They Heart Loud Music: Matchbook Romance and Bullet for My Valentine must have known there'd be so few Valentine's Day-related releases dropping Tuesday.

Matchbook were farm-bound for their second effort, tracking their Voices in a supposedly haunted barn (aren't they all?) in rural Massachusetts. While fans wise enough to preorder were rewarded with free tees, everyone will be able to sharpen their wiseassery with songs like "You Can Run, but We'll Find You," "Goody, Like Two Shoes" and "Singing Bridges (We All Fall)."

Bullet for My Valentine's brand of loud rock is more of the metal variety, and with "Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow," "All These Things I Hate" and "4 Words (To Choke Upon)," The Poison might be a tough swallow for some. Preorders were packed with a color poster and candies (for the sweethearts), although everyone will be treated to some enhanced goodies on the proper release. (Don't miss instru-metal greats Apocalyptica on the intro track.)

This Bossa Nova's Boss: Is anything possible with a Pea behind the decks? Sergio Mendes will soon find out as he attempts a Carlos Santana-style makeover with Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am. Even though Mendes is largely responsible for importing bossa nova to America, Timeless — his first set of new material in eight years — is more of an urban affair, jacked up with guest spots by Justin Timberlake, John Legend, the Peas, Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott and many more.

Ghettopoly: Even though his grandfather was one of the Drifters, Jaheim is busy trying to make his own classics — Ghetto Classics, that is. He nabbed white-hot producers Scott Storch, KayGee and Bink for his latest outing (although he does twiddle some of the knobs himself). And yup, that's Jadakiss siding with Jaheim on the first single, "Everytime I Think About Her." This title should fit comfortably alongside Jaheim's previous efforts, Ghetto Love and Still Ghetto.

Tori's Story: Still trying to catch your breath after the 12-disc Original Bootlegs box Tori Amos put out late last year? If so, you might not be prepared for another comprehensive item, "Fade to Red: Video Collection," which recaps everything from "Crucify" — the first track on her 1992 solo debut, Little Earthquakes — to "Sweet the Sting" from last year's Beekeeper. (Don't miss two bonus clips — a remixed "Professional Window" and the U.K. version of "Cornflake Girl" — that appear at the end of disc two.)

Song Title Of The Week:

"If I Drop Names of Exotic Towns That You'll Never See, in the Songs That I Write, It's That That's All I Have When I Miss My Girl & You're Taking Yours Home Tonight" on Luke Doucet's Broken (and Other Rogue States)

Other Notables:

Various artists' I Am the Resurrection: A Tribute to John Fahey and Fahey's The Yellow Princess reissue: Although many had written him off as another folk fogy, John Fahey is getting a posthumous shot in the arm from some of indie rock's finest: Sufjan Stevens, Calexico, Devendra Banhart, M. Ward, the Fruit Bats, Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo and Granddaddy. Also this week — to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Fahey's death and the 40th anniversary of his signing with Vanguard — the label is brushing up 1968's The Yellow Princess with three bonus tracks and fresh liner notes.

The Sword's Age of Winters: Not to be confused with the Swords Project, Da Swordzmen, Two Lone Swordsmen or the other metal bands that have also taken up the sharp moniker, the Austin, Texas, outfit is stepping up to the plate for the first time with a nine-track maiden release. Conrad Keely of Austin buddies ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead — who took the Sword on the road in early 2004 — embellishes the Age of Winters cover with some magical sketches, sure to make the LP version even more illustrious.

The Veronicas' The Secret Life of ... the Veronicas: If you don't have someone to smooch with this Valentine's Day, you might want to pucker up with the Veronicas — their debut cover's covered with kisses. Unlike Tegan and Sara, these 20-year-old identical twins are decidedly more pop; for their debut, they've brainstormed with writers and producers who have previously teamed with Britney, Madonna and Kelly Clarkson.

Shawn Mullins' 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor: Somewhat akin to Sonic Youth putting out an album the site of their studio, which was devastated in the 9/11 attacks (Murray Street), Shawn Mullins has titled his latest after the New Orleans studio that used to be located right near the levee on Dauphine Street. Needless to say, some of the songs — "Beautiful Wreck" (the first single, co-written with Glenn Phillips), "Solitaire" and even Mullins' cover of "The House of the Rising Sun" — have a much different resonance now than originally intended.

Shawn Mullins will be releasing a career-spanning compilation next month.
The previous sentence may inspire snickers in some and confusion in others; after all, this is a guy who gained his first national exposure a little over a year ago via his hit "Lullaby."
Mullins, however, is no newcomer, having spent a decade as an independent label artist before "Lullaby" garnered him major label interest. "Soul's Core," featuring that hit single, was originally released on Mullins' own SMG Records before it was scooped up by Columbia Records and re-released in September of last year.
Also included on the collection will be three of Mullins' post-"Soul's Core" recordings: his cover of George Harrison's "What Is Life" (from the "Big Daddy" soundtrack), his cover of David Bowie's "Changes" (from "The Faculty" soundtrack) and a new recording of Mullins' 1994 song "Lately" (see ).
Mullins will be supporting "The First Ten Years" with a brief tour, and here's where you can catch him:

10/29 - Durham, NC @ Duke University
11/2 - Minneapolis, MN @ Fine Line Music Café
11/14 - Seattle, WA @ King Cat Theatre
11/15 - Portland, OR @ Aladdin Theater
11/16 - San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore
11/17 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Zephyr Club
11/18 - Boulder, CO @ Fox Theatre & Café
11/19 - Denver, CO @ Fillmore (opening for the Indigo Girls)
11/24 - Atlanta, GA @ Tabernacle
11/27 - Asheville, NC @ The Grey Eagle

Devoted fans of the WB series "Dawson's Creek" are getting a chance to visit the burg where the show is filmed and take in a concert featuring acts familiar from the show's soundtrack.
Six hundred contest winners will be flown to the show's real-life location of Wilmington, North Carolina next month to take in performances by Paula Cole, Shawn Mullins, Wood, and Tal Bachman at a private show to take place on November 13.
The contest is being sponsored by Ford Focus, which will be running commercials during the remainder of the month providing viewers with the skinny on the various ways to enter. Those 600 fans with fate on their side will be sent to the gig, which will be hosted by members of the show's cast.
Cole is perhaps the most inextricably connected artist to the soapy teen series, as her "I Don't Want To Wait" has served time as the show's theme; she appeared on the "Songs From 'Dawson's Creek'" soundtrack along with Mullins and Wood.
Bachman ("She's So High")
is an album absentee, though his music has been played behind the traumas and trials of Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Jen, et al., during broadcasts.

-- Kim Stitzel

Several artists from Atlanta and Athens, including R.E.M., Drivin' N' Cryin's Kevn Kinney, Shawn Mullins, Trinket, and Guadalcanal Diary, have lent their help and some of their music to a new benefit CD entitled "Got Live (If You Want It)."
Net proceeds from the record will be donated to the AIDS Coalition of Northeast Georgia, and other acts contributing live cuts include 5/8, Deacon Brody, and the Josh Joplin Band, who recently signed to Shawn Mullins' SMG label (see "Shawn Mullins Inks Deal With Josh Joplin Band").
Most of the songs on the album were performed and recorded during the last two years on "Live Noise," a program featured on Athens-area radio station Rock 103.7.
"Got Live" was subsequently compiled by Chris Williams, the host of "Local Noise," who began to approach friends and colleagues about getting involved in the project after losing an aunt to AIDS last year.
"This CD was intended to be like the old-fashioned
mix tapes you would give to a friend," Williams said. "This is my way of sharing with others what I think is great about the local Athens and Atlanta music scene."
One song, R.E.M.'s "Country Feedback," was recorded at a Greenpeace concert held in Athens back in 1992. It was added to the disc after Williams asked R.E.M.'s representatives about possibly getting some artwork from the band.
"I approached R.E.M.'s management about trying to get Michael Stipe or Mike Mills to donate something to be used as cover art," Williams said, "but they offered a song instead. This live version of 'Country Feedback' has been my favorite R.E.M. song since I originally heard it six years ago, and when I proposed it for inclusion they agreed immediately."
"Got Live (If You Want It)" is currently available via CDNow and by special order at most major music retailers. The track listing for the album is:

Guadalcanal Diary - "Litany"
Kitty Snyder - "NY Years"
Dayroom - "Stranded"

Kevn Kinney - "Chico and Maria"
Shawn Mullins - "Shimmer"
Trinket - "Throwaway Culture"
Soul Miner's Daughter - "That Man They Call Diablo"
Deacon Brody - "No Vacancy"
5/8 - "Orlando"
Nathan Sheppard - "Dyin' Day"
Josh Joplin Band - "Emptyhead"
Memory Dean - "Ghost"
Guadalcanal Diary - "Ten Minutes"
Kevn Kinney - "Mystery Road"
R.E.M. - "Country Feedback"

The Guinness Fleadh festival is expanding again this year, as promoters have announced plans to bring such artists as the Cardigans, Ben Harper, Shawn Mullins, Van Morrison and other to four U.S. cities -- San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and New York -- in June.
Like the 1998 shows, which played to some 95,000 fans in concerts held in New York, San Francisco and Chicago last summer, this year's Fleadh will feature a rotating line-up throughout its month-long, weekend itinerary, which kicks-off in San Francisco on June 5.
For the third year in a row, the U.S edition of the Fleadh Festival is being sponsored by Guinness and is (vaguely) intended to celebrate the influence of traditional Irish songwriting and storytelling on contemporary music.
Additional artists are expected to be named in the coming weeks, but the dates and tentative line-ups for this year's Fleadh festival are:
6/5 - San Francisco, CA @ Golden Gate Park
Featuring Van Morrison, Elvis Costello,
Ben Harper, the Cardigans, John Lee Hooker, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, John Prine, Dave Alvin, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Eleanor McEvoy, Young Dubliners, Martin Sexton, Shana Morrison and Too Cynical to Cry.
6/12 - Chicago, IL @ TBA
Featuring Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, Steve Earle, Taj Mahal, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, John Prine, Dave Alvin, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Eleanor McEvoy, The Drovers, Martin Sexton, Kila, Too Cynical to Cry and Jack Lukeman.
6/19 - Boston, MA @ Suffolk Down
Featuring Elvis Costello, Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, John Lee Hooker, Richard Thompson, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, Black 47, Martin Sexton, Blink, Eileen Ivers Band, Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy, Eleanor McEvoy, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Mark Geary, Too Cynical to Cry, Watercress and Jack Lukeman.
6/26 - New York City, NY @ Randall's Island
Featuring

Paying homage to their respective rise from obscurity to the upper realms of the rock and alt. rock charts, Shawn Mullins and the Flys have agreed to headline a Spring Break concert being sponsored in conjunction with the "Bandemonium" unsigned band contest.
The Flys, who have appeared at several of "Bandemonium's" regional competitions, are set to perform on March 17 at Spinnaker's in Panama City Beach, Florida, and Mullins will deliver his set the following night at the same location.
Over 350 bands have submitted entries in the "Bandemonium" contest, which has been narrowed down to groups over the last two months. The two as-yet-undetermined finalists, chosen by a panel of judges from then 10 remaining, will then travel to Panama City Beach to compete for the grand prize.
As part of the finals, both unsigned groups will perform opening sets for the Flys, with the winning act returning the next night to open for Mullins.
The band selected as the "Bandemonium" grand
prize winner will also receive cash, musical gear and studio time with producer Jim Wirt, who handled Incubus' major-label debut for Epic Records.

Atlanta crooner Shawn Mullins enjoyed a breakthrough year in 1998, as his ballad, "Lullaby," was all over the radio and TV airwaves, and helped the folk singer/songwriter garner a Grammy nod for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance."
Now Mullins is hoping to spread a little of his good fortune to his fellow musicians back home, and has made his friends in another Atlanta act, the Josh Joplin Band, the first signing to Mullins' label, SMG Records.
"After having little success in attracting major label attention earlier in my career," Mullins said in a statement heralding the signing. "I decided to form SMG Records in 1994 as an avenue to continue practicing my art. I always wanted other artists on the label to help expose their music, and Josh Joplin was somebody whose songs have always moved me from the first time we played together in 1989."
The Josh Joplin Band has released a pair of albums, 1996's "Boxing Nostalgic" and 1994's "Projector Head," and hopes to issue its next,
as-yet-untitled album by the fall.

A special one-off group comprised of Alice in Chains' singer Layne Staley, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, former Jane's Addiction drummer Steven Perkins and ex-Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble has recorded a cover of Pink Floyd's classic cut, "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" -- which marks the first time the group has allowed any of its songs to be "officially" covered.
The ensemble recorded "Brick in the Wall," which originally appeared on Floyd's 1980 landmark double-album, "The Wall," under the group name of the Class of '99 for the soundtrack to Robert Rodriguez's new film, "The Faculty," starring R&B crooner Usher, Elijah Wood, Josh Harnett and Jordana Brewster.
But the loose-knit super alt. group isn't the only one getting caught up in the spirit of covering its music idols for the "Faculty," as Shawn Mullins has contributed a version of David Bowie's "Changes" to the album, while a pair of venerable Alice Cooper tunes have received the remake treatment
as well -- with Soul Asylum performing "School's Out" and Creed revamping "I'm 18" for the film.
Other artists offering up new tracks for the "Faculty" include Sheryl Crow on "Resuscitation," Garbage on "Medication," Stabbing Westward on "Haunting Me" and "The Kids Aren't All Right" from the Offspring.
"The Faculty" is due to arrive on screens on Christmas Day, while the soundtrack is due out a few days earlier, on December 22.

Atlanta singer/songwriter Shawn Mullins has firmed up tour plans that will see him open a string of dates for guitar-toting crooner Chris Isaak.

Mullins and Isaak will hit the road early next month, and will play together for the bulk of November.

For Mullins, the gig marks what is so far the peak of a long eight-year climb through indie-land that saw the performer release eight albums on his own. The bridge from the world of the independents to a major label came courtesy of "Lullaby," Mullins gruff-yet-serene tale of city life. The video for that track is currently a Buzz Clip, but before that it was getting heavy radio play in Atlanta, where it first caught the ear of major labels.

Mullins hardly sees the success of the song as a surprise, however, as he apparently knew he had stumbled across something big when he first penned the song.

Mullins recently explained to MTV News. "It just happens that way. When I write a song that's gonna move me, it typically moves my audience, the people who like my music. So I hoped, I hoped that it would get some attention because I sure liked the song when I wrote it." [28.8 RealVideo]

Mullins will get the chance to drum up even more attention when he hits the road with Isaak starting November 3 in Minneapolis. Here's where to catch them:

11/3 - Minneapolis, MN @ State Theatre
11/5 - Chicago, IL @ Chicago Theatre
11/6 - Milwaukee, IL @ Riverside Theatre
11/8 - Detroit, MI @ Detroit State Theatre
11/10 - Columbus, OH @ Ohio Theatre
11/12 - Washington, D.C. @ 9:30 Club
11/20 - New York, NY @ Roseland
