Everything old is new again with this week's batch of new releases.
</p><p>Both Red Hot Chili Peppers and Counting Crows return after three-year
absences, with <I>By the Way</I> and <I>Hard Candy,</I> respectively.
</p><p>On the harder side, Long Island melodic hardcore outfit Glassjaw release
<I>Worship and Tribute</I> as the follow-up to their 2000 release, <I>Everything
You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence.</I> Mighty Mighty Bosstones aim
for a strong comeback with <I>A Jackknife to a Swan.</I>
</p><p>The LOX's tough-talking lyrical enforcer Styles drops his long-awaited solo LP, <I>A Gangster and a Gentleman.</I> While the self-proclaimed "hardest rapper out" has been enjoying heavy radio play the past few months with "Good Times," produced by Swizz Beatz, as well as the Pharoahe Monch-featured "The Life," he still dishes out underground chunks of funk like "I'm a Ruff Ryder."

<p type="articleText">

<p>
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are veteran artists in every sense of the word.
</p><p>From the Boston underground of the late '80s, they built a following on
their perky rock-meets-ska rave-ups and were able to parlay the attention
into a major-label deal that yielded a million-seller, 1997's <I>Let's Face
It.</I> In addition to releasing three other modestly successful LPs, they
played an integral role in the third-wave ska movement that spawned the
careers of No Doubt, Sublime and Smash Mouth.
</p><p>On July 9 the eight-man collective follow up 2000's <I>Pay Attention</I>
&#151; their most commercially disappointing major-label LP &#151; with <I>A
Jackknife to a Swan,</I> their first LP for an indie (SideOneDummy) since
1992's <I>More Noise and Other Disturbances</I> (Taang!). Having been around
the proverbial block a few times, singer Dickey Barrett takes this latest lap
in stride.
</p><p>"We're an independent band at heart despite what the labels on our records
say," he said. "We're not looking to be a success by someone else's
yardstick. We measure ourselves."
</p><p>That <I>Pay Attention</I> sold less than one-tenth of what <I>Let's Face
It</I> sold doesn't taint Barrett's view of the group's discography.
</p><p>"As far as I'm concerned, it's been all ups," he explained. "That one record
(<I>Let's Face It</I>) was more successful at that time because it was that
time. ... To me it was like one album of quote-unquote success, but all of
them were worthwhile, and all of it was fun, and I enjoyed every minute of
it."
</p><p>Releasing <I>A Jackknife to a Swan</I> on an indie isn't the only return to
the good old days. Musically it's Bosstones circa early '90s: blaring horns
that forgo melody in favor of might; jarring, chunky riffs; and an energetic
bounce that makes it all uniquely danceable, without any contrived attempts
to fit into the current climate (as were made in '92 on Barrett's least
favorite Bosstones song, "Bad in Plaid," on which he raps).
</p><p>"It's a return to the roots of the Bosstones," said Barrett. "It's like the
old-school aggression. The horns are thick and fat and sound really, really
good. I think it's doing what we do best: new-school songwriting with the
old-school aggression."
</p><p>Nostalgic evidence is found on tracks such as "I Want My City Back," a
longing for Boston's Rathskeller, an early home for the band in its club
days, and "The Old School Off the Bright," in which Barrett namechecks
stereotypes of the Bosstones' diverse fanbase, from "skins with the pins,"
punks, drunks and layabouts to "steady-working Joes" and "blue-blooded
bros."
</p><p>Unlike some artists, Barrett didn't mind that some fans got an early taste
of <I>Jackknife</I> when tracks were leaked online. His credo is that he
makes music for his fans, and their opinion &#151; not a record label's
profit potential &#151; is his main concern. So far the early line on
<I>Jackknife</I> isn't at odds with the band's view of their latest opus.
</p><p>"I made the album for people to hear. The version that's out, there's some
incomplete songs on it, which is a little bit annoying, but that's fine. If
they're enjoying it and the songs are incomplete, they're really going to
like the album. I'm not Eminem. The whole world isn't waiting for my next
album. So the people who are truly interested in hearing the thing before
it's released are hardcore Bosstones fans. And they'll show up at the record
store on July 9, too. I don't care. I want people to hear the music. I
didn't start making music or choose to do what I do because I thought I was
going to get rich from it."
</p><p>Barrett and his bandmates are showcasing their artistry as one of the
co-headliners on this summer's Vans Warped Tour, which kicked off Friday.
The band shares top billing with fellow Warped vets Bad Religion.
Considering that both bands released their debuts when many concertgoers
were still in diapers, and that other long-in-the-tooth artists on the trek
include Lagwagon, MxPx, No Use For a Name and Reel Big Fish, the Bosstones'
old-school vibe should fit in well.
</p><p>"That's the way the Warped Tour works," Barrett said. "You know what you're
getting. It's a reunion for us for sure. [Most bands] are friends of ours.
That's why it's good. It's not like you're going out with bands that you
don't know. We're anti-social. You get to be my age, you don't want to take
the time to make any new friends."
</p><p>He's not a total curmudgeon, however. Barrett said he's interested in
watching some of the tour's younger guns take their best shot. That is, so
long as it doesn't interfere with the daily pinochle or cribbage game.
</p><p>"Get away from my bus, you kids, you," he said in a mocking old-man voice.
"Don't wreck my shuffleboard court. I spent all morning making that."
</p><p>Judging by the quickness with which he spat the example, and the fact that
he's well aware shuffleboard requires a court that one could craft alongside
a tour bus, there's a chance he wasn't being completely facetious.
</p><p>So a word to the wise: While sopping up the sounds of Warped Tour
up-and-comers like Something Corporate, Alkaline Trio and Ozma, be sure to
catch the Bosstones' set for proof that a band can make music for music's
sake and still have loads of fun doing it. Just don't bother Dickey before
he's had his nap &#151; he tends to get cranky.
</p>

<p>
Bad Religion and NOFX are among the bands set to warp under the summer sun, as the Vans Warped Tour has lined up an itinerary for its annual trek.
</p><p>The summer tour staple will hit 46 cities, beginning June 21 in Nampa, Idaho, according to tour organizers. Following a string of Midwest dates, the punk-rock caravan travels south to Texas and Arizona before visiting California in early July. From there, it takes a northern route across the country and dips into the Southeast. The remainder of the scheduled 48 shows &#151; consecutive bills are slated for Los Angeles and San Francisco &#151; wind down in the Northeast and wrap up in Detroit, Michigan, on August 18.
</p><p>In addition to Bad Religion and NOFX, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, New Found Glory, Lagwagon, Reel Big Fish, Alkaline Trio and Something Corporate are also on board to perform on one of Warped's stages (see <a href="/news/articles/1452030/20020130/bad_religion.jhtml">"Warped Tour '02 To Feature Bad Religion, NOFX, New Found Glory, More"</a>). Recent additions to the roster include Boy Sets Fire, Gob, Guttermouth, Riddlin Kids, the Damned, the Start, Tiger Army and Ultimate Fakebook.
</p><p>Among new features for fans on this year's outing, is the Pirate Zone, a mini-water park of sorts which lets contestants take aim at artists perched in a dunk tank. Warped Are They Now? displays memorabilia from eight years of the tour, and those who think they beat their skins the fastest can put their percussion to the test in the Extreme Drumming tent, which is looking for the fastest drummer in the world.
</p><p>Last year's tour featured Blink-182, Rancid, D12, Jimmy Eat World and Thursday, among others (see <a href="/news/articles/1444753/20010625/rancid.jhtml">"Warped Tour Opener: Rancid, Pennywise, Shabby Sound, Trashed Goodie Bags"</a>).

While winter maintains its chilly grip on most of the country, dreaming of this summer's Warped Tour should warm the cockles of any skate punk's heart. And with Warped veterans such as Bad Religion, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and NOFX returning to the eight-year-old festival, this year's trek is shaping up to be quite a homecoming.
</p><p>Those bands, along with New Found Glory, Lagwagon, MxPx, Good Charlotte, Flogging Molly, No Use for a Name, Reel Big Fish, Ozma, Hot Water Music and the two bands favored to be this year's breakout acts, Alkaline Trio and Something Corporate, will participate in the summer outing, according to a tour spokesperson. Additional artists are expected to be added to the bill.
</p><p>Warped '02 is scheduled to begin June 21, most likely in Boise, Idaho, the spokesperson said. The tour's expected 47 shows will wrap up August 18 in the parking lot of the Pontiac Silverdome at Comerica Park in Detroit.
</p><p>Multiple stages have become a Warped staple &#151; most years see five &#151; and one of this year's will be something of a private affair. Indie label Drive-Thru Records, home to New Found Glory and Something Corporate, will implement their own stage &#151; the first time a Warped stage has ever been devoted to a single label &#151; to showcase their pop punk roster. While NFG and Something Corporate will stick to the "official" Warped stage, such bands as Home Grown, Allister, the Movielife, Finch, the Starting Line and Rx Bandits will grace the Drive-Thru stage.

Everyone knows extreme sports and rock go together like Oreos and milk. That's why this year's Gravity Games, which run September 7-9 in Providence, Rhode Island, will feature performances by Smash Mouth, Lit and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
</p><p>The bands will each play a 90-minute set at the Downtown Waterplace Park,
and festival organizers expect between 45,000 and 50,000 people to attend
each night, according to a publicist for the event. Sevendust and Oleander played at
last year's Gravity Games and drew similar crowds.
</p><p>The Bosstones will play on September 7, with the pop punk band Riddlin' Kids opening. The second day will be headlined by Smash Mouth, with melodic punk act Unwritten Law warming up the crowd. Lit will perform on the final day, and eclectic sonic combo Sound of Urchin will open that show.
</p><p>Admission to all concerts and sporting events is free. Gravity Games 2001,
which showcases aggressive inline skating, downhill skateboarding, freestyle
motocross, stunt skateboarding and street luge, is expected to draw upwards
of 400,000 people over the three-day event.

<p>
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are gearing up to throw it down on the road.
</p><p>Building off their annual Hometown Throwdown shows in Boston, the ska sensations are launching the Your Town Throwdown Tour on March 15 in Milwaukee.
</p><p>The 10-city, 21-show outing will find the Bosstones playing intimate venues with varying regional bands, including Voodoo Glow Skulls, Fenix TX, Mustard Plug and the Blue Meanies. Some bands and dates are still being finalized.
</p><p>The Bosstones' Hometown Throwdown &#151; a series of five sold-out shows held in Boston during Christmas week &#151; has gone on for seven years, and inspired the album <i>Live From the Middle East.</i>
"The Throwdown has become such a great event in Boston that we wanted to take that excitement on the road," Bosstones singer Dicky Barrett said in a press release. "We love being able to connect with our fans, and there's no better way than to throw down with them."
Last month, the band announced Your Town Throwdown shows on March 16 and 18 at the Cubby Bear in Chicago, but later rescheduled for March 17 and 18 at the larger Metro.
</p><p>Barrett's husky voice and his seven-piece band's pop compositions are an unusual match, though the Bosstones have been developing a hardcore following since their inception in the early '90s. The Boston band appeared in 1995's "Clueless" and scored a huge hit with "The Impression That I Get," from 1997's <i>Let's Face It.</i>
The Bosstones played on the Vans Warped Tour last summer in support of their seventh album, <i>Pay Attention.</i> The band plans to begin recording its next album this summer, according to an Island Records spokesperson.

<P> Over 130 fans were arrested and more than 30 others were treated for injuries at the WBCN River Rave concert, an all-day festival featuring Godsmack, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Filter, Everclear, Static-X, Cypress Hill, and Stone Temple Pilots, held in Foxboro, Massachusetts on Saturday.</P> <P>According "The Boston Herald," 56 people were arrested outside Foxboro Stadium, mostly on minor drug possession and alcohol-related offenses, while an additional 75 concertgoers were taken into custody inside the venue.</P> <P>The majority of those 70-plus fans were arrested for trespassing when a group of several hundred ticket holders in the stands rushed the field-level barricades during the set from Boston-area faves Godsmack (see <a href="/news/articles/1428146/20000414/godsmack.jhtml"><B>"Sheila Divine, Godsmack, Sweep Boston Music Awards"</b></a>).</P> <P>Local police officials noted that the River Rave arrests were the most made at the Foxboro Stadium since 90 were arrested during a
show by legendary jamsters the Grateful Dead in the late '80s.</P> <P>None of the injuries reported at the River Rave were considered life-threatening by authorities, with the most serious -- including several broken noses -- coming as a result of the mosh pit located near the front of the stage.</P> <P>Organizers estimate that a crowd of 50,000 attended the sold-out weekend River Rave, and despite the various incidents, radio station WBCN is hoping to hold next year's concert at the same facility.</P> <P>On Monday, the radio station issued an official statement apologizing for having hired an independent video production company that encouraged females to bare their breasts to cameramen who projected the resulting images on video screens next to the stage.</P>
