped out mid-song when she leaped off the main stage and ran toward the judge's table to get closer to the crowd. Once there, flanked by Kanal and Dumont, she dropped down and did five push-ups as the band vamped. She then adlibbed a shout out to her female fans. "Where are my girls at?" she said, hunched over and peering out into the audience, which broke out into a high-pitched squeal and engaged her in some call-and-response to the "I'm just a girl" refrain.

"I'm just a girl at 'American Idol'/ Because that's all that you'll let me be!" she yelled, before leaping off the riser once more and pushing her way through the crowd to get back to the main stage. Energized, but clearly a bit drained, the mother of two hugged host Ryan Seacrest after the song, as flamboyant drummer Young emerged from behind his kit to reveal his black and white striped leggings, a pink tutu and a black lipstick smear across his lips.

Seacrest asked Stefani to explain why the group is touring for the first time in more than five years without an album to promote. "My fault, my fault, my fault," she said. "I had all the babies and all that and then I was home. ... I just said let's just go on tour. I don't want to be home writing. I just want to get out there, see everybody, get inspired and kind of do it backwards." She clarified that the whole point of the tour is to get inspired to write a new album, which is tentatively due in 2010.

The No Doubt reunion tour is finally on. With a pair of high-energy shows — Saturday at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and a Sunday night headlining slot at the Bamboozle Festival — the O.C. hitmakers officially returned to the road.

Though their summer tour with Paramore doesn't kick off until May 16 in Fresno, California, the guys (and gal) are already getting their tour legs back. Since they're bringing their families on the road with them this time around, that means getting used to doing things a little bit differently.

"I think we're gonna sleep a lot less than we ever have,"
Gwen Stefani joked. "Normally, you sleep the whole day, which was my favorite part about touring, but that's a thing of the past. We get to see a lot more of the country, though, [because] we're actually leaving the hotel room."

"We have a bet about the nannies. Who can score the most nannies within the band?" drummer Adrian Young added. "We haven't started it yet, but I'll make some predictions when we're off camera."

And though there's going to be babies and nannies galore this summer, ND swear they're not using the tour solely as family time. No, this jaunt is also about reconnecting with their fans and their music. The end goal, they say, is to get inspired to write a new album.

"These are all steps in the process of making the record," bassist Tony Kanal said. "That's what this tour is. And it's kind of cool, because it's nontraditional. Usually, you make a record, and you go on the road. And there's something sort of challenging and exciting about the fact that we're doing it a little bit differently this time around. And, of course, when we do something, we can't really do it small, so here we are doing 55 huge shows, but I think it's going to lead into us making a great record, and I really honestly believe that. Once we reconnect onstage and reconnect with all the people who have supported us, I think it's going to inspire us to make an amazing record."

So even though they've already got plenty of babies in tow, No Doubt plan to get positively pregnant this summer — with songs, at least.

"I think it's really super-rewarding to write music," Stefani said. "For me, personally, it's the magic of the whole thing. It's something you don't have control over. Every time that I've ever written a song, it's always a miracle. I go, 'Wait, how did I write that?' ... And I think that's the journey we're on right now, is to figure out how to do it again. And I do that every time, and I know that, but it's this whole writer's block, frustrating and tortured process. But the reward of that — especially if it's a hit, and you know it right away when you write it if it's going to be — there's kind of nothing like that, because you're creating something. It is like having a baby, in a way, because it's something that's there permanently, that you created and comes through you and ... I think that's what we're all aiming towards."

The wait is over: No Doubt officially ended a nearly five-year concert hiatus on Friday (May 1), taking the stage on the "Today" show for a three-song set that showed they haven't missed a beat.

Though the skies over New York's Rockefeller Center were overcast, ND were sunny enough to cut through the dark clouds, beaming, rocking and swaying — and sounding great — much to the delight of the squealing audience, some of whom had been waiting since 2 a.m. to catch the return of the Orange County legends.

"This is amazing, it feels so good to know they're back together," Carly Balusco, who slept on the sidewalk to catch the show, yelled. "I just saw them backstage, and they look amazing. Can't wait to see the tour. My heart's pumping so hard right now."

"This is my 13th No Doubt show. I'm seeing them tomorrow, I'm seeing them at Bamboozle, and I had to see them today, for the first show," added Elle Lensith, who was jammed in near the stage, added. "It's so awesome they're back. They're timeless, and they'll always be great."

And they were. The band — Gwen Stefani in a black Fred Perry top, bleached-out jeans, platforms and red suspenders, the rest of the guys wearing white from head-to-toe (aside from drummer Adrian Young's striped knee-socks) — kicked things off with "Spiderwebs," bobbing slowly to the ska guitar rhythm and breezy horn lines. Stefani ordered the audience to throw their hands up (and boy, did they), then pogo'ed from side-to-side. Bassist Tony Kanal and guitarist Tom Dumont exchanged giddy smiles, and the crowd sang along with every word. It was like it was 1995 all over again.

"Don't Speak" was next. Stefani clutched the microphone tight, closed her eyes and belted it out, as the thousands of No Doubt fans packed into Rockefeller served as her back-up singers.

They closed with "It's My Life," their Talk Talk cover from 2003. Again, the audience sang along loudly, but Dumont, Kanal and Young — plus ND's two auxiliary musicians — really got the chance to shine here, creating a muscley bit of New Wave shimmer that seemed to lift the clouds, if only for a second.

And then, with the audience cheering and chanting their names, No Doubt embraced in the middle of the stage, waved their hands and departed. A pair of warm-up shows await: Saturday at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey; and then Sunday at the Bamboozle Festival at the Meadowlands. Then it's on to their big summer tour with Paramore. Judging from what fans saw today, ND are more than ready right now.

"They'll always stick together, they'll always be a family. They'll always be great," Jennifer Sanduca, told us after the performance. "It's like they never took a break, seeing them up there today."

On Saturday, No Doubt will return to the stage, after an almost five-year hiatus, at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But who will be in the audience? Die-hard ND fans? Squealing tweenie-boppers weaned on Gwen Stefani's solo albums?

No one seems to be sure — not even No Doubt themselves. Then again, things have always been that way for them.

"I think there will be a lot of new people, and that's exciting. That's what makes this fresh and new, is the fact that the dynamic has changed," guitarist Tom Dumont said. "A lot of bands put out record after record after record, and I think having a break makes it more fresh and exciting. It's a fresh batch of people coming, plus the old fans. It's perfect."

"But that's nothing new for us, because even the first nine years, before we even had a record, we always had different audiences that followed us as we changed," Stefani added. "Certain people were into what we were doing at the time, and we were always changing and evolving, and we never had any limits on what kind of music we would write. We'd gain some and lose some, and that's happened through the entire time we've been together.

"It's always exciting to get in front of new audiences. I got to experience — on my tour — some of the young girls that were there. ... That was the most rewarding thing for me," she continued. "Just seeing them out there, because they're so young, it's their first concert, they have their makeup on, even though they're really not supposed to be wearing it. I hope they show up again this time out. I loved it."

The landscape has shifted since the last time No Doubt toured — back in 2004, on a double-bill with Blink-182. And while that might pose a concern for concert promoters, ND aren't worried about filling the seats this summer.

"It's all about music. ... At the end of the day, you put music in people's ears, they hear recordings, they come to the shows," Dumont said. "Technology may change, and pop culture may change, but music doesn't. Everybody loves it."

And besides, there's more pressing matters to worry about — like getting the Stefani clan up to date on the No Doubt back catalog before the tour starts.

"I'm trying to get [2-year-old son] Kingston to listen to the No Doubt records. ... He didn't know the No Doubt records, so now I'm forcing him to listen to them, and I think he's going to get into it," Stefani laughed. "If I can get him to stop listening to Miley. He's listening to the Disney Channel a lot. ... But I think [9-month-old son] Zuma is more of a No Doubt fan than King is."

No Doubt have been off the road for nearly five years now. That's all about to change.

On Saturday, Gwen and the guys will take the stage at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, then on Sunday, they'll close out the Bamboozle Festival at the Meadowlands. Both dates will serve as tune-ups for a massive summer tour with Paramore, their first full-scale jaunt since 2004.

So, yes — this is a fairly huge deal. But unlike any of the innumerable reunited bands gearing up to hit the road, No Doubt aren't looking at their tour as a way to make tons of cash. Rather, they're using it to kick-start the creative process for a brand-new album, reportedly due in 2010.

"We're calling it 'the procrastination tour' ... well, I am, at least. I'm the biggest procrastinator," Gwen Stefani laughed. "It's not their fault, it's my fault, because I had this whole game plan: 'OK, I'm gonna go on tour with my last record, I'm gonna come home, I'm gonna get pregnant, I'm gonna have a baby, but while I'm pregnant, I'm gonna make the No Doubt record.' That was, like, the plan, but it all didn't work.

"Like, we got a lot of hang-out time and we talked and had so much fun together, but we didn't actually make too much music," she continued. "Maybe around 4:45 to 5 o'clock we'd actually play the instruments and then we'd all have dinner. There was a lot of eating going on."

So, in order to break the deadlock, they all decided to hit the road. And from the minute they began lining up summer tour dates, the floodgates opened.

"You know, it all made sense. We were in the studio, trying to write [songs for the new No Doubt record]. Things weren't coming. Gwen was feeling like she couldn't find the place where she wanted to start the writing process. I think she always goes through this and I think we, uh, we just need to find ourselves. We just need to get out on the road," bassist Tony Kanal said. "And the four of us looked at each other and said, 'It's time to play,' and as soon as we said that, the pressure was lifted ... we got really excited. It was like four adults became four little kids again. We're giddy about it."

The No Doubt/ Paramore tour kicks off May 19 in Fresno, California. But you don't have to wait that long for your ND fix. We'll be bringing you more of our chat with the band over the coming days, right here on MTVNews.com.
