A week after a 16-year-old high school student's death shocked the citizens of Chicago, Nas has written an open letter to the city's youth asking them to stop the cycle of violence. The rapper was reacting to the videotaped beating of honor roll student Derrion Albert, who police say walked unknowingly into the path of a brawl between two rival groups, becoming the latest statistic in a grim death toll in Chicago schools, where 34 students were killed last school year, according to The New York Times.

"Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars!" Nas wrote in an essay posted on GlobalGrind.com. "Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool. ... I know that feeling, that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, anyone. But ...we chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for."

Nas recalled seeing kids killed over designer clothing, sneakers, chains, "he say, she say" beefs, turf wars and youth seeking revenge for neglect from their parents.

"I remember feeling like I was the hardest 'n*gga' breathing," he wrote. "And I couldn't wait to prove it. But let's think. What are we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state, feel your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household."

Four teens were charged with first-degree murder on Monday in Albert's slaying, in which the youth was beaten with wooden planks and kicked in the head after stumbling into a fight a few blocks from his school, Christian Fenger Academy High School. Authorities said the fight followed a shooting earlier in the day outside the school involving the two groups. Police are studying the widely distributed amateur video of the incident, the third killing of a student since the school year began. Chicago Public School officials have implemented a new anti-violence plan this fall, the Times reports, and they plan to offer extra counseling and assistance to schools and students deemed most likely to be involved in violence.

Nas encouraged kids to avoid becoming a statistic or playing into stereotypes. "You have the ability and mind power to change they way we are looked at," the rapper said. "Look who's watching us, young warriors. Look who's throwing us in jail constantly; look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Loving to bury us in the ground or in jail where we continue this worthless war on one another.

"We are wasting more and more time," Nas urged. "We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. ... When we see each other, why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, warriors ... and instead of building each other up, we are at war with each other. ... May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I'm with you young warriors. You're me and I'm you. But trust me! You are fighting the wrong war."

The specter of the grim murder has brought unwanted attention to Chicago just before President Barack Obama flies to Copenhagen this Thursday in support of his hometown's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Nas and Kelis reunited recently during fashion week in New York, and if the pictures were any indication, the estranged couple appeared to have reconciled. But according to reports, Kelis is still moving forward with filing for divorce from her husband and the father of her newborn son.

Nas, for his part, has kept relatively quite on the matter, but that might not be the case for much longer. The Queens rapper spoke with MTV UK and said he's "scared" of putting together his next solo project because he's "a little nervous to tell you the truth."

"This is a record that, right now, I'm scared of making," Nas said of the album. "I don't know what's gonna happen, as far as I don't know what I'm gonna say. I feel like I've put so much of my personal life out there, and I feel like I'm one of the sort of guys you don't really hear about [though] paparazzi or fan magazines all the time. But I just feel like my life is so much out there [now] that it's kind of like — man, I don't even know how to put into words how I feel about putting this record together. I'm a little nervous, to tell you the truth. That's all I can say."

Throughout albums like I Am ... and God's Son, Nas has offered an introspective glance into his upbringing. He even narrated his matrimonial jitters on Street Disciple's "Getting Married."

Before getting to his next solo project, Nas has been busy working on Distant Relatives, a collaborative album with Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley. The duo have toured all summer as a part of the Rock the Bells trek and gave fans a preview of some of the material. They announced their project some time ago, but Nas said the album is in the final stages.

"[He's] a great artist and he does his thing and he's made a mark and I like his music," Nas said of his Distant Relatives partner. "I worked on his last album on a song called 'Road to Zion,' and I just wanted to work with him some more, so now we're wrapping up an album. I hope that it comes out very soon."

Cornerstone Credentials

We heard the album last night, son. Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II is a certified gem. That very last song on the LP, "Kiss the Ring," is amazing. He's has those mafia war stories, the sharp wordplay, Wu-Bangers and even some Dr. Dre G-Funk. What the Chef was unable to get was Nas. One of the main show-stealers from the original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx never gave Rae a verse for the new LP. So much for nostalgia.

"He committed to it," Rae told Mixtape Daily. "I knew dude be busy. However it goes down, it's cool with me. My thing is, I sacrificed to even ask because of the fans. But if dudes be too busy in their own minds, they don't have to do it. Because Rae continues to do Rae anyway. Y'all came to see me. It's the Rae show anyway."

The Chef does have a couple of non-Wu-Tang castmembers — Beanie Sigel and The Lox's Jadakiss and Styles P — participating on the CD.

"I had to go back and deal with brothers I felt was really next to me, like a Sigel," Chef said. "The way he came across, y'all gonna know he's nothing to play with. He's a vicious MC. When me and him get on a track, everybody gotta sit down. I got Kiss on the album. He's like another one of me. I'm like him. We seen the same things. We share the same stories. I'm just a little older than Kiss, but we're compatible. I wanted to keep it real Cuban, where people be like, 'That's how they talk.' Jeezy would have been a good dude for the album, but maybe I'll get him for [Cuban Linx III]. I wanted to keep it light on the features. I didn't want everybody to [feel] like I'm looking too hard and leaning on features. I put Wu all over the joints because that's how we made the first one."

According to Rae's camp, he definitely has enough quality material to put out an Only Built 4 Cuban Linx III at the top of the year.

Just hours after Kelis gave birth to her first child, a judge reportedly ordered her estranged husband, Nas, to pay her hefty sums in both spousal and child support.

According to The Associated Press, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Thursday (July 23) that Nas must pay Kelis nearly $44,000 a month in support. The ruling is temporary until a follow-up hearing September 8, when it will be decided if the amount should be altered. In addition to the monthly support, Nas must also pay $45,000 to cover Kelis' attorney fees and for a forensic accountant.

Attorney for both parties were at odds over support for Kelis' prenatal care. In papers filed with the court, Kelis claims Nas "abandoned" her during her pregnancy. A lawyer for Nas, however, contends his client paid $30,000 in expenses toward the birth and maintained her health-insurance costs.

When contacted by MTV News, representatives for Kelis' lawyer's office declined to comment or confirm the information.

Kelis and Nas have been embattled in a bitter divorce dispute since word broke that the couple would be splitting in April.

In papers filed in court at the time, Kelis cited irreconcilable differences. The couple were married for four years, and in January, they announced they were expecting their first child together. Nas spoke excitedly to MTV News in April about welcoming his second child; he has a teenage daughter from a previous relationship. He even went as far as suggesting fans help the musical couple name their son.

"I've been thinking about kinda putting something online: 'Choose his name,' " he said. "You get a couple stacks for that. We take care of you for that. You win something real. But we're thinking now."

A couple of weeks later, Kelis announced the split, and the couple have had it out since through court papers, Twitter posts and now legal rulings.

Nas, for his part, seems to be in a celebratory mode. In a video posted online earlier this week, Nas revealed the name of his son, Knight Jones, and shouted out his newborn. He also urged his fans to be cautious about all the media attention about his divorce.

"My son is born today, so shout-out to my son, Knight," the rapper says in a clip, which is stamped with Tuesday's date. "My son's name is Knight. That's what I named the young God, Knight. Y'all heard it first. Don't believe nothing you hear in the media. I love y'all. Don't listen to that bullsh--. I love y'all. That's why I'm here."

A day after estranged husband Nas broke the news of the birth of the couple's first child, Kelis officially announced the delivery of Knight Jones. "Kelis gave birth to Knight Jones last night on July 22nd around 9p.m.," a statement from Kelis' spokesperson read. "Weighing a healthy 7.8 lbs, the beautiful baby boy and his mother are doing wonderful."

The statement noted that the birth was natural and that Kelis went into labor around 2 a.m. on Monday morning. The singer's first child was delivered at a New York City hospital with her mother and sister in the room.

In a video posted online Wednesday, proud papa Nas spilled the first details of the birth. "My son is born today, so shout-out to my son, Knight," the rapper says in a clip, which is stamped with Tuesday's date. "My son's name is Knight. That's what I named the young God, Knight," Nas tells fans in the clip. "Y'all heard it first. Don't believe nothing you hear in the media. I love y'all. Don't listen to that bullsh--.

The couple publicly announced the pregnancy in January after being married for four years. They appeared to be in good spirits months after the announcement as they <linktype="content" id="1609158">solicited names for their child from MTVNews.com readers
. However, just two weeks after the solicitations, Kelis unexpectedly filed for divorce from her husband. The splitting process has been bitter, with the two arguing over finances in court filings. At one point Kelis took to Twitter to admonish Nas after the rapper posted a salacious picture of himself with a group of women on the site using singer Maxwell's account. Reports also surfaced on Tuesday that Kelis barred Nas from the delivery room while she was in labor and her delivery announcement appeared to confirm that.

While the once happily married couple continue to be at odds, Nas appears to be in a celebratory mood over the birth of his second child in the online video. (He also has a daughter from a previous relationship.) In the same video clip, taken at a neighborhood party at the rapper's native Queensbridge Housing Projects, Nas takes the stage to perform. He again shouts-out his son and also urges his fans to be cautious when watching news reports about his divorce proceedings.

"My son's name is Knight. That's what I named the young God, Knight," Nas tells fans. "Y'all heard it first. Don't believe nothing you hear in the media. I love y'all. Don't listen to that bullsh--. I love y'all, that's why I'm here."

WANTAGH, New York — It was musical, it was nostalgic, but most important, it was not violent. Guerilla Union held their annual Rock the Bells show Sunday at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater as part of the yearly tour. Going into the show, there had been heavy tension involving two of the acts, the Wu-Tang Clan and Slaughterhouse.

Slaughterhouse's Joe Budden had been involved in a back-and-forth with Method Man and Inspectah Deck for weeks. Although Deck and Meth were not officially on the Rock the Bells bill, it was no surprise when both appeared at Jones Beach to support RZA and Raekwon, who were slated to perform.

The Clan brought the ruckus, not the ignorance. They rocked the theater with a catalog of hits and didn't waste time dissing Slaughterhouse. At the end of the performance, Meth told the crowd no one in the rap game could touch him or his brothers.

"Can't nobody touch the legacy," Meth boasted. "Our track record speaks louder than any of them mutha----as."

Between the end of Wu's set and the beginning of Slaughterhouse's, Method Man and Joe Budden were seen walking together in the parking lot. The two took their time quashing the beef.

When Slaughterhouse, which also includes Royce da 5'9", Joell Ortiz and Crooked I, took the stage, they publicly announced the end of the short-term feud.

"It will never be a beef with Wu-Tang clan," Royce said. He then revealed the convo between Meth and Budden, saying the situation was "squashed."

But Rock the Bells wasn't just about them. Other performers included Big Boi, Common, Black Star, the Roots, Buckshot and headliners Nas and Damien "Jr. Gong" Marley.

Nas started his set with classics like "N.Y. State of Mind," then shared the stage with Jr. Gong. Nas kicked familiar verses (his rhymes off "The Message" and reggae-inspired hip-hop tracks like Shyne's "Bad Boyz"), and Jr. Gong came back doing his reggae chats over some of Nas' beats, including "Represent."

The rapper also brought out AZ for "Phone Tap" and "Life's a Bitch." Then he let D-Block have their own mini-set, highlighted by "Good Times," "Wild Out," "Who's Real" and Jadakiss' duet with Nas, "What If."

Executive Decisions: Power Moves Behind The Scenes

Lenny Santiago has a rich history in the rap game. His hands have been in almost all Roc-A-Fella Records releases (sans Kanye West's), and now he's running things over at Def Jam as vice president of A&R. He signed DJ Khaled and also spearheaded the A&R work on Jadakiss' The Last Kiss and Fabolous' upcoming Loso's Way (due July 28), and his big fall project is the new one from Ghostface Killah.

But hold up: There's been some controversy over whether Ghostface will really live up to early descriptions that the record that will be an R&B album. Tony Starks giving up rapping for crooning? Santiago says no.

"The new album is called The Wizard of Poetry," Santiago said. "It is an R&B album. When I say that, this is what I mean: Ghostface usually raps over melodic, soulful R&B tracks. This time, we came around and I had him rhyme over the same type of tracks, but we matched him with great R&B stars. John Legend is on there. Raheem DeVaughn is on there. Estelle is on there. Musiq Soulchild is on there. Lloyd is on there. We just paired him up. It's the same Ghost, the same gritty host, the same Ghost that talks to the ladies in that soulful voice along with R&B hooks."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Great food, great conversation and the music is banging. Fabolous invited us to dinner earlier this week at Philippe Chow's to hear Loso's Way. Alongside MTV News, our Hot 97 homie Miss Info was among the short list of guests, as well as DJ S&S and Nas. S&S told some wild stories about him bootlegging some of the music from the early Illmatic recording sessions; luckily, Nas has let bygones be bygones.

Esco particularly loved a Fab song called "Pachanga," on which he flips some of Nas' famous lyrics: "Love changes, a thug changes and best friends become strangers/ Pachangas!"

Another legend in Fab's corner is Jay-Z. Fab took a record Jay had for American Gangster called "When the Money Goes."

"Me and Jay built a connection through Def Jam," Fab told us on the video set for "Throw It in the Bag." "Through working together executive to artist [when Jay was Def Jam president], we built a different relationship as well. Maybe artist to artist we was in a little different space. You didn't know where each other was at. We work well. When I needed help with the [new] album and I was reaching out for people for joints for the album, he was one of the people that was like, 'Hear this.' That's where that joint came from. We got a connection. He's from Brooklyn, I'm from Brooklyn — that's enough of a connection right there."

Look for a "Loso's Way" movie to come with the album when it drops July 28.

"We came up with the songs first," he said. "I made the songs to the scenario I thought of. Then I wrote a story [for a film]. Even when I was writing the story, I could hear certain songs coming up in those scenarios, in those scenes. That's why it meshed well."

Michael Jackson's best songs were alive, and they made the listener feel the same way. They had heart and soul, blood, sweat and even some tears — they were living things, expertly crafted by some of the best scientists in the business (Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton, etc.). Jackson's voice — sometimes lithe and tender, other times pained and downright dangerous — was always the lifeblood, the stuff that primed the pump. The musical flourishes (the disco rushes, the rock-hard guitar solos, the cinematic orchestral sweeps) were the DNA. The beat was the backbone.

Those building blocks were used to create some of the most undeniable music of the past quarter-century, massive hits that still fill dance floors and bring tears to the eyes of the faithful. They are the reason we remember the man. And they're still potent, still being employed by producers and musicians today — a testament to the genius of Jackson and his team of musical creators.

Some of the biggest acts in music today have built hits around MJ samples. Kanye West and T-Pain lifted "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" for their 2007 hit "Good Life." Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" took the beat from "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " (which Jackson actually sampled from Cameroonian singer Manu Dibango's 1975 song "Soul Makossa") and MJ's famed whoops. Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" samples the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." And we're just getting started.

Public Enemy sampled Vincent Price's famous "Thriller" cackle on their seminal "911 (Is a Joke)." Nas' "It Ain't Hard to Tell" sampled "Human Nature." Tupac's "Letter 2 My Unborn" samples "Liberian Girl." Diddy sampled the J5's "Walk On" on his "All About the Benjamins" remix. Big Pun, Ghostface, Redman, Ludacris and Jennifer Lopez — all sampled at the altar of the King of Pop.

Electronic artists like Moby and the Prodigy got in on the act too. And the list goes on and on ... artists well-known and obscure, legendary and fleeting: They've all sampled Michael Jackson's songs. In fact, his musical DNA is so widespread that it necessitates sites like this and this just to document it. Jackson the man may be gone, but we're willing to bet that his music will live on — continuing to influence and inspire and build the songs of the 21st century.

MTV will be paying tribute to MJ throughout the weekend with music videos, exclusive performances and calls and tweets from celebrity admirers and friends.

Share your Michael Jackson memories by uploading video and comments to Your.MTV.com or joining the discussion below.

Just weeks after news of their divorce broke, Kelis has accused her estranged husband Nas of abandoning her during her pregnancy. Kelis is carrying the couple's first child together and is reportedly due to give birth next month.

MTV News has obtained court papers filed by Kelis against Nas that detail her accusations.

In the motion, filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Kelis is seeking child support, spousal support, and attorney fees and costs from Nas.

Overall, the singer's requests total a number of one-time payments upwards of $30,000 for birthing costs, a nurse, baby items for multiple homes, and more.

According to the documents, Kelis is due to give birth to the couple's first child on July 21. (Nas has a daughter, Destiny Jones, 15, from a previous relationship.)

Kelis is also seeing spousal support retroactive to April 30 when the couple split, according to the filing. Requests for child support, beginning when Kelis gives birth, and for Nas to maintain her medical insurance were also made.

In the papers, Kelis, a recording artist with a number of hits including "Milkshake" and "Caught Out There," maintains that she is dependent on Nas' financial will. The singer said she took a hiatus from her musical career in 2008 to attend culinary school. The monies she received in that year were royalty payments, but have since been spent on monthly bills.

In the filing, Kelis and her legal team attempt to paint Nas' financial picture.

The paperwork alleges Nas signed an $11 million recording contract with Def Jam and is co-owner of touring company, Gorilla Union. The documents state Nas also pays for five homes, three for the couple in Los Angeles, New York and Georgia, and one for his family in New York and her family in the Dominican Republic. In addition to business ventures and property, the filings suggest Nas owns a number of luxury items, including a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Maybach, a Ferrari and a full-time driver in New York.

According to the filing, the married couple maintained separate bank accounts and filed separate tax returns.

A source who requested anonymity told MTV News that Kelis has attempted to reach Nas directly and via her attorney, but both routes have been unsuccessful.

"All of this is adding up and all of the weight is falling on her shoulders, creating extreme emotional stress which I'm sure has affects on her physically since she's due to give birth any day now," the source said. "Kelis has spent every last penny that she has to cover whatever expenses for the baby that she can but at this point really needs him to step up and share in the responsibility. She physically can't work to bring in any sort of income, as much as she'd like to."

Earlier this month, Kelis took to Twitter to comment about infidelity. She did not name Nas, but the Tweets appeared in the wake of a widely circulated photo of him surrounded by unidentified women in Turks and Caicos. The image was leaked by Nas using singer Maxwell's Twitter account; Maxwell was also pictured in the image.

Throughout her series of Tweets, Kelis discussed the "sub par tricks" that participate in cheating with a married man. She said "all the scum bag coward husbands" and "less than impressive" women should unite and "go down in flames together."

Word of the couple's divorce was first reported in April of this year. The pair were married in January 2005 and until recently seemed to be the picture of happiness, collaborating on music together and appearing on number red carpets. In February, Nas even asked for fans' help in naming his and Kelis' baby.

At press time, representatives for Nas had not responded MTV News' requests for comment.
