With most of New Orleans pumped dry and businesses beginning to clean up after Hurricane Katrina, one of the city's musical gems has decided to come back home ... for one day, anyway.

Last month, organizers announced that they would move the seventh-annual Voodoo Music Experience to Memphis' Tom Lee Park (see "Voodoo Music Experience Relocates From New Orleans To Memphis"). Now organizers say that they will split the festival into two parts, with the first night's show (October 29) taking place in New Orleans, and the second (October 30) in Memphis. The concert will be the first full-scale, large entertainment event within city limits since the disastrous hurricane and subsequent flood hit the city on August 29.

According to a message posted on the show's official Web site, the shows will be focused on "Two cities united with a common goal: to celebrate and renew the city of New Orleans. As a sign of support and rebirth as New Orleans begins to rebuild, this observance of music will bring together the diversity of culture that serves as the foundation for both cities."

The invitation-only New Orleans show at Riverview Park will celebrate the efforts of those who've worked on the cleanup and recovery efforts in the city for the past six weeks. Previous ticket holders will be welcomed to the New Orleans show, along with police, firefighters, National Guard, military and others who've worked on restoring the city.

"In the course of the past few weeks, the outpouring of support from not only the music industry, but from people from all walks of life, who want to come together to celebrate New Orleans has been tremendous," festival producer Stephen Rehage said in a statement. "The ability to move forward in two cities — with so much music history — is overwhelming to everyone involved with this year's event. We want to thank all the artists who have shown their support by honoring their commitment to this historic event. We all look forward to making this weekend one to remember."

The festival was originally scheduled to take place over Halloween weekend in New Orleans' City Park. When Katrina hit, organizers moved the entire show to Memphis, but they had a change of heart when community leaders in New Orleans approached them about moving the show back for a day as a tribute to the relief workers. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the New Orleans Restoration Fund as well as Mercy Corps, Habitat for Humanity and other local organizations working to restore the city's famed cultural heritage.

The New Orleans bill will feature Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Digable Planets, the Bravery, New York Dolls, LCD Soundsystem, the Secret Machines, H.I.M., Sevendust, VHS or Beta, the Rebirth Brass Band and more than 20 other acts.

The Memphis show will take place at AutoZone Park and feature Cake, the North Mississippi Allstars, the Decemberists, New York Dolls, Better Than Ezra, VHS or Beta, Sevendust, Cowboy Mouth, H.I.M., World Leader Pretend and the Giraffes.

Memphis will also host a series of free downtown concerts beginning on October 27 and continuing through the weekend; lineups for those shows have not yet been announced. In addition, such New Orleans legends as Dr. John and the Neville Brothers will play special New Orleans-themed concerts on the city's Beale Street.

To find out what you can do to help provide relief to victims of Katrina, head to think MTV's hurricane relief page.

Arthur "Killer" Kane, bassist for the New York Dolls, died Tuesday night in Los Angeles, due to complications from leukemia. Kane, 55, was a founding member of the legendary 1970s band and took part in its recent reunion. The Dolls' snarling, rudimentary sound is widely acknowledged as one of the key influences on punk rock.

Dolls vocalist David Johansen released a statement from "somewhere in Europe" in response to the news of Kane's death. "Arthur apparently died of leukemia," Johansen wrote, "which I was unaware he had, as was [Dolls guitarist] Sylvain [Sylvain], whom I just spoke to in London. I believe Arthur didn't know either. About two weeks ago, he came down with what seemed to be a lingering flu, for which he was under doctors' care. Last night, he went to the hospital where he died."

The Dolls, though officially disbanded in 1977, had reunited at the behest of Morrissey, the former president of their U.K. fan club, for London's Meltdown festival in June, with Steve Conte filling in for guitarist Johnny Thunders (who died in 1991) and Libertines drummer Gary Powell taking over for the late Jerry Nolan.

They were scheduled to perform at Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival in New York on August 14 and at the U.K.'s Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals August 28 and 29. It is unclear if the band will go ahead with these shows.

On Thursday, Morrissey released a statement on Kane's passing, calling him a "very gentle soul." Of the reunion, he said, "I will always remember the look of bashful happiness on Arthur's face as people in the audience constantly called out his name. He was finally back where he belonged."

The band formed in 1971 and released two proper albums, 1973's self-titled debut and 1974's Too Much Too Soon, although there have been many subsequent releases. Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren briefly managed the group late in its career.

In the mid-1970s, Kane formed his own band, the Killer Kane Band, and was also a member of the Corpse Grinders and the Idols.

Kane is the third founding member of the band to pass away, following the deaths of drummer Billy Murcia in 1972 from a combination of drugs and alcohol and guitarist Johnny Thunders in 1991 from a heroin overdose. Drummer Jerry Nolan, who replaced Murcia, passed away in 1991 from a stroke.

"It's good to know that he went out on a high point in his musical life," Johansen wrote, "but he will be sorely missed."

Want to check into Britney Spears' Onyx Hotel? Soon you can, when the real Onyx Hotel opens May 17 in Boston, with a Britney Spears suite to open in June that will be designed by the singer and her mother. As the hotel itself is still under construction, the room isn't exactly finished yet, but a rep for the hotel said that the room's decor will reflect Spears' preferences, down to the style of furniture and carpeting, and will also contain memorabilia from the pop princess' career. A portion of the room fee will go to the Britney Spears Foundation. ...

Both Madonna and Christina Aguilera are offering opportunities to get up close and personal with them on their concert tours. Aguilera is auctioning off a charity ticket package where the highest bidder would get two front-row seats and meet-and-greet passes, with proceeds benefiting a family crisis center in Los Angeles. Madonna's VIP package offers premium seats in the first 25 rows, VIP laminates and a VIP entrance to the concert, but no charity is designated just yet. Both VIP packages are available via Stubhub.com. ... Don't look to get any Madonna tickets for a Friday night, though. That's because the singer, who was born Catholic, is taking her Kabbalah studies very seriously and is now observing the Sabbath on Friday evenings — the Jewish day of rest — and has structured her tour accordingly. ...

C-Murder won a new murder trial last week, but he's not a free man. The judge in the case denied a request to release him on bond Monday because he also faces charges involving a 2001 altercation in which he was booked for attempted first-degree murder and a weapons charge after allegedly trying to shoot the owner of a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, club. The rapper's defense lawyer argued that prosecutors never pursued those charges, but bail was denied anyway. C-Murder also faces a charge of battery on a prison guard and has a June 14 court date on that charge. ...
