'Tis the season for inappropriately early Christmas decorations, conspicuous consumption and, most important, holiday radio shows. The end-of-year tradition of smashing a dozen completely unrelated acts onto a stage together as a thank you to fans (and radio programmers) is about to kick off, and this season's offerings offer multiple coast-to-coast appearances by everyone from Muse to Taylor Swift, 30 Seconds to Mars, Justin Bieber and Kris Allen.

One of the season's most pop-tastic rosters is for Z100 (WHTZ) in New York's annual Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden on December 11. The talent lineup includes Taylor Swift, John Mayer, Justin Bieber, the Fray, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen, Boys Like Girls, Pitbull, Owl City, Jay Sean and Ke$ha. On the opposite coast, Los Angeles' KIIS (102.7 FM) Jingle Ball will host Swift, Keri Hilson, Fabolous, the Ting Tings, 3OH!3, LMFAO, Jay Sean and Jason Derulo at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on December 5.

Tampa's WFLZ 93.3 FM will host many of those same acts December 13 at the St. Pete Times Forum, for a show featuring the Fray, Sparks, Pitbull, 3OH!3, Boys Like Girls, Sean Kingston and the Ting Tings. Yet another Jingle Ball, this one for Kiss 108 at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts, on December 10, will host Bieber, Sparks, the Fray, Boys Like Girls, Kingston and Jay Sean. Assuming that's not enough Jingle Balling for you, there's always Minneapolis' sold-out KDWB 101.3 Ball, which helps kick things off December 6 at the Xcel Energy Center with Sparks, Pitbull, Boys Like Girls, Bieber, 3OH!3, Sean, Owl City and Colbie Caillat.

The granddaddy of the alternative holiday radio shows, KROQ (106.7 FM) Los Angeles' Almost Acoustic Christmas, hits the Gibson Amphitheatre on December 12-13 with AFI, Muse, 311, Rise Against, Alice in Chains, 30 Seconds to Mars, Dead by Sunrise, Phoenix, the Bravery, Metric, Vampire Weekend and White Rabbits.

In Philadelphia, Q102 (WIOQ FM) will shake its Jingle Ball with Bieber, Sparks, Sean, Owl City, Pitbull, Cobra Starship and the Fray on December 9 at the Susquehanna Bank Center. Dallas' KRBE (104.1 FM) will light up its Not So Silent Night show at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Houston with the All-American Rejects, Bieber, Cobra Starship and Sean.

If your taste runs to the alternative, the December 3 Buzz Xmas Show at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, will offer sets from Spoon, the Bravery, Metric and buzz band Hockey. An even more star-studded lineup will hit the Remac Arena in San Diego on December 12 for 94.9's Holiday Hootenanny, with Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Manchester Orchestra and White Rabbits. A roster featuring the best of those two bills will play the WaMu Arena in Seattle on December 15 at venerable alternative station 107.7 The End's (KNDD) Deck the Hall Ball, featuring Muse, 30 Seconds to Mars, Phoenix, Metric and Vampire Weekend.

The rundown is slightly different at 106.1 FM's Jingle Bell Bash also at Seattle's WaMu Arena on December 19, with guarantees of complicated hair and lots of questionable tats from the likes of All-American Rejects, Cobra Starship, We the Kings, All Time Low, Hey Monday, Cash Cash, Push Play, the Maine, This Providence, Amber Pacific and hosting duties handled by none other than Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz.

Harder-rocking tastes will be slaked by the lineup of the Night the Edge Stole Xmas at the Nokia Theatre in Dallas on December 3-4, which will feature headliners Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, AFI and 30 Seconds to Mars, as well as Flyleaf, Dead by Sunrise, the Bravery and Cage the Elephant. A similar lineup will play KXTE's Holiday Havoc at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on December 11-12, with contributions from Alice in Chains, Muse, Dead by Sunrise, Cage the Elephant and Paper Tongues. A lot of the same names will be on hand for KTCL (93.3) in Denver's Not So Silent Night, with sets from AFI, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Say Anything and I Fight Dragons on December 6 at the Magness Arena. Detroit's 88.7 FM (CIMX) will also get hair flying with the Night 89X Stole Christmas 12, featuring 30 Seconds to Mars, Flyleaf, Thousand Foot Krutch, Veer Union and After Midnight Project.

New York's leading hip-hop station, Hot 97, presents Funkmaster Flex's Thanksgiving Bash on November 26 at the LQ Nightclub with Swizz Beatz, Ron Browz, Omarion, Amerie and Juelz Santana. Hartford, Connecticut, station Hot 93.7 (WZMX) will take over the XL Center on December 3 with a Jingle Jam show by Pitbull, Mario, Hilson, Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj and Fabolous.

Chicago's B96 Jingle Bash will crash down December 12 at Allstate Arena with spots from Hilson, Bieber, Pitbull, David Guetta, Sean, Kingston, Jeremih, Livvi Frank and the Jump Smokers. Fab will also be on hand for the December 16 Power 106 Cali Christmas show at the Gibson Amphitheatre near Los Angeles, headlined by 50 Cent and T-Pain, with Jeremih, Pitbull and Sean in the mix as well.

Early last November, weeks before Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart introduced the world to "Twilight" movie madness, the film's soundtrack shot straight to the top of the Billboard albums chart. After conquering bookstores and on its way to a $70 million opening weekend at theaters, "Twilight" had showed it could rock your iPod too.

Fast-forward a year, and it's set to happen again. Little more than a month before "New Moon" premieres, the movie's soundtrack is looking to make a splash when it drops Friday (October 16). MTV News has been mapping the universe of "New Moon" music for months — which bands made the cut, which bands didn't, what the lucky few had to say about being selected — and we've gathered all our reporting together so you will know everything there is to know about the movie's tunes, in MTV's "New Moon" soundtrack cheat sheet:

The First Soundtrack
News about the original "Twilight" soundtrack started to trickle out as early as April 2008, when MTV News visited the movie's Oregon set and reported that to the disc. That summer at Comic-Con, director Catherine Hardwicke confirmed the info, saying he'd composed three songs. While only one RPattz track, "Never Think," made the cut, the Brit actor was joined on the soundtrack by Muse, Paramore, Perry Farrell and Linkin Park, among others.

" 'Twilight' really caught my attention and held it," Paramore's Hayley Williams told MTV News that September. "I'm really excited to see the book adapted to film and excited that our band gets to be a part of the phenomenon."

The soundtrack ended up selling 164,700 its first week on its way to achieving double-platinum status.

Collecting the 'New Moon' Sounds
Which bands would get the call for the soundtrack sequel? For months, there was a whole lot of speculation without much in the way of solid answers. Coldplay, Kelly Clarkson, Thom Yorke and the Kings of Leon were among the names floated early on. The first verified news came in August, when MTV News revealed that Death Cab for Cutie had secured the soundtrack's first single with their tune "Meet Me on the Equinox." We then premiered the song during VMA weekend.

After weeks of guesswork and insider leaks, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer unveiled the full track list on her Web site September 21. The artists and bands included Muse, the Killers, Thom Yorke, Lykke Li and OK Go.

The Artists Speak
Ever since the lineup went public, MTV News has been hitting up these musicians for their thoughts on joining the "Twilight" universe and the inside word about the songs they've contributed.

"We were all really excited to be asked to write for it, because it had become such a massive phenomenon," Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard said. "We wrote and recorded the song and turned it in, and you hoped the people deemed it worthy."

It was indeed deemed worthy, as was the track recorded by Bon Iver and St. Vincent called "Rosyln." "I think there's something vampirey and creepy about the two of us singing together," said St. Vincent, whose real name is Annie Clark. "It's a simple, stripped-down kind of song. It's really elegant and beautiful."

Swedish singer Lykke Li revealed that she caught an early viewing of "New Moon," sat down at the piano and composed "Possibility." "It's almost like a fever haze," she explained. "It's very repetitive, like a mood you go into. ... The lyrics are like, 'When you walk, you walk like a thief with blood on your hands, because I die when you leave me.' "

Returning for the second "Twilight" soundtrack, Muse said they were thankful for the increased exposure. "I think our music has reached out to whole loads of new people that haven't heard us before," drummer Dominic Howard said. "It's great to know that people are discovering our music. It's a nice side project to be involved in."

The Vampire Future
The "Twilight" future is actually arriving a bit early this year — four days, to be exact — after the soundtrack release date was shifted from October 20 to October 16. But what comes next? "Eclipse," the third of the franchise films, is in the midst of shooting in Vancouver. Which musicians might make it onto that soundtrack?

Muse have hinted that the band will be contributing music yet again to the franchise. "We might even do something for the third one," Howard told us. "How about that for a scoop?"

But for now, it's all just speculation. And here's some more: Jackson Rathbone, who plays vampire Jasper Cullen, leads a band called 100 Monkeys, which is providing the soundtrack and score for his upcoming movie "Girlfriend." Could this mean that Rathbone might show up on "Eclipse," as Pattinson did on "Twilight"?

"We'd love it," Rathbone told MTV News in June. "[But] we're not really pushing for it. It's one of those things where if they want to put our song on the album, I'm not going to complain."

Muse are apparently fully embracing their status as the "Twilight" band. They've already had their track "Supermassive Black Hole" on the first film's soundtrack, and come Friday, Twilighters can get their hands on the "New Moon" soundtrack, which features the group's remixed track "I Belong to You."

Now it looks like there's a good chance the British rockers will be back for even more vampy fun on the "Eclipse" soundtrack. "It's great to have the feeling of being a new band again in so many people's eyes or minds ... we might even do something for the third one," drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News. "How about that for a scoop?"

Nothing is set in stone yet, but Howard noted that besides being a favorite of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, they also have an in with "Eclipse" director David Slade.

"[Slade is] kind of a friend of ours 'cause he directed about three or four of our videos for the second album, and he's a really great video director," Howard explained. "I know he did that really great kind of sick horror [film '30 Days of Night'] which was a bit of a vampire/zombie vibe, wasn't it? So I think he's a great director, and he's quite a funny character as well. So, yeah, we might do something for him as well."

Although Muse have no problems selling albums without the assistance of "Twilight," Howard notes that they're not going to pass up the chance to work on music for the hugely popular franchise. "That's not the sole reason why people know about us, because this is now our fifth album," he said. "But it's a nice side project to be involved with."

Whether they wanted to or not, Muse have pretty much established themselves as the resident "Twilight" band. After being frequently shouted out by author Stephenie Meyer, the British rockers' "Supermassive Black Hole" was featured on the soundtrack to the first film. It surprised absolutely no one that they were asked to record a song for the second flick in the franchise, "New Moon," but the band is pretty flattered to be the only artists to appear on both discs.

"It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us," drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News. "We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix — it was before 'Twilight' came out. She's a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts."

But now that everyone has gone "vampire nuts," Howard says they're happy to benefit from the extra exposure. "I think our music has reached out to whole loads of new people that haven't heard us before," he said. "It's great to know that people are discovering our music. It's a nice side project to be involved in."

Muse originally recorded the piano ballad "I Belong to You" for their latest album, The Resistance. But just as that album came out, the brain trust behind the "Twilight" flicks asked them to rework the track for "New Moon."

"I know the director [Chris Weitz] really, really liked that track," Howard said. "He really wanted to get it into a scene somewhere, but they wanted a slightly different vibe of what was already recorded for the album."

So, they headed back into the studio, and Howard said he's quite pleased with the results. "It's a bit more rock in some ways," he said. "We rocked it up a bit and put some guitars on it and did an alternative mix."

Although Muse will soon be heading out on a tour, Howard said they might be able to fit the film's premiere into their schedules. "I think we got invited to the premiere, which might be in London the day before one of our shows in London," he said. "I liked the first one. I thought it was quite cool. I thought it was quite raw as well."

It's not a leak, but the site British Amazon.com has given fans an unexpected preview of the hotly anticipated "New Moon" soundtrack (which hits stores on October 20) by posting a 30-second snippet of each song on the album.

Which means that, if you were wondering what Thom Yorke's "Hearing Damage" or the Killers' "A White Demon Love Song" sounds like, you're in luck! (BTW, the answers are "An outtake from The Eraser" and "Lou Reed," respectively.)

Based on these clips, Lykke Li's "Possibility" evokes a hazy fever dream, Muse's "New Moon" remix of "I Belong to You" (the original version of which appears on their just-released album The Resistance) is a stately minuet, Bon Iver and St. Vincent's "Rosyln" is hushed and churchly, and OK Go's "Shooting the Moon" — with its weird sound effects — reminds us a whole lot of a Flaming Lips track.

The Friday unveiling of snippets from the "New Moon" soundtrack is a fitting way to cap off what's already been a pretty huge week for members of Twilight Nation. On Wednesday, after months of hype, the video for the first single off the album — Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" — premiered on MTV, and fans of the series responded with gusto (though they would've preferred more shirtless Robert Pattinson, to be honest). And MTV News will have lots more about the soundtrack in a series of articles that begin publishing on Monday!

The Amazon preview only appears on the United Kingdom version of the site; at press time, the U.S. site did not contain any snippets of songs from the soundtrack.

Though Glenn Beck fervently proclaimed his affinity for Muse's apocalyptic glam stylings last month, it was hard to figure out where the worlds of the conservative talker and the British prog rockers could meet. And because Beck is often purposely outrageous, it's also hard to tell how much of what he says he believes himself and when he's simply stirring the pot for the sake of good TV or radio.

But we now know one thing for sure: When Beck claimed a few weeks ago that Muse's people insisted he stop raving on about how much he loves the group's new album, The Resistance, he was making a funny.

MTV News reported earlier today that shortly after heaping praise on Muse two weeks ago, and specifically on the song "United States of Eurasia," Beck announced on his show that he had gotten an e-mail from Muse's people asking that he retract his endorsement.

Well, it turns out that while his enthusiasm about Muse remains strong, the bit about the e-mail was in jest. On Monday (October 5), Christopher Balfe, the president and COO of Beck's company, Mercury Radio Arts, released a statement clarifying the situation. "After raving about Muse for four minutes, Glenn made a joke about their representatives e-mailing him to stop," Balfe wrote. "While it is entirely possible that Muse does not like having Glenn as a fan, he was making a joke and their representatives never reached out to him."

Muse have not publicly reacted to the unexpected praise from the excitable Fox News contributor and avowed Libertarian — who stated as fact during his kudos-fest that Muse were also clearly Libertarians. When asked for a response to the retraction of the fake retraction, a spokesperson for the band said there would be no comment from the Muse camp.

British prog rockers Muse have made no secret of their desire to conquer America with their bombastic fifth album, The Resistance. From their over-the-top VMA performance to multiple magazine covers and countless interviews, the band has put the full-court press on to woo U.S. fans.

But that doesn't mean they're willing to accept all comers. Take, for example, frequently weepy, left-wing-conspiracy-touting Fox News talking head Glenn Beck. It seems the man who earlier this year referred to President Obama as a "racist" is a huge Muse fan. Beck tweeted his love a few weeks ago, when he gushed, "New Muse CD. Amazing. These guys are right on the money. Lyrics on target, talent off the charts. They 'get it.' Libertarian!"

According to Media Matters, Beck went even further in expressing his fanboy appreciation for the group on his daily radio show, "The Glenn Beck Program," on September 16, calling the CD "fantastic" and "brilliant," and said "they know the time we live in." After emphatically proclaiming that the group is made up of "libertarians from England," a co-worker asked Beck if that was true, to which the host replied, "I'm pretty sure it is, according to my 20-year-old daughter ... yeah, no, they are."

Beck said his sound guy Darryl, who used to run sound for the unabashedly lefty Muse, has compared Beck's rants to the political leanings of the band. "I said, 'You gotta be kidding me; I love those guys!' " Beck responded, going on to compare the Resistance song "United States of Eurasia" to George Orwell's famous dystopian novel "1984." In a recent interview, the band did say "1984" was a big influence on the album, though Beck credited them with being "very into one world government of here it comes guys, better wake up."

Before playing some of "Eurasia," which he called "a little fascistic"-sounding, Beck said, "all of the lyrics are just dead-on on what's coming our way," further praising the lyrics, music and production as "brilliant" and prescient about the impending one world government he is fond of warning about.

Normally, an English act that's been trying to crack the American nut for more than a decade would gratefully accept that kind of praise from a popular talking head. But Muse were apparently not amused by Beck's plugs. Later on in that same show, Beck announced, "Uh, just got an e-mail from the representation of Muse. They would like me to retract my endorsement. [Laughter ensues.] My apologies to Muse for saying that I like them. I didn't mean to destroy all their credibility and all their coolness."

Beck actually began hyping the band a month earlier, when he showcased the lyrics to the first single, "Uprising," on his show in August, but does not appear to have discussed them at length since getting the clamp-down order.

A spokesperson for Muse could not be reached for comment at press time.

If you've heard even one note of Muse's new album, The Resistance — or if you saw their roof-blowing performance at the VMAs — you know that the English trio are far from understated.

Muse are stadium-rocking superstars in Europe. They go for the big idea with a gargantuan sound that melds the theatrical flair of Queen with the symphonic filigrees of 1970s prog rock and a healthy dose of the electronic-rock quirks of the band they're most often compared to, Radiohead.

But Muse, who are contributing a remix of The Resistance song "I Belong to You" to the soundtrack of the upcoming "Twilight" sequel "New Moon," had some new ideas for their fifth album, which they said is their most personal work to date.

"I think it's quite a departure from what we've done in the past," drummer Dominic Howard said. "There's lots of different styles of music that we tried out. There's different styles of music that we feel like we've never come across before. And, well ... we've got a big symphony on there. It's a three-part symphony right at the end of the album, which is this very kind of, like, ambitious, very orchestral huge piece of music which is a pretty hard task to take on, but ended up sounding great."

Howard was speaking of "Exogenesis," which is, indeed, a three-part symphony complete with an "Overture," a second act called "Cross-Pollination" and a finale called "Redemption." With swelling, dramatic strings and classical piano runs worthy of Chopin or Rachmaninoff, operatic vocals and searching lyrics about escaping the bounds of earthly gravity, the songs are indeed beyond ambitious, which is nothing new for a group of guys who have been forthright about their desire to conquer the globe with their Cinemascope sound.

"I think the structure of the album has a mild, loose narrative ... which is something different to what we've done before," frontman Matthew Bellamy explained. "I wouldn't say it's a pure concept album, but it's definitely got a few themes which go throughout. Themes like revolution, uprising, wanting political change, constitutional reform ... as well as a sort-of, kind-of love story developing in the midst of all that."

Bellamy said the album is a kind of musical companion to "1984," the classic George Orwell novel about a lone man's rebellion against a controlling totalitarian government. But, despite those far-reaching, worldly themes, Howard said that at its heart, The Resistance, which was produced by the band, is really a personal statement. "We did a song called 'Undisclosed Desires,' which is very kind of programmed and much more electronic-sounding than anything we've ever done before," he said. "And we produced it all by ourselves as well, so I think for that it sounded very, very personal and also gave us a chance to feel very comfortable to experiment with all these ideas and ... you know, somehow we finished it."

Muse already provided one of the musical high points for the first "Twilight" film when their "Supermassive Black Hole" played during the vampire baseball scene. Now, singer Matt Bellamy has confirmed that Stephenie Meyer's favorite band will do the honors again by providing a reworked tune from their new album, The Resistance, for the soundtrack of the film's sequel, "New Moon."

Speaking to MTV UK, Bellamy said that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz had spoken to him recently about doing a remix of the quirky piano tune "I Belong to You."

"He wants a rendition of that, but the only thing with the new film is they want the songs to be exclusive to the film," Bellamy said. "So he's asking if I mind doing, or if we mind doing an alternative version of it."

While a rep for Atlantic Records, which is releasing the "New Moon" soundtrack, did not confirm Bellamy's announcement, he noted that the soundtrack's lineup is expected to be announced Monday (September 21) on Meyer's Web site.

Bellamy said the band is up to the challenge. "I think it's all right. ... If it was one of the main tracks on [our] album, I would never do it," he said. "But it's actually one of the weirder tracks on the album ... one of the 'can't believe we got away with it' kind of tracks. I think it might be worth giving it a go [because] it's a track that might not get played live very often ... so it might give that track some life that it wouldn't have otherwise."

The song starts out as a swooning piano ballad, before switching into a dramatic, 1940s-style Gallic weeper in which Bellamy croons in French. While they've released four albums and are playing stadiums in their native England, it was the placement of "Black Hole" in "Twilight" that helped Muse gain a foothold in the United States.

"It's opened it up in some kind of way, millions of people listening to 'Supermassive Black Hole' that have probably never heard our band before, which is not a bad thing," drummer Dominic Howard told MTV UK. "They have all gone bloody vampire mad over there. Seriously, it's crazy!"

Muse rocked the VMAs in New York last week, and Bellamy said the performance of their new single, "Uprising," was a nice introduction to what he hopes will be their new legion of Stateside fans. "That was pretty good — we got to do our own little concert ... that kind of doubled up as an album-launch concert."

While the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards party was raging just a few blocks to the east, Muse played for a packed house at New York City's Walter Kerr Theater. The intimate surroundings and crowd of die-hard fans offered the perfect platform for the popular British rock trio's debut performance on American television.

After bringing so much beautiful noise to an empty house during Saturday's rehearsal that dust was shaken loose from the walls, the band was in perfect form as they played "Uprising," the first single off of The Resistance, the band's fifth studio album, which hits store shelves Monday. Bathed in red and blue lights, Muse drove through their hard-driving new song while screens behind them cycled through New York City scenes and, inexplicably, teddy bears.

The highlight of the performance came when lead singer Matthew Bellamy went running out the stage door, guitar in hand, to the delight of the crowds gathered on the street outside. It would be tough to one-up Kanye West's outburst during Taylor Swift's VMA acceptance speech, but Muse's high-energy American TV debut was damn close.

Word emerged Saturday that the band will speak with "New Moon" director Chris Weitz while they're in the States about the possibility of being added to the soundtrack of his upcoming "Twilight" sequel. It would be a repeat performance for the trio, as their "Supermassive Black Hole," off the 2006 album, Black Holes & Revelations, was featured on the previous film's soundtrack.

With the new album almost here and a potential repeat association with what is arguably the biggest phenomenon in the world of entertainment right now, Muse members Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are certainly on track to reach new heights of success in 2010.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards are live now! Stay tuned for the night's big winners, red-carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes updates and more.
